Title: Direful Situation

Pairing: Minerva x Sorano

Requester: newgeht

Prompt: direful

Rufus Lore feared for his life.

The two baddest, meanest bitches in the guild (and he meant that affectionately) were glaring down their noses at him, waiting for an answer that he could not give. Not and live to tell the tale.

That was not an exaggeration. Sting had already gone down that route and now Rogue was trying to pull him out of a wall. Rufus wasn't built like a dragon slayer with their stupid levels of resiliency - having that happen to him would kill him instantaneously.

It wasn't even his fault that this was happening. One minute, Minerva and Sorano are talking about potentially taking a job together, and the next they're at each others' throats and the guild was on the verge of becoming the scene of a homicide. ...Not that that hadn't been a regular occurrence with Jiemma in charge, but things had been different under Sting's leadership and no one was keen to return to those times. Minerva included - or so Rufus had assumed before now.

Rufus really did not want to die today. He had a library book on hold waiting for him to pick up - a juicy tome about rare magics that he'd been trying to get his hands on forever. And he didn't want to go out like this, either. Not because of a really stupid argument.

The topic of the disagreement that had begun all of this? Whether or not "direful" was a real word. And they had come to the conclusion that the only intellectual member of the guild was just the person to resolve the issue.

This was too much for Rufus. He glanced sidelong at Yukino, begging with his eyes for her to intercede. Sorano would do anything her little sister asked of her, and Minerva cared for the girl as well. If anyone stood a chance of ending it, it was her.

Yukino looked away from him.

Rufus's stomach sank.

"Well, Rufus?!" Sorano demanded, sensing that he wasn't paying close enough attention to the two threats standing right in front of him. As if he was if were somehow how unaware of the extreme level of danger he was in. "I'm right, aren't I? Tell this..." A sneer curled her lips. "...This woman, that direful is a really word."

"'Really word.'" Her opponent scoffed at the verbal flub. "You see? She can't even string together a coherent sentence. And I've never heard a single person use 'direful' in my entire life."

Sorano clicked her tongue. "Well, we'll soon find out for sure, right? So? Rufus? Care to tell us who's right?"

Unfortunately, Rufus did know the answer to that.

That was the problem.

They were both right. 'Direful' was a real word... but it was archaic. As in... no one really used it anymore. So both of their points were correct.

Not that he could say that. But it wasn't like he could expect to escape unscathed if he didn't reply, and soon.

He was screwed.
