Less Treats, More Tricks

"You know, I'm starting not to mind our terrible overestimation of how seriously the Muggles in this building would take Halloween," Dora said from her spot in the living room. She was sunken into the sofa with her feet propped up on the coffee table. Teddy was sleeping against her chest and she was alternating between shoveling mouthfuls of candy in her mouth and devouring the plateful of chocolate chip pumpkin cookies that Remus had left at her side.

"I'm still shocked," Remus admitted. "I thought we'd have to make an effort to fit in with the Muggles, but even the children on our floor weren't trick-or-treating."

"So strange," Dora said. She unwrapped a miniature chocolate bar and tossed it in her mouth. With her mouth full, she added: "Again though, to be clear, I'm not complaining."

"You sure aren't," Remus said. He dried off the last of the dishes and circled back into the living room to go sit with her. Teddy was still wearing his Halloween costume; an orange onesie with a little hood to which Remus had sewn on a mane of brown fleece and a little tail. Dora had laughed so hard when she'd seen that little tail wiggle as Teddy crawled around the living room earlier, the poor baby had gotten upset. She had also called this "Gryffindor propaganda" despite Remus' objections that he hadn't even been thinking of such a thing and besides, she'd agreed. Next year they'd dress him up as a badger. Still, Dora hadn't complained for long given how cute their little lion cub was. She had even drawn whiskers on his cheeks with eyeliner.

"The biggest crime was that so few people got to see how cute he looks all dressed up," Remus said. "We'll have to send Harry and your mum pictures."

He lay down with his head on her lap. She let go of the candy long enough to start stroking his hair.

"Trick or treat," he said. She unwrapped another candy bar and lowered it into his mouth.

"Another treat?" Dora offered.

"I don't know, what are your tricks?" Remus asked.

"Well I'd have to put the baby away for those," she said.

"Don't you even joke about moving Nymphadora Tonks—he hasn't slept for more than an hour at a time all week," Remus said.

"That's Nymphadora Tonks-Lupin to you, sir," she said.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Is the offer of a treat gone for good now?"

"No, I suppose I can find you another," she said. She reached into the bowl of candy they'd set out for the trick-or-treaters. "Uh oh. I'm scraping the bottom of the bowl, Remus. You sure you don't want to move onto tricks?"

Remus laughed and she fed him more candy.

"We'll just get more candy next year," he said. Trick-or-treaters be damned.
