"Hello."Kara greeted the caller as she juggled the two cups of coffee and a box of donuts she just purchased in her hands while trying to hold her phone.She was meeting Lena at her office and wanted to bring Lena something. SuperGirl had never done so before but Lena usually offered Kara refreshments so it was only fair for SuperGirl to return the favor.They didn't have a set time for their meeting that morning and Kara wanted to get there early so she could spend as much time with Lena as she could.When she heard the voice of the caller she held back a sigh.
"Where are you?"Alex's voice asked on the other end of the line.
"I'm getting something to eat."Kara wasn't exactly lying but knew that Alex wouldn't approve of her plans to meet up with Lena. Especially as SuperGirl.
"Well I'm at your apartment come home."Alex said.
"I wanted to run some errands while I was out."Kara held out little hope that Alex would just leave her alone.
"Fine where are you, I'll meet up with you and I can come along.I have a few things I needed to get done as well."Alex replied.
"That's ok.I wanted to have some personal time."Kara told her.
"Why do you want personal time?"This time Alex's voice sounded suspicious.
"Maybe because I don't usually get any."Kara didn't mean to sound so spiteful but it was hard."Listen I have to go.I'll talk to you later."
"No you tell right this second where you are?"There was a pause before Alex spoke again."And why is your tracker claiming you are in your apartment where I know you are not?"
Kara rolled her eyes."Maybe because I don't like the fact that people know where I am every second of the day."
"You know it's for your own safety.Now tell me were you are right now!"Alex demanded.
"Not doing it.I'll talk to you later."Ignoring Alex's objections Kara disconnected the call,then pulled the SIM card out of her phone snapped it in half, crushed the phone into small pieces and threw both in a random garbage.She would ask Lena if she could help her out with a secure phone.One that the DEO couldn't install any software on or couldn't hack.
Making her way into a side alley Kara made sure there were no cameras and quickly discarded her civilian clothes and stashed them by a dumpster.She wouldn't be coming back for them so she hoped someone who needed them would find them.Adjusting her suit she made sure the coffee and donuts were secure before she took off into the sky flying slower than usual so she didn't spill anything.As she came close enough to Luthor Corp and spotted Lena in her office Kara instantly felt better.
"Hello SuperGirl."Lena said not looking up from her paper work when the superhero landed on her balcony.
"How did you know I was there?" Kara always wondered how whenever she visited Lena always knew no matter how fast she came in.
"I have an extensive security system set up that tracks the air space around not only this building by my apartment building as well."Lena told her.
"Huh."Kara didn't know why she hadn't thought about that.It was just common sense for Lena to have that kind of security.She set the coffee and donuts next to Lena."I come barring gifts."
"Ludos, my favorite."Lena picked up the coffee and took a sip."You even got my order right."
Kara smiled shyly."I have seen you drink coffee enough times to know how you take it by now."
"Well thank you."Lena stood from her office chair."Why don't we take our drinks and treats with us to my private lab."
"You are letting me into your private lab?"Kara was surprised to hear that.She knew that Lena had never let another human being down there.She even set the place up herself so to give SuperGirl access was a huge show of trust.
"Why are you going to steal anything?"Lena teased.
"Of course not!"Kara quickly denied.Noticing Lena's smirk Kara rolled her eyes."Very funny but seriously why are you letting me into your lab?"
"You and I are a lot alike.Both of us have to live in the shadow of other people's reputations.I know that I don't personally like the fact that no matter what I do I will always be held in the same regard as Lex.Maybe I'm wrong but I think you understand what it's like to not be able to be your own person no matter how hard you try and because of that you have my trust."Lena said.
Kara was stunned,stopping for a second as Lena's words rang true.She did live in SuperMan's shadow.It was because of him that Alex and her adopted parents made the choice for her to be a superhero when Kara wanted nothing to do with fighting anyone.If she had her way she would spend her time trying to help with helping humans live longer on earth.Her own planet had been destroyed and Kara felt if the humans didn't do something soon their's would be as well.Of course she would have helped out some times but Kara didn't feel like she had an obligation to save humanity like those around her felt she did.She personally felt that humans should spend more time learning to defend themselves than relying on someone who wasn't even born on the planet. One that more people than not hated.
"Let's take my elevator."Lena didn't expect a reply from Kara but was hopeful Kara would reflect on her words.
"Yes, let's go."Kara said absentmindedly as she was thinking things through.Her thoughts were stuck on the fact that Lena didn't know who she was in everyday life.Making a decision Kara decided that she would tell Lena once they were securely in her lab. She knew Lena didn't trust her office so the lab would be secure enough.
Lena laid her hand on a hand scanner, then scanned her eye on a retinal scanner and when prompted for voice verification she spoke."SuperMan is a douche."
"That's your password!"When Lena nodded Kara laughed.
"I don't particular like your cousin.I don't want to kill him mind you."Lena quickly added."But I don't appreciate him arresting me as many times as he has for absolutely no reason.The man is drunk on power and I fear for my safety if he gets it in his head I am a serious threat."
Kara wanted to defend her cousin but she couldn't when she had the same concerns. Clark skirted the law many times over to prove he was right even if he wasn't. With no one to actually keep him in check she to feared for Lena."Well if I had to pick a password I think I would pick that one as well."
"Come on."Once the elevator doors opened Lena went through the same security protocol except her voice verification password was different."Long live the Evil Queen."
"The Evil Queen?"Kara asked receiving a shrug from Lena in reply. Following her off the elevator Kara stopped suddenly as she looked around.Lena's lab put the DEO's to shame.They were in what Kara figured was the main room that held a containment room with clear walls, computer modules lining one wall, and various projects and tools Kara had no idea what they were used for.What was of interest was there were closed doors that when Kara used her X-ray vision found were made of lead.
Noticing her glances at the doors Lena explained."I apologize for the walls but it's for safety reasons. If your cousin ever got into the lab I would rather he not know what I was working on."
"Ahh."Kara understood.Clark would have no problem stealing Lena's designs to patent for himself to make money.He had done it before with Alex and Winn's help.The device had made them a fortune each of them multimillionaires once all was said and done."I hope you have top of the line security so he can't get in."
"I can guarantee he would never be able to get into any of those rooms."Lena wasn't going to tell Kara that the rooms had been secured with magic that would attack whoever broke in rendering them unconscious.It didn't matter if they were human or alien they weren't getting into any of those rooms.Noticing Kara's interest Lena surprised herself by offering."If you are truly curious I wouldn't mind showing you what's in there.
"That's alright.I don't want to give anything away if I'm ever compromised."Kara didn't trust to not have something happen that would have her spilling secrets.
"Actually that's one of the reasons I brought you down here."Lena made her way over to a work table and picked up a metal ring and handed it to Kara.
"What is this?"Kara admired the beautiful metal ring.It was made of some type of metal that Kara couldn't identify and was covered in diamonds, sapphires and rubies.Looking at it closely Kara realized that the design of the jewels and the metal work depicted the solar system around Krypton.
"Here let me."Lena took the ring back and pushed on one of the diamonds and the ring clicked open.Lifting Kara's arm she attached the ring around Kara's forearm."Don't freak out but push right there."
Kara pushed where Lena showed her and was surprised when she was suddenly covered in a suit that covered her entire body including a helmet."What the hell."
"Hello SuperGirl would you like to set up your suit."A female voice asked.
"Who said that?"Kara looked around but only saw Lena standing before her.
"I'm sorry I should have explained it first."Lena had wanted to surprise Kara not thinking that it of course would freak her out."I made this for you so that you would be better protected."
"You made me a suit?"Despite Kara's surprise she was touched that Lena cared about her safety.
"I did.Would you like me to run through some of the features?"Lena asked.
"Can you start with the random voice speaking to me."Kara wanted to know how to turn the volume down.
"That is the AI computer that is linked to your suit.You can name her what ever you wish. Her purpose is to not only train you on each system option but will also help with the suit weapons systems,alerts,shields,things like that."Lena explained.
"Weapons?"Kara didn't know where any weapons would be stored.
Lena nodded and pointed to several random places on the suit."You have many different types of ammunition to combat the most powerful opponents that you have gone up against in the past and those that are still at large."
"How do I use them?"Kara asked.
"The AI will run through how to operate everything through voice command."Lena told her."I also set it up with a motoring system that is always scanning so you will have 360 degree view available at anytime. The suit will also automatically warn you of any threats.It is hooked up to my secure server so it can't be hacked and no one but you or myself will be able to activate it or take it off of you."
"So it's my own personal suit and no one can take it away from me."Kara couldn't believe it.Impulsively she rushed forward and hugged Lena.Quickly realizing she may of hurt the woman she let go."Sorry."
Lean waved off her concerns."Don't worry you didn't hurt me.I'm made of tough stock."
"I still can't believe you made this for me."Kara looked over the suit in awe."It even has pants."
"Well it protects you from kryptonite so it would be useless if any part of your body was exposed."Lena said.
"It protects me from kryptonite exposure?"Kara couldn't imagine how Lena managed that.Even the DEO hadn't been able to protect her.
"Let me prove it."Lena motioned to a random slab of concrete in the containment room."Punch through that."
Kara stepped in the room and punched through the concrete easily."How does that prove it.There is no kryptonite near."
"There actually is.Some of your ammunition is made of kryptonite."Lena told her.
"How the hell did you manage that?"Kara thought that she and Clark had been able to get all the kryptonite in the world.
"When I took over Luthor Corp from Lex I found out about a secret lab where he was researching and developing weapons. He had kryptonite there. So I took what he had and transferred it to even more secure locations that only I know where they are."Lena said.
"I don't know how I feel about that."On one hand Kara thought she should be angry on the other she understood Lena's concerns.Clark was a threat to Lena and if Kara was in Lena's place she probably would keep some of the material as well."I understand why you have it though."
"So do you like the suit?"Lena asked changing the subject.
"It's amazing.I can't wait to try it out."Kara could already imagine the headache she was going to get from Alex demanding to have access to the suit.Kara wasn't going to let her sister touch it though.With the capability to be immune to kryptonite Kara felt a bit more confident. Taking away her one weakness gave Kara a way to stand up to others without any chance of them being able to force her to comply.
"Well why don't you do that.I have some other work to do."Lena wanted to hang out more with Kara but she could tell the woman was excited about the suit.Lena couldn't blame Kara though because she wanted to know how well it worked in the real world.
"Do you need to unlock the elevator for me?"Kara asked.
Lena shook her head."I programed you in so you have free access to come and go anytime you like."
"Seriously?!"Kara couldn't believe Lena was offering her that.
"Seriously.I don't have anything to hide from you SuperGirl.Plus the suit will take you here if something happens and you are incapacitated."Lena figured Kara would be safer with her than with the DEO.
"Thank you Lena."Kara was relieved to have someone other than her sister and the rest of her coworkers to rely on if something went wrong.As time went on she was trusting them less.
"It's no problem.Let me know if anything goes go wrong.The AI will be able to give you direct access to me no matter where I am so don't be afraid to reach out if you need help."Lena told her.
"I'll let you know."Kara promised and made her way to the elevator.
Lean watched her go feeling really pleased with herself.It had been hard designing and making the suit and at certain times she almost pulled her hair out with how frustrated she was with the thing but it was worth it.Kara was happy and that meant everything to her.Lena wasn't one to lie to herself and knew that she really made the suit because she cared about Kara a lot more than just a friend.Sometimes it felt like Kara felt the same but they still had to many secrets between them for either of them to act on it.Lena had never wanted to tell anyone about her true identity before but lately she found herself thinking it would be nice if Kara knew who she truly was.
