Cardshipping (Mutou Sugoroku/Mutou Yugi)

. . .

"Jii-chan, jii-chan, look at this!"

Sugoroku glanced up from the counter he was wiping down to see his grandson toddling down the stairs. His legs were so short that he had to sit down at the edge of each step and slide on his butt to the next step instead of walking down normally; his hands were otherwise occupied with something that he clutched to his chest.

"Whatcha got there?" he said,. He tucked his rag into his overall pocket and crouched down as Yugi slid down the last step and scampered over to meet his grandpa.

Yugi had that big, childish grin of a toddler who's just done something very impressive, chewing on his bottom lip.

"You gotta guess," Yugi said.

"Hm, all right," Sugoroku said. He huffed, settling himself down on the ground and rubbing his chin. Yugi bounced on his heels. "Do I get a hint?"

"Nuh-uh."

"That's one tough game you've set up there, lad," Sugoroku said, laughing. "All right. Is it...a game?"

"You're hot," Yugi said.

"It's a specific game, then. Is it...your wire puzzle game? Did you solve it?"

"Jii-chan, I finished that one last week."

"That's right, you did. Hm. How many guesses do I get?"

"One more, jii-chan," Yugi said, his big eyes sparkly.

Sugoroku made a show of thinking very carefully, then he smiled, bopping Yugi softly on the nose.

"Is it the Rubik's Cube I gave you yesterday?"

"You win!" Yugi said, laughing as he revealed the—surprisingly finished—Rubik's Cube. "Yugi's all done, jii-chan!"

Sugoroku's smile actually slipped with surprise. Already? He took the cube from Yugi and turned it around—yup, it was perfect. Yugi must have stayed up all night to work on it; that was truly impressive.

"You really are my grandson, you little scamp," Sugoroku said, ruffling Yugi's hair to get a giggle out of Yugi. "I'll have to find some harder challenges for you to try out. Why don't you go and pick out a game from the shelves as a prize?"

Yugi's entire frame lit up, and he squealed softly. He threw his arms around Sugoroku's neck briefly, smothering him a bit with his childish hug. Then he scampered off around the counter to go look at the games. Sugoroku stood up with the Rubik's Cube still in his hand, dusting off the back of his overalls. He shook his head softly at the spiky haired silhouette of Yugi looked through each game on the bottom shelves in turn, carefully considering each one.

He really is my grandson, he thought again, looking at the finished Cube. I wonder how he'll keep surprising me.
