Lonershipping (Mai Kujaku x Yami no Bakura)

. . .

She didn't like the way the boy's eyes changed—much less the fact that they were suddenly an entirely different color.

Mai Kujaku's eyes narrowed and she took a half step back.

"You want to start something?" she snapped. "Because I can introduce you to my heel in your face if you want."

He smirked at her.

"So the bitch has eyes. What tipped you off?"

"I'm not dumb," she said, flicking a perfectly curled bang from her face. "I saw what happened during that duel. And I've known about the other Yugi for a while—it doesn't take a genius to see the matching jewelry set and put two and two together."

He laughed, and despite her bravado, it sent a crawling feeling down her spine.

"You are a catty one, aren't you?"

She clenched her jaw and flipped him off. She was so fricking tired of men and their stupid intimidation tactics. He grinned back at her and returned the gesture.

"You don't have to worry your little head. I don't have any business with you."

"What are you doing here, then, in an empty hallway with just me?"

"You happened to be passing. I happened to be passing. You're the one that started something."

"You were staring at me—and I don't appreciate that."

He only smiled lazily at her.

"Oh my...how terrible. Someone had the gall to gaze upon your divinity."

He barked a soft laugh.

"I can't wait until the shadows eat you," he said. "And then we'll see who's brave."

He smiled at her one last time, sending another involuntary shudder through her. And then, without a word, he was sweeping past her, and leaving her alone in the dark hallway.

Good riddance to him, she thought.

But the cold clinging to her heart didn't release her for some time after...
