Mercyshipping (Ryo x Cyndia)

He was writing another letter to his sister.

Cyndia sat on the edge of his bed, her hands folded in her lap, as he leaned over his desk to scribble out a response. She smiled slightly at the way he completely ignored the long strands of his white hair falling into his face. It reminded her of Pegasus, and the intense way he would completely block out the world when he was painting.

"Okay," he said, finishing the letter.

He glanced over it. Then he folded it into three and turned around in his chair to face her.

It had been three weeks ago when Ryo Bakura had discovered that he could see ghosts – or at least, a certain ghost. Cyndia had been wandering aimlessly, still waiting for Pegasus to come to her after his own wanderings, and had decided to take a peek at the brother that her wandering friend Amane Bakura was always talking about. She had been so surprised when he looked right at her walking through the wall and fallen out of his chair.

Amane had come with her the next day but...he couldn't see her, for some reason. Cyndia had never met the boy before, so she wondered why Ryo could see her. Ryo thought that perhaps his sight was just awakening slowly, and somehow, she had been the first person he was able to see. Until he could see his sister, then...

"Thank you for doing this," he said, handing the letter to Cyndia.

Cyndia smiled and accepted it, holding it tightly.

"It's no trouble at all," she said. "I understand how you must be feeling."

Ryo ducked his head.

"Thank you," he whispered again.

Cyndia sighed softly.

"She misses you as much as you miss her," she said. "That's why she's so happy...that she can exchange letters with you again."

Ryo blushed slightly, still not able to look at her.

"I...I never thought I would get so lucky as to be able to talk to her again," he murmured. "Cyndia-san...are you certain that there's nothing I can do for you in return? No one that I can talk to for you?"

Cyndia smiled.

"Oh, thank you, Ryo, but all the people I care for have already passed on. I'm simply waiting for his spirit to stop wandering, so that we can move to the next life together."

"Right," Ryo said, clasping and unclasping his hands. "I'm...glad, then. Not that your friends are dead, but that...you can see them again soon."

A silence fell between them for a moment. Just two souls, one living, and one dead, sitting together in the same, ordinary looking bedroom. When Cyndia had been alive, she had been absolutely terrified of ghosts. She smiled at the irony of that now. Ryo Bakura continued to sit with his hands fumbling around each other, as though they weren't sure what to do with themselves. He hadn't looked up at her yet.

He reminded her so, so much of her love. He wasn't much younger than Pegasus had been when he had proposed to her. They had the same silvery-white hair. The same quiet, calm demeanor. And...and he was broken a little on the inside, the way Pegasus had been just after she had died. It made Cyndia's heart clench up to see it on a boy so young, to remember the way that Pegasus had looked. No one should have to feel the loss of someone they loved at such a young age.

On an impulse, she stood up. She glided over to Ryo, her skirt whooshing silently across the floor, then lowered herself to her knees so that she could put her arms around his shoulders. He jumped at first. But then he relaxed at her touch. Cyndia saw the hint of a tear growing at the corner of his eye.

"Ryo," she whispered. "Don't let your sadness keep you from living...okay? Your sister is glad to hear from you...but she wants to see you be happy, okay? I know it's hard. I know. But please...for her sake...will you try?"

Ryo shuddered softly beneath her embrace. Then he nodded silently against her shoulder.

"I'll try," he said softly. "I really will."

Cyndia felt tears growing in her own eyes as well. She swallowed, and pulled away from Ryo.

"I'll be back later," she said. "Stay...stay strong, please?"

Not just for Amane's sake...for mine, too. Let me believe that those who are broken can be healed.

Ryo nodded. Cyndia squeezed his shoulders. Then, quickly, before she could think better of it, she ducked in and kissed him on the cheek. He flushed bright red as she stood up, smiled, and hurried away through the wall.

A/N: For some reason, I really like this pairing. It was really hard to write at first, so I drew some random sketches of these two together, and I liked the way they looked together. Still, I would only ship it in a very AU universe, because my main ships for these two are Softshipping and Roseshipping. :D Next is...aw, dang it...Mentorshipping (Sugoroku x Jonouchi).
