Chp. 2: Watching Earth's Attacks
June 10, 2020
The next day, Watson was sitting on the sofa watching the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh on the television in the middle of the day. A moment later, a knock on the front door was heard. Watson gets up from the chair and walks over to the door. He opens it revealing it to be Lucas.
"Hey, Watson. I just came up to check on you after what had happened yesterday," Lucas said.
"I'm doing fine right now," Watson replied.
Lucas walks inside as Watson closes the door behind them. They both stepped into the living room and then sat on the sofa.
"I thought you'd be watching something like Henry Danger or something," Lucas said.
"That crap show? It's shit. The old shows like Drake and Josh are always better," Watson said.
"Good point," Lucas said.
Suddenly an emergency broadcast system went off on the television, catching the two boys' attention.
"Probably just a test," Lucas said.
"We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to bring you this important update," an announcer spoke from the television.
"What's going on?" Watson asked.
"Simultaneous attacks are occurring all over the globe by unknown terrorist groups and creatures of unknown origins," the announcer said.
"Attacks?! All over the world?!" Lucas asked.
"I get terrorist groups, but creatures?" Watson said.
"The capital of Rio de Janeiro is one of the cities that is under attack. The creatures are running out of the city to most likely terrorize other areas. All airports have been shut down until further notice. All citizens are to get off of the streets and stay indoors," the announcer said.
"Switch on to the news channel," Lucas said.
Watson grabs the remote and switches the channel to a live news broadcast. The live feed showed a news reporter and people screaming and running in terror in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the background.
"People around me right now are scrambling to find shelter to escape several black beast-like creatures that are currently running through the streets attacking innocent people," the reporter said.
"Creatures?" Watson asked.
"What creatures are they talking about?" Lucas asked.
"The city of Rio de Janeiro isn't the only city that is under this current crisis. Cities around the world are under similar threats of ours and some are attacked by unknown terrorist groups," the reporter said.
"Okay, what the hell is going on?" Watson asked.
Suddenly Watson and Lucas heard the sound of screaming coming from outside. The two boys ran to the front door to check out what was going on. Lucas opened the door and he and Watson peered outside. They saw several people running and screaming in fear down the street. The boys turned to see what they were running from. After a moment out of the corner jumped out a creature that stunned Watson and Lucas in fear and disbelief; a Beowolf.
"Is that... A Grimm?!" Watson asked.
"That's impossible!" Lucas shouted.
Watson looked back at the running crowd and he saw a girl within the crowd tripped and fell to the ground. He then recognized who the girl was. It was Yara. The Beowolf turned and saw Yara on the ground and howled. Realizing what was about to happen, Watson ran out the door and after Yara.
"Watson, wait!" Lucas yelled out, reaching out to him in vain.
Watson ran straight towards Yara just as the Grimm charged for her. He grabs her arm and pulls her up off the ground and runs back towards the house, while pulling on Yara's arm, leading her to the house. Just before the Beowolf could get to them, the two ran inside through the door as Lucas slammed the door shut onto the Grimm's face. Watson, Lucas, and Yara backed away from the door as the sound of banging and scratching was heard from behind the door. The banging and scratching then stopped and there was a long and heavy silence.
"Is it gone?" Yara asked.
Watson slowly stepped towards the door and looked through the peephole on the door. He saw that the Beowolf was gone.
"I think it's gone," Watson said.
"Thanks for saving me," Yara said.
"No problem," Watson said.
"What was that thing?!" Yara asked.
"You probably wouldn't believe us if we told you," Lucas said.
"Right now, it's happening all over the world. Not just here," Watson said.
"All over?" Yara asked.
"Yeah. We were just watching the news," Lucas answered.
"Well I can't go back outside with that thing running around. Do you mind if I stay until its safe?" Yara asked.
"Um... sure thing," Watson asked.
"Thanks. I'll call my parents and let them know that I'm alright," Yara said.
She pulled out her iPhone and walked away into another room. Lucas and Watson turned to each other.
"Dude, Watson, this is your chance to talk to her," Lucas said.
"I don't know, Lucas. What if she doesn't want to talk to me? Besides, she probably thinks I'm crazy when I tell her she was nearly killed by a creature from an animated web show," Watson said.
"Maybe if we watch the news together and then tell her about the show, maybe she will understand you're not crazy. I mean, she got a good look at the Grimm and we saw it too ya know," Lucas said.
"I'll ask her when she's done talking with her parents," Watson said.
"Good," Lucas said.
A moment later, Yara walks back into the living room and approaches the two boys.
"My dad said I can stay here until these attacks come to a stop," Yara said.
"That's fine," Watson said.
"By the way, you implied that you know what that monster that tried to attack me was. Why is that?" Yara asked.
"Why don't you explain what's attacking while I'll keep checking up on the news," Lucas said.
He sat down onto the sofa and began flipping through news channels. Watson turns his attention back to Yara.
"You might want to sit down for this. It may take a while to explain," Watson said.
A few hours later, it was now sunset and Yara was looking into the RWBY fandom website that Watson showed to her and explained about the show.
"So the creature that attacked me is called a Grimm? A creature from a popular fictional web show?" Yara asked.
"Yep, that's so far from some of it," Watson answered.
"This is the craziest thing I've ever heard and yet I saw it in front of me," Yara said.
"And from what Lucas saw on the news, he said that Salem's faction, the White Fang, and a few others are aiding in the attack. But the biggest thing about this whole thing, is that they're freaking real!" Watson said.
"You seem... excited about this," Yara said.
"About RWBY being real, yes. The fact that Salem's attacking us, not so much," Watson said.
"Well, you are a fan so I guess it would make sense for you to say that," Yara said. "By the way, I never got your name."
"Alexander Watson. We go to the same school together. Remember? I'm usually called by my last name," Watson asked.
"Oh yeah! You're that kid that got bullied constantly," Yara said.
"Yeah. Way to bring that up to the outcast," Watson said with an eyeroll.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that," Yara said.
"It's fine. I'm used to stuff like that," Watson said.
Just then, Lucas walks up to Watson and Yara.
"Guys, The attacks stopped and they said that the Grimm had been taken care of," he said.
"Well, I guess it's safe for me to go back home. So I guess I'll see you around," Yara said.
"Yeah. You be careful out there," Watson said.
Yara and Watson walked to the front door. Watson opened the door as Yara walked out. He closed the door as soon as Yara was out. Lucas walks over to his friend.
"So... that's a start," he said.
"Not how I expected it all to go, but yeah," Watson said.
"Well, I'm gonna head home," Lucas asked.
"Alright. See you later then," Watson said as he opened the door.
Lucas walks out the door as Watson then closes the door. Watson sighed and walked over to the sofa and laid back on it and continued to watch the TV.
