Proofshipping (Hiroto Honda x Mai Kujaku)
. . .
"What's that?"
Honda blinked up from the note he had been reading, a blush creeping across his face.
"W-whoa! Mai-san, when did you get there?"
Kujaku Mai blinked at him, raising one perfect eyebrow.
"I called you from over there," she said, pointing down the street. "A little out of it, hm?"
Honda flushed even deeper.
It was early afternoon after testing day. The streets were pretty clear since most people were still at work, and Honda had been making his way down towards the arcade when that girl from Class C rushed over and shoved the note into his hand before running away. He had been so engrossed with the thing that he must not have noticed Mai walking up—although how he could fail to notice Kujaku Mai was something he didn't understand.
She just…attracted the eye without even trying. Something about the way she held herself, how she was taller than him with her heels and it didn't seem to make her less feminine. How her perfectly done makeup was done to enhance rather than transform. She was the literal epitome of walking confidence, and she was already drawing a lot of stares from the people passing by on the streets. Honda groaned mentally. He hoped that none of the gangs around her took offense to him talking to such a pretty woman. Not that he couldn't handle them, but it would be a nuisance.
"So how have you been?" Honda said, dropping his hand to his side with the note. "Haven't seen you for a while."
"Not bad, honestly. How about you and everyone?"
"Eh. Just senior testing. It's a nuisance."
Mai grinned, nodding with understanding.
"Man, I remember those. I wasn't planning on going to college so they were the most useless things I ever did."
"Same here," Honda said, grinning.
"Not going to the university?"
"Nah. Friend of my mom's runs a construction company. I've been working there over the summers and he offered me a permanent position when I graduate."
"Wow," Mai said, raising her eyebrows. "Got yourself set, huh? To be honest, I wasn't actually expecting that drive out of you…guess I shouldn't compare you with Jonouchi."
Honda had to laugh at that.
"Man, that guy. Decided he wanted to go to college this year. He's trying to pull his grades up in time. You should see him; he's a total mess. Studying all the time like a madman. He makes Yugi quiz him on things every lunch period."
Mai laughed, a light, cheerful sound.
"That does sound like him."
She glanced down at the note he was still gripping.
"So anyway…what is that? You were blushing about it…"
"Oh…it's, ah, I dunno. Nothing."
Mai smiled mischievously. Then, with the grace and dexterity of someone who had done this a million times before, her hand darted out and plucked the note from his hand.
"H-hey, Mai, that's private!"
"I'm not reading it. I was just very curious about this scented pink stationary."
She grinned as she sniffed at the back of it, true to her word, she was not reading the back.
"So? Got a secret admirer or something? Or do you usually write your to-do list on floral scented paper?"
"Give me that!"
Honda snatched it back, blushing.
"It's from a girl," he mumbled. "I—I only kinda know her. She's from another class."
"Oooh," Mai said, eyes lighting up. "Love letter?"
"I guess so…"
"Are you going to meet with her?"
"I…probably…"
Mai smiled broadly, clapping her hands together. Then she grabbed Honda by the arm and half dragged him down the street.
"O-oy, Mai! What are you—"
"I'm taking you to that café down the street," she said. "And you are going to tell me allll the details over a cup of coffee. You seem like you like this girl, right? Don't lie."
"W-well, I wouldn't say I hadn't considered…"
"Fantastic! Sounds like you need a little advice then—I saw how you took your feelings for Shizuka-chan and you definitely need a little work on that."
Honda flushed deeper. Oh god, she had been paying attention to that at Battle City?
"So what are we—"
"We're going to give you a crash course in how to accept this cute girl's feelings~"
Honda couldn't help it. He let out a half laugh. This was ridiculous, he realized. Super ridiculous.
"Mai, you're a lot more spontaneous and nice than you pretend to be aren't you?"
Mai just glanced over her shoulder.
And grinned.
