Memories of Other Things - 5 - Absorbing Habit

I gave up on the series. Heroes.

All fiction is derivative and fan fiction doubly so. I make no claim to own any part of any of the following, all I have done is an attempt to put together the elements in a novel fashion, using words and ideas like Lego ™ bricks.

Memories of Other Things - 5 - Absorbing Habit
.
The man formerly known as Gabriel Grey was, amongst other things, a serial eavesdropper.
While he had been following the list of the newly minted empowered generously donated by the late Dr. Mohinda Suresh, he wasn't above keeping an ear out for others who may not have made the list.
Just this afternoon, he had overheard a discussion of one such. A man who had a talent for mechanisms, not unlike his own first talent. Of course, one of his secondary talents was to be able to absorb a talent by "eating", actually absorbing the brain of another with talents. The whole process, now that he had refined his technique, took under a second.
He didn't have to, but he liked to leave the decerebrated corpses with their heads opened, purely for its shock and horror value.
.
Invisible, he entered his target's workshop, and found the man busy turning some intricate part on an industrial metal lathe.
Syler crept up, invisible and silent behind his target and exerted his power through pure reflex. As he did so, he realised his mistake.
His victim simply continued to stand there, frozen. A crown of olive green fluid leaking down his face.
Syler, on the other hand, started to convulse as he lost control of his body; as he lost control of his powers. He felt the toxic hydraulic oil causing embolism after embolism in his body and brain.
Syler's last conscious impression as he lay on his side facing the workshop's back room was of his target entering the workshop, beyond the alloy cranium of the machine he had just absorbed.
