"Ping?" I heard a voice call, as I got a whiff of dinner, or maybe it was just some bizarre string of hope. "Go away…" I muttered as Shang entered. "No chance in helll am I doing that." He said, sitting beside me, setting the food out on the mat. "Sorry… Thought you were someone else…" "Like who?" He asked curiously. "I don't want to say…" "Tell me, honey. Is someone trying to hurt you?" I looked down, and said "Chi Fu… and Yao… They've been trying to sneak into my tent all day… Before you caught them…" He said "Honey, I'm soo sorry…" I ate quietly, as I said "it's okay…" His arms wrapped around me and said "I love you, I'm sorry today was so hard for you… What can I do to help you?" I shook my head and said "There's really nothing. Just need you beside me, holding me close… Please…" He said "Whatever you need, babe. I'm here 100%, for you. Just let me take the dishes out, and I'll be right back." He picked up the dishes and took them out. "HE'S GETTING TOO FAT. WHAT GOOD WILL THAT DO US ON THE FRONT LINES?!" Chi Fu yelled. I covered my ears.
Little did I know, that was only the beginning of the hellish next few days. "Ping. Quick. Get dressed in your armor." I quickly got the armor on, and left the tent, packed it up and got it on Khan, before Shang came over, and said "You Okay?" He whispered. "No…" "I'll send you home, as soon as we get to the city…" I said "I have to…" He shook his head, and said "No. Don't argue." I nodded. We marched off to war. "Damn it…" Shang said as we looked for any survivors, in a destroyed village. We looked over the cliff, seeing the general's army completely dead. "Shang. I'm so sorry…" He took the helmet, from Yao, plunged his sword in the snow, and placed the helmet on top. "The Huns are moving quickly. We'll make better time to the imperial city through the Tung Shao pass. We're the only hope for the Emperor and all of China!" Shang said as we continued marching. Finally, we arrived at the battlefield, ducking the flying arrows. What happened next was a blur, I'm not even sure what happened, till I dropped on the cliff, a little too close to the edge, rolled off in pain. "AHH." Shang's hand grabbed mine pulling me up. "He's wounded! Get help!"
When I woke up I was in what looked like a medic tent, weak and tired. "Mulan…" Shang whispered, as he came over, sitting beside me. "You're Okay… So is the baby by some miracle." Shang moved my hair from my face. "What happened?" I asked. "Shan Yu sliced your arm open, and when you fell, your arm broke…" "It'll be Okay… I'm going to send you home, due to injury, first thing." I leaned up and kissed him, as the tent flap opened, and Ling said "Oh Gods. I beg your pardon!" We blushed. "Don't tell anyone…" Ling said "I wouldn't dream of it…" That night we stayed right there in the pass. In the morning, we went to the city, and after everything, was said and done, Shang and I were in the stables, getting my horse ready to go. "I'll come to you soon, Most likely 2 weeks, but I'll try to get there sooner." I nodded, as we took Khan out. "If you get home and feel unsafe, come right back here, to this address, I'll meet you there." He handed me a piece of paper, before helping me onto my horse. "Safe travels, love." He pulled himself enough to give me a kiss, before I left.
Once I got home, I tended to Khan before going into the garden. Big mistake. My father was angry, he looked at me, and swung his cane hitting my eye, and cheek. I got up and walked to the stables, got Khan, and rode off. I got halfway to the city, before I stopped, feeling super dizzy. "Oh Khan, what am I going to do…" He nuzzled me towards the water. I splashed water on my face drank some, and felt tons better, well except for my eye swelling shut. I knew I could make it, to the city. I rode quickly and made it to the city, and the address Shang gave me, and put Khan in the stables. "Mulan?" Shang's voice said as he entered the stables. I jumped, but didn't look at him. "Sorry… Mother said that she heard some noise in the stable…" Shang said, coming over to me, I didn't turn. "Mulan?" I turned towards him, but didn't lift my head to see his eyes. "Mulan, look at me." His hand was under my chin, I shook my head, causing Shang to lift my head, to see his. "Oh. My God. Mulan what the hell happened?! You only had a broken arm and stitches when you left here!" I ducked my head, once more. "I don't want to talk about it… I'm tired, hurting, and starving…" Shang said "Come on." I felt his arm around my waist as we walked into the house. "Shang what is this?" His mother, asked. "Mom, You remember Mulan… My fiancée?" Shang's mom nodded, as Shang said "Well, I'm not sure of what happened at her home, tonight, but I know she doesn't feel safe. She's going to stay here, tonight, and tomorrow, we'll marry." Shang's mom said "Good, serve dinner girl." I said "NO! I'M NOT YOUR FREAKING SERVANT." Shang looked at me, as his mom said "Shang, did you hear how she talked to me?!" I looked at Shang, who said "I did, But I also heard what you said." Shang's arm was around my waist pulling me close to him, causing me to turn my head into his shoulder, earning a kiss on the head. "Shang, I've told you this girl is NOT the one for you! Your father might've been blinded, But I'm not. She doesn't even have the good qualifications to be a good wife!" I ducked my head, as Shang said "Maybe she doesn't have your standards, but she meets mine."
I looked at Shang's face, as he said "She means everything to me, and I love her." Shang's eyes met mine, as he said "I wouldn't trade her for anything, or anyone else in the whole world." I smiled, a bit at that. "Hey, why don't you go and lay down? My room is the third door. I'll bring some food and a cold cloth for you." I nodded, and went to his room, stripping out of my clothes and pulled on a pair of Shang's extra training outfits, laying on the bed. "Hey Dinner." Shang said as he entered the room, setting the food on the bed. "And a cold compress for your eye…" I smiled, small as I ate, and he placed a cold compress on my eye. "Will you tell me what happened? I do NOT like the fact you went to your home, and came back to me less than a day since you left, injured." I said "I will… But you may not like it…" Shang caressed my wounded cheek, and said "I know that… But still. Tell me…" I said "When I got home… and went to the gardens, my dad was there… He… Took one look at me… and either didn't think I was real… Or… like… didn't recognize me… He swung his walking stick… it hit me in the eye and cheek… I got up, got on Khan and rode off… I knew I shouldn't have ridden all the way here with my cheek throbbing and eye swelling shut, and with one good arm… But… I couldn't stay…" Shang said "Stop. You did exactly what I thought and hoped you would. You came right here, when you didn't feel safe, and I am so incredibly proud of you." I said "But I'm a coward… A brave person doesn't run…" Shang said "Did you really just say that?" I nodded, slowly.
"Mulan, my darling… Being brave, doesn't mean you don't run. Being brave means doing something you know is right, that you don't go looking for trouble. So you ran from the situation at your parents, so what? You helped defeat a whole army. You fought against Yao and Chi Fu during a moment in time, where it might've been easier to just give up. You told me about the abuse, you were incurring. I trained you to be one of my best, and you are. After the hell of the past couple months, I don't mind anything you feel like being selfish with. You deserve it. Running doesn't make you a coward, unless you ran from an actual battle. You ran from your parents." He kissed my head. "Thank you… For making me feel better… And for siding with me against your mom…" Shang smiled, and said "always. I'll always side with you, as your husband. Now I'm going to clean up these dishes, you keep the cold compress on for another 3 minutes." He left, and I closed my eyes.
When he returned, he changed into a pair of pajamas. "Feeling better my beautiful sexy, wife?" He said sitting beside me. "A little… Be honest… how bad does my eye look…?" He looked at me, and said "um… Not bad. Not bad at all… But I do want you to get checked out by the town medic, while I'm at the palace, tomorrow. Okay?" I said "It does hurt like hell, if I'm being honest, so I won't object. I was going to go any ways… Check on the baby…" Shang said "Good." He laid beside me, opened his arm, and I curled up carefully in them. "Sleep now." I fell asleep in his arms.
In the morning I woke, to Shang's missing body from the bed, but found a note.
'My dearest Mulan,
I'm sorry the letter finds you, versus me. I had to go to the palace early. Go to the doctors then go right back home. I'll meet you there.
Look after my heart. I left it with you.
Love always,
Shang'
I smiled at the letter, quickly got dressed before going to the kitchen area. "You're not allowed to eat breakfast, You are too fat! Not good for bearing children!" I said "Actuall… Actually… I need to eat…" She started yelling at me, which caused me to grab the first thing I saw which was an apple, It would hold me over. I went out and walked to the doctors, it wasn't that far. "Hi, I need to see a doctor, please… I need to check on a war wound, my eye, and my baby's health…" I said to the person sitting at the desk of the clinic, who said "Have a seat. The doc will see you in 5." I sat, patiently, as Shang entered, and came over to me. "Hey. Are you Okay?" He sat beside me, as I laid my head on his lap, misery overcoming me. "No." "Fa Mulan?" I heard, stood as Shang rose taking my hand in his, as we entered. "Uh Sir, Please wait in the waitin…" "He comes. He's my husband, and I need him there." I said leaving no room for argument, as we entered the room, and I sat on the exam table. "So, I know you told the receptionist, you wanted to check on a war wound, your eye and baby. What has top priority for you?" "All of them. You pick."
Shang said "I take her eye, then baby and war wound." The doctor said "Looks like quite an injury… How'd you get it?" Shang looked at me before he said "Her dad, hit her with his walking stick. I don't know if it was on purpose or accident…" The doctor said "Well it does look extremely swollen… When did it happen? What have you done so far?" I said "Last night…" Shang said "All we've done is a cold compress… I had just gotten home, and settled, back in after battle, when she showed up… I got her into my room, got her some dinner, since she's not able to really skip meals, since she gets sick every single time she skips a meal, and did a cold compress on her eye…" The doctor said "What hit her?" I said "My father's walking cane… But I think I scared him or startled him…" I saw the doctor frowned, as Shang said "It's alright, Honey…"
The doctor said "Okay, well, I want you to continue doing cold compresses every hour, till the swelling goes away. How did she get a war injury? How far along would you say she is?" I looked at Shang, and away from the doctor. "She disguised herself as a man to save her father's life… and What would you say darling?" I said "12 weeks…" The Doctor said, "alright, are you planning on continuing the pregnancy?" "I'm not taking the don quai! What kind of person do you think I am!?" I stated. Shang said "Mulan… Relax… Breathe gently…" The doctor gave a head to toe exam, and said "Okay… S0 everything else looks good, the baby seems very healthy, based on the information you gave during the exam, I suspect, that 8 weeks, would be extremely accurate. Do you know who the father is? And was she raped?" I turned away, tears in my eyes. "We don't know who the official father, because she was raped by 2 other men around the same time as myself. I was with her the most since, but if it was 8 weeks ago, it's possible the other 2 men could be the father as well."
The doctor said "If you really want to know, who the father is, we have special testing we can do, to figure it out… It's very new, but very effective." Shang looked at me and said "What do you want to do Mulan?" I looked back to him, then to the doctor. "If we did decide to get the testing… What does it entail?" The doctor said "Well, We'd go in through your area, with a little needle attached to a syringe, take a little blood from the baby, and in 24-48 hours, we can decipher who the father is, but we need DNA samples from all the possible fathers. The hole would be tiny, and not cause any permanent damage. I'll analyze all three, Usually I can spot similarities, the baby's blood, always shows one distinct feature to link the fathers. Spit and blood will best." I looked up at my husband and said "What do you think?" Shang said "Ultimately, it's your call, Mulan. I'll support your decision, regardless. You're my wife." I smiled, but said "I know… but if you were me, what would you do?" He said "I know you want to know who the father is… So I'd do the testing… I'll get the samples from the other two baby daddies, and I'll give mine now." I nodded and said "Let's do the testing… Can we drop off the other DNA samples from the other two tonight or tomorrow?" The doctor said "The sooner, the better, as I can get the results quicker, but if you can't get both till tonight, tomorrow morning will be perfect. "
I nodded, Shang's hold comforted me, during the procedure. After the procedure, Shang gave his sample, and promised we'd bring the others later. We went to find Yao. "PST. Duck." I whispered, as Yao spit in our direction, Shang caught it midair, without getting spotted by Yao. "Nice catch." I whispered, as he shut the jar we used. "Thank you." We went to the palace, hiding the jar. "There you are…" Chi Fu's voice, said. Shang had another jar, in hand. "Back off, Chi Fu." Shang warned. It didn't deter him. Shang managed, to fight Chi Fu, weakening him. He managed to catch a few drops of blood from a cut sample, hiding it in the jar. Once we covered, the incident, we talked to the Emperor, about it as a precaution, before we got married. "Let's go drop the samples off, and get home…"
I said "Sounds good." We went back to the clinic, and went in. "Hi, we told the doctor we'd drop off these samples." I said to the receptionist. "What's the patient's name? Samples name?" I said "Li Mulan. I wrote the names of the person we got the samples from." "Perfect, I'll take them now." The doctor said, as I handed the samples over. "I'll go check them now, and see which one is the father. I can let you know first thing tomorrow, or tonight." I looked at Shang, who said "Whichever is easier. If you do come tonight, come to the third door, on the Li property. That's the one that leads to our room… Tomorrow… I'm not sure what the plan is, but I do have to go to the palace, in the morning, Mulan maybe home." "If I am, I most likely will be in the gardens…" The Doctor nodded, and said "Thank you. If you're not around Mrs. Li?" I said "Go to the palace, and give it to Shang." The doctor nodded, as we left. Once we arrived home, I went to the gardens. Shang followed. "What's on your mind?" He asked as we sat on the bench. "Just thinking…" Shang said "Hey, I know you're worried, about who the baby daddy is, but I don't care. I support you in every choice. If you decide to not go through it, I'll be your strength. If you want to drop the baby off to the father, I'll help you. But if you want to keep the baby, Then I'll raise it at your side if it's Yao's or Chi Fu's. If the baby is mine, I'll be even more happy about it. Whatever you want I'll help you do it." I said "I love you, and Thank you… For being here, and helping me through this, helping me make the decisions… I'm so grateful, to have you as my husband."
Shang kissed my head, and said "I love you so much. What happened before I got there…? You looked so miserable…" I said "Your mom tried to stop me from getting breakfast. I grabbed an apple, and ate it. The lunch we got at the palace, was the first real meal I've had all day." Shang frowned, and said "I'll talk to her, or I'll bring some breakfast to our room." "Thank you." We stayed outside all afternoon, Shang only leaving in order to get cold compresses. "We should head in… It's getting dark…" Shang commented as we headed to the house. "Why don't you take a nice long bath while, I grab some dinner for you." I nodded, and quickly bathed before going to the bedroom and pulling on Shang's training clothes. "Look, after what you did, I don't want you near her! You've hurt her enough!" Shang's voice said right outside the door, he came in placing the cold compress on the eye. "The swelling is almost gone. I think a couple more cold compresses, will be good." I smiled, and nodding before looking over to the visitor. "Get away from me." I said, flinching closer to the window. "Mulan, please… I'll go but listen… I…" My fear was clear even to Shang. "I was shocked… and surprised… I was caught off guard… and was sick…" I said "THAT'S NO EXCUSE TO HURT YOUR DAUGHTER!" Shang frowned, as my father said "Is nothing ever an excuse to you?! Do you just expect to glide through life? Not paying the consequences of your actions?! You're a failure! You'll never be a good wife!" I started feeling tears in my eyes. Shang said "Okay you know what? That's it!" He stood angrily, looking at my father. "Being upset is one thing. But, when you upset my WIFE, it's another matter, entirely. I'm going to as one more time. Will you please leave?" My father turned and walked out without another word. Shang sat beside me instantly and said "Are you alright?" I said "He's right… I'm a failure…" He said "why do you think that?"
"Because I can't cook, or clean… or do anything right…" I replied. Shang said "Mulan, darling… I don't care about any of that… Look at me…" I looked up, as he said "I love you. So much, Mulan. I don't care if you're not the ideal wife… Want to know why? Because you were never the ideal girl, which is one of the main reasons, I have fallen head over heels in love with you even before I knew what love was. I love every little unique quality, and the little things, like cooking and cleaning? I don't care about it." I smiled small and said "You really have that much faith in me..?"
"Absolutely. I've always known it… Do you remember the first time you ever ran off?" He asked, as I said "Yeah… More than I'd like to admit… That kid made me run off in tears, and I got lost in the woods… Tried to get a fire going, to cook some food, I had found… Burned it… Then the fire went out, and I was freezing…" Shang said "I told your father I'd go find you… so I ran after you looking all over for you, till I heard crying… Followed the crying till I found you… Looked half frozen to death… and starving…" I looked at his smile. "It was the first time, we discovered I needed to eat more…" He said "Yup… I had eaten, most of the snacks my mom packed, except the grapes, I hated grapes… But I managed to get a couple of birds. I rebuilt the fire, watched you perk up a bit, moving closer to warm up, though still weak from hunger." I said "You wasted no time, and started cooking." Shang smiled, and said "I remember giving you most of the birds, and the grapes… You needed it more than I did."
I smiled, and said "It was the first time in a long time, where I felt safe, and loved… Not that my parents were abusive or anything… Just… different. My dad treated me a son, which is why I knew some of the martial arts skills… My mom… Treated me like a nuisance. Hated me. Forced me to cook and clean, and if I messed up, she'd send me to bed without super more times than I can count… I guess I should've put them t together sooner… I always felt weak, as a child… Took an hour after eating to feel better… That night, when I got home, mom was furious. Sent me to my room telling me to stay there for 3 days… I remember you sneaking over, handing me food through the window, so I didn't get sick… I never told you how much I appreciated that." Shang looked at me sadly. "I'm so sorry…" "It's okay… It's what I knew… How did you ever learn how to cook?" He smiled small and said "I'll tell you over dinner… I'll go get it and be back soon." He kissed my head as he left, for 10 minutes before returning with a bunch of food.
"When My mother was pregnant with Shi Yi, She got so sick, Could barely get up to make breakfast or any meals… I took over everything, since father was always off at war… So I had too. My mom was so grateful. I ended up taking care of everything till Dad got home, after Mom delivered my sister…" "Did I hear my big brother talking about me?" A woman said as she came in. "In she doth appear." He muttered with a smile, and a wink to me. "Oh Come on big brother! You know you love me!" I chuckled fondly. "Hi… Fa Mulan right?" I said "Li Mulan, now, But yes the very same!" Shi Yi smiled and said "Hi. Shi Yi." Shang said "Hey, I'll be back okay? I'm going to take care of the dishes…" He kissed my head as he left.
"So How are you?" Shi Yi asked. "Look, We don't have to make small talk… I know you don't like me, and I know your mother doesn't like me." Shi Yi looked upset, and said "That's not true, Well not the whole I don't like you part… I do like you." I said "Really?" She nodded and said "Yes, and I know you're a good fit for my brother." I smiled. "Thank you. I wish your mother saw it that way…" Shi Yi said "I know… I'm sorry…" Just then there was a tap on the window. I turned and saw the doctor, holding a piece of paper." I popped open the window. "Hey I wanted to drop this off for you guys." He said as I took the paper. "Thank you." He left and I shut the window. "What's that about?" Shi Yi asked. "If I tell you… It does NOT leave this room…"
Shi Yi said "Of Course." I took a deep breath. "I was raped… By two different men… The only one I consented to was Shang… But they were all, around the same time so now that I'm pregnant I'm not sure, who is the baby daddy, so the doctor did a thing where they could compare the samples, and he would tell me and Shang who the official daddy is." Shi Yi, said "Do you think any other man would want to marry a girl who was raped?" I said "I think there is someone. Why do you ask?" She looked down, and said "I was at the palace yesterday… and I can't remember who… But I think it was that Chi Fu look alike…" I said "I might know someone who might be interested… If you'd like, I can set it up…" She looked at me shocked. "Would you?" I nodded and said "Absolutely, I'll go talk to the one I'm thinking of, tomorrow." She smiled, wide and said "Thank you… and can you not tell Shang? He can get overprotective…" I said "I won't, I promise. But I think you should… When you're ready. Till then I'm always more than happy to lend an ear, or whatever you need." "Thanks, you're like the sister I never had." She said, giving me a hug. "Absolutely!" When she left I looked at the paper in my hand, That is until I felt Shang's hand on mine causing my eyes to shoot up and lock on his.
"Hey… How long have you been there…?" I asked hesitantly, which caused Shang to say "Only a few minutes. Why?" "No reason… I was just waiting for you… before I looked at this…" I held up the paper, causing Shang to say. "Is that…?" I nodded and said "The doctor came while you were taking care of the dishes… He must've seen the candle lit and came to the window." Shang said "Ahh. Ready or not?" I took a deep nervous breath, before I said "Yeah. I'm ready… You?" He nodded and said "Yeah, I'm ready…" I unfolded the paper, but not before Shang's mother came in and snatched it, and unfolded it. "WHAT IS THIS?!" I felt tears in my eyes. Shang said "That is between, my wife and me." As my eyes met Shang's, I felt a immediate sense of calm. "May I have it back?" Shang asked reaching for the paper. Shang's mother refused, which only angered Shang, to the point where he snatched it from his mother, and handed it to me. "I also thought I told you to knock before you just barge in." Shang's mother's angered flared. "That's it. By tomorrow, I want you two out."
"Suits me fine!" I looked shocked to Shang, but didn't object. His mother stormed out, and I said "Why did you say it was fine? We don't have anyplace else to live!" "Leave that to me." He laid down beside me and I curled up in his chest, as we drifted to sleep.
