Carson City, Province of Fennley.

Savannah Burdne was sitting in her father's office across from his desk. She was sitting in the corner, reading through the mail as he was finishing up a speech to be made to the people of Fennley later that evening declaring how proud he was of the young woman that had been chosen to represent Fennley. Sav's father was Frederick Burdne: the provincial governor of Fennley and he was always busy with his work. It wasn't so much that he was a bad father, it's just that he always prioritized his work and his province over his only daughter. After she had graduated top of her class from a prestigious private school, Governor Burdne had offered his daughter a job as his personal secretary. The job paid well and she was very good at it. Sav had been hoping that working so closely with her father would create some kind of bond between them, even if by force; but it didn't. Her father was a good boss, but he just ended up treating her more like a paid servant than his only child and it irked her to no end.

"Anything of note Savannah?" her father asked as he finished up the report.

"No sir, just the usual bills and reports from county leaders." his daughter answered as the provincial governor turned on the TV. As if on cue, the national anthem of Illèa began to play for cutting to King Peter, first of his name, sitting in a regal looking chair.

"Good afternoon, my fellow Illèans." Peter said with a smile. "I am happy to announce that after going through thousands of applications, I have chosen the thirty five women who will participate in my selection."

"This is the moment, all of Fennley will be watching." Mr. Burdne muttered as his eyes were glued to the screen.

"From the province of Atlin...mx. Tatiana Ford..." Peter said with a smile as Sav too watched with intensity.

"I know father." she replied. Under duress from her father, she had sent in an application for the selection, but she wasn't sure if she would be selected; or if she wanted to be. Eventually, the king came to her province.

"From the province of Fennley...miss Savannah Burdne..." Peter declared as her father smiled with relief.

"This is good news Savannah and it could not have come at a better time." he said as he took her face in his hands.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean we need a good and upright woman to represent Fennley at the selection. We have still barely recovered from last year."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Sav asked.

"Don't be coy, no one has forgotten Yesenia Avalos!" Governor Burdne exclaimed. "We sent a murderer and an impostor to the capital. We were lucky that Maxon did not punish us for such a scandal." Sav remembered well how the details of Yesenia's crimes had been plastered all over the news. For a few weeks, Fennley was the butt of many national jokes.

"Well, I am no Yesenia." Sav assured her father.

"That is why I submitted your name to His Grace, the baron of Yonkers." Frederick insisted. "If you were to marry his majesty or even finish as an elite...it would be a blessing for both of our political careers." Sav nodded as she knew that deep down, her father was doing what he did best: putting politics before parenting.
