I walked into the Salvatore house with Elena. She walked upstairs to speak with Stefan while I stayed downstairs looking for Damon and Rose. When I found them they were drinking blood from glasses and talking.
"Yeah, it does feel like it's working." Rose told him.
"Let's have a look, come on. Let me see." Damon told her moving her shirt off her shoulder. It looked horrible on her pale skin. I saw Elena and Stefan leave out of the corner of my eye but didn't look toward them.
"How is it?" she asked him.
"Definitely better. Right, Nicole?" Damon asked turning to me. I looked from Rose's shoulder to Damon then to Rose, who had turned to me.
"It's not bad." I lied to her.
"Where's Stefan and Elena?" Damon asked me.
"They left. I need you to talk to him. He's convinced that he has to find Isobel but I think that's gonna upset Elijah." I told him walking further into the living room to them.
"No, can do. I'm with Stefan on this one but if you could play nurse for a little while…" he said but Rose broke him off.
"It's not necessary." she told him.
"It is necessary. Nicole is making up for helping Katherine when she first got into town." Damon said leaving the room. Rose and I stared at each other for a moment before I followed Damon out of the room.
"Damon. Is she gonna die?" I asked him.
"Probably. The wolf bite caused some kind of infection and it's getting worse." he told me.
"Like poison?" I asked him.
"I don't know, Nicole. I'm not an expert in the field." he told me, getting annoyed.
"I'm sorry." I told him, knowing how had he'd take her death.
"Death happens. We come, we go. Sooner she dies the better. It's gloomy as hell in here." he told me leaving.
Rose and I were in Damon's bedroom putting the vampire to bed.
"I hate this. I'm a vampire, I haven't had a cold in five centuries." Rose told me.
"Just get in bed." I told her.
"Where's your sister?" she asked me.
"Probably being watched by the Salvatore brothers or another friend of ours." I told her. "Stupid question, but are you okay?" I asked her.
"Vampires don't get sick. When we die, it's fast and sudden and it's certainly not drawn out in illness." she told me.
"Damon's out there right now trying to save you. You just gotta be strong and hold on." I told her.
"Such a human thing to say." Rose told me smiling. I covered her up and then looked around the room. "You've never been in Damon's room before, have you?" she asked me as a I took a book and looked at it reading the cover, Gone with the wind. "Not what you expected?"
"It's just a room with a bed. Maybe I expected there to be silk sheets." I told her smiling and laughing lightly. She gave me the glass and I put it on her
"You're lucky, you know. No one's ever love me the way you're loved." she told me.
"I doubt that." I told her. "What about Trevor?"
"Trevor was my best friend. Nothing more. I spent all those years on the run from Elijah. I just never thought it was a good idea to set up roots. The whole idea of family is not exactly compatible with being a vampire. Why are you so eager to give up?" she asked me.
"I'm not giving up on anything, I'm just trying to protect my family. Here." I told her giving her a glass of blood.
"Is that what you're calling this whole deal with Elijah that you and your sister have?" she asked me.
"I call it our best option." I told her.
"It's your easiest option." she said and I sighed.
"That's not fair." I told her.
"Do you really think that your witch friend destroyed the moonstone?" she told me.
"Elena spoke with Bonnie since she isn't really trusting me. I know that she had the help of another witch; unless you mean it's Elijah's witch so no, I don't." I confessed to her.
"You two really are determined to die, aren't you? At least I ran, you're not even trying." she told me closing her eyes.
"I came back home so I could die for my sister to live. Does that change your opinion?" I asked her.
"I'm so tired." she told me ignoring my question. I turned to leave but Rose started talking to me. "No, stop, wait. Tell them to prepare the horses." she said.
"It's okay Rose. Just get some sleep. You'll feel better when you wake up." I told her.
"Trevor, don't be so stupid. You're never going to make it there before the sun." she said. Suddenly she shot up and screamed out in pain. "Nicole, Nicole, I need more blood." she told me.
"Yeah, of course, here." I said giving her the glass. She drank the blood but threw everything up on the sheets. "It's okay, everything's gonna be alright." I ran to the bathroom to get a washcloth. When I went back to her she was missing. When I turned around, Rose attacked me and pushed me hard against the wall.
"It's all your fault, Katerina. You Katerina, you did this." she told me.
"It's Nicole. Rose, Rose! I'm Nicole!" I said trying to convince her who I was.
"You betrayed us!" Rose shouted at me.
"I'm not Katherine!" I shouted back at her. Rose released me and backed up a bit.
"Nicole?" she asked me.
"It's me, it's Nicole." I told her sighing with relief.
"Oh my god Nicole. I'm so sorry. I don't know what's happening to me. I'm sorry." she told me.
"You're gonna be alright." I lied to her.
"My mind, I'm…" she started saying.
"It was just for a second." I told her.
"I'm sorry, don't be scared of me." she begged me.
"I'm not. I'm not, but you need to rest." I told her. She walked over to the bed and I covered her up when she lied down.
"I'm scared." she told me.
"You're not alone. I'm right here." I told her.
"Here, where's here?" she asked me.
"Damon's bedroom, you're in Damon's bedroom." I told her.
"I want to go home." she told me.
"Tell me about it." I told her trying to calm down.
"St. Austell , 30 kilometers south of London. With fields and trees and horses." she told me.
"Sounds beautiful." I told her.
"When you live long enough, everything disappears. So much time wasted, I just wish I wouldn't have been so afraid." she said told me.
I searched through the house for sheets to change Damon's bed. When I found them I walked back to Damon's room.
"I brought some clean sheets and I called Elena, she's on her way." I said when I walked in. When I looked to the bed and saw Rose missing. I left the room to search for her and couldn't find her anywhere in the house. When I walked into the library I pulled out my phone to call Damon. "It's Nicole, I'm worried about Rose. I think you should come home."I said then hung up. I heard a noise and started walking towards it. "Rose?" I'd walked into the basement and found an empty blood bag and picked it up. I flipped it over in my hand and went further into the basement. I found Rose drinking blood from a bag with multiple bags around her. "Oh my god." She turned towards me and she turned towards me.
"Katerina" she said.
"No." I told her. Rose came after me and I ran away. "Rose, stop, stop, it's Nicole. I'm not Katherine." Rose stopped and looked at me. "You're hallucinating. I'm not Katherine. I'm not Katherine." I said backing up a bit. Rose rushed at me and pushed me onto the floor. I tried keeping her head away from me. I saw the curtains out of the corner of my eye and pulled it down. Rose was hurt by the sun and I ran away from her. I tried running out of the house but Rose stopped and and continued trying to bite me. I sunk my fingers into her shoulder injury to try and get her off. Rose screamed and I ran away from her again. I went into the closest room, which was Stefan's, and locked the door and put furniture in front of it. I opened the window so the sun could enter the room and broke a wooden chair to make a stake. I jumped as Rose tried to open the door.
"Nicole? I know that's you and not Katherine. Nicole, please, I need your help." Rose begged me.
I sat in Stefan's room until it became dark and I hadn't heard anything so I finally left the room and went downstairs. I saw that the main door was opened and I gripped the stake closer to me and continued searching the house. When I turned I found Damon behind me.
"Are you okay? Where's Rose?" he asked me.
"I don't know." I told him and he looked towards the door.
At the high school Damon was talking to Sheriff Forbes about a dead body that we thought was one of Rose's meal options. I called Elena and Stefan and got their voicemails.
"Hey, it's me. I don't know where you guys are but please call me. It's important." I said then I hung up and turned to see Damon walking towards me. "Hey. Do you know what they're up to?" I asked him thinking that Elena might be with Stefan.
"My baby brother and your twin sister are not exactly my priority right now. Take this." he said giving me a stake. "Come on, let's go." he told me and we left. We heard a girl screaming and rushed as fast as we could towards it.
"Rose, stop!" Damon told her. Rose rushed toward Damon but he caught her and pinned her to the floor. "Rose, Rose! It's me, it's Damon. It's Damon." Damon told her convincing her. Her face went back to normal and she looked at the girl she had killed.
"Did I do this? I never meant to hurt anyone. I never wanted to hurt anyone." Rose told him.
"I know." Damon told her and she looked at me.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." she told me.
"Come on, let's get you home." Damon told her.
"No, I don't have a home, I haven't had a home in so long." she told us crying. "Oh make it stop, please make it stop! I hate it, make it stop!" Damon carried her in his arms and we left the parking lot.
I walked into Damon's room to see Rose laying down looking real bad.
"I'm sorry, Elena. I don't like taking human life, I never have." she told me.
"You shouldn't be here." Damon said turning to me but I walked further into the room.
"It's the worst part about it: the hunt, the need to kill, the thirst, the pleasure it brings you afterwards. I wasn't meant to be evil. It hurts." Rose told me.
"Stop talking about it." Damon ordered her.
"Damon's a lot like me. He wants to care but when he does he runs away from it. I'm sorry for what I've done today." Rose told me smiling slightly. I smiled at her and sat on the bed next to her.
"I know." I told her.
"And you need to fight. I know that you're scared but you have to do it anyway." Rose told me before coughing. I laid down next to her and put my arm under her neck. "Why are you so nice to me?" she asked me and I smiled.
"Maternal instinct maybe. You know us humans." I told her smiling.
"You can never forget it, what it's like to be human. It haunts me. It's the only thing that's kept me going. It doesn't hurt as much anymore." she told me before she suddenly started screaming in pain.
"What do we do?" I asked Damon as he pulled me away from Rose.
"Go." he told me.
"Damon…"
"Just go, I got this." he told me and I walked out of his room. I sat in his house waiting for what I knew was going to happen. After a while I heard the door open and close and I walked back up to Damon's room and saw him and Rose gone. I sighed and sat in the library waiting for Damon to return.
When Damon got home I walked up to him and he gave me a look.
"You were supposed to leave." he told me.
"I know but I wanted to make sure that you're okay." I told him giving him a glass of scotch.
"I appreciate the gesture. I'm just glad it's over." he told me taking a drink.
"You know I don't believe that." I told him.
"Go home, Nicole. Get some rest. It's a whole new day tomorrow." he told me.
"Damon, I'm your friend." I told him.
"I'm well aware of that." Damon said.
"And a friend usually knows when their friend is hurting." I told him.
"What do you want to hear? That I cared about Rose? That I'm upset? Well I didn't and I'm not." Damon lied to me.
"There you go, pretending to turn it off, pretending not to feel. Damon, you're so close, don't give up." I told him.
"I feel Nicole, okay? And it sucks! What sucks even more is that it was supposed to be me. Jules was coming after me." Damon told me finally.
"You feel guilty." I said pointing out what I heard.
"That would be human of me, wouldn't it Nikky? And I'm not human. You want to talk about giving up? That's all you've done is given up! Go home. It's been enough doom, gloom and personal growth for one night." he told me and I nodded at him.
"Okay, I will." I told him. I pulled him into a hug before letting him go. "Good night Damon." I said leaving his house and going home.
When I got home I saw Elena and Stefan walking towards me.
"Stefan, Elena, you're home." I said smiling.
"Rose?" Elena asked me and I shook my head.
"I… We called Isobel." Stefan told me and Elena looked up at me.
"I figured you would." I told him. "Didn't think Elena would be on board with it though."
"I'm sorry, I had to." she told me.
"It's fine. Did you find her?" I asked them.
"Not exactly. Hello Nicole." I looked to see Uncle/Daddy John coming from the kitchen.
"John." I said looking at him shocked.
