Used to Be So Cool
Remus was trying to have a conversation with Kingsley in the Burrow's parlour during the Burrow's Spring Equinox Party–that wasn't a real celebration, but they had decided to invent a reason to get together and meet baby Victoire for the first time. That was when he heard a familiar giggle and a pair of arms snaked around his wrist.
"You're so warm," Dora said gleefully. Too gleefully, in fact. He looked over his shoulder and recognized the silly, ecstatic smile on her silly, inebriated face.
Oh boy.
"Do you need a jacket?" Remus asked politely.
"No, just cuddles," Dora said happily before nuzzling into him very, very publicly.
Oh boy.
Kingsley took the occasion to incline his head goodbye, with a smile on his face and a quiet "have fun," before slipping away to go talk to Arthur, who was sitting next to Fleur on the sofa and rocking his granddaughter in his arms.
"Are you alright?" Remus asked, slipping Dora's arms off of him so that he could turn away and properly face her. Just as soon as he was out of her grip, she wrapped both arms around one of his and rested her head on his shoulder. It wasn't that Remus wasn't used to his wife being affectionate like this; he just wasn't used to an audience.
"Yeah," she said happily. "I'm gonna cuddle with you."
"Here?" Remus asked, taking stock of the flush on her face and the whiny, slurry tone of her voice. "Now?"
"You don't want to?" she asked, sounding hurt.
"It's not that I don't want to," Remus said to salvage the situation. He lowered his voice. "Have you been drinking?"
"Only a little bit," Dora said, weight shifting from one foot to the other impatiently. "I promise! I only had the one glass of wine…"
"Oh dear," Molly said as she walked past them, making the round with a plate of dainties. "Tonks, dear, is this your first time drinking since you had Teddy?"
"Yes," she said quietly. "Oh no, did he ruin me?"
"It's like that sometimes after you have children," Molly said, patting Dora on the arm.
"Nobody told me this," Fleur protested from the sofa.
Dora made a face.
"It used to take five shots of Firewhisky before I even felt anything," she said. "I could outdrink Mad-Eye."
"That'll be the Black in you," Sirius said from the sofa, lifting his glass in a mock toast.
Dora sighed dramatically and buried her head against Remus's chest again.
"I used to be so cool," she sighed. "Now look at me. Drunk on one glass. Absolutely sloshed. It's Hestia's bachelorette party all over again but with twelve fewer shots."
"You're still so cool," he promised her. "You're just cool with a baby now."
"I guess," she said whinily.
He wrapped an arm around her and kissed the top of her fuschia curls.
"Let's go to the kitchen," Remus said quietly. He expected that the younger Weasleys (along with Hermione and Harry, who were nothing if not honorary Weasleys at this point) would return from their impromptu Quidditch match soon and he did not think that Dora would want extra company.
"I don't want to go to the kitchen," she muttered.
"Let me take care of you," he said quietly. "We'll get you some water and something to eat, love."
"And cuddles?" she asked, looking up hopefully.
Remus sighed. Sirius was looking at him with a shit-eating grin.
"Yes," he said even more quietly. "And cuddles."
"Aye, atta girl Tonks," Sirius said, toasting once more.
So that was how Remus found himself sitting at Molly's kitchen table with his wife in his lap drinking water out of a wine glass and eating cucumber sandwiches, humming happily between bites and sips and trying to recall how exactly to make a Hangover Helping Elixir.
