A/N:

Hey guys, thanks for being so patient! Sorry about the formatting of the last chapter! Thanks to those who politely pointed it out to me! I've had this idea in my head for a while so I'm glad so many people are keen to read it. I've got a lot of it written but I'm still filling in gaps/making sure it makes sense! I'll try to post a chapter a week after this one. I've proofread them a bunch of times but there could still be errors! Sorry there isn't any Calzona action in this chapter, it is coming I promise!

Anyway, enjoy!

Chapter 2:

Looking around the room, Sofia was trying to find an empty seat next to someone before the teacher assigned her a buddy. It was honestly the worst part about starting at a new school, the kid who was forced to be your friend until you could make your own. In some cases, Sofia hadn't stayed long enough to make her own and she would have preferred to just be left to herself. Before she could move, she saw a girl waving, pointing to the empty seat next to her. Smiling, Sofia made her way through the desks to sit in the empty seat.

"Hey," the girl whispered, "I'm Naomi. I was the new girl before you. Thought I'd save you from the terrible buddy they assigned me."

"Thanks," Sofia whispered back as she got out her books. "I'm."

"Okay everyone, this is our new student Sofia Sloan," the teacher announced before she could introduce herself, "please make her feel welcome and don't tell her to eat the potato salad from the cafeteria, we all know it's bad and that's just mean."

"Nice to meet you Sofia," Naomi smiled back to her, "and she's not kidding about the potato salad, it's the worst thing you'll ever eat." Sofia laughed as the teacher proceeded with her lesson.

"Here, give me your timetable, I want to see what classes we have together," Naomi said as she grabbed Sofia's timetable out of hands. "Dude, we have pretty much all the same classes. Everything except AP chemistry, I didn't get into AP. How did you get into Robbins' biomed class? I thought it was full! People were begging to be let in when the class list came out."

Sofia shrugged, "I don't know, she didn't say anything. I didn't realise it was so sought out."

"Uh yeh. Robbins is like the best pediatric surgeon on the east coast, possibly the whole country. Like, when she took this job everyone was amazed she gave up her career. Like, she was on her way to winning a Harper Avery and every other medical award in the world. Did you actually meet her?"

"She did my admissions interview. Said she was impressed with my file and was excited to have me here," Sofia shrugged. "Is that a big deal?"

"I don't think she has done a single admissions interview since she got here 8 years ago. I mean, I met with the deputy and even then, that was only because my dad called up and requested it," Naomi scoffed.

"Can we stop talking about this please. I'm hungry," Sofia begged as they walked into the cafeteria.

"Sure, whatever but like don't mention Robbins to my friends, they won't stop questioning you on it. Especially Harry, he's got the biggest crush on her. Something about the blonde hair and blue eyes thing," Naomi laughed as they joined her friends who were already sitting at a table.

"Guys, this is Sofia, it's her first day so be nice. Sofia this is Harry, Bristol, Trav, Danny, Abbi and Georgia. They are assholes but they can sometimes be funny."

"Hey," the group exclaimed as someone threw a french fry at Naomi.

"Am I wrong," Naomi laughed as she sat down. "Sofia is in bio med, AP bio, AP English and and AP Physics with us."

Sofia stopped mid bite when she saw everyone staring at her. She knew it was because she had gotten in bio med at such late notice. "Before you ask, I don't know," Sofia shrugged, "no one said it was full when I put it on my form."

"You must be some kind of genius then," Bristol chimed in. "Robbins would have only made an exception if you were a genius."

"I'm kind of a genius,' Sofia smiled, "at least that's what my last IQ test said. My mum makes me take them every 6 months to track my improvement."

"I'm kidding," Sofia said when she realised everyone was staring at her once again. "One of my schools made us do an IQ test to see what we'll be when we grew up and I aced it but I was 8 and everyone at that school was dumb. I was there for like 3 months."

"Why did you move," Harry asked, mouth full of food.

"My mama got a new job at a different hospital. She's an orthopedic surgeon. We move a lot because of it."

"And your dad," Trav asked.

Sofia just smiled and shrugged as she continued eating. "I should be here until college though."

"Guys, leave her alone and do 20 questions some other time. You know, like when she actually likes us and isn't repulsed by the boys eating habits," Abbi joked.

Sofia smiled as she watched her new friends interact with each other. She'd made some friends at her other schools but she had never felt so calm before. These new people made her feel safe, content and happy. Happy. She hadn't felt that in a while. Happy never seemed to hang around too long in their life. Shaking her thoughts out of her head, she laughed as she caught the end of a terrible joke being told by Trav.

"I'm soooo sorry Sof. I got caught up in a meeting and then hospital gossip and I didnt see the time," Callie said as she raced into the house dumping her things on the kitchen bench. "There's this one old guy and I thought he was going to take his last breath talking to me," Callie joked as she joined her daughter by the stove.

"You're only like 30 minutes late, that's pretty good by Callie Torres standards," Sofia smiled as her mum kissed her on the cheek.

"Enough about me, how was your first day? Did you make any friends? Any cute boys or girls I need to know about?"

"First day was great. Had some tough classes so I'm hoping I can catch up and keep my GPA high. I made a whole group of friends today and I think they really like me. Heaps of cute boys and girls but none that I can explicitly point out as an area of interest."

"Boo," Callie hissed at her daughter, "but yay for friends! I don't think you've made many, if any friends at what? The last three schools?"

"I knew we weren't going to hang around long enough for me to get attached. I got two years at this one, I'm going to need friends," Sofia shrugged.

"Yeah yeah, play it cool. I can see you actually like this school. You smiled, you never do that at new places. I'm glad you're happy. It's okay to be happy here, I really like it too."

"Okay so how long are we actually going to stay here though? I don't want to get attached and be happy for you to turn around and move us again. I'm not saying I've hated the moving, but some of the places we lived, sucked. I don't want to move again and you promised," Sofia ranted, avoiding looking at her mother.

"I told you, I signed a three-year contract at the hospital and what I didn't tell you was I actually bought this house so we aren't going anywhere any time soon. I promise," Callie smiled at her daughter.

Sofia smiled back at Callie. Three years would be the longest they had ever lived in one place since Seattle. Maybe after everything that had happened, they would finally get their happy ever after. Sofia was overcome with a warm feeling in the pit of her stomach. Maybe this is what home finally felt like.
