Jane's adrenaline only lasted for a few moments, she looked down at Maura and sighed, moving off of her. Kissing Maura was nice, but being up here it felt different.
"Maura, I think you were right earlier... when you said we shouldn't do this." Jane ran her hand through her hair.
Maura sat up and looked at Jane, "You're right Jane, I think we just got a little carried away."
"Plus you just broke up with Jack and being up here I realize how selfish I am. Kissing you is nice but..." Jane sighed. "Let's just go to bed, if you still want my company."
Maura smiled, "Yeah, I'd like that. Thanks Jane though, for being here."
"Like I said, you're my best friend. It's what I do," she laid down on her back, hands resting on her stomach. "Good night Maura."
"Good night Jane," Maura moved to turn off the light before moving to lay on her side facing Jane. Her friend's eyes were already closed, she knew Jane hadn't fallen asleep yet but she'd be out soon enough.
The next morning came and Jane woke up, Maura was snuggled up next to her, holding her close. Jane wasn't sure if Maura did it on purpose, but she decided that she should get out of her friend's grasp, especially when she heard Maura muttering in her sleep.
"Jack, I'm sorry... I didn't want to hurt you. Jane's my best friend. You have to understand... please don't go... I'll do anything..."
Jane frowned at Maura's words, and slowly slipped out of her arms. She was almost out of the door when she heard Maura move shuffling in bed. "Jane... did we get a call?"
"No Maura, we didn't. I just remembered that there's something I need to do this morning. I'll see you at work, alright?" Jane spoke in a serious tone.
"Jane is everything okay?"
"Yeah, everything is just fine Maura," she reassured with a small smile. And with that Jane was out of Maura's bedroom, leaving the house completely before she ran into her mother.
Maura just sat on her bed, sighing, she knew something was wrong with Jane this morning. She wanted to figure it out, last night things seemed to be okay between them. Maura got up and got ready for the day. She'd talk to Jane later.
When Jane got back to her apartment building she frowned at the visitor on her front steps. It was Jack, she really wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone.
"Morning Jane," Jack greeted standing up, arms crossed.
"Jack, why are you here?"
"I wanted to talk to you about something, about my conversation with Maura last night. She mentioned something quite interesting and I have spent all night thinking about it, even lost sleep over it. How could you do what you did with Maura, knowing she was with me, that I thought you were happy for her and I."
"It shouldn't have happened but it did," Jane frowned.
"I thought you had better control on things Jane. That you were supportive. You know that when I met Maura I sort of felt like she was the woman I was supposed to be with. When I told her I loved her and she couldn't say it back I should have known why. I should have known but I didn't. I have things I can offer her, what do you have to offer Maura? Yes a friendship, but can you give her a family, can you love her like I did and still do? So much that I'm willing to forgive her, willing to fight to get her back."
"You really are willing to forgive her for what happened?" she raised a brow, she didn't know how she felt about that or about Jack at all.
"Yes because when you love someone you'll do whatever it takes to make it work."
"Then why are you even here at my building?"
"Because I forgive you too, I'm sure it's hard becoming second place to Maura's new boyfriend. Jealousy, insecurities that you won't be as close if things become more serious between us. It's understandable you were afraid of losing her so you did what you did because of it, even if you were unaware of your intentions."
"You hardly know me Jack. Are we done here because I should get going and so should you."
Jack smirked at Jane knowing he got under her skin with his words. "Yeah, just think about what I said and know your place."
"I know where my place is Jack," Jane rolled her eyes before going up to her apartment, shaking her head. "The nerve of that guy." Here Jack was talking about wanting to get Maura back and then Maura's words from when she was sleeping. Jane felt conflicted she was upset and she was angry, mostly at herself and these feelings for her best friend. "Jo Friday, what did I get myself into?" she went to change into some work out clothes and hooked Jo's leash to her collar and with that she was out of the door.
Hours later Maura was at work finishing up the file on the latest autopsy. Her mind was all over the place today, last night when Jane stopped them from having sex, she felt sort of relieved in a way, relieved that nothing actually happened. This morning she had a confusing dream about her actually wanting Jack back, she had absolutely no reason why it came about she didn't want Jack back. If she wanted Jack at all she wouldn't have done anything at all with Jane that was more than friendly. She felt sick to her stomach whenever she thought about Jack, about how she hurt him. Maura didn't like hurting people, but that seemed to be what was happening. She didn't just hurt him, she knew she hurt Jane as well, which is why Jane left this morning.
"Maybe all I need is a bit of time away, away from it all," Maura decided after being in her thoughts for a while.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"
Maura looked up and seen Jane leaning against the doorframe. "Did I say that out loud?"
Jane nodded, "Yeah, just a bit. Are you okay?"
"I should be asking you the same thing, when you left this morning you seemed upset by something."
Jane ignored Maura's comment, "So, I take it that Jack hasn't come to see you yet? I was sure after his little visit at my apartment you'd be the next place he'd go."
"Jane, why did Jack go see you?"
"He had things he wanted to say. Just don't be surprised if you see him at some point today," Jane warned. "I was just coming to check up on you, I should get back upstairs. Duty calls."
"Are we okay Jane?" Maura asked, taking a real good look at Jane. She needed them to be okay.
"Why wouldn't we be okay Maura? If you do decide you want to get away please just give me a heads-up. Don't pull some sort of houdini act, I might need my best friend at some point. See you later," she gave a curt nod before exiting Maura's office.
Maura sighed, leaning back in her chair. Things definitely weren't okay at all.
