As previously mentioned, there was very little that could really faze you anymore. Saving the world, learning the Gods were real, reading fanfiction about your life, etc.
And yet, still, it happens.
Still, something manages to catch you off guard.
Weiss was pregnant.
She actually had been for a little while. Long enough that she hurried along with her Saviors photoshoot because if there was too much delay, she was worried she'd be showing in the photos. Weiss wasn't fully certain at that point, but now, she was absolutely sure. Sure enough to let you all know. She was a few weeks pregnant!
You hadn't exactly *tried* to get Weiss pregnant, but yeah, there was a lot of sex in this household, so it's not super surprising. Now that the world was safe and your duties were fulfilled, it was honestly a perfect time to start a family. And with three extra mothers on board, you feel like you'll be missing the worst parts of it; sleepless nights, overwork, gross conditions, all were common over your journey, and now it'll be simple enough to share the load.
So…
Wow.
You're gonna be a father.
The weird part is, you were already ready for this. Kind of.
Yang was actually trying to get pregnant. She'd asked if you thought she was ready, and you answered. Of course, she was. She'd already basically raised Ruby, and Yang was excellent with kids. But, of course, there was a gnawing doubt in the back of her mind that made her nervous. Some reason Yang would have mixed feelings about motherhood.
Through that process of trying to have a baby, Yang was also nervous about other things. One, it wasn't any different from normal; you already had sex pretty damn often, so she'd just skipped the contraceptives. Still, after a few weeks of seriously trying, Yang was starting to worry. All of her fears about being a mom compounded with an inability to conceive. It was hard to tell if Weiss announcing she was pregnant was helping or hurting; on one hand, Yang went full mom mode, taking care of any of Weiss' needs, but also being reminded that she wasn't succeeding.
One day, two months into Weiss' pregnancy, you, her, and Yang were at home. Ruby and Blake had gone out shopping, leaving the two of you to look after the soon-to-be mother. Weiss was urging you to feel her small-but-still noticeable bump while Yang prepared lunch. Weiss' face carried an unending excitement about the future and wanting to share it with you. She had her own strained (but ultimately positive) relationship with her mother, but she had significantly less anxiety about it than Yang; you all being there to support her rather than an uncaring money-grubber definitely helped.
"Oh, Sweetie, I think I felt it move!" Weiss says, far too caught up in her excitement to remember it was way too early to feel a kick. "Come here, come here! Feel it!" She lays back and pats the cushion next to her.
Rather than correct her, you get up to move to Weiss' side and humor her. Her excitement was infectious, after all. "Gimme a–"
Your words are interrupted by the sound of glass shattering. You and Weiss look at each other, then to the kitchen.
"Yang?" you shout. "You okay?" This wasn't an infrequent event; Yang's prosthetic occasionally glitched, leading to fewer plates in your house.
No answer.
"Yang?" you shout, louder.
No answer.
You look at Weiss.
"Go on. I'm not THAT pregnant."
You stand and walk into the kitchen. You're met with Yang's massive amount of golden hair facing you. She's standing over shattered glass, but making no move to pick it up.
"Yang?" you say, starting to worry. "What's wrong?"
A weak voice ekes out, "She's gone."
What? Who's gone? What does she mean?
"Yang? Who's gone?"
Yang slowly turns around to face you. Her eyes meet yours, burning red and starting to tear up.
Nothing at this point should faze you.
And yet, still, it happens.
Still, something manages to catch you off guard.
Surrounding Yang's eyes were a wreath of flames, the characteristic glow of a Maiden. A Maiden, whose eyes and powers only transfer upon death.
To the last young woman they were thinking about.
Raven Branwen, Spring Maiden, and the mother of Yang… was dead. You don't know how. You don't know if was a Grimm that killed her, or maybe one of her many betrayals caught up with her or… there were countless reasons and people that could have caused Raven's death. But all you know is that she's dead.
Yang touches her face, feeling the tears start to pool. Her voice shakes as she asks, "W-why am I crying?" You don't give an answer, not that you have one to give. Yang rests against the counter, trembling. "I… I hate her. She abandoned me. Us. Ruby, and Dad… and Summer… Because she was scared. I hate her. Hated her." Yang rubs the tears out of her eyes, only managing to make more start to cascade down. "I shouldn't be c-crying about her."
But she should be.
You don't say anything, but, for better or worse, Raven was Yang's mother. Though their relationship was… complex, this was just evidence of one thing, perhaps the one good thing Raven ever did.
Raven's last thoughts were of her daughter. Of Yang. Of someone that, deep down, she loved. Who she was too scared to love. It wasn't redemption, it wasn't an apology, it was just proof that Yang was loved.
"She was thinking of me. The last thing she thought of was… me."
"Whose last thought?" Weiss says, entering the kitchen, only to nearly collapse onto the doorway when she saw Yang's glowing eyes. "Yang!?" You help her up immediately and set her down on a chair.
"My mo… Raven. Raven's gone."
Weiss immediately falls completely silent. Yang and Raven's relationship was complex, but BOY did Weiss complicate things further; Raven held her prisoner! You see her mull things over in her head and stay quiet, seeing nothing she could add. You don't really know what to say either. You don't think Yang has any love for Raven in her, but to know that somewhere in the world, her mother had just randomly died thinking about her…
You decide on the one thing you figure would be right in this scenario.
You hug Yang and let her fall into your shoulder. She starts to sob.
Soon after, Ruby and Blake return. You sit them down and break the news, Yang somberly showing off that she was now a maiden. Thankfully, with no more wars to be fought, she wouldn't be hunted. Still, you decide to keep this a secret, just in case it ever becomes an issue.
That night, Yang drives off on her bike. The four of you allow her solitude to deal with the feelings of what happened on her own. The next morning, you find Yang asleep in the private bedroom, clearly exhausted. It isn't until late in the day that she comes down and addresses the family. Though clearly still upset, she wore a smile.
"I have some news."
—
"We're gonna see them!" Yang says, resting on a bed. She rubs her stomach, smiling at her baby bump. "We're gonna see our baby!" Her hair seems to glow, matching her excitement.
You squeeze Yang's hand. Though you've already seen Weiss' ultrasound, seeing your physical child growing is an overwhelming feeling. Still, after the… complex announcement of Yang's pregnancy, you can't help but feel relief seeing Yang's smiling face. In the space of a few hours, she'd lost her mother but gained a… well, you don't know yet. This might elucidate whether or not it's a boy or girl. Weiss was having a boy! That fact also infected Ruby and Blake, who were starting to want their own biological children. You're already going to be a father of two in a few short months, and that number might even increase!
In Yang's words, "The sun always rises again." After dealing with gods, fate had been a weird issue, but the fact that Yang found out she was pregnant at the same time as Raven dying… Well, that doesn't FEEL like a coincidence. Life goes on as normal, but seriously? Heck, Maidendom is halfway to reincarnation already. Raven's power lived on through Yang's eyes and blood. And while you don't think she ever forgave her mother, a part of Raven is intrinsically linked to her child and her child's child.
And now you get to see that child's child.
The door opens and a doctor comes in.
Along with a… rather large man that looked a bit too rugged to be a doctor.
"Ms. Xiao Long," the doctor notes, nodding at Yang. He looks at you, opens his mouth, then shuts it.
"Eh, what's up, Doc?" Yang says, clearly high-fiving herself in her head. "Who's that?"
The doctor looks at his associate. "He's a… specialty supervisor I occasionally call in. Knowing your history and–" he pauses, looking at Yang's prosthetic arm, focusing mostly on the gun section, "–capabilities, sometimes passions tend to rise in certain… scenarios."
"Uhh…?" You and Yang both vocalize. Yang continues, "So are we seeing our baby or what?"
The doctor nods. "Yes, you're free to see your child. However, if there's anything you wish to say before you do, now would be the time."
"…wut"
"I understand. Sometimes these things have a hard time coming to light. That's why my specialty supervisor is here. He's–"
"–I don't see why you need a Huntsman here," Yang interrupts. "I don't bite :P"
The doctor sighs. "Very well. Sir." He looks at you. "I'll try to be as sensitive as possible when saying this: after running some tests, I've found that Ms. Xiao Long is pregnant with a Faunus. Seeing as you are a human, I can only leave you to draw your own conclusions."
"Is this a joke?" Yang asks.
Unimpeded, the doctor rambles, "Now, this happens more often than one may think. That's why my supervisor here is available, in case things… escalate. We have counseling avail–"
"Are you saying that I'm cheating on my husband with a Faunus?" Yang asks, eyes red. She looks at you, eyes purple and full of worry. "You know I would never do that, right? Not unless Blake counts…" She looks back at the doctor. "You should probably know we're a family of five. And that includes -no- kids. Yet, anyway. I'm already sharing him with three others."
"Oh, oh Brothers Grimm, excuse me! I'm so, so sorry. It's just, usually, the father is the one that accompanies the expecting mother. So Mr. Blake is a Faunus?"
Yang blinks.
"Blake is my wife. Our wife. This is the father. For sure, for sure."
The doctor blinks. The "supervisor," tenses up.
"I see… Then… unless your husband is a Faunus, then I'm afraid I'm confused."
"I'm not a Faunus. But *believe* me, there are five of us. She's not wanting for any other partners. I'm the only man."
You know Yang would never cheat on you. Even if it was just you and Yang without the rest of RWBY, Yang would NEVER be that person; she knows exactly how hard abandonment by loved ones feels. You know what you and her (and the rest) have is the idealized ironically-didn't-make-it-into-the-storybooks-because-censorship love fairy tales are made of, just with a lot more sex.
"I know this can be hard to accept, but–"
"–Well, what is it, anyway!? What kind of Faunus am I having?"
The doctor checks a scroll. "Well, according to tests, there are traces of Corvus DNA present around the back of the head."
"C-Corvus?"
"Blackbirds. Crows, or possibly ravens. It's too early to tell at the moment."
Yang stares directly at you. "I'm… I'm having a raven?"
Tears well up in Yang's eyes, then she bursts out laughing.
