When I woke up Nik was laying next to me drawing circles on my stomach with a light smile on his face.
"Morning love." he said when he saw I was awake.
"Morning." I said smiling up at him.
"What were you thinking about? When I woke up?" I asked him thinking back to the calming circles he had been drawing.
"How important family is to me right now." he told me with a far off look on his face.
"Yet Elijah sleeps in a coffin right now with the rest of your family." I said looking away from him.
"I'm protecting them." he told me.
"From what?" I asked him and he got up from the bed to change his clothes. "Nik?"
"Nothing you have to worry about love. I'll always protect you." he told me as he walked to the bed ad kissed me gently. I returned the kiss before getting up and changing my clothes. When we finished we collected Stefan and left our motel to go to where the pack met for the full moon.
Klaus, Stefan, and I were walking up the mountain in a way. Stefan was holding Ray, uncouscious, on his shoulders and Nik was holding me in his arms. I'd grown tired early on our hike so Nik decided I wouldn't walk anymore. Being pregnant is hard when you want to do the things you're used to doing.
"You ok? Is Ray getting heavy?" Nik asked Stefan in a joking manor.
"I'm fine." Stefan told him.
"You sure about that? You know, we've been walking for quite some time now. If you need some water or a little sit-down..." Nik said with a teasing smile on his face.
"You know, I get that we're, uh... we're stuck together, but if we could maybe just skip the chitchat, it'd be great." Stefan told him, dropping Ray.
"So much brooding. Your self-loathing is suffocating you, my friend." Nik told him. Stefan ignored him and picked Ray up again and we continued on our way.
"Maybe it's 'cause we're all a little tired of hunting werewolves. We've been at it all summer." I reminded them.
"Thanks to our pal Ray, we found ourselves a pack. There." Nik said and I looked past some trees to see we'd found the pack. Nik put me down as Stefan entered the camp.
"Ray! Oh, my God. What's going on? Who are you?" We heard a woman say as Nik and I rejoined him.
"The important question is who am I. Please forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus." he introduced himself.
"You're the hybrid." The woman next to Ray said, backing away slightly and Nik smiled.
"You've heard of me. Fantastic." Nik said and I sat on a rock waiting for them. The boys joined me while everyone watched us. "It's fascinating, actually... A werewolf who isn't beholden to the moon, a vampire who doesn't burn in the sun. A true hybrid." Ray woke up, gasping for breath. It was as if they choreographed it. "Excellent timing, Ray. Very dramatic." Nik said, smirking.
"What's happening to me?" Ray asked.
"Stefan?" Nik said and Stefan got up and walked to Ray.
"Are any of you human? Your friend here needs human blood to complete his transition to vampire. If he doesn't get it, he will die." Stefan informed them.
"Doesn't take much, just a sip. Anyone? A boyfriend, a girlfriend, along for the ride?" Nik asked before looking at a man. "You." He rushed over to the man and bit his forearm them came back to me. Stefan got to him before he could run away and threw him on the ground in front of Ray. The woman protested but Nik stopped her from going to him by strangling her.
"If you don't drink it, Ray, I will. Problem is I don't know how to stop." Stefan told him. I looked to Nik and the girl and he turned her facing of him.
"It's the new order, sweetheart. You join us, or you die." Nik told her.
"I'd rather die than be a vampire." she told him.
"Wrong choice." he told her and he gave her his blood as Ray drank the blood from the man. "She'll thank me for that later." he said before he broke her neck. "Ok, who's next?" he asked and his eyes were yellow and his fangs were showing.
Nik finished giving his blood and killing the werewolves before giving his blood to the human before compeling him.
"There. Good as new. Now you relax, ok, mate? We're gonna need you when the rest of them wake up." Nik told him.
"They're dead. They're all dead." Ray said, staring at his pack.
"Ah, he's through his transition. He should be feeling better soon." Nik told us, holding me around my waist.
"So is this your master plan? Build an army of hybrid slaves?" Stefan asked him.
"No, not slaves. Soldiers, comrades." Nik told him.
"For what war, might I ask?" Stefan asked him.
"Oh, you don't arm yourself after war has been declared, Stefan. You build your army so big that no one ever dares pick a fight." Nik told him and I looked at him confused.
"What makes you so sure that they'll be loyal to you?" I asked him.
"Well, it's not difficult to be loyal when you're on the winning team. That's something Stefan'll learn once he shakes that horribly depressive chip off his shoulder." Nik told me and I laughed lightly. Stefan laughed sarcastically at him and shook his head.
"That's why you're, uh... you're keeping me around? To witness my attitude adjustment?" Stefan asked him.
"You'll know why I'm keeping you around when I've decided that I want you to know." Nik told him, suddenly I noted Ray had started bleeding from his eyes.
"Something's wrong." I told him.
"That shouldn't be happening, should it?" Stefan asked Nik sarcastically.
"Well, obviously." Nik said getting irritated. Ray started shaking and looked to Nik and I.
"You said it was gonna feel better. Why doesn't it feel better?" Ray asked him.
"Some master race." Stefan told him as Nik pushed me behind him.
"Lose the attitude." Nik told him as the woman woke up. "Derek, come feed your girlfriend." Nik ordered. The man got up and Ray snarled before making a few jumps and left quickly. Nik looked at Stefan from where he was. "Go get him." Nik ordered and Stefan left. Nik took my hand and we followed Stefan to see him holding his arm. "Where did he go?" Nik asked him.
"He, uh... he got away. Forget him. Let's go." Stefan said moving past us. I watched him move past us and saw Elena, Damon, and Alaric walking across the forest, talking. I quickly turned back to the boys.
"A fatal werewolf bite. Ouch." Nik said.
"Yeah. I'm gonna need your blood to heal me." Stefan told him.
"Well, I tell you what. You find Ray, and then I'll heal you." Nik told him and my eyes widened.
"You can't be serious." I told him.
"You better hurry, 'cause that bite looks nasty." Nik said going back to the campsite.
"Stefan, I'm sorry." I told him before following Nik. When I got to the campsite I saw the werewolves had woken up. All their eyes were bleeding. "Oh, my god."
"Bad news, my friend. End of the road for you." Nik said to the man before drinking his blood and killing him. The woman walked in front of him and Nik held his hand out, palm facing me. "Careful, love. There's only one Alpha here." I looked around, backing away, as the werewolves walked to us like zombies.
"Nik..." I called to him and he rushed to me, stepping between me and them as much as possible.
"Bloody Hell." Nik said before they started attacking us. I ducked and stayed out of the way as best as possible as Nik killed them all. Eventually they were all dead and we were both covered in blood as their hears littered the ground around us. Stefan came back with Ray. Dead. "They went rabid. Some of them, I killed. The others just... Bled out. In the end... They're all dead." he said before yelling in anger. "I did everything I was told! I should be able to turn them. I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf. I killed a vampire. I killed the doppelgänger." Nik said and I looked at Stefan. "You look like hell."
"Last I checked, I'm dying... And you don't want to heal me. I had to take him out. I didn't have a choice. I failed you. I'm sorry. Do what you have to do." Stefan told Nik.
"It should have worked." Nik said before taking a bottle of beer from the ground. He bit his wrist and put the blood in the bottle before giving it to Stefan. "Bottoms up. We're leaving. It appears you're the only comrades I have left." Nik said before walking away from us. Stefan drank the blood from the bottle and threw it aside before we followed Nik again.
