On May 29, the world of music lost a great singer. BJ Thomas passed away at age 78.
Sofia2017 planning suggested this classic BJ Thomas song, so enjoy your request! In chapter 4 of my story The Missing Memory Mystery, Roland recalls a few songs that he used to sing to Amber when she was little, and now he's hoping that one of them will help restore her memory or break the spell she's under. He shares the memory with Miranda, unaware that Amber is listening as well, even though she doesn't know what's going on. Penny is a character created by theblindwriter95. BJ Thomas' music is not mine, and on a more serious note, rest in peace, BJ Thomas.
Miranda smiled as she tried to listen to the stories that were being read around the throne room. It was very clever, and considerate, of Dorrie to put the spell that read the story to Penny on the folders so she could hear them. She also thought it was a good idea for James, Miss Elodie, and Sofia to go to different corners so the voices wouldn't overlap. However, she thought she was hearing a different voice next to her. It didn't sound like one of the stories that was being read, so she looked around and heard Roland singing something to himself. "What song is that, Rollie?"
"It's just a song I sang to Amber when she was younger," Roland smiled. "When we were done with her bedtime stories, she'd sometimes say, 'Sing my song, Daddy!', so I sang her to sleep with one of her favorites." He didn't know that Sir Finnegan and Amber were listening at the door as he began softly singing. He also thought back to one of the times he sang to her.
Flashback
Eight-year-old Amber was in bed for the night, and she was smiling as Roland told her about how he and Melinda helped James feel better after having his story ripped up then restored. When he was able to stop laughing, following the family's favorite game, she had given James the picture of the monkey she'd made for him as well, and he loved it.
"That's why I didn't join you; I was putting the finishing touches on his picture," Amber had said when Roland asked why she hadn't joined him and Melinda in cheering James up. She'd heard James laughing as he tried to sing, but she wanted to finish his present before she gave it to him or joined the family's game, since she liked it as much as they did.
"I understand," Roland nodded, "You can join the game whenever you're ready. But you know this sort of activity is more fun as a family!" he chuckled as he covered her face with kisses, smiling as Amber giggled under him. "And just like that, a game I can play with you! But for now, are you ready to go to sleep?"
"Almost," Amber settled back on her pillows with her plush cat Duchess Kitty and her plush bear Princess Sparkle Bear, "Sing my song, Daddy?"
Roland grinned. "I knew I was forgetting something!" He kissed her forehead as he sang one of her favorite lullabies.
I just can't help believing
When she smiles up soft and gentle
With a trace of misty morning
And a promise of tomorrow in her eyes
And I just can't help believing
When she's lying close beside me
And my heart beats with the rhythm of her sigh
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day
"I love this song," Amber smiled.
"Yes, ever since you were little, this has always been a favorite song of yours," Roland smiled as he continued the song.
I just can't help believing
When she slips her hand in my hand
And it feels so small and helpless
That my fingers fold around it like a glove
He smiled as Amber squeezed his hand before lying back down.
And I just can't help believing
When she's whispering her magic
And her tears are shining honey sweet with love
He nuzzled Duchess Kitty and Princess Sparkle Bear against her before tucking them in with her. "Let's get your friends tucked in with you too."
"Okay," Amber smiled as Roland finished the song.
This time the girl is gonna stay
This time the girl is gonna stay
For more than just a day
For more than just a day
I just can't help believing
I just can't help believing
I just can't help believing
Roland smiled as Amber fell asleep. "Good night, sweetheart."
"Night, Daddy…" Amber murmured.
End flashback
"I might have to sing that to her and see if it jogs her memory," Roland concluded his story.
"It's worth a shot," Miranda agreed.
At the same time, Amber was watching at the door with Sir Finnegan, wondering where she'd heard such a pretty song before, and hoping she'd be able to hear it again soon.
