Later that morning, as Shang and I prepared breakfast I stared at the fire, while Shang stirred the oatmeal. "What's on your mind?" He asked. "Everything. Khans death… Yao raping me once more… The mission… The baby…" Shang said "I'm so sorry about Khan's death, and the whole Yao thing… I feel like it's my fault…" I looked at him, in shock. "Why would you think that? Khan's death is not your fault… Anything could've startled him…" I stated. "Still… The Yao situation…" I said "It's my fault… I ran off…" Shang said "But I should've followed you quicker." I said "It's not your fault."
"We'll replace Khan whenever you feel ready." Shang said. "Yao, will get what's coming to him… I promise." I placed a hand on my belly. "I just hope this mission won't have any more issues…" I whispered. Everyone came out and sat with us, while Shang served up breakfast. "Okay, everyone! Eat up! We have a long day ahead of us!" I quietly ate looking down, once everyone finished We cleaned up, and packed the carriage, "Mulan?" I looked up. "Ling. Everything Okay?" "Can I talk to you in private?" I said "Of Course…" Shang came over, and said "I get it. Go on." I stood and stepped aside with Ling. "What's going on?" I asked concernedly. "Well, it's a couple of things… 1 is I think the mission might be in jeopardy…." I said "His majesty said as long as 1 princess marries one of the prince's the alliance will be honored." Ling said "Oh Good… Because I noticed, Princess Shin Yi, and Princess Su were looking a little flirty with Chien Po and Chien Yi… Princess Mei also looked like she was getting home sick…"
I said "Thanks for the heads-up. Anything else?" Ling said "I'm also worried about Shi… She hasn't been herself all night. She's been throwing up, all night, bleeding stopped, I thought it was supposed to be at least a week, before it would stop…" I said "If it'd help I can talk to her…? Woman to woman?" "Would you, Mulan?" I saw his eyes light up. "Of course, Ling. I know she might be more open to talking to a woman, in this situation." "I'm just so worried that the dong quai didn't work… For her sake… I know she doesn't want to have the baby, but I think after she started taking it… She felt guilty…" Ling said, looking down at our feet. "I'll talk to her, I'll see where her head is at." Ling said "Thank you. I just feel helpless to help her." "I know, and there is nothing to Thank. You and Shi Yi, are family." He smiled giving me a hug as Shang came over "Sorry to interrupt… But we should probably start heading on the road…"
We headed back over to the others, Shang helped me up on to his horse before swinging up on behind me. "Everything Okay?" He asked. "Yeah. Everything's good… Ling was just worried about Shi Yi…" I whispered. We rode for half a day before, we stopped for lunch. "Hey Shi, got a second?" I asked as I went over to the lake where she was. "Yeah… What's on your mind?" Ling stepped away, while I said "How are you feeling?" Shi Yi said "I stopped taking the dong quai after the first dose…" "So the bleeding from yesterday?" I asked. "It was just part of a normal healthy pregnancy… I didn't tell Ling I didn't take any more dong Quai… I changed my mind at the last minute… I couldn't just induce a miscarriage, even if the baby was conceived by hate…"
I said "Why didn't you tell Ling?" "I was so ashamed… I mean, he's told me a thousand times he didn't care… He supported me in doing whatever I decide…" I said "Talk to him. He's your husband, and he loves you." "I don't know if he does…" I said "I know he does. The only reason he's not talking to you about it right now, is because he thought you might be more open to talking about it with a woman whose been through what you've been through before, the rape part." She hugged me tightly. "Thank you. Thank you." "Now talk to your husband…" I said, as I picked up all the fishes and carried them over to Shang. "Hey, Ling. Shi Yi's waiting…" Ling immediately ran over to Shi Yi. "Everything Okay?" I nodded as I helped Shang cook the fish. "Yeah, nothing to worry about those two. They'll be just fine." "Anything else going on?" I said "Yeah, a couple of things, but I can't really say it right now." Shang looked to the others, all in eye shot but not ear shot. "Tell me…"
I said "Okay, Shi Yi's still pregnant… She didn't take any more Dong Quai… She let Ling think she did, because she was afraid… She didn't say it right out, but having been there myself, I could tell… But also Princess Shin Yi, and Princess Su, are flirty with Chien Po and Chien Yi, and Princess Mei is homesick… I was going to tell you tonight." Shang said "I had a feeling about the Princesses… As long as one, marries it's all good. As far as Shi Yi and Ling, I'm glad they have you to confine in. Especially Shi Yi." I said "You're not jealous right? That she confines in me versus you?" Shang kissed my head lovingly, and said "Not at all, love." I smiled, as everyone came over, and sat around the fire. Ling came over and whispered "Thank you. I'm indebted to you sis." I smiled to him and said "No debt."
Over the next day, we made it to Qui Gong, and delivered Princess Ting Ting. While Shang and Ling handled the handing over the princesses, Shi Yi and I went to the town docs, while the others got us a place to stay for the night, The princesses were with Ting Ting, trying to soak up as much sister bonding time as they could. "So how did your appointment go?" I asked, Shi Yi as we headed back towards where the guys were. "Fine. Just fine. What about yours?" I said "Hey what's wrong?"
I stopped her before we even entered the palace. "Nothing Okay?! At least you don't get accused of being a harlot and a slut!" She turned away from me, ran off. "SHI YI!" I took off after her. "Mulan!" I heard Chien Po call. "Tell Shang and Ling to look for us in the woods!" I shouted as I continued running. "SHI YI! I SAID STOP!" I said grabbing her arm, making her look at me. "Just leave me!" She said, causing me to sigh. "Shi Yi, This is Me. Talk to me, please. I'm not leaving you." I stated, as she dropped to her knees sobbing, which is when I knelt down beside her. "I'm right here. Okay? I'm not going anywhere. Talk to me. What really happened at the doctors?" She laid her head on my lap, as she just cried. I rubbed her back, silently. 'I will kill that doctor, for treating her like this…' I thought. I don't know how long it was, could've been hours, for all I know it could've been hours. I got a fire going, as Shi Yi said "They said I brought this on myself… I spread my legs before I married, and the baby isn't my husbands… Pretty much told me I was a harlot, and slut…" "Shi Yi…" I started, as I rubbed her shoulder. "They're right…" "No they aren't."
The fire was going. "Ling! Over here! I think I found them! I See smoke from a fire!" Shang's voice shouted, as they ran into the area where we were. "There you are!" Shang and Ling, said as they came over to us. We looked up as they helped us up, as Shang said "Is everything Okay?" I looked to Shi Yi, as I leaned into Shang's protective arms. "I am more Okay now…" I whispered, as Ling wrapped his arms around Shi Yi. "I was worried sick about you! What the heck happened?!" Ling said, kissing her head. "I'm sorry…." She whispered. "Just the doctor said something that really upset me… That's all…" She explained, as Shang said "Well what did they say?" We walked back to the city and to a building. "The doctor implied that… I can't…" I said "I'll tell you guys, once we're settled…" We got settled in our rooms, Ling and Shi Yi were bunking with Shang and I, the princesses, in the middle, and Chien Po and Chien Yi on the end. "So what did the doctor say?" I looked at Shi Yi, who was crying once more. "The doctor implied that she's a harlot, and a slut, due to her being pregnant, and the due date, plus marriage date doesn't match up."
I explained. Shang frowned angrily, as Ling said "Shit. Shi Yi, you know that's not true… You're not." Shi Yi moved to rest her head on Ling's lap. "It's okay honey…" He soothed. "It took her hours to calm down, but maybe since you're holding her, she'll calm down faster." I commented as Shang sat on the bed, pulling me onto his lap. "I know I ran off, But I would never have forgiven myself if something happened to her." Shang said "Oh darling, it's okay." I smiled, laying my head on his shoulder. "So how did your appointment go?" Shang asked. I said "It was good. Our little one is perfect and healthy." "Good. Come on. We should get some sleep… But before we do, Mulan, I want to say that I'm so incredibly proud of you, for starting that fire. We wouldn't have found you guys if you hadn't." I said "I mostly did it to keep us warm. You guys seeing the smoke was a bonus." Shang said "Whatever the reason, I'm still so very incredibly proud of you." We snuggled up and fell asleep.
In the morning, I woke, and changed before I placed a hand on my belly. Unaware of Shi Yi getting changed. "Hey Mulan?" She asked, as she came over. "Hey. How you feeling?" "Much better… Thanks… Especially for everything yesterday…" I smiled as I said "That's what sisters are for." Ling said "Shi? You alright?" He came over, as Shang sat up, kissing my cheek, in the process. "Yeah. Much better now." She said with a small smile. "Well good. Ling why don't you get changed first, then I'll get dressed. We can get some breakfast before we head out…" Shang suggested as Ling changed, then Shang did. We went out to see the others once they have had finished getting dressed. We headed outside, and I said "What are we going to do for breakfast?" Chien Yi said "We found a little place, not far from here. She said that we could come and eat breakfast there, before we leave…" Shang looked at me, then the princesses. "What do your highnesses think?" He asked. "Let's do it. I mean If we get breakfast now, then we won't have to stop for a while, and look at your wife, and sister, They look like they could use some breakfast…"
Shang smiled and said "Alright, then it's settled." We went and got breakfast before we started on our way. I must've fallen asleep on Shang's chest, because I got startled awake when Shang's horse jolted to a stop. "Wha…" I said, as Shang hopped down. "Sorry… I didn't mean to startle you awake… We're just stopping for lunch… Figured, you'd like to stretch your legs?" He helped me down, as I said "Thanks… Yeah, that's a good idea."
I walked over to the lake. "Ling, Chien Po, Come with me to gather some wood for seats, and some fire wood!" Shang said as I turned to him "You can't just leave us all with just Chien Yi, no offense. But what If I can't fight?!" Shang said "You're right, I'm sorry. Ummm. Ling You stay with their highnesses, Shi Yi and Mulan." Once Shang and Chien Po left, I got fish while Ling and Chien Yi helped their highnesses get some fruits. "I am so so so so so SICK of eating nothing but fish…" I said, as I sat the last fish on top of the fish pile. "Shang, I think it might be a good idea, to find another source of meat… It might be better for at least the pregnant women…" Chien Yi suggested, as I saw Shang come into view. "No, it's not an issue." Shi Yi replied. "Speak for yourself…" I muttered, as Shang said "Alright… I'm confused…" Shi Yi said "Fish is fine, Shang, no one's complaining." Shang glanced, to me, and said "Okay, Let me talk to Mulan… Chien Po You take over guarding their highnesses, Ling, can you and Shi Yi start cooking up the fish?" They nodded, as Shang gestured for me to follow him, which I did silently. "What's wrong?" He asked, once we were sitting on the edge of the river bend. "I don't want to complain…" Shang waited patiently. "Tell me, what's wrong love. Please." I took a deep breath and said "I'm so sick of eating fish! Morning, noon and Night. Fish and fruit, Fruit and fish. Just the smell of the fish is making me sick."
Shang said "I'm sorry, honey… Can you eat one more meal of fish and fruit? I'll get you something, better for dinner…" I sighed and said "I lost my appetite…" I looked away. "Mulan, sweetie…" Shang said, placing a hand under my chin, lifting it, turning my head to meet his. "You know what, I'll get you something else." I said "Are you sure…?" He nodded and said "Yes." He kissed my head, as he stepped, away while I joined the others. "Hey…" I said, as I sat on the log. "Here you go." Ling said, handing me a plate of fish and fruit. "Ex… Excuse… Excuse me…" I ran to a nearby wooded area and threw up behind the trees. "Really! How rude! All she had to say was no thanks!" Shi Yi said, as Ling said "Shi Yi!" "Hey, Where's Mulan…?" Shang's voice asked. "She's over there…" Shang came over and said "Hey Feeling better?" "No…" I said, as I leaned on the tree. "I'm sorry… What can I do?" He asked, placing a gentle hand on my cheek. "There isn't much anyone can do…" Shang said "I might have something, in my saddlebag, I can make…" I shook my head. "No, Shang, don't go through all that for me… I'm still pretty nauseous… I'll just throw it back up…" "Are you sure?" He asked, his eyes searching mine. "You know how you get when you don't eat…" I sighed, and said "I know… But I seriously can't stomach anything right now…" "Alright, love…" Shang said hesitantly. We went to the others, where I went over stroking Kai's nose. "Hey Mulan?" Ling's voice interrupted my thoughts. "Hmm?" "I'm sorry… What was it that made you feel sick?" I said "Just the smell of the fish…" Ling said "I'm sorr…"
I shook my head and said "You didn't know. All's forgiven…" "If it will help… I read these fruits…" He handed a bowl towards me of freshly cut fruit. "Are supposedly really, really good for nausea… I've been giving some to Shi Yi, every chance I get, and she hasn't been nauseous as much on the trip…" I looked at him, before sighing. "Nothing helps the nausea for me, Ling, but I'll try them… Not even the herbs the doctors gave. Don't hint to Shang that I've been taking the antinausea herbs every time before we eat… I don't want him to be any more worried about me than he is." Shang's hand rested on my back. "Thanks Ling." I looked up at Shang then right to Ling, angry. "He made me… I didn't feel right about it… Sorry!" He backed away, as Shang stepped into view. "Honey… Why didn't you tell me…?" "You've been way too worried about me… and the mission… I didn't want to add more worry to your plate…" "Oh honey… I appreciate where you're coming from, But as Your husband, I'd rather know I'm taking care of you, in every single way possible, even if it'd add more worry, I don't care. You are my wife." Shang replied, caressing my cheek. "I'm sorry. I just didn't want to make anything harder on you. That's what we're supposed to do right? Help and protect each other? Share the burdens?" "True, 100%. But…" He started. "But Nothing. You took the burden of everything on the mission… I helped you as much as you let me, and you've protected all of us as much as you can. You've taken the grunt of everything… I didn't want one more thing to be added…" Shang said "I love you." I smiled, and said "I love you too."
"And thank you… For being so considerate. You know it's not easy, for me, sharing the responsibilities of duties. I should be relying on my captain, and her co captains, more." I smiled, as I took his hand. "You should be, but it's also our fault… We should be offering more assistance. The four of us, are supposed to be a team. We've not acted like a team this whole mission…" "Well we'll figure it out." Shang smiled. "We should get back on the road." Yao's gruff voice said as he approached. Shang turned and said "That's not for you to decide, Yao. It's for me. Remember your place soldier." Shang said "Have Chien Po, and Chien Yi, help put things in the carriage, and you and Ling guard their Highnesses. Try not to screw it up!" Yao bowed walking away to give the orders. Shang turned to me, and said "Eat the fruit for me, darling." I ate the fruit, as Shang got everything set to go. Once everything was set, Shang helped me up on his horse, before swinging up behind me.
We rode off. The bandits caught us, at this moment. "Chien Yi, Ling! Get the princesses to safety! Keep Shi Yi With them!" "What about…" "DOn't argue!" I yelled. We managed to kill all the Mongols, but not before one knocked me down. My eyes caught Shang's, just as the Mongolian's sword started coming down. CLASH. Yao jumped in between blocking the blow. I scooted away, as Shang appeared. "Are you alright?" He asked, as I propped myself against the wall of the pass. "I think so…" Chien Po, appeared and said "She looks pale…" I said "I'm Fine. We have…" Shang said "Chien Po's right… Umm…" He looked up and said "Crap…" I looked up, as Yao's lifeless body crumpled to the ground. Chien Po lept up, and defeated the Mongolian. Shang lifted me up, and said "Arms around my neck, honey…" He whispered, as I threw my arms around his neck. He carried me over to where the others were, setting me down gently by the water. "Situation Report Ling, Chien Yi!" Shang said, as the men approached. "Everyone's safe and sound. Your side?" Shang said "Mongolian's are defeated. Yao is dead. Chien Po should be coming over soon." "And Mulan? She looks sick…" Shang said "She'll be alright… Let's make camp here for the night… I think it'd be better… I mean we don't have any time restraints to be back by." "Shang, we still have plenty of daylight, if you want to keep going…" I said, looking up at him.
"She's right Shang… We do have plenty of time…" Ling stated, causing Shang to look gently at me, before saying "No, it's okay. I want us to take it easier on the way back… If that's alright." Ling said "Alright then. Chien Yi! Help me set up the tents." Shang said "Hey! I thought I was in charge?" I chuckled, as I said "You are, but right now, You're going to step down for a little bit, and let Ling, delegate for a little bit… You deserve a break." Shang looked at me with an eyebrow raised, before he said "Alright, alright. You win." I smirked, as Chien Po came over. "Chien Po, we're making camp here. I need…" Ling started as Chien Po said "I'll go get some firewood." I smiled, as Shang sat close to me. "I'm okay, if you wanted to try and find some other source of meat…" Shang said "I'll do it in a little bit… I want to take care of my wife, first." I smiled. "I think now, is the perfect time for me to give you my special treat, I have for you in my saddlebag. I'll be right back Okay sweetie?" He gave a smirk, before he stood and walked over to Kai, getting something from the saddlebag, before coming over to me.
