Stageshipping (Anzu Mazaki/Tea Gardner x Dark Magician Girl)
. . .
It smelled delicious in here.
The Dark Magician Girl hovered in her ethereal form, not quite visible on this plane of existence since she hadn't been summoned. She could still smell whatever it was Anzu was baking, and it was heavenly.
She floated down the hallway of Anzu's house, making her way down to the kitchen. It was a familiar path for her; she loved to visit Anzu's warm, welcoming house whenever she had a chance. Anzu was there in the warm, bright room full of thick scents, bustling back and forth with an apron and her short hair pulled half up in a bun. Dark Magician Girl smiled. She was baking again. Dark Magician Girl loved watching Anzu bake. Sometimes she liked to help secretly too; more than once she had prevented the girl from adding too much salt when she was distracted. It let Dark Magician Girl feel like she was helping, like they were friends who were making things together.
If only one day they could bake together for real.
Anzu held her phone against her ear with her shoulder as she juggled several different bags of flour and sugar at once over to the counter.
"No, dad, please, just…take the bus. It's fine. If you keep driving that thing it will only get worse…I'll pay your bus fare, dad, it's just going to cost a whole lot more to fix the car if you let it go like that…it's fine, I worked extra this week so I have more than enough to help you fix it; that's only if you don't run it into the point no return first!"
The Dark Magician Girl settled herself on the counter, kicking her legs slowly back and forth as she watched the girl bustle back and forth across the kitchen, adding a dash of this, dash of that to the bowl. The magician glanced down at her recipe and smiled. Oooh, muffins. Sounded delicious!
Her eyes wandered back to Anzu. The way her hair was slipping out of her bun, auburn strands dangling at the sides of her face, her deep blue eyes crinkled with the hint of a smile at whatever her father was saying on the other line, her slender fingers pushing the excess sugar off the top of the measuring cup, the cute dusting of flour across her nose. The Dark Magician Girl giggled—Anzu was super cute. She could totally see why Yugi was so into her.
Anzu blinked a bit at the sound, frowning. Dark Magician Girl's eyes widened. Had Anzu heard her? Could she hear her?
But then Anzu shook her head and shifted the phone better. She started measuring out baking powder—in the wrong size measuring cup, Dark Magician Girl noticed—while she talked.
"Yeah, I know, dad…it's fine, really. Just…right. Remember you're supposed to keep your schedule clear for Saturday, I have a recital and you promised you'd be there."
She laughed softly as she turned around for a moment (the Dark Magician Girl stealthily poured the baking powder into the right measuring cup and replaced the excess into the bag).
"I know, I know, you've never missed one before. But you've been super busy lately, I wouldn't be surprised if it slipped your mind…right. Okay, love you. See you when you get home. I'll have dinner ready…oh, I might have one muffin saved for you, but no promises, Jou and Honda are good at sniffing out food…"
She clicked the phone off and set it down. Then she reached for the newly replaced baking powder and popped it into the mix, beginning to mix it up with the milk mixture. Dark Magician Girl sat on the counter beside her, humming softly to herself as she watched Anzu work. She was sweet. The boys would be coming over soon and she was working so hard for her friends' sakes.
"You're too sweet," Dark Magician Girl said. "I hope you get all of the nice things."
Anzu blinked. She looked up from her work.
"Hello?" she said.
She frowned and wiped her hands on her apron, walking towards the living room muttering "did I leave the TV on…?"
Dark Magician Girl shivered delightedly. She had heard her!
She popped off of the counter and scooped up the bowl of muffin mix, taking it upon herself to finish the stirring and plop scoops into the muffin tin. Then she opened the oven, checked the first batch, and pulled them out, replacing them with the second. She placed the first batch of muffins onto the stove with a flourish. She giggled softly. This was fun. She wished she could actually bake with Anzu one day.
"Huh, must have been nothing…what? Who moved the…?"
Dark Magician Girl popped back to her feet and spun around to face Anzu with a grin.
She almost fell over when she realized Anzu was looking right at her.
"Dark Magician Girl?" Anzu said, eyes widening. "But…when did… how…?"
"You can see me!" Dark Magician Girl gushed.
She leaped forward and hugged Anzu tightly.
"Oh my gosh, you can see me, you can see me!"
"W-what? How long have you been here?"
"Just a few minutes! But this is so exciting! You can see me! You've never ever seen me before!"
"You mean, you've been here before?"
Dark Magician Girl stepped back from the hug, bouncing excitedly on her heels.
"Uh-huh. I come and help you bake sometimes…you almost put too much salt into that batch for the bake sale, so I switched it out while you weren't looking."
Anzu's initial shocked face turned into a blush.
"Oh, gosh, did I do that? I've always been so distractable when I'm baking…thanks."
"I just wanted to bake with you. You're so sweet and I wished I could talk to you all the time."
Dark Magician Girl ducked her head. Anzu frowned.
"What's wrong?"
"I…I suddenly feel like maybe I'm bothering you," Dark Magician Girl said, blushing. "I mean…I kinda broke into your house in these world's terms…and I've kind of been stalking you and maybe you think it's creepy…"
Anzu actually laughed.
"Oh, Dark Magician Girl, it wasn't your fault that I couldn't see you at first!" she said. "I'm…glad. It's nice to know that there was something there looking out for me."
She reached out and put her hands on Dark Magician Girl's shoulders.
"It must have been hard enough for you when I couldn't see you. Don't beat yourself up over something like this. I'm really glad to see you."
Dark Magician Girl peeked out from under her bangs.
"Really?"
Anzu smiled, a dazzling expression that sent a blush creeping over Dark Magician Girl's face.
"Really."
She squeezed her shoulders.
"Well, I'm going to need to make at least one more batch…you know how much Jonouchi and Honda eat! Would you like to help me?"
Dark Magician Girl felt her entire body light up.
"Yes!"
