Ladies and gentlemen! I humbly welcome you to the sixth chapter of this story!
Please enjoy and review!

Weekend came and passed without much revelations happening.

On Saturday, Kaito had a lot of fun with his impromptu show at the park, especially with how delighted Aoko seemed seeing him perform the teleportation trick. It wasn't easy to perform, especially without Jii acting as his counterweight, but he had enough time to figure it out and improve, so he managed to make it work perfectly. His drew quite a crowd too, which not only made the trick easier for him but also boosted his ego. Aoko did try to figure out how he did it but despite how smart she was - she was no Meitantei(1), so the secret remained, much to her chagrin. Later, as they walked back home, he had made a little stop and sent the emerald he stole to Ginzo, so he didn't need to worry about that.

He spent pretty much the rest of the day and the whole Sunday on research. However, as unsurprising as it was, looking into gems he stole in the last few months, didn't really bore much promise. There was one diamond, which was said to bring great misfortune to its owner, however it was already three months since Kaito took it and he returned it the same day, so he doubted that this could be the reason for the supernatural situation he has gotten himself involved in.

His research into creatures that were rumored to live in Japan, were able to fly, had claws and might or might not have strangely colored hair proved even more pointless… While he did find about quite a few that fit the profile, most were pure evil and Kaito simply refused to believe that he could be something like it. Quickly it started feeling useless altogether, as the more he read, the more he understood that had too little information to go on and it was just a guessing game that wouldn't take him anywhere.

With that out of the way, he looked at the strand under the microscope and confirmed that it was real hair and the color wasn't dyed. But nothing else really. This had him spiraling again into thinking about the whole situation he had somehow gotten himself into.

The more he looked at the hair and scratch marks in his hidden room, the more he thought that it was actually plausible it was his. Despite that he didn't really know why or how it could be possible. And he wanted to know that, so he could recreate it. Not only would it be the one sure way to find out what it was but also it would surely be simply useful if it was truly his hidden power.

Being able to fly without his glider or anything like it? Yes, please. Especially with how often he found himself in tight spots. It could prove to be a literal life saver. Though he really hoped that he would be able to fully control himself after the change. If not, he could only use it as a last resort.

After his research into the gems, he pretty much excluded the possibility that this was caused by a cursed object, which left him with three possibilities. One was that it was a result of a spell which some third, unknown party had cast on him. Second was that it was his reaction due to his near death experience. And third, that it was all Saguru's fault. Which not only sounded amusing but also made the most sense. This was, after all, the first time he saw a real life dragon. On the other hand, if he believed Akako, he had some kind of immunity to magic spells and it wasn't the first time he nearly died.

It was also probably the easiest to check since he could most likely expect Saguru to show him his dragon form again. Which at the same time was a problem because he didn't have control when exactly it would happen. And during their last encounter at school, Saguru had told Kaito that he wanted to share his secret. If he still intended to do that, he would have to show him his dragon form. It's not like he could just say something like 'I'm a dragon, believe me, please'.

Kaito did want to get everything he could out of Saguru, but if his other form was his trigger, it would immediately out him as… whatever he was. And, at the very least until he found out exactly what Saguru wanted from him, he wanted to avoid it at all costs. Which meant that he would have to avoid speaking with him in private altogether, effectively cutting off his best source of finding out what the hell was going on.

Which was a headache in itself.

Though he could probably expect Saguru to try and approach KID the next chance he got. It was dangerous, however. The guy did seem to be acting rather friendly towards Kaito, when he still believed he was who he was looking for. But he couldn't be sure if he would be the same towards KID, who he now thought he didn't know personally…

Kaito wasn't sure he wanted to risk it but he didn't have any better plan. At least as KID he could simply run the moment he felt threatened without causing any suspicion.

He pondered for a long while about how and when he should try it. There was a gem he picked with Jii as his next target some time ago. It would be still on display for the next month, so there wasn't any rush. Especially that he prefered to be in top condition during a heist and his back still needed a few days to fully recover. But if he did it before next weekend then he could go alone again, without Jii assisting him and possibly finding out anything, as the man was away on family business.

Weighing out all pros and cons, Kaito prepared the notice for Tuesday. He wouldn't have the time to prepare anything grand, but for once he didn't really care about it. He could barely spare a thought to the gem he was going to steal either.

He sent the notice on Sunday to the police station.

It did seem like Saguru took the bait when he didn't show up at school on Monday. His continued absence on Tuesday raised Aoko's concerns. And while Kaito would have loved to confirm that the detective didn't just leave Japan he decided to convince her to leave the guy alone for now, explaining that he was most likely busy with a case and wouldn't appreciate distractions. He was worried that showing up might cause Saguru to recall his promise and decide to give away his secret to Kaito, or do something else which he couldn't anticipate.

All that was left was to prepare for the heist, especially creating as many escape routes as he could think of and a silicone mask, similar enough to his face, for it to look close enough to his own from a distance but different on closer inspection, so that Saguru would be certain of his mistake about his identity once and for all.

Before the heist, Kaito made sure to contact Jii and assure the man that everything was fine.

"Botchama(2)…" the old man pleaded "I really wish you were more patient…"

Neither of them would risk speaking of any details through the phone but it's not like they had to since it was obvious to both of them what they were talking about.

"Maah, you worry too much, Jii-chan~ You know I can handle everything. You need to let me stand on my own sometimes~ Besides, next week I have some tests and I need to prepare for them, so there was no choice really."

He could practically hear the worried frown in Jii's grunt. The man probably wanted to argue but knew that there was no point, so eventually he sighed. "I believe in you, botchama… But please be careful."

Kaito didn't try to hide a fond smile on his lips. It was nice to have someone who cared for his well being. "Don't worry too much. We'll talk after you return. Try to have fun in the meantime, alright? You know I will~" he added with an audible grin.

That made the old man snort with amusement. "Alright, take care till then, botchama."

"You too Jii-chan," he replied softly and ended the call.

With a heavy sigh, he picked his equipment and made the last preparations before leaving for the museum. That done, he cast one last glance at the strand of indigo hair and swallowed thickly. Hopefully after today he would get at least some of the answers…

As a last measure, he took out the cologne he bought just for the occasion. It smelled fancy enough at the store to fit KID's character, so he hoped that it would work. He wrinkled his nose as he sprayed it over his wrists and started coughing wildly after accidentally inhaling it when applying on his neck. He was looking forward to the night less and less now.

"It's showtime…" he whispered without fanfare, failing to fool himself that he would be having fun, like he told Jii he would, and left the safety of his house.

(1) Meitantei - translates to 'great detective', it's a respective term highlighting great process of a detective, in the series Kaito uses it as a nickname for Shinichi;

(2) botchama - in literal translation it means 'young master', it is often used by servants when speaking to a young person they speak with, Jii uses it when speaking with Kaito out of respect to his father.

Hope to see you next chapter *bows*
