. . .

He had no power over her, and it was the most frustrating experience in all his short existence.

He hated the scornful look in her eyes, shining green irises flat with condescension, the way her lip curled at the sight of him, the way her fingers curled tighter around her staff—less in a defensive position, more as though in preparation to use to smack a cockroach.

She didn't even have the decency to spare him a word, not even a snarl or a slur. She just glared at him, glared at the tiny mote of shadow that he had been reduced to as though it were a flea she could flick. He knew that even if he hadn't been consigned to near non-existence, even if he had held the Rod once again, he would stillexert no power over her. She was not of this world, she could not be bent to his will.

And for that, he hated her.

"I'll destroy everything you love."

She merely rolled her eyes.He hissed, tried to stretch his remains as large as they would go.

"Your precious master, I'll kill him. I'll be back, and I'll destroy him. I'll throw him to the shadows to be consumed."

A smirk—she smirkedat him.

"I'd almost like to see you try," she whispered.

For a moment, her fingers curled around his shadowy shape, as though in a strange caress. And then they tightened, balling around him, strangling the little shadow in her fist.

"But let's get one thing straight."

He could not breathe, she was smothering him. He wondered, then, if the pharaoh had ever seen his precious servant this way. If she had even shown this face to him, the curled up contortion of anger and cruelty.

"Anyone that threatens him dies."

For a moment, all he could do was laugh. An echoing thing that emanated, vibrated from his shadowy form. Oh, if only the pharaoh could see her like this! With the hate and the malice in her eyes, a far cry from the sweet, bubbly apprentice that so often graced his field!

He may have no power over her, but at least he could take glee in the fact that she was as malicious as he was—she was merely better at hiding it.

"And what do you think he would think of you like this?"he had to laugh. "What do you think he would think?"

She merely smiled. And it was a cruel thing, a darkness that no one but her enemies would ever see. And they would not live to tell the tale.

"He'll never have to know."

He was still laughing when she crushed him in her hand.

The laughter continued to echo through the darkness as she let his dust slide out from between her fingers.

She did not look back as she left her victim's remains to scatter to the winds of darkness.
