Breathshipping (Shadi x Cyndia)
. . .
"If you hate me, you may simply say so."
The woman simply tilted her head, golden hair shining loose and free, almost to her ankles. It had been up in a fancy updo in every image Shadi had ever seen of her, but here, in the place of death, it was let loose to rustle in the wind.
"I don't hate you," she said. "I dislike you. But hate takes too much energy."
She looked younger than she ever had in life. Death did that to a person. It made them into what they saw themselves. She must have seen herself as something wispy and sylph-like, like a faery dancing in the breeze. She lived in a part of the afterlife where flowers always grew, and he sometimes saw her running through them, laughing with her head tilted up into the wind as she ran as fast as she could like she never could when she was alive and sickly.
He didn't know what he looked like in the afterlife. He was sure he wouldn't like it.
"I used the one you loved," he said.
"I know," she said. "And I won't forgive you for it."
She tilted her head and let her hair floof out with a flower-scented breeze.
"But you're here now. There's nothing else that can be done. And he's happy and safe in the end. Perhaps he never would have been if he had not received that Eye, and met the people that he did."
She smiled, then, and he realized that it was full of a light that he never had and never could understand. Humanity was full of a beauty it did not know it possessed. And he had never been able to see it.
"So perhaps, in a way, I should thank you," she said. "Who knows what would have happened to him if he didn't take the path he did. We must take the tears with the laughter."
And she bowed briefly, turning on her heel in a whirlwind of gold, and raced back into the flowers. He remained where he was, in the shadow of the trees.
Maybe he would deserve to stand out there in the light someday.
But not today.
