Act IV

Chapter 51: Another Future

Future Gohan:

Home.

Home sweet home.

When he stepped out of the time capsule, Gohan's eyes scanned the utterly ruined landscape around him. He could tell the Androids had swept through again recently, given that people were still hiding in the ruins. For all of the problems emerging with the synced timeline behind them, Gohan could at least say that there was a sense of hope there. The world was still standing. It wasn't laying down in the ruins of everything he saw around him now.

"It's not any different back home," Trunks voiced honestly, hopping out behind him, his feet landing nearby. "Not that I'm going to see home again."

Yea, that was only one of the dozen problems Gohan now found himself dealing with.

First, he ended up in a time where Frieza had his brother show up on Earth? Yea, he sure as hell didn't remember that one when he was watching his father beat Frieza and his father. He sure as hell didn't remember one of Frieza's family being able to beat a Super Saiyan, and then defeat someone as powerful as himself on the way down either. That was trouble, especially since his dad, his dad in his infinite naivety, let him go.

And that's before you factor in the family members I didn't ask for, and certainly don't know.

It was so weird to see Raditz. And that was before that hot-head Turles too. Whatever world he ended up in, it was definitely not his past. And with their world's being synced now, well, it was his past now, wasn't it? It was so weird. The more to help fight the Androids, the better... but how could you really trust those two? Raditz seemed a lot more mellow than the one that looked like his father to boot. It was confusing.

But that didn't count the tragedy of Vegeta and Trunks. God that'd been an ugly thing to go through. And he knew Trunks idolized the guy, which was going to make it all the harder to deal with when it came to a head. Vegeta was a vicious bastard for most of his own memories of him. He'd improved slightly by the time of his death at the hands of the androids. The Vegeta he ran into in the past only a short while ago, reminded him more starkly of the Vegeta that stood next to Nappa, than the one who was killed by Androids 17 and 18. Of course, they were all their environment, and if you add more violent Saiyans to the mix, you would get different outcomes than if you didn't.

It was hard to admit, but he was really on the borderline of beating the Hell out of Vegeta back on Earth and just taking enough blood to keep Trunks alive. That had a whole host of issues attached to it however. He wasn't the Androids, and couldn't just turn violent to get what he wanted or needed at a whim. That was an ever-present reminder. Even when he knocked out his 'uncle', it was stepping over the line. The fact that Vegeta would leave his own son to die was a very... difficult thing to accept. Especially after Trunks was killed in front of him, in his own time.

This time, actually.

"We'll find a way," Gohan admitted.

I can't just drag Trunks with me to Bulma's. Especially if he's not going to be a permanent fixture. Hey Bulma, I brought your dead son back with me. Yea, that'd go great.

"You were pretty amazing back on Earth," Trunks told him. "You fought Frieza's brother, and killed Frieza. It was pretty intense back there."

"Yea, I don't need praise for stepping in. Dad was probably waiting to sense Vegeta or Piccolo declining, otherwise he would have stepped in. You didn't look like you had time for that," Gohan admitted. "But Trunks? I'm proud of you. You became a Super Saiyan without me. I always knew you had it in you."

A half smile came back from Trunks as the time machine turned back into its capsule form behind them. Grabbing it out of the air as Trunks instinctively reached for the Capsule as well, Gohan just shook his head.

"Sorry, this guy's my one, remember?" he offered with a half smile of his own.

Trunks managed to keep his smile up, but Gohan could see the immediate change and almost felt like biting his tongue. Damn it, he knew exactly when to say the wrong thing. He was as bad as his dad, only worse because he realized when he said the wrong thing. The bigger deal was going to be when he talked to him in a minute about not going home. As in, not going back to the ruins of Capsule Corp. Damn, where the Hell was, he going to find him somewhere to live? Home with his own mother was a big no, given Chi-Chi would contact Bulma immediately. Half the planet could be under Android attack at any time, and he could see Trunks would try to do something about it. Right now, even together, he would put his money on them losing, and leaving the world a worse place.

Where the hell was he going to put him? He couldn't just leave him.

Without realizing it, Gohan had quirked his head to one side, crossing one arm across his chest and resting his free hand on his chin as he thought. Taking two steps to the side, he wasn't even looking.

"Trunks, I think that we should talk about how things have to go in this world. At least at first. I've really got ease Bulma into seeing you again. She really took your death hard. I really took your death hard... but it's not as simple as just showing up-"

Turning his head back to where Trunks was, Gohan blinked, seeing his alternate friend just... gone. Blinking, Gohan immediately reached out with his power, looking for any sign of Trunks. And of course, he sensed it heading straight for Capsule Corporation. Which was only maybe a minute away from where they were. Which meant he'd just been talking to himself. He'd been talking to himself like a moron. The next time he needed to ponder to himself, he really needed to at the very least pay attention to the critical things around him.

... Crap.

Trunks:

This place was a ruin. It was always a ruin, and that was something which made him so angry. Seeing this place like this was terrible. He wanted to see it like it was in the past. Even when he was just getting out of then hospital, there were so many people. And they weren't living in fear of their next moment being their last. Even in another future, where he imagined Gohan could have stopped the Androids, he didn't. It always devolved back to this. The place where he was from was a nightmare. Heading home like this was probably dumb, sure, but he could already tell Gohan was going to try and hold him off from going there. He could understand that, given he wasn't supposed to be here. But he wasn't going to sit around somewhere else for what? Ten Months or more?

Gohan was his hero, and like a brother to him, but sometimes he was wrong. Besides, if he was going to help fight the androids in this world, he was going to need to get help from his mom. The last person he had in the whole world was his mother. She knew he was dead here, didn't she? That was so... it wasn't even something he wanted to think about. To know that she'd felt the pain of losing him. A parent losing a child, something that happened to everyone else, and something she'd been afraid of for so long... came true.

And in this world, she's not got anyone. All she has is Gohan.

And he was still in shock about Gohan. In his own time Gohan was dead, long dead even. He was literally walking into the world he almost wished for. It should have been him, if anyone had to die, not Gohan. And this was the result. The world was still in ruins. The world still had Androids in it. The only difference was that instead of them grieving Gohan, they were grieving him. Did Gohan know that would happen? It seemed impossible that he could.

His feet landed outside the poorly kept grounds of a familiar dome, he took several steps towards the haggard and half destroyed entrance. Looters had destroyed more of the building than the Androids ever had. His grandfather had been killed by looters, and his grandmother was killed by the Androids as society spiralled once they'd started to destroy everything. So much had been ruined.

Walking through the front door of the familiar structure, he heard familiar sounds in the main lab. It sounded like welding today, which was always a fun one. Walking towards the door and placing his hand on it to push it aside as he always did, something gripped him. Not literally of course, but his body froze up. He was about to walk in like nothing happened. It was going to be just like he walked into his own home, wasn't it?

He was going to walk in wearing this really terrible set of clothes from Yamcha. He wanted her to be so happy to see him. But it was almost cruel, wasn't it? To walk in there as if he was her son. Well, he had been her son, hadn't he? All the way up to the point where her son... died. So, he was her son, up until a year ago? Two years ago? It was so strange to think of it that way. What right did he have to walk through these doors?

But what if I don't?

What had been a simple decision to walk through the threshold into this room, had become a deep question to himself. Looking down, he felt himself struggle to even understand what he was supposed to do.

"Trunks," Gohan's voice cut in quietly. "We'll get this taken care of later. I want to ease Bulma into this. Especially since this might not be forever."

When Trunks turned his head, he stared at the man who'd helped be there for him like the brother he never had. The sad truth was, Gohan was right, and he was almost always right. The familiar feeling of returning home felt alien to him now. This was and wasn't his home. It was a home that he once had, but it was vacant of him, wasn't it?

Nodding reluctantly, Trunks took a step away from the door, pulling his hand from the familiar surface before he started to walk towards Gohan. His arms and legs felt like lead weights as he did all the same, but right now what was important was focusing on the task at hand. This world needed people to save it. Even if that meant they had to wait months to do it. There was a chance if they saved this world, they could save his own as well.

It's so weird that this is and isn't my home.

"I've got a place in Orange Star City you can lie low at," Gohan told him. "I'll talk to Bulma after. Just give me a few days, maybe a week, to figure out how to break it to her. Don't worry about it."

Quietly, Trunks nodded his head again in agreement before preparing to walk back out the entrance he came. Back through a lobby which would have been his home at one point in this world, before he died. Shadowing him closely, Gohan just seemed to have a smile on his face. It was like things were turning around, wasn't it? This planet had a real chance now to be healed. Even if his own home seemed so far away, just being here with Gohan gave him a real sense for the first time that they could do this.

"So, where am I laying low in ruins of Orange Star City?"

"Uhhhh, one of the locals who helps run a shelter and soup kitchen. I've known her for a couple years. We're on good terms. She might be a bit upset when we drop by. Buuuut I'm pretty sure I can talk her into it."

Stopping, Trunks couldn't believe what he was hearing, looking at Gohan in almost disbelief.

"No way. I don't believe it. Are you dating someone? Really?"

A nervous smile emerged on Gohan's face as he closed his eyes, rubbing the back of his head.

"I mean. We've been on a few dates. It's close to where my mom is and I try to help out where I can when I can. It's nothing big. Don't worry about it! All that matters are that she can help out! I promise."

"You are way too much man. What's her name at least?"

"Look, let's talk on the way th-"

"Gohan? You're back? How did it g..." Bulma's voice was cut off as the sound of a power drill hitting the floor range out through the lobby.

Nervously, Trunks turned his head towards the figure standing in the doorway leading to the main lab. There was a look of bewilderment, mixed with shock. Tears were already forming in the corners of her eyes as something akin to relief seemed to wash over her. In his whole life, he didn't think he'd ever seen his mom look so happy, and at the same time look so hurt. His own throat tightened at the sight of it as the ends of his fingers seemed to go cold. It took him almost a dozen seconds to start to find his voice again. There was a lot to say, and he didn't know how to say any of it.

The only thing to come of it, was what came naturally.

"Hey mom."

Gohan: Three Years Prior

This place was a wreck.

Burning buildings riddled the landscape, and all it reminded him of was the fact he wasn't his father. His dad would have found a way to solve this by now. How many years had he been just able to stand by and watch? How many times had he tried to intervene and they just laughed at him? How many times had he let everyone down by failing? Every time this happened, it happened because he'd failed.

The city just burned. Everyone was too afraid to come out of hiding to try and put it out. Swooping down, Gohan was reminded by the scattered bodies laying in the streets, that no one came for the wounded or dead. The Androids often struck the first people coming to rescue anyone who was hurt or dying. No one took the risk. Which meant that nothing but suffering was waiting the people down there.

Landing, his eyes were peeled for Androids. When none came, he knelt down, checking the pulse on one of the bodies. Dead. Another body? Dead. The list went on as he moved over a dozen people, trying to find any signs of any survivors who weren't already dead.

"Hey!" a voice called out.

Looking up the road, he saw a woman crouched over a girl on the street. He didn't recognize either, but he didn't expect to. Moving quickly, Gohan ran over to the pair and knelt down.

"She's alive," the woman commented. "I think if we get her help, she might make it. I don't know where the injury is-"

"It's internal. She needs a doctor," Gohan answered immediately. "Help the others, I'll get her somewhere. Unless you know her? Do you need to go-"

"I don't know her. I'll try to help the others, just go!"

When she stared back at him seriously, he noticed how determined her blue eyes were. Nodding, he was quick to take off, leaving a briefly stunned woman behind. His destination was a small community on the outskirts of the city. Almost no city hospitals existed anymore. Thankfully the township of Grapa existed in some stable form. The local doctor there was a familiar friend, and he was bringing a familiar problem, a critically injured patient.

After he dropped the girl off, he found himself heading back to Orange Star City, landing in the same desolated street, and the same girl was trying to help more people. Others had slowly started to gather around her, helping the wounded as she started pointing people in different directions, trying to organize the rescue effort.

Pointing at him a second later, Gohan only blinked before she pointed to another person nearby who two others are helping.

"Yea, I pointed at you!" she shouted. "If you can fly like those monsters, you can save this guy! Now get to it!"

Well, you heard the woman. Let's get to it.

A smile broke out on Gohan's face despite the desperation of all of this. Maybe for once there might be something good to come out of all this.

Gohan:

Easing them into this seemed to immediately fly out the window as Gohan looked off to the side when Bulma took a trembling step forward. Explaining to her that this wasn't her Trunks was something he couldn't bring himself to say. In truth, he was her Trunks, he had been up until the point where one of them died. For whatever reason, that was the divergence in their timelines. He had all the memories of the Trunks they'd lost, and a few more beyond that. There weren't any words being exchanged after Trunks greeting, not at first.

When she took another step, her hand raising up, trembling even more than her legs were, something of a choked sob emerged. It was enough for Gohan to swallow in response, finding it difficult to be around something like this. Oh, it looked good on the surface, but it was just another tragedy waiting to happen. That was the real tragedy behind all this. It wasn't going to last, there would be another separation.

"Trunks," Bulma managed. "Y-y-your home."

When the tears flowed freely, that was when it was all over. Another choked sob left his father's oldest friend before she rushed over to Trunks, grabbing him immediately and hugging him like someone who never wanted to let go. The Saiyan she was holding onto was blinking hard himself and Gohan could understand why. Trunks wasn't Vegeta, and that was never truer than in that moment. Closing his own eyes, he reached his arms up and around his mother and just stood there with her as her chest trembled while she cried.

How did you tell someone this wasn't your Trunks?

"Yea mom, I'm home," Trunks managed through his own trembling voice.

That was a problem, wasn't it? Everything told him that it was the wrong thing to say. Why the Hell did he have to go and say that? Damn it, he couldn't blame him. If he were in his shoes, he might do the same thing.

"I missed you so much," Bulma breathed, not moving more than an inch since she'd grabbed him.

"I know," Trunks responded, looking over at him as Bulma kept her head buried into his chest.

Bittersweet described this moment more than anything for him.

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

Trunks:

How did you say anything other than what they wanted to hear? How did you say anything other than what you wanted to say? He wanted to be home, and he wanted so much for her to be happy. The sad truth was, this probably was his home now, not that he was thinking about that. All he could think about right now was that his moment was so relieved and happy to see him, she was crying. Just how the Hell could he explain this?

He'd almost never seen his mother cry. The last time he did, it was when Chi-Chi came over to collect... Gohan... in his own time. That'd been a hard day. Right now, today wasn't exactly easy either. When she finally pulled back, she looked into his eyes, looking at him as if she was searching for any signs that this wasn't real, no doubt. Questions appeared in the familiar face staring back at him. That was going to be the complicated part, wasn't it?

"But how?" she finally asked, looking over to Gohan, who was dead silent on his end.

Trunks could sense the change in demeanour on Gohan's end. He was annoyed, but didn't want to intrude. Almost a defensive reflex cropped up over Trunks at the sight of it. Instead of either of them answering Bulma, the silence lingered for almost a minute before she pulled away from him, concern coming over her as her eyes started to panic, looking over them.

"This isn't real, is it?" she asked, staring between the two of them.

"No, it's real mom," Trunks answered her quickly. "It's-"

"Complicated," Gohan finished for him, taking over as he uncrossed his arms and walked between the two of them, before delivering the trademark smile that he seemed to always have in a tense situation.

"Why don't we grab something to eat, and I can start going over what happened. And we can go over how Trunks is here."

I'm really dead here, aren't I?

It really just hit him when he looked at his mom, before looking back to Gohan. There was an immense guilt from being here. He was slipping into the life of another person, someone who was him, but now wasn't him. It was like stepping into the shoes of someone else. How did he feel like an outsider in an environment so familiar to him? Even now, even as she'd pulled back, his mom was clutching onto his arm as if she was afraid to let go.

It was hard to put on a smile for some reason, but Trunks managed it. If this really did end up being his future, and he really never did get home, it'd be almost robbing a grave.

His mom didn't say a word as they started down towards the familiar living space inside the home, he grew up in. Well, grew up in most of the time anyway. She probably didn't want to say a thing right now. The way Gohan had mentioned how he'd gotten here sounded almost foreboding, not intentionally of course, but it paved the way towards disappointment. Because even though he used to be her Trunks, her Trunks died in the amusement park. He was the Trunks that lived.

And that was going to be something they both had to come to terms with, and Trunks knew he still hadn't fully gotten it yet.

()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()

Gohan: Two Years Prior

If only this had been another time.

He'd been wayward for almost a year now. Failing Trunks, failing Bulma, failing everyone weighed heavily on him. Worse yet, failing to stop the androids, and still knowing he was their inferior, made it all the worse. All he could do was punish himself by following the trail of destruction they left behind. It was just like being a child. Because when he was a child, he followed the trail of corpses they left behind. The corpses of his friends, one by one, left to the wayside.

And now, just as before, they'd waltzed through Orange Star City. The city hadn't even been repaired properly since last time. Half of the city was in complete ruins with no signs of rebuilding. Everyone had learned clearing out collapsed buildings and redeveloping didn't matter, because the Androids would return within a year or two and level it again anyway.

All I do is come by and pick up the pieces. I just watch them ruin lives and destroy, and I can't do anything about it, can I? Every time I think I'm strong enough, I fail.

It made him even angrier at himself when the thoughts slowly washed over him. That anger seemed to double when he landed in the midst of the familiar site. Bodies and broken buildings. There were hushed whispers echoing from the ruins around him, mixed with fearful and strained sobs. Of course, there was, this tragedy just unfolded, again. Even being here, what did it do?

"Hey!" a voice shouted out from behind him. "Hey you! Get over here, and start flying people out of here!"

Blinking, Gohan almost took a few seconds to realize he was being shouted at. When he turned around, looking down the desolated street, there was a strangely familiar figure kneeling over a pair of people, one of them a child.

It only took a moment for him to land, running over within seconds. One looked like they'd been badly burned, the child, and the other almost looked like their arm was severed.

Survivors. They almost never got away without something permanent. There was always a reminder those monsters left behind for everyone. It was time to start flying people out, that much he was sure of however.

"I'll start moving people out," he promised, trying to help the child up first.

The ferry started early in the day, and by the end of the night, there was no one left. Anyone he could get to a hospital or care, he took, and anyone who was too far gone… well, they'd passed on. With the curtain of night hanging over them, Gohan took care of those whose time ran out before he could save them. It wasn't hard to dig a hundred graves, not with the powers he'd been granted through the fortune of his parents. What was hard, was laying them all to rest.

People with scared looks forever etched to their faces, or pain, or a quiet look. He did his best. That was always the case, wasn't it? He always tried his best.

A few lights were on in the city, illuminating the park which had become a cemetery. He felt numb, sitting there alone, looking at the rows of freshly upset soil. This park wasn't in use anymore anyway, was it? Nothing was. Everyone was just trying to survive when those monsters appeared. People found a way.

The sound of footsteps caught his attention among the silence, before a pair or tattered jeans were to his left, before a lone figure sat next to him, her hands had blood stains on them as well, clearly from a series of desperate actions to save people's lives. When he looked over to her, he saw a shaken person. He didn't need to say anything, and just turned his attention back to the graves.

"When will it end?" she asked. "When will all of this nightmare finally come to an end?"

When I stop it.

The only problem was, he couldn't yet. Every death out there was on his shoulders, weren't they?

Author's Notes:

Bit of an interlude chapter. I really felt I had to do something with the Future Cast, at the very least to show what happened when they went back to Future Gohan's time. It's not a chapter I really wanted to write, but its one I felt I needed to write. It ends up being slightly shorter as a result. I actually cut it off a few pages, as it felt like it was dragging. I think it's at the right length and development to be an interesting read, and divulge more about this future and the people in it.

I've been writing pretty well nonstop since Christmas, and I've managed to get up to Chapter 55 written. Chapter 56 is almost finished. This means for the first time in a long time, The Catalyst will have regular updates for at least a while. I'm hoping to put out 2 chapters a month for at least a bit. I'm hoping I can get up to Chapter 60 written before I flip back over to writing The Long Road, as well as just starting back to work (I was on vacation). My life's extremely busy, which is one reason for the slower update schedule in general. It will be nice to get content out for The Catalyst regularly though, for the first time in years. I'm always a bit nervous when revisiting it, as I've always gotta reread almost the whole damn story to really recapture the characters. That's my only regret. Lol

Also, thank you everyone who reviewed. 20 Reviews for The Catalyst is definitely above the norm. It's also one reason I put more effort into trying to get this one updated. Reviews = attention for the story. It is the sweet, precious currency here. :P

Reviewers:

Blades of Fury: Uhhhh. No comment on Raditz and Vegeta. Let's just say there are issues there. Turles crashing and burning is just kinda what he does. The real question is how bad can he crash that car, and see if he can survive it. Lol

Pyromania101: I personally like The Long Road more, I do think about it more honestly. Though I'll say that The Catalyst does have more scenes that I like (At least in term of what's coming up). There is just some incredible stuff coming up this Saga, as well as in the interlude period after. And the Android Saga is really gonna belong to Raditz, so I'm really excited to that. There are just some tragic scenes that are really coming up, and how they impact the characters and their development is really fascinating to me.

Super Mystic Gohan: Family, namely Gohan and somewhat Raditz, are the only things that hold any meaning for Turles. That's probably the only thing that really keeps him from being a major villain in the story… *still a major villain, lol

Aashiq: I did update! I even updated 1 week afterwards. Come at me bro! lol

Jetiq: Thanks dude. I always love hearing people are enjoying my work. It's literally why I do this, lol

Kacarrot: How about another update, before the end of the year? Bulma and Vegeta's relationship is definitely more detached in this, and yea, it's still happening. It comes from a less honest place, in that Bulma feels safe around Vegeta. Vegeta literally makes her feel safe, he's the one pulling her out of the fire more often then not, really since Namek. Vegeta kinda doesn't care about that, at least at first, but it grows on him I suspect. It's a very… cold dynamic, but I'm really excited to explore it. I don't get to write romantic relationships, or their evolution, very often, so it's actually a nice break.

Transformers G1-Prime: Slug's got some awesome stuff coming up. Don't think of Movie based Lord Slug (though he's definitely an inspiration for him)… It'll be interesting, I promise. And also, I'll let everyone know here… The Next Saga, the Catalyst gets revealed :O

Proman1398: I think I answered by Pm, but screw it, let's answer here too. I've used some other proverbs around. I use it because it kinda describes how Turles sees family. If his kid was stronger than he was, he'd not care if he was killed by him. Very much a social Darwinist, at least on the outside. Turles and Vegeta also would have some education from their pods on Saiyan Society, and other notes and ect. Vegeta also had Nappa to "learn" from. Social creatures, even Saiyans, tend to look for the familiar in their lives. Turles, even in his nefariousness, is still drawn towards his family. I took that as a note even in Tree of Might, where he's trying to get Goku and Gohan to sign up with him, rather than kill them. In that he's not related, but that's very much where that comes from.

As to Raditz's big moment. It'll be coming in the post Saga of the next Saga. It's a big moment, but not necessarily a good one. He's got a lot of character development coming during this upcoming Saga, but really its coming in the aftertime of Act IV, and into Act V. I actually feel really bad for Raditz for what's coming.

Maxridelover: I'm all about the underused characters. I try to make them interesting. I hope I've succeeded. 😊

Thomas-The-TMC: Happy new years now too :P. It's more related to him not having an Oozaru buff in his human form anymore.

Jason9000: The real question is going to be… Will Raditz want to keep everything in check… No spoilers. 😉

OuterSpaceHooker: OM NOM NOM!

Guest1: There is an honesty in the relationship between Turles and Gohan. Catalyst Gohan has so many good people around him, and good rolemodels, that it's hard to imagine him turning into TLR Gohan. It would be interesting though… if somehow TLR Gohan ended up in The Catalyst though, wouldn't it? Not saying that'd happen of course. Just a thought. :P

KagariAsuha: Gohan can see people really for not just who they are, but who they could be. Turles is a violent, sexist, utter bastard. But honestly, why is he that way? The environment of his life helped mould him as much as his inherent personality. Turles isn't completely heartless, he just doesn't make decisions based on a moral compass of "Good and Evil". To quote him (and another reviewer) "I understand the difference between right and wrong. I just don't care."

Luke: No time to write a novel, lol. I am really happy that you enjoy my work though. 😊

TheSeaCat: You burned through the whole story! I hope it keeps you drawn in over the next Saga. I think it will of course. 😊

FC: Turles, Raditz, Piccolo, Goku, and Vegeta are all super important to getting right in this story. It's really their story. And I'm super happy to write them.

Karina: You're going to love Chapter 55.

A-Fan: Turles definitely is envious of Goku. I won't go much further on that for the moment. lol
