Chapter 7: First Date
I thought my heart was going to explode the moment I walked out my apartment. I had spent at least half an hour looking at myself in the mirror to check if the clothes I'm wearing were okay and if my hair was cool enough. But that was only part of the reason why I was so nervous. I was going to take Sora out on our first date and I really wanted things to go well.

I didn't tell her what we were going to do because I wanted to surprise her. I had bought two tickets for a chick-flick movie I thought she would enjoy. I'm not really a fan of these kind of movies, but I was willing to get past it for her.

I rang the doorbell from her apartment and waited for her to open it. I was leaning against the wall opposite her door when she came.
"Hey."
"Hi." I turned around and was thankful the wall was high enough so I wouldn't fall down. "Wow, you look stunning."
"Thanks." She blushed and hid her face with her hands. "You don't look so bad yourself."
"Thank you." I felt my own cheeks burning and shook my head. "So, should we go?"
"Sure." She began to head to the elevator and I followed her closely.

.

There wasn't anyone in the elevator, which I found great because I really wanted to kiss her again. I reached down for her hand and held it within mine as I wrapped my arm around her and pulled her towards me. We were standing only millimeters away from each other and I could feel her nervousness with our proximity.
"So where are we going?"
"It's a surprise."
"Ah come on." She complained. "Not even a hint?"
"Nope. You'll find out when we get there."
"Not cool."
"It'll be worth the wait, I promise."
"Okay, I'll trust you."
"Good." I whispered and brushed a lock of her hair softly as I stared into her beautiful cinnamon eyes.
I was much more surprised by the fact she had slid her hand behind my back than by the fact she also wanted to kiss me. I wrapped my arms around her waist as soon as I felt her lips against mine and immediately responded to the kiss. I pulled her closer to me when it became deeper, only letting go of her when the elevator reached the ground floor.
"Ah I wish we didn't arrive so fast."
"I know you will definitely make fun of me, but me too."
"Really? I'll use that in my favor then, let's go." I took her hand and led her out of the elevator.

.

"So you opted for the same old cliché in movies, I see." Sora stated lightly as we stood outside the cinema at the mall.
"Yeah, I admit I wasn't very creative in our first date, but I guarantee it's a cool movie."
"I hope it is." She stared at the popcorn booth. "Are we getting a popcorn bucket?"
"Sure, why not?"
"You know, I thought I would be feeling uncomfortable with us going on a date, but I'm really not."
"That's good to know." I reached down for her hand and laced my fingers with hers.
"It is." She nodded. "I almost cancelled it and I'm glad I didn't."
"Me too." I smiled. "To be honest, I feared you'd say no to me and decline this invitation."
"Well, I guess I'm more open to the idea right now."
"I'm happy to hear that." I smiled widely at her. "We should get going now. The movie is about to start."

At some point during the movie, the main couple had a sweet romantic scene and I heard Sora saying a low 'awww' beside me. I turned around at the same she held my hand. She brushed my hair softly and I looked at her intently, barely seeming to realize I had my head tilted to my left and was aiming down towards her lips. Her arms wrapped around my neck the moment our lips touched for the second time that night, and we completely forgot about the movie for some minutes. I stroked her cheeks softly for some seconds after we pulled away from each other.
"We should really go back to watching the movie. I'm surprised people haven't either said something or thrown things at us."
"And I'm glad for that." I laughed feeling somewhat relieved for that and intertwined her fingers with mine as I leaned back on my seat.

When the lights turned on again, I found Sora crying her eyes out because of the movie. She gave an awkward laugh and wiped the tears from her eyes.
"You weren't supposed to see this."
"What? You crying over the movie?"
"Yeah."
"Well, it's kinda hard to ignore it since you're right next to me."
"You have a point."
"So, what did you think of it?"
"I really liked it. But to be honest, I was surprised to see you actually picked a romantic movie."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah, I would think you probably would choose an action movie or something along these lines."
"That's an understatement. Guys can like romantic comedies too."
"That's true. I didn't mean to be rude, insensitive or anything."
"I know, that's okay." He said in a light tone.
"Thank you." Sora smiled gently. "What about you though? Did you like it?"
"Yes, yes, I did. Wanna know a secret?"
"Sure."
"I chose this movie for you."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I wanted to impress you."
"Oh I see. So you didn't get to see it first."
"No, but I read about it first." I admitted. "Like I said, I wanted to impress you."
"Well, you did a good job, I have to admit."
"Mission accomplished then." I looked around the room and noticed everyone had already left but us. "Looks like we're the only ones here."
"We should probably go." Sora stood up and walked past me. Then she looked over her shoulder. "Aren't you coming?"
"I am." I quickly stood up and reached for her hand, lacing our fingers together.
"So… do you have something else planned for tonight? I was actually having fun."
"We can definitely do something else. I'm having fun as well." I dragged her down the stairs.
"Yamato, we're gonna fall down if we keep this pace. Slow down."
"Oops, I'm sorry." I immediately decreased my speed and waited until the stairs were over to run again. "Let's go."

Sora had to apologize to a few people on their way because I wasn't exactly paying attention to our surroundings.
"Yamato, pay attention. We're running over people here." She squeezed my hand hoping I would listen to her. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine." I said over my shoulder. "I'm sorry, I'm a little nervous. And I'm making a fool out of myself in front of you."
"Hey." Sora grabbed my arm and made me turn around to look at her. "You don't need to be nervous. We're best friends, remember?"
"Sora, I don't think we can label ourselves only best friends anymore."
"You're probably right. So are you feeling better now?"
"I am." I nodded with a smile. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." She smiled back. "What did you want to do, by the way?"
"I wanted to take you to the arcade."
"Alright, let's go there then."

"You know, this is unfair." Sora complained playfully. "I'm terrible at this."
"It seemed pretty fair to me."
"Of course you'd say that, you won."
"That's right."
"Well, I'm going to choose the game now."
"Fair enough."
"I want to play this one." She stopped near one with a bunch of holes and a fake hammer.
"Oh God, you want to hit someone or something as revenge. I don't know if I feel relieved or worried."
"Wait, you think I chose this game because I wanted to hit you?"
"Well…"
"What?! I can't believe this!" She shouted. "I could never hit my best friend."
"I know. I was just kidding."
"This isn't funny."
"I'm sorry. It was insensitive of me and I apologize."
"Apology accepted. Can we play now?"
"Sure."

.

The subway platform somehow was colder than outside and Sora shivered because of the cold temperatures.
"I hate winter."
"Oh come on, it's a nice season."
"No, it's not."
"We have snow, Christmas, New Year's…"
"Well, I like Christmas, if that counts for something." She shivered again.
"Are you cold?"
"I think this is a rhetorical question." She laughed. "A little bit."
"Come here." I pulled her towards me and wrapped my arms around her. "Is it better?"
"Yes, but I think we shouldn't be doing it."
"Why not? We're not doing anything wrong."
"We're acting like we're dating." She stepped away from my grasp. "We need to remember we're still only best friends."
"Except we aren't best friends anymore. We kissed. Not only once, several times." I said exasperated, nearly shouting. "And honestly, I don't want to be your friend. I don't think I can do that anymore. I want to be your boyfriend. I don't know why it's so hard to understand."
"Maybe I don't want to!" Sora exploded. "We were much better off as childhood friends and without feelings getting in the way. Now everything is a mess and I just wish everything would go back to normal."
"Things won't go back to normal after everything that had already happened."
"I better go home."
"We are going."
"No, I mean alone. I need to go home alone."
"Why is this so suddenly?" I looked right into her cinnamon eyes. "What are you afraid of?"
"I'm not afraid. I just don't want to risk us not working and having this awkward mood between us. I could never forgive myself if that happened. So I think it's best if we stop it while things don't get too serious."
"Is that what you really want?"
"Yes, that's what I really want." Sora said firmly.
"Alright then." I bit my lower lip and looked away disappointed.

"I'm sorry about the way I reacted a little earlier." Sora said after she thought things were too tense and uncomfortable between us and couldn't take it any longer. "I didn't mean to take things out on you or overreact the way I did."
"That's alright." I replied a little coldly.
She bit her lower lip and looked away. "I'm sorry for ruining our night. You put so much effort into it and I feel really bad."
"Don't worry about it."
"Hey." She tentatively reached for my hand, hoping I would look at her. "Can we talk about this?"
"There's nothing to talk about. You said you want to be just friends and I don't. I think it's pretty obvious it won't work like this."
"Yeah, but…"
"Look, it's pointless to argue over this. We'll never agree with each other, so let's just leave things this way."
"I can't leave things like this because I'll miss my best friend. This is what I was afraid of in the first place."
"And you didn't even let your mind be changed. You didn't give me the chance to change your mind."
"I'm scared, okay? I'm confused. I don't really know how I'm feeling and I wish you could just be more understanding about it."
"I think we should stay a few days away from each other."
"I think so too." Sora nodded. "Then we'll see what happens."
"That's true." I shoved my hands into my pants' pockets.
"I can go home on my own, you don't have to worry about it."
"Well, we live in the same apartment complex, remember? So we have to go in the same direction anyway."
"That's true."

"I know this will sound hypocrite, but I want to thank you for tonight." Sora said when we arrived home.
"You're welcome."
"Hey." She impulsively reached for my hand and I looked at her. "I don't want you to be upset with me."
"I'm not upset with you."
"You can't even look at me."
"Well, can you blame me?"
"Not really." She sighed deeply and took her hand away. "I guess I'll see you later. Or soon."
"Sure." I turned around and began to walk away.
"Yamato, wait!"
I barely had time to turn around before her arms wrapped around my neck while she threw herself in my direction. I was completely taken by surprise when she kissed me and my first reaction was to hold her close and kiss her back.
"What was that about?" I asked confused after we pulled away from each other.
"I wanted to be impulsive for a second time tonight." She said simply, with a smile.
"You want to be impulsive for a third one?" I whispered, still close to her face.
"I think three is my lucky number."
"What a coincidence, it's mine too."
"No, it isn't." She teased. "You're only saying it because you want to impress me."
"Maybe I am."
"Maybe?"
"Fine." I rolled my eyes and laughed before looking intensely at her again. "So do you still want to be impulsive another time or not?"
"As a matter of fact…" She brushed my hair tenderly and looked back at me just as intensely. "I do."
"So do it, I'm waiting."
"It's not very polite to keep someone waiting."
"No, it isn't." I couldn't wait any longer, so I kissed her instead.
I would be lying if I said I didn't want to kiss her again after what happened earlier that night. I was still angry at her, but at the same time I couldn't hold it against her for being confused. But she was standing so close to me I just couldn't resist kissing her.
Sora let out a small moan when I began to pull my head back and slowly opened her eyes again.
"Three is definitely my lucky number." She gave me a light smile and quickly became serious again. "I know I'll probably sound repetitive and annoying, but I'm sorry for tonight."
"That's okay, let's leave it behind. Sora?"
"Yes?"
"Do you want to be my girlfriend?"
