A/N: Written for this prompt received from an anon on Tumblr: "AU student-teacher relationship where Jellal is the student?"
"Sensei."
Erza turned around and found that it was one of her students, Jellal, who called for her.
"What can I do for you, Jellal?" Other students had already left the dojo and Erza wondered if Jellal was going to ask her the same question which he had asked several times already in the past three months.
"Could I have a match with you now if you have time?"
Yes, it was the same question.
Erza looked into Jellal's eyes for a long moment as if she was trying to read his mind.
"Sure." She turned after answering him and faced him with her back again.
She was disappointed. There was another question she wished that he could ask her instead. But no. All he wanted to do with her was to test his progress in his kendo skills through matching.
They put on the full set of kendo attire again, standing face to face with their bamboo sword in their hands pointed at each other. Erza was the one who launched attack first like always and despite his effort in defending himself, Jellal soon lost 2 points. In fact, Jellal had never successfully scored even one point from his instructor in their previous matches. This really wasn't something unexpected. Jellal always knew that his chance of winning was very low since Erza was a national champion in kendo while he had only practiced kendo for two years. But he was determined to win a point from Erza in kendo no matter how many matches it took. He needed to.
In the end, Jellal lost his match against Erza for the seventh time in a row.
"You have make really good progress, Jellal." Smiling proudly, Erza gave an encouraging squeeze at her student's shoulder. "And congratulations for scoring your first point in our matches."
"It's all because of your guidance, Sensei." Jellal slightly bowed to Erza. "Thank you."
"I know you put a lot of effort in practising too. Keep up the good work. I'll see you again in next week's class." Erza gave Jellal a light pat on his shoulder before walking past him and toward the door.
"Erza, do you have anything to do on coming Saturday?"
Erza swiftly turned around to face Jellal once again. He had never before called her by her first name when they were in the dojo out of his respect for her as his kendo instructor.
"Why?" She asked; her hands began sweating as she felt nervous about what to hear from Jellal. And Jellal wasn't any calmer than her, which she could tell from his balled fists and reddened cheek.
"There's a cafe newly opened next to my shop. I heard that their strawberry cake is really tasty. I wonder if you would like to try it with me? "
Of course she wanted to try the strawberry cake, Erza thought. But more importantly…
"A-are you asking m-me out for a d-date?"
Jellal stared at her with wide eyes and Erza felt that her heart was beating so fast like it was about to jump out from her throat. If he said no, she didn't know if she could take it and she was going to find a hole to bury herself out of embarrassment.
"Yes, I'm." Jellal finally said after taking a deep breath and laughed lightly. He hadn't expected Erza to react in such straightforward way to his invitation that he was left speechless for a moment due to surprise. But her bluntness was also one of the things he liked about her. He therefore decided that he should just do thing in her style. "Will you accept?"
"Yes." This time, Erza didn't hesitate anymore in giving out her answer. She had a crush on Jellal after they had done some voluntary services for the community together in the name of the dojo about half a year ago and had been hoping for him to ask her out since then.
"Great." Jellal grinned as relief washed over him. "I was actually a bit worried that you would demand me to win you in a match before trying to ask you out again." He said jokingly.
Erza blinked confusedly at Jellal. "Why would you think this way?
Jellal blinked back at Erza and averted his gaze from her before muttering. "I…...unintentionally overheard you declining Dan saying that you would not consider going out with him unless he could score a point in a match with you. I wasn't sure if you would set a higher standard for me?"
Erza blushed furiously. She had long forgotten what she had told Dan Straight when he tried to ask her out because he had already quitted her kendo class after losing to her completely in their one and only match.
"That was only an excuse I made up to decline Dan politely." She admitted shyly. Then a sudden realization hit her. "So did you keep challenging me in the past three months because you thought I would only grant you permission to go out with me if you could score a point from me in a kendo match?"
Jellal nodded with a sheepish smile before straightening his face. "But I also enjoyed the matching with you. Those were good kendo practices and I learnt a lot from you in our matches. You are truly a wonderful Sensei, Erza."
Erza returned Jellal a confident smile after hearing his compliments for her kendo teaching skills. She took great pride in her profession."Thanks. You are a great student too. You are talented and hardworking. I can have matches with you again if you like them." Then she remembered his reason for asking for matching before. "If you still want to, of course." She added, sounding uncertain.
"Yes I do, if the matching doesn't cause you too much trouble." Jellal quickly accepted Erza's suggestion. There was no reason for him to not take the chances of seeing Erza more while improving his kendo skills at the same time. "But before our next match, could you tell me what time you would like me to pick you up on this Saturday to go to the cafe for trying the strawberry cake?"
A/N: I know nothing about kendo :P
