Conceitshipping (Kujaku Mai/Yami Bakura)
. . .
"You look awful," she observed, glancing him up and down. "Heard from your friends you just got out of the hospital. Sure you're okay to duel?"
If there was one thing Bakura hated more than anything, it was being condescended to.
He forced a fake smile, though, as he was supposed to be innocent Bakura Ryo today, and seeing as he was in the middle of the lobby slash buffet area for the Battle City finals, where all of Yugi's simpering friends were, it wouldn't do to lose his cover for a lack of composure.
"I'm perfectly fine, really," he said with a laugh, pumping his arm up and down. "See? Ready and raring to go."
The woman called Kujaku Mai arched one eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. But then she shrugged, reaching past him to put a few more appetizers onto her plate.
"Well, I can't say I'm not impressed by someone who puts so much effort into dueling," she said. "Hope to have a match or two against you. What kind of deck do you run?"
"Isn't that bad taste to try and get a feel for someone's strategy before you face them?" Bakura said, trying to look innocent.
Mai smirked slightly.
"At least you're not dumb," she said. She crunched onto a cracker, chewing briefly. "But I have nothing to hide. I run Harpies and Amazonesses. You can know what's coming, but it will still take you out."
She actually winked. God, Bakura hated everything about this woman. He forced one more smile.
"You're very confident," he said. "I really hope I get a chance to face you!"
So I can knock you down a few pegs, Bakura thought privately.
Mai blinked once, and then, a slow, fascinated smile grew over her face. She popped a grape into her mouth and crunched it. Then to Bakura's horror, she reached out to ruffle his hair.
"Just don't die before we get a chance to," she said, jokingly. "See ya around, kid."
Bakura could not remember the last time he had wanted to murder someone so badly. But as Mai's bouncy blonde hair sauntered away, he found himself imagining how many different ways he could kill that condescending bitch...
