Egg Nog/Hot Cocoa

Winry frowned as she looked at the cup that Ed handed her. Its contents were definitely not what she had been telling him that she was craving. It was, in fact, something completely different. And while Winry sometimes thought her husband made stupid decisions, he was not a stupid man, usually.

Which made her question just why exactly he had brought her this. And she wasn't known to question quietly or gently.

"Ed. What's this?" she demanded. "This isn't egg nog."

"I know," he replied, sitting down next to her with his own glass of hot cocoa. "It's hot cocoa."

Winry frowned further. "What, were they out of egg nog? Because that's the only possible excuse you could give me for this." There was a threat in her voice.

Ed shook his head, well-practiced in ignoring her mild threats. "No, they weren't, and no, it isn't." He pointed to her stomach, heavily swollen with pregnancy by this point. "That's the other reason."

Winry looked down at herself. She was on her third pregnancy by this point, and this one was deciding to be the most stubborn of all. In her other two pregnancies she had been sick at first, but then it had cleared up and she had been able to eat almost anything. Marshall hadn't cared for fish, and Sadie hadn't wanted sweets, but this one? This one was the worst of the lot.

She wondered if that meant he was going to be a difficult child. That would be right in line with his father, after all.

It was like he didn't want her to eat anything with milk in it. She had told Ed more than once that it was definitely his child just because of that. Anytime she tried to eat a milk product she got sick or felt nauseous. Milk, cheese, even cream. None of it settled well.

However, it didn't stop her from craving it.

One thing that she had been craving for months was egg nog. She normally wasn't in love with the drink, although it was alright, but she had been craving it from just about the very beginning of this pregnancy. The problem was, it was seasonal, and this was the only time that she could get any of it. And the best of it? Oh, the best of it was found right here, in the annual Resembool Holiday Party.

And now she couldn't have any.

"Ed," she said, looking her husband straight in the eyes. "Do you understand how much I'm craving this?"

"I do," he said, returning her look. "But I also understand how sick milk makes you right now." His eyes softened a little bit. "I'm sorry, Win, but I just don't want you to risk it. You know how miserable you feel afterwards." He nodded at the cup. "I got them to make the cocoa with water instead of milk, so it should be safe to drink."

Winry sighed, and looked down at her cup, and then down at her belly. She put a hand on it. "Do you know how much I give up because of you?" she said to it. She paused for a moment, a soft smile growing on her face. "But in the end, it's all worth it."

Marshall had been well worth giving up fish, the energetic, creative little boy that he was. He was forever running one way and then another, ideas bursting out at him. She and Ed had both taught him early on how to write down his ideas so that they wouldn't be lost. Sadie was also well worth giving up sweets for. She was quiet and kind, and smart as a whip. She picked up on things fast and was forever thinking. She had learned to read early and hadn't stopped since. There was never any telling what was going to come out of her mouth.

Winry had to wonder what this one would be like. Would he be loud and brash? Shy and quiet? Curious or insular? Would he want to work more with his hands, or more with his mind? Or would he be something completely different?

Winry didn't know. All she knew was that, while her cravings were strong, the more important thing was the baby growing within her.

Winry sighed heavily, and then leaned her head over on Edward. "Alright," she said. "You win. But next year? You better get me a whole gallon of that egg nog."

Ed chuckled and kissed her on top of the head. "For the best mom in the whole world? Anything."
