Kleptoshipping (Yami Bakura x Yugi)
. . .
Yugi gave a big, contented sigh.
It was an absolutely gorgeous night to go camping, with the clear sky revealing stars twinkling between the tree tops over head, and the just-cool-enough breeze that matched perfectly with the heat of the campfire on Yugi's face. He turned his marshmallow stick slowly, just listening to the night birds and the rustle of animals in the trees.
Everyone else had already fallen asleep, it seemed. Jonouchi's marshmallow had fallen into the fire, and he was snoring with the side of his face pressed against Honda's shoulder. Honda had also fallen asleep leaning on Jonouchi, which appeared to have balanced them enough to stop them from falling backwards off the bench they were sitting on. Anzu had gone into her tent about an hour ago, apologizing for being unable to stay awake. Even the other him had drifted off into his soul room and closed the door; whether or not he actually slept in the way other people did, though, Yugi wasn't sure.
The soft padding of sneakers across scattered leaves caused Yugi to look up. He could see the bouncing beam of the flashlight before he could see Ryo coming back from the bathroom.
"Did you find it okay?" Yugi said.
"Yeah. It's certainly much different in the dark though, isn't it?"
"Tell me about it. Everything looks totally weird. It's like a whole other place at night."
"Mm."
Ryo picked his way around the fire. He glanced at Jonouchi and Honda with a wry smile for a moment, then made his way back to his seat next to Yugi. Yugi pulled his marshmallow back away from the fire. Aww. It had burned. With a resigned sigh, he leaned over the arm of his chair to fumble for the graham crackers and chocolate.
"Did you want to make another s'more, Bakura-kun? We've got plenty of marshmallows left..."
Ryo didn't answer. Confused, Yugi glanced up.
Ryo's eyes had transformed from a bright green to a deep, malicious purple. Yugi sucked in a breath, but Bakura was faster. He grabbed Yugi's wrist, yanked him forward, and clapped a hand over his mouth.
"Quietly, little host. We wouldn't want to wake your dear friends, would we?"
Yugi tried to pull out of Bakura's grip – but he was crazy strong for his slight frame!
"Now, are you going to shout? Or can we have a polite chat? Really, you jump to conclusions so quickly."
Yugi swallowed. He nodded quietly.
"Good. You are reasonable, aren't you?"
He let go of Yugi. Yugi immediately jumped to his feet and took a few steps back. Yami Bakura smiled indulgently.
"I don't bite, Yugi. At least, not very hard."
"What do you want?" Yugi asked.
"I was hoping the pharaoh was around. So I could mess with him. Would you mind calling him for me?"
"No. He's sleeping."
"Ah," Yami Bakura said, eyes narrowing slightly and smile widening. "Is he, now..."
"You won't touch him. Ever."
Bakura just smiled with his teeth showing this time, looking like a predator. Yugi felt a shudder run down his back.
Bakura stood up lazily, and Yugi took another hop back.
"You really do care about him, don't you? How adorable. If only my host was as accommodating to me."
"Other me and I are friends," Yugi snapped. "You just hurt Ryo. You hurt him and you do terrible things to the people he cares about. It's no wonder why he fights you all the time –"
And then he had to stop because Yami Bakura was suddenly much, much too close, his face right up in Yugi's, the dark purple eyes glittering and smile glinting. Bakura's fingers took a tight hold on Yugi's chin, forcing the shorter boy to look up at him.
"So fiery," he whispered. "Ever since I first saw you, you've been so fascinating. You're only a human, and yet you stand up to me so easily. So small, and yet you try to act so tall. Is it the pharaoh's influence? Or is it your own soul?"
"Get away!"
Yugi pushed him back.
Yami Bakura threw his head back and laughed.
"The pharaoh got lucky, didn't he, the bastard," Yami Bakura said, after his laughter had died down. "To have found a host with so much spirit, so much precious care for his friends. To have found a host that would consider him a friend, even after all the things he's done."
"I'm not listening to you lie about him," Yugi said, fists clenching. "Get out of Bakura-kun's head."
Yami Bakura flashed another wolfish grin at him.
"All right, all right, I shall take my leave," he said, holding up his hands. "But know this, little host of the pharaoh...I know how much the pharaoh means to you...and how much you mean to the pharaoh..."
He looked practically demonic in the firelight, just barely illuminating his evil expression.
"I will enjoy seeing the look on his face when I kill you in front of him...I wonder if he would ever recover...?"
He laughed again. Then he sat down in his chair and closed his eyes. They fluttered open again, green glinting in the fire.
"Mm? Yugi, sorry did you say something?" Ryo asked. "Oh, no, you dropped your marshmallow on the ground."
He picked up the stick and tried to brush off the marshmallow vainly.
"Sorry, did I do that? I'll make you another one...Yugi? Yugi, are you all right?"
Yugi was shaking, he realized suddenly. He stared down at his palm. It trembled. Was it anger? Or fear?
He let his palm curl into a fist.
"Sorry, I'm fine," he said. "Just...thought I heard something in the woods...must have been a squirrel."
He sat back down in his chair. Gingerly. Nervously. It wasn't fair to Ryo but...
He felt a little nervous sitting next to him, even if hewasn't there right now.
Ryo started to push another marshmallow onto a stick, and Yugi glanced sidelong at the white-haired boy. His hands curled into fists in his lap.
I'll fight you,he thought. I'll fight you, Yami Bakura. And I'll be ready for you.
