Chapter Six: Attacks

Rhaenyra was reading a book in the library for information, her experiment with the eggs alarmed her.

"My Lady," Maester Luwin's voice made her jump as she looked up from her book, a grinning Baela and chuckling Maester stood watching her as she closed the book with a defeated sigh.

"Thought so," Baela smirked knowingly before coming forward and retrieving the books to take them to her lady's chambers. With the royal party gone Baela was happy to go back to her duties, though Theon said she enjoyed her time off.

"Is something wrong? Have I missed an appointment?" Rhaenyra asked franticly as she stood, smoothing out her dress.

"No, My Lady. But you must sleep, Lord Stark has been searching for you," the Maester commented waiting for the girls to join him. Refusing to allow her lady to carry her books, Baela picked them up to carry, and Michaela, the library's caretaker offered other books like the ones her Lady had been looking at. The older woman knew the girl and her friends were obsessed with Valyria since they were children, Winterfell had quite a few books about the heritage.

"You should have seen Robb, he was up and down the halls looking for you," Baela grinned as the other woman chuckled.

"He is a worrywart," the married woman agreed with a tiny frown on her face.

"He loves you Rhae," Baela whispered as the other woman smiled gently. Changing the subject, she nodded towards the books in her arms. "What were you doing in the library for so long?"

"Nothing, just reading," Rhaenyra deflected as they entered the castle. She didn't want to tell anyone yet, not until she was sure, she did not want to sound like a Targaryen supporter just after she married.

"Are you sure?" Baela asked her friend, knowing she was hiding something.

"Aye," Rhaenyra smiled before asking for her books making the handmaiden frown. "It'll be alright, go rest for the night. I will be needing your help tomorrow," the woman grinned softly as the younger nodded, a small giggle leaving her throat.

"Verry well, go deal with your husband," she ordered pushing the stack into the girl's hands, Maester Luwin who had watched the entire conversation with amusement chuckled before their lady waved them off to bed.

"She is acting different," Maester Luwin mused as they walked together.

"Do you think it means anything?" Baela asked as she walked beside her teacher.

"I am sure it's nothing," the elder paused, frowning. During his sessions with Rhaenyra, he'd noticed her dreams were shorter in the description and she would pause before talking. "It could be just stress or sudden nerves, you know how she can be," the old man smiled as Baela smirked with a chuckle, they paused at the junction of the hallway.

"Of course I do," she grinned as they parted. "Sleep well Maester Luwin," she called and entered her own chambers as he walked to his.

Rhaenyra sighed as she walked to her bed chambers, she was nervous to approach Robb as she had been hiding in the library. Grey Wind was sleeping outside her door when he perked up at seeing her, she smiled and gracefully knelt, stroking the furry ears of the wolf. Shushing him when he whined, she entered as he got up to join her. Her husband sat at his desk and looked up with relief as she closed the door.

"Where were you?" he asked worriedly as she set her books down on the desk. She sat on his lap as he encircled her waist before she pressed a kiss to his lips.

"I was in the library Robb, you act as though I have not seen you all day," she joked when they separated. He sighed before laying his head down against her shoulder.

"I'm sorry," he murmured as she giggled. He smiled at the sound and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "What were you doing in the library?" he asked as she paused, biting her lip before sighing.

"My dreams," she admitted as he frowned with confusion.

"Why what's wrong?" he asked worriedly.

"It was a dragon dream. I was nervous so I wanted to see if I could find anything that would explain but I have nothing so far. I even sent word to Uncle Aemon to see if he knew something," Rhaenyra explained, knowing that she had worded it in a certain way her blood would understand.

"Rhae," Robb began. "Your family has been having dreams since before the Doom, we all know the stories." He frowned as she nodded.

"I know. But that one just made me worried." Rhaenyra shook her head as Robb rubbed her hip. He reclined against his chair and she leaned back into him.

"It could be an omen," Robb suggested.

"It wasn't just the dreams I was looking for, it was also something that happened with the eggs," Rhaenyra admitted before she tried to get up only for Robb to stop her with confusion.

"What happened with the eggs?" he asked sitting up.

"Nothing really...it's just...you remember when I woke up? I had the same dream and I stared at the red egg. I placed it into the fire," she admitted making his eyes widen. "But after a few moments I took it out...with my bare hands," she whispered the last part making him scoff with disbelief.

"What?" he asked. It sounded strange but explained a lot. Her dreams were starting to morph to dragon ones before she just used to dream of another just like her.

"I know," Rhaenyra huffed, finally freeing herself as Robb tried to keep hold of her. "It sounds ridiculous. But it's true." The Targaryen woman didn't blame her husband for not believing her because she would have said they were crazy had she not seen it with her own eyes.

"Rhaenyra," he called, making her stop. He approached her before turning her in his arms but she still refused to look at him. "I do believe you. I believed the dream you told me about, I believed you when we were children just like Jon and Theon. But the egg did not burn you?" he asked with concern as she looked up and showed her unharmed hands.

"Nothing," she smiled. "I was looking for a way to hatch them," she winced as he chuckled in disbelief. "But I would never actually try, especially if I lose one of the eggs." She looked forlornly to the chest carrying her precious items.

"I know," he kissed her forehead. "Come. Let's go to bed," he urged her as she nodded giving a soft smile.

"Will you help me undress My Love?" she asked as he grinned devilishly.

"Of course My Lady," he agreed before she pressed another kiss to his lips.

VI

The next morning, Rhaenyra walked through the courtyard with Baela. They were making sure everything was set right after the King left. Robb was going through his own duties as Catelyn continued to sit with her second youngest, the direwolf sitting with her beside her. Rickon was usually found clinging to the girl's arm or Robb's leg. Shaggydog was tied up as he was unruly despite the teenagers' attempts to teach the boy some manners as with the wolf. "Lady Stark," a guard called as she looked up from talking with the other woman. He approached the women with a note clutched tightly in his hand, it was unbroken as she saw a Targaryen sigil. Her sister. The guard gave her the item before leaving as the girl opened it to read the message.

"Rhae, I am married to the Khal. He is quite large. It hurts when he lays with me and Viserys is getting worse. We are heading for Vaes Dothrak soon, I hope the letters still get sent there too, Dany."

Daenerys was no doubt already heading to her husband's village, she would ask Maester Luwin where Vaes Dothrak was when she sent her letter.

"From your sister?" Baela asked as Rhaenyra nodded before walking away rolling the parchment back up. "So what do you want to do today? Mother and Lynara didn't have much for you to do but review the accounts." But when her Lady winced the girl laughed.

"I'm avoiding those because that is not my best subject." She was never good at numbers, Robb excelled in those things while she could interact with the guests and the people. He knew the castle maintenance while she could work with the people.

"How do you think you get better?" Baela asked as the girl grumbled. "Come along." They journeyed back to the castle and into the married woman's chambers so she could change her dress. Rhaenyra froze, putting out a hand to stop Baela, much to the woman's confusion. "What is it?" she mouthed. Rhaenyra silently signaled for Raynor who came instantly and stayed quiet as he inspected the room before reassuring the lady it was safe and even stayed while the women cautiously checked.

"Someone was in this room I know it," Rhaenyra announced as the guard tensed.

"You are positive My Lady?" he asked.

"Aye," she said firmly, producing an old toy of hers that had been destroyed, it had her house on it. Baela felt sick that someone had broken in and grateful that they weren't in there.

VI

"How in Seven Hells did someone slip in past our guards and into our private chambers?!" Robb demanded as Grey Wind sat around his mistress, licking her hand as she looked at her eggs. Rhaenyra was sitting on her bed as her husband paced with Ser Rodrik who was tense as Raynor also stood there. He was nervous about someone getting through his guards, the ones who protected and watched out for Rhaenyra.

"We'll search everywhere My Lord," Rodrik swore as Robb nodded while Rhaenyra put her eggs away with Baela watching her. "Whoever it was must not have gotten far," he said as Raynor agreed.

"Go on, I'll tighten the guard," said the guard. He walked out Robb knelt in front of his wife and gained her attention.

"Rhae," he urged making her swallow as Grey Wind nudged her. He whined in worry as she sighed softly.

"I'm sorry Robb, I am just tired and realizing someone broke into our chambers makes me nervous, I'm grateful they did not see the chest of eggs." Lynara had placed them underneath the bed amongst the other boxes, hidden among the wood of the frame.

"Otherwise they would have been taken," Robbmurmered, his hand resting on their chest.

"Or the queen would know and she'd find some way to claim it treason," Rhaenyra countered as he nodded.

"It's alright. They didn't find them, nor will they have a second chance," Robb swore as he held his wife's hand. Grey Wind whined again and laid his head against her shoulder, pressing a kiss to the wolf's forehead she laid her forehead to Robb's. "The Lannisters will not do this again," Robb promised as she looked at him. His Tully blue eyes piercing her violet ones. "The North is ours, we know it better. Southerners don't last long here, very few adapt to it," he joked as she chuckled. He meant Valaena who was raised in King's Landing, a true southerner who had become a northerner. She prayed to the Old Gods more than the New now.

"If they failed once, they will be less likely to do it again." Rhaenyra knew many were skittish after a failed attempt, so they would regroup and try again when the target's awareness was down, thinking the assassin left. But Rhaenyra knew better, if someone was trying to kill her they would keep attempting to until she or they were dead.

"You seem quite relaxed by this?" Robb asked with surprise.

"I know who did this, who else has always hated my survival?" she questioned as he frowned. They all knew the Lannisters disliked the fact that Rhaenyra remained alive, which would always threaten Robert's children.

"I promise you that they will never get another chance," he promised as she smiled while taking his hand.

VI

The next day Rhaenyra decided to stay in the library with the eggs as a guard stayed near the outside, she was reading a few books before the guard called to her. "A message, My Lady," he spoke quietly as he received a praising look from the elder librarian. She liked it when people respected the building and quiet.

"Thank you," she whispered back. Taking the parchment she unrolled it to see it was from her Uncle Aemon answering her letter. Her eyes widened on reading the note before freezing when she heard screams from the horses. Carefully she put the note down in the book she had been reading before retrieving her egg-filled bag, she had a bad feeling and wanted to go check on Gael. Maybe she might go into the Godswood to pray with the eggs, which might put her at ease. "Michaela, can you hold these books please?" Rhaenyra asked as the woman nodded with a bright smile.

"Of course My Lady," she agreed as she left, clutching her bag.

"Are there any other things to do My Lady?" the guard asked as he joined her.

"No, you may go and break your fast. I was actually going to try and see if Robb will break away for a few moments," she admitted making him chuckle.

"Alright," he left before walking away as Rhaenyra smiled before going into the castle. She made sure her stones didn't smack against the other to make sound, she thought they'd be heavy but they were easy to bring around. Rhaenyra had a knife hidden in her sleeve just in case, but as she looked around she assumed he was in his office as his mother was still with Bran. Rickon was with Valeana and Maester Luwin, Valaena was their best offer for the sullen child who was so close to his mother. She allowed her fingers to drift over the scales as she entered the office to see Robb pouring over files and papers across the desk.

"Think I can steal you away for a few minutes?" she grinned as he looked up. A smile slid across his face when he saw his wife who smiled and leaned against the frame.

"I think you can, what are you doing?" he asked curiously while Rhaenyra smirked.

"I was bored and my things are done for the day. I was going to go pray in the Godswood. I wondered if you wanted to join me?" Rhaenyra wanted to help her husband relax and with the recent break-in, he worried about her safety.

"Of course," he smiled as she grinned. "Let me finish these and I will join you in the stables," Robb decided as she nodded and came to her husband before pressing a kiss to his lips.

"I will have Karn saddled," she agreed. He grinned and watched her leave and noticed her pack.

Giggles left the girl as she guided Gael as Robb and Karn trotted along. He'd chuckle as their stories made them laugh, they were talking about Jon and Theon taking forever to become friends. Grey Wind ran ahead as they laughed, Robb noticed the pack on the side of Gael's saddle.

"Don't ask," Rhaenyra spoke suddenly surprising him, he hadn't realized he was caught. "I just..." she paused, gently patting the mare's neck as she huffed. "I wanted to bring them, for no reason," she realized as he laughed.

"That's fine Rhae. You wanted them out," he smiled as she hummed softly until they came across the Weirwood tree. She didn't understand why Robb was being so open and easy about her carrying her dragon eggs around. Only a few knew she was; Robb, Raynor, Maester Luwin, Baela, and Valaena. Robb and Baela just shrugged it off, not finding a problem with that, but Maester Luwin and Valaena thought it dangerous if someone were to try and rob her. But with a guard always with her, it wasn't going to be easy to try that, Rhaenyra could protect herself with a dagger. Robb knew his ease was driving his wife crazy and liked that as he could mess with her mind usually. He knew the eggs brought her comfort just like Baela knew, hell she admitted to him when Rhaenyra was helping with Rickon.

"You drive me crazy," she growled, urging her horse on as he followed with a laugh. They were closer now and Grey Wind was laying down panting happily, Robb was off and helping an irritated Rhaenyra down. "I can get down on my own, you know?" she asked raising one brow as he smirked.

"I know. But I'm still your husband so I can help you all I like," he snuck a quick kiss before darting around Gael's head as the mare shook her head. Rhaenyra pursed her lips as she hissed softly before starting to undo the blanket they could sit on while he grabbed his pack and then hers before realizing it was the egg pack as it weighed his arm down a bit, "You carry these like they weigh nothing!" he protested as she giggled.

"Of course they are heavy, Robb. They're stone eggs!" she exclaimed as she lifted the bag a little easier. "I've weighed these eggs all my life, I guess I just got used to it," she smirked as he smiled back.

"I remember, you usually had the chest closed but the few times we remember seeing it open they were always greyish," Robb commented as they sat on the blanket when she pulled the eggs out, Robb had long noticed they were darker in color. It was true, as a precaution she always had the eggs closed up, but the few times the boys were playing games with her, Baela and Valaena in her chambers the chest was open it always drew their attention. Theon even once asked if they could look at them, Valaena had retrieved them so the boys could look. The two girls had always sat in Rhaenyra's chambers to stare at the eggs of their history, Robb once picked the blue-silver egg up and claimed it was cold and rock hard. But Rhaenyra thought that was confusing as she didn't feel that with them.

"I know, even your father commented on their shade when he saw them," Rhaenyra smirked as he gently rolled the blue one. "That's the one that was the color of the dragon in my dream," she admitted staring at the egg her husband was feeling.

He looked up to see her softly running her fingers over the other two eggs, gently he removed the eggs from the blanket and into their bag before bringing her in to kiss her softly. Rhaenyra smiled softly and kissed him back, he slowly brought her closer as she gave a silent prayer to their gods.

Rhaenyra smiled softly as she continued to walk through Winterfell, she couldn't help it. She just kept smiling and it was driving her crazy when she tried to think why.

"Someone looks like they're in love," a voice sang as she looked to see Ros smirking as she was shopping about.

"Hello Ros, how are the girls?" Rhaenyra asked as the woman shrugged.

"Well enough. But like I said, your a grinning fool," the whore smirked as her lady grinned softly.

"Maybe I am," she fought back when Ros chuckled before frowning gently as she stared at her white-haired lady. "What? What is it?" Rhaenyra asked frowning herself as the woman gently came closer. The woman smiled softly before shaking her head.

"I'm sure it's nothing," Ros claimed as the Targaryen woman kept her frown. "I must be on my way, My Lady," she quickly left with her purchases.

"My Lady," a voice made her turn to see Maester Luwin coming to her.

"Yes Maester Luwin?" she asked as he stopped.

"Is everything alright?" he asked as she frowned once more.

"Why is everyone asking me that?" Rhaenyra asked, truly irritated at the same question.

"Come with me child," he urged as she followed. The walk to the Maester's chambers was silent as she continued to think about everything.

"Maester Luwin what is going on?" Rhaenyra asked curiously as they entered his chambers when he opened them. Carefully sitting the bag down she sat where he pointed.

"You have been running around quite a bit. And during our sessions you don't talk as much," he frowned as she looked to him.

"It's nothing really," she smiled making him shake his head.

"Answer the question," he demanded, losing all formalities for the health of a girl he helped raise. Rhaenyra lifted her head to look at him, tears starting to brim her eyes.

"I feel I'm going crazy with my dreams. Uh, a week ago I dreamed of Essos again, a girl like me surrounded by horses and when Bran fell that night I dreamed of a blue dragon destroying Winterfell," Rhaenyra frowned.

"But there has never been an attack on Winterfell by dragons and there will never be," he frowned as she looked down at her pack.

"I know," she nodded.

"Have you been feeling well lately?" he asked as Rhaenyra shrugged. "Baela has informed me that she has not come to receive your moon clothes, My Lady," Maester Luwin personally handled Rhaenyra's health because someone had tried to poison her when she was young and had flowered. Many rejoiced because Robb and Rhaenyra would marry but a few didn't like it. When Rhaenyra had started and Valaena had been retrieving the cloth she kept in her chambers she remembered it had an odor coming from it. Maester Luwin claimed it was some poison that would've gotten through her system to kill her, so Ned ordered for things dealing with that were to be handled by Maester Luwin and her handmaidens, the elder happily agreed to it all.

When he told Rhaenyra that she frowned and lifted her head, she tried to think of her internal days before realizing she must've missed the day or not realized.

"Do you think?" she asked confused.

"Maybe. Maybe your dreams are trying to settle like your body. We will just see," he murmured before she frowned, looking away. She hadn't even given it a thought lately, not knowing why as she had not been doing anything.

After leaving Maester Luwin, Rhaenyra walked through the castle as she read the letter she was going to send to Daenerys.

"Dany. Robb and I are still adjusting to becoming Lord and Lady Stark. Bran's back is not broken, thank the gods, he should awaken soon, says Maester Luwin. I hope you and Khal Drogo become closer. I hear Vaes Dothrak is large, it is able to care for all the khalasars, which I find very interesting. I hope you are well, Love Rhae."

She made her way up to the tower and greeted the raven keepers before asking for one to fly to Essos. A child took a bird carefully and offered it to her as she attached the note. The boy released the bird as it took off. Thanking the child she returned to her duties before Rickon latched onto her.

"Come, Nēdenka Jaosītsos. We will find your mother," Rhaenyra urged as Robb came into view.

"Take him to Baela, she will care for him for now," he ordered as Rhaenyra shrugged and guided the boy to her friend. Baela must have known as she picked the boy up and carried him off to bed with the promise of a story. "We are going to talk to Mother, she has sat at Bran's side for weeks." He frowned.

"She is fearful that he will die, Robb. If it was me, I would do the same, only after destroying whatever has caused his fall," she defended as he smiled, gently taking her hand as they walked up to Bran's chambers. But as they came closer they could hear Catelyn's raised voice. As Robb entered first they heard the problem. Maester Luwin had extended his patience with his lady and now required aid in preparing them all for winter. Valaena was sitting on the opposite side of Catelyn, working on her stitching as she did her best to ignore the rising tempers of her lady and the ever-patient maester who was trying to pull Catelyn from Bran's side just a little so she could rest.

"We'll make the appointments," Robb spoke up as Rhaenyra agreed, walking to stand behind Valaena who smiled to her lady softly, continuing with her stitch. The teenager ran a hand through Bran's hair, noticing his pale complexion that she always carried. His though was from the lack of sun, her own came from her family.

"I already have some names we could consider for the vacant offices," Maester Luwin explained, retrieving a piece of parchment from his sleeve. Rhaenyra smirked, the elder always had papers, toys, and other objects in his sleeves that he could pull like a wizard.

"Very well. We'll talk about it first thing tomorrow," Robb decided as Rhaenyra nodded when he looked to her. "Leave us," the heir requested as Maester Luwin and Valaena nodded, the maid stood and curtsied to everyone while Maester Luwin held the door for her, both walked side-by-side as they talked. The maester was telling her what needed to be done tomorrow, Robb made sure the door was shut behind them as Rhaenyra opened the window, hearing the howls from the direwolves below. Everyone knew it made Bran better, his mother refused to accept that part of him. "When was the last time you left this room?" Robb questioned quickly after he ensured they left.

"Mother, what are you doing?" Robb asked sharply as Rhaenyra looked to him alarmed.

"What am I doing?" Catelyn seemed to agree with her good-daughter as she echoed her son's question. "I am taking care of Bran! He needs me," she cried out as Rhaenyra decided to help. Understanding both sides.

"Maester Luwin says the greatest danger has passed, Mother. He is not going to die," Robb reassured her, his voice much softer now as he saw the devastation in his mother's eyes.

"What if he is wrong? What if Bran slips away and I am not here for him?" Catelyn asked. "Don't you understand? He needs me."

"Rickon needs you as well, My Lady," Rhaenyra said, trying to help.

"He's four," Robb interrupted. "He does not understand what is going on and clutches our hands and legs, crying. Mother, what are we to do with him? We cannot just pass him off to a servant to care for and even Maester Luwin is too busy to watch over him." Robb was becoming agitated, he'd done his best to give his mother time and help where he could but she was acting as though the boy would die. No matter how many times the maester would say he will not die, she refused to listen. "We need you as well, Mother," Robb pleaded as Rhaenyra looked down. She and Robb became lord and lady too soon and now were getting behind, try as Lynara might, she was not good at the accounts either. Suddenly, a howl made them pause as Robb recognized it instantly.

"Is that Bran's?" Rhaenyra asked she was still learning the different pitches to each wolf.

"Aye," Robb answered, opening the window wider.

"Close the window! I can't stand them, make them stop," she cried out over the howls of the hounds. Rhaenyra who was closer turned to do so before pausing with a wide-eyed look.

"Rhae?" Robb asked worriedly as he raced around. "Fire," he announced making the redhead looked up alarmed. "You stay here, we'll be back," Robb ordered as he and Rhaenyra ran out. Both had gone to the courtyard.

"What happened?" Rhaenyra asked as a guard passed by. Raynor had run off to retrieve more men and others willing to help.

"Wagon of hay caught fire," he panted making them tense, the horses screaming from the stable the building right next door. She ran inside as Robb yelled to other men, she noticed smoke slowly seeping close to the stable.

"Shh, shh," she soothed some of the animals who calmed at seeing a familiar face. Rhaenyra didn't mind coming to see the animals and mostly bonded with hers but they knew her too. Gael stuck her head out and tugged on her owner's top, Rhaenyra scratched her forehead to try and calm her, so far everything was good, no fire so the horses were safe.

Rhaenyra jumped when she whirled around when she had stroked her husband's horse. A woman stood there with a glare, a knife in her hand, the lady's hand drifted to her eggs in the bag she carried them in. "You made it easy to come alone," she sneered as the Stark woman backed away, while the other woman she advanced.

"You're the one who set fire to the cart?" Rhaenyra asked sharply.

"We needed a distraction," she smiled before surging forward as the white-haired woman leaped backward, knocking over a torch into the hay, the rising smoke startled the horses who squealed in fear. Rhaenyra quickly undid the hinges and set them free, as a result, the woman was knocked out when a horse barrelled into her in an attempt to get out, her and Robb's were freed quickly before the woman coiled into herself when the roof caved in as screams of frightened horses filled the smokey air.

Robb who had helped put the fire out looked around as the people started to scream when more smoke filled the air. "The stables!" a guard screamed as people saw the horses running out. Gael and Karn were the first two out. But Robb was realizing something. His wife was missing!

"Where's Lady Stark?" he bellowed as others became worried. Valaena and Raynor had joined him and overheard the question and gasped when human screams erupted from the stables where the fire started spreading from the hay.

Rhaenyra carefully looked around as she saw the fire cover the dead horses, the remains of the assassin laid there, nothing but burnt flesh and ash like the remaining horses. She had quickly shed her dress as it caught fire. The only thing remaining was her mother's necklace and ring. But suddenly she heard a noise it sounded like a snap as she turned. A gasp left her throat as she saw her bag that was now ash, there amongst it were her eggs. Now shattered as three little bodies emerged from them, eating the burned flesh from a horse. Their shrieks were loud and sharp. The three turned to her and shrieked once more, coming to her instantly as the cracking of wood caught her attention. Looking up she saw the roof starting to cave in. Quickly she leapt forward and protected them from the fire and debris coming down as their cries echoed over her own.

Robb and Theon watched in horror as the building was engulfed as men have been trying to use water but could not when it spread. "Back up!" Raynor called out, dread filling him as he watched the fire blaze. He failed his mission in protecting his lady. He watched as Robb cried softly as Grey Wind howled with the citizens gathering.

"Remember boy, fire cannot kill a dragon," Valaena spoke softly. Many did not understand before looking to the fire once more.
