The Boy of The Mountain

Prologue

"He did it!" a child wailed.

"He's a freak!" screamed a man.

"Do whatever you want but stay away from Sophie." His father said in a tone so much worse than he'd ever heard come from the man. A man who he had always listened to when he comforted him during times when the reality of his situation was harder to bear. His face so full of anger and frustration, frustration pointed at him. It had been an accident, he'd never wanted to hurt her, he only wanted to make her happy.

"SOPHIE!"

What was he going to do?

Jackson Overland had left his home behind right then, after realizing he could hurt everyone who was there, after hearing his dad's clear disgust and desire for him to be gone. Just one wave of his hand had thrown frost onto the side of a village home, and the touch of his hand had frozen a well completely over. He had come to realize that the sky had dropped snow and felt his power at work when he was fishing his sister out of the pond's icy water. He didn't know what he could do now other than just keep going up as he ascended the mountainside. He took a moment to look behind him down at the distant lights of his home village, a view he could not have imagine ever seeing while shut in his house for all his Fourteen years of life. He didn't see anyone from this distance, but he knew the lights meant people were still wide awake and likely worried he'd come back. His eyes stung as he fought back the tears, how could he be crying, why didn't the tears freeze?

What was he going to do?

He'd just ran and ran, hearing his father scream his name but not turning around. He couldn't do it now; he'd ruined everything with what he'd done and there was no going back. His new look, wild white hair like snow, skin that had already been pale from spending all his life indoors had become even paler and, even though he could not see them himself, his eye color had changed from the golden-brown eyes that he shared with his mom had become a color blue that resembled ice. This new persona was his promise to never get near people, that his powers made it impossible for him to be with those he loves so very much and that he was no longer the freak that his parents had to hide, and a name that he'd hoped would separate him from the life he was leaving behind.

Jack Frost was a boy of the wilds.

"Sophie, can you hear me sweetie?"

Emily had been moving as fast as she could to get her little girl warm again, getting a fire stoked higher in the fireplace and placing Sophie in front of it while she removed her soaked through clothing, her daughter just couldn't stop shaking! However, at the sound of her mother's voice the child gave a jerky nod of confirmation. Emily let out a small breath of relief and proceeded to grab the nearby blanket off the chair she had discarded it on when she got to work drying Sophie and wrapped it around her before sitting down with her in her lap, letting the heat from the fire seep into her cold child's freezing limbs. Where was Nicholas?

Her husband had been trying to get Jack to come in but in her focus on Sophie's condition she'd failed to hear what exactly was said. There had been shouting from both Jack and Nicholas, something she rarely heard out of her husband who was always able to exude such a steady demeanor, but she could understand, this time Jack had just gone too far.

"Mama?"

Sophie's trembling had eased a bit and she was now looking up at her mother from the folds in the blanket. "Are you mad at me?"

"No," She soothed, "of course I'm not. Why would you think that?"

The little girl looked down at the floor for a moment, "Are you mad at Jack?"

Her daughter's question hung in the air for a few seconds before Emily could think of how to respond. In a steady voice that leaked none of the panic she had earlier that night she answered. "Yes I am. You got this way because he didn't do what he was told, and as your older brother he should have known better then to take you out there."

Sophie squirmed, "Don't be mad at him mama, please don't be mad at him!" she settled down a little after Emily readjusted her hold on her with a look of concern. "Be mad at me, Its my fault!"

Emily looked at her child in mild surprise, Emily herself had been the younger daughter in herself and never had she found reason to turn her parents angry gaze on her when she felt a punishment was on the way, but Sophie, little Sophie of six years old was jumping to her brother's defense.

"…. Why don't you tell me what happened? I promise I won't yell, and I won't be mad."

After Hearing her mother's promise and her gentle hand rubbing up and down her arm, Sophie felt safe with telling the truth. No little white lies, no fibs, just the truth.

"The lights were out, and I couldn't sleep. I wanted to see them, so I woke up Jack." She had been worried that if she went to her mom and dad that they would say no, and she'd have to go back to bed and still not get to see them. "He didn't want to get up, but I wanted to see the lights sooo badly, so I kept asking." She thought back to that moment beside her brother's bed, his head against his pillow with one eye open in a slight smile before turning to look out the window himself and deciding to agree. "He helped me put on my dress and boots before we went outside. They were so pretty and bright and I wanted to see them better, so we went further into the woods where the pond is." Sophie stopped for a moment to make sure her mom was keeping her promise and not angry, Emily's face was still tranquil. Sophie recalled the moment she was afraid to talk about now.

" I saw the pond was covered with ice like when we'd go ice skating and it cracked when I stepped on it. Jack said no." she remembered, "but it was so pretty." She then looked back at her mom, "And then Jack showed me a magic trick…."

Emily kept listening as her daughter recalled the adventure she'd had with her older brother, the fun she had been having, how her big brother made it snow around them, how he would refreeze the pond at her feet…. Jack had been wrong for disobeying them, but now Emily could see that he was no more at fault then Sophie. He'd always wanted to paly like the other children outside his window and even at that very moment when he had his best chance and could have thrown all caution to the wind, he had restrained himself. More so than his sister could at any time she could play. The anger she had towards him for is disregard bleed away and she knew that she was going to have to sit down with her son, lord new he was distraught over what he'd done, and then have a talk with Nicholas about what they would need to do now that the whole village knew their secret.

The whole village knew their secret.

The realization sank into the pit of her stomach, what were they going to do? The events of that night had brought about their worse fears. Where was Nicholas and Jack? What was taking them so long to get back? Surely whatever they had been talking about could've been had inside the house where only their family was privy of everything happening with their family. No sooner had Emily started thinking about this the door opened and her husband stepped into the house.

But not Jack.

Nicholas stood just inside the door for several seconds before he shut it quietly behind him. Emily couldn't see from the shadows cast by the firelight, but she could tell by the way the man was moving that he had done something she had never thought would happen to him. It was as if a massive weight had come down on him and he had fought with everything he had to keep it from crushing him only to fail and watch as it took his world with it.

"Nicholas?" she kept her voice calm but inside she was starting to unravel.

He looked over from where he still stood by the door, having yet to remove his coat and boots, head low, shoulders hanging, and his eyes suddenly dull. He opened and closed his mouth before he finally came closer. Looking down at little Sophie.

"How is she?" his voice cracked.

"She's getting better but she's not going back out any time soon." Where was Jack?

Now that he was in the light proper, his wife could see his features clearly, he looked like he hadn't slept in months, his eyes red from strain. Where was Jack?

He placed a hand on his daughter's head and just as he'd done so his face contorted in pain. He took a deep breath and exhaled, seeming to hope it would ease what he felt by letting it escape on his breathe. Where was Jack? He then looked back at Emily and she new what she saw then. Life crushing regret.

Where was Jack, where was Jack, Where. Was. Jack?

"Em," the last vestiges of whatever strength had kept him together finally left him and he bent over placing his head on her shoulder so that only she could hear his raspy whisper. "Forgive me, please forgive me…."

Emily paled, what had happened? Where was her boy, there son?

"He's gone, Em he's gone."
