Prompt: "My life is in the hand of my God, and you are not him." Use this quote as your inspiration, whether you include it or not is up to you."

"Foolish boy," Miraz hissed as he circled Peter. "Do you really think you can defeat me? You will die today and you and your petty alliance will be destroyed and forgotten."

Peter swallowed. "I'm not alone," he managed. "Aslan will help me."

Miraz barked a laugh. "And where is he? I see no cat come to help you. He's not here, boy. He's deserted you. You're all alone."

"No I'm not," Peter said. "He's promised to always be with me."

"Well, he broke that promise," Miraz returned. "Look around you, boy. Your pathetic army will be decimated at my word. And you are no better than they. How could you, a child, hope to win against a seasoned warrior? I'll say this, if your lion does exist, he must want you dead."

Peter glanced from side to side at the armies. His own was a fraction of the wide, organized Telmarine force.

"Your life is in my hands," Miraz went on. "I'm toying with you like a cat does with a mouse. You're trapped. There's no one to help you, no one to trust in. I can't believe that you trusted that lion in the first place. What did he ever do for you?"

Peter's head was bowed as Miraz finished. Doubts tried to creep their way into his heart. He struggled to repel them but the whispers echoed in his mind. What if he was right? What if Aslan wouldn't be there to help him this time? What if —

But suddenly that darkness was driven back as memories flooded into his mind and heart. Myriads of moments in time. Thousands of reminders of Aslan's love.

Aslan's forgiveness and sacrifice on the Stone Table and Susan and Lucy's tears when they told of his meekness and willingness to endure it. The time after that first battle, when the Lion, looking over at Peter, said nothing - yet everything with His gaze. "Well done, son. I'm proud of you." Aslan's confident nod to him as he rose from his throne for the first time. Aslan's promise to help him when he needed it.

Aslan's wisdom and guidance throughout his reign. The loving reprimands when Peter messed up, and always the forgiveness. Even when Peter made war break out, even though Aslan was displeased, he still said, "I love you." His strong voice, telling Peter that what happened at the Stone Table was not just for Edmund, but for all Narnia, including Peter. These memories, these were Peter's assurance.

And, above it all, there was Aslan's gentle whisper speaking now to his heart. "Don't be afraid, Peter. I am your shield. Do not fear Miraz or his lies, trust in me."

Peter raised his head again. "I have seen Aslan with my own eyes. He is my Lord and Protector. I know he will never leave me. You are a snake, king of treachery and I will believe in someone who died for me and never yield to you." He raised his sword.

Miraz must have seen a change in Peter's face. Fear spread across his own as he took a step back. Peter swung again, and again. A few strikes more and it was over. Just before the last blow, looking down on Miraz, Peter said, (and these words were remembered and handed down from Narnian to Narnian for centuries), "My life is not in your hands. It never was. My life is in the hand of Aslan alone, and you are not him." And as he dealt the final blow, he thought he heard a roar.
