With the bunkmates getting along again, the camp resumes its regular calm. Just coming off Post Op duty from the night shift, Charles heads toward Margaret's tent to get her advice on a patient matter. Rounding a corner, Charles is glad he has a spot to hide when he notices the Head Nurse's tent door open, hears laughing, then shut. Smirking to himself, Charles is not too surprised to find the woman has a lover at camp but is curious who it is.
"Probably Pierce," He jokes to himself with a small laugh. Pierce is the last person she would ever choose if watching their sparring matches is any indication. However, the surgeon is shocked a moment later to find that very doctor almost stumble his way out of the tent. Smirking, Charles lets the pair get away with their little secret before leaving his spot to officially ask Margaret his question. From that moment, Charles makes it a mission to see if he can find the pair alone together again. The surgeon even goes so far as to eavesdrop on conversations. Lucky for Charles no one pays attention to his random smirks or glances at the couple. At least, he thinks no one is watching him. B.J. having been trying to figure out who Hawkeye is married to asks his French horn playing bunkmate, "Charles, have you noticed Hawkeye and Margaret's relationship is changing?"
Nearly choking on his cognac, Charles splutters, "Have you?"
B.J. smirks before telling Charles what Hawkeye tells him a couple months ago. From then on, the men trade notes as if they are school girls.
Surgeries and lulls follow the next few weeks until two fellow soldiers in the Greek and Turkish units spoil the fun of the 4077th. Rosie ends up being attacked hurting her ribs and is forced to stay at the camp until she is better. Knowing how much her livelihood means to her, Margaret volunteers they take over the bar. Potter agrees due to lack of casualties and Hawkeye, B.J., and Margaret get their instructions from Rosie who tells them to water the drinks down, take thirty percent of the waitresses' tips, and finally to be good to Muldoon the Military Police in order to keep her business going.
Taking over for Rosie is not as easy as Hawkeye imagines and is secretly relieved when Margaret takes over their first shift. Her no nonsense attitude could rival Rosie's.
"You know you're kind of sexy when you take charge," Hawkeye whispers in her ear one night as they work their shifts at the bar. Smiling involuntarily, Margaret mumbles something to him about being quiet before continuing her work. Glancing over at the pair, B.J. shakes his head wondering once again if there is more to their relationship than they let on.
"You and Margaret are getting a little cozy there at the bar," B.J. teases when he and Hawkeye are back in their tent after a round at Rosie's.
The next afternoon Hawkeye is stuck in another fight between the Turkish and Greek soldiers. Walking off the situation once Mulcahey calms them down, Hawkeye sees Margaret coming toward him asking about the commotion.
"Our friendly resident soldiers got in a fight. Between the bar and these men I can't wait for Rosie to get better," He tells her.
Luckily for them, Rosie heals sooner rather than later and to celebrate they all have a drink in her honor as she stands behind her bar yet again. Then, the group tells Father Mulcahey the other and main reason they are there. Presented with his Captains bars, Father Mulcahey is extremely grateful after being told he was unable to get them. Thankfully between Colonel Potter and Klinger, the priest is allowed his promotion. Drinking to celebrate, the group stumble their way home a couple hours and an angry Muldoon later, B.J. watches as Hawkeye flirts with Margaret and makes sure to tell Charles about it later.
Neither Margaret nor Hawkeye are aware of the looks Charles and B.J. give each other whenever the couple is even sitting near each other. The latter is a good thing for B.J. and Charles as they try to understand their friends' actual relationship.
"Do you think they're actually married?" B.J. asks one day while Hawkeye is on Post Op duty one night. Barking out a laugh, Charles announces, "Don't be preposterous. Dating, my dear boy, yes, but not married. When would they have found the time?"
B.J. nods having to agree with him, but Hawkeye's comment about having his wife in camp still sticks with the doctor. Simply deciding to keep the idea to himself, B.J. soon changes the subject.
By the middle of Summer, the camp is eager to find a way to cool off and Hawkeye and B.J. find out the perfect way when they buy a bathtub. Keeping it a secret, the men are excited to enjoy the cool water until Radar needs to prepare for a tonsillectomy and then somehow the whole camp finds out about it. Only getting to enjoy it once each before the camp goes mad, the men end up setting up a bath schedule for everyone in the camp. Klinger, however, is adamant he will not get in still trying to leave the army. This time by wearing as many layers as he can and hope he does not die of heatstroke. For Hawkeye, the lack of a cold bath is nothing compared to his wife's not speaking to him because he did not tell her about the bath first. A week later, Hawkeye and B.J. end up swearing off showering when Charles's horn playing drives them to strike. Not feeling too bad about being relegated to sitting away from the other members of the camp save B.J. because Margaret is still not talking to him, Hawkeye is surprised when B.J. asks him why Margaret stops talking to them.
"Well, apparently Beej, we reek."
"No, before that," B.J. says between a mouthful of food.
"Ah," Hawkeye begins before spearing a bite of his dinner and explaining, "She thought since she was a major, that we shouldn't have held out telling her about the bathtub."
Surprised at how easily he plays off his marital issues, Hawkeye silently congratulates himself as B.J. merely nods. Somehow Hawkeye will confress his wife is Margaret, B.J. is just not sure how. In the meantime the men keep up their strike and make it almost until the end of the day when the nurses with most of the camp backing them decide the men finally need a shower. As they are bombarded with the first onslaught of water, the men try to resist but are quickly overpowered as soap is poured on them.
"You like this, don't you Margaret?" Hawkeye teases as his wife covers him with the soap and takes a sponge to his face while Klinger continues to spray water on the two men. With the other nurses ganging up on B.J., Margaret mumbles to her husband an apology for giving him the silent treatment adding, "I think the heat got to me. Now take off your shirt."
Eyes wide, Hawkeye is surprised at his wife's boldness. Rolling her eyes, Margaret remarks, "You know what I mean."
Before anymore can be said, Colonel Potter announces drinks in the Officer's Club that will be put on Hawkeye and B.J.'s tabs.
Sipping his drink, which surprisingly is not Congac, Charles makes his way toward B.J. who sits watching various campers dance and asks if the newly clean surgeon learns anything new about Hawkeye and Margaret. Shaking his head, B.J. replies, "He won't talk. Did you learn anything from Margaret?"
With a sigh, Charles answers, "No, but would you look at them?"
B.J. looks over to where Hawkeye is and notices he is dancing with Margaret and they are laughing. Hopefully his friend will let something definitive slip soon. He is getting tired of guessing games.
