It was late in the afternoon and there was a high school football game going on, the home team was in the lead. Duncan Matthews, one of their best players, was running down the field on his way to making a touchdown and got tackled but still managed to get the point. Immediately after he was tackled, a redheaded girl walked up to him and took a picture.
"Hey Jean, did you get that for the yearbook?" Duncan said with a cocky grin on his face
"No these ones for my personal collection." Jean said with a laugh as she then walked away smiling while Markus, her younger brother who looked to be 16-17, tried to catch up with her
"Jean.. I sometimes wonder why you even like him." Markus said, with his green eyes fixated on her boyfriend and crossing his arms, whom he didn't approve due to his cocky and arrogant attitude
"Markus you might understand when you start dating someone." Jean said, brushing his comment off as she took more pictures
"Duncan Matthews does it again this time with a quarterback keeper, the Bayville Hawks seem to have this one wrapped with time running out." The announcer shouted over the loudspeaker, happy with his performance as some of the other team members walked over to Duncan.
"Hey, look... Tolanskys at it again." One of Duncan's friends said to him
"Hey coach can we be excused for a moment?" Duncan turned to his coach and asked, his coach then looked over at the leaderboard and saw that they were ahead.
"Yeah, just hustle back." The coach says as he shoos them off with his hands.
"Where are they going?" Markus asked Jean confused why three of the team members started walking under the bleachers
"I am not sure but we might want to keep an eye on them to make sure nothing bad happens." Jean said as they crept into an area that no one saw them. They saw Tolansky clinging to the bottom of the bleachers and taking people's wallets.
"Should we call the cops?" Markus said in a quiet tone to Jean but then the three jocks pulled him down and he hit the floor quite hard and the money flew everywhere.
"Oh hey if it ain't Toady Tolansky picking up a little spare change." Duncan said as he and his lackeys closed in on Tolansky.
"Uh hi Duncan, look I can explain." Tolanksy said backing up slowly
"Shut up frog face!" Duncan said as he picked up Tolansky by the shirt and shoved him into a wall.
"Lets crush him Dunc." One of the other guys said, when all of the sudden Scott Summers sneaks out of the shadows
"Lets not Dunc… Just chill, the wallets are still there, how about we have him give back the cash no harm done." Scott said as he slowly advanced
"Yeah yeah see here's the money." Tolansky said as he held up the money all in one hand with some cents falling out
"What do you care about, skuzo Summers?" Duncan said with a repulsing look on his face as he still held Tolansky up to the wall with one hand
"Nothing much, but I'm not crazy about three against one either so how about we settle this peacefully." Scott said as the light reflected off of his red shades
"I think me and my buds are gonna squash this slimeball, so you and your stupid sunglasses at night can just bail." Duncan said as he threw Tolansky into the mud and that angered Scott so much he almost took off his shades
"I SAID KNOCK IT OFF!" Scott yelled as he tackled Duncan and Tolansky proceeded to jump away like a frog
"He's getting away!" One of the lackys said to Duncan and both of them ran after Toad leaving Scott and Duncan alone
"Big mistake Summers!" Duncan said before he ran at Scott
"SCOTT NOOO!" Jean yelled, running to help with Markus close behind and then taking Scott by surprise Duncan punched him so hard he fell to the ground and knocked his shades off.
"SCOTT!" She yelled again as the shades hit the floor and an explosive red beam of energy came out of Scotts eyes and hit Duncan and a propane tank. The propane tank caused an explosion and everyone ran away except the mutants and Duncan.
Not too much later the cops and firefighters showed up and even shorter after that so did Charles Xavier with Ororo Munroe aka Storm. Jean walked up to where Scotts shades were at.
"Hmmm... It's too hot to touch, at least with my hands." Jean said as she used her telekinesis to lift some of the debris off of his glasses and then picked up the shades
Jean and Markus then walked up to Scott who was crouching on the floor and shutting his eyes as tight as he could.
"Are you okay?" Jean said as she put his shades back on his face and the first thing he saw was Jeans beautiful face in red tint
"Jean.. Markus... Oh wow I-" Scott said as Jean started to shush and calm him down a bit.
"We better split." Jean said as she looked over as Duncan who was with the cops and EMT's.
"Take it easy son try not to move." One of the men said as he carefully took off Duncans helmet.
"What happened here?" another one of the men said to Duncan as he grunted in pain
"U-u-um my head, can't remember." Duncan said as one of the EMT's put a flashlight to his eyes
"Concussion... He's been hit hard." the EMT said to the police officer. The officer then looked over at the fire and began to think
"Hmmm Looks to me like-" He started to say before Xavier used his telepathy on him to make sure he did not find out about Scott
"Eh uh uh course.. Must have been a leak in that propane tank." The police officer said why Xavier sat in the corner happy he threw him off track. Markus was standing next to the Professor as Jean walked over to where Duncan was being loaded onto a stretcher.
"Duncan are you alright?" Jean said to Duncan in a concerned voice
"Hey Jean, yeah you know me... Skull-like concrete." Duncan said as he stupidly used his hand to knock on his head and to no surprise he cringed at the pain.
"Awww you poor baby." Jean said as she followed Duncan into the ambulance and Markus smirked at what Jean said
"Uh, thanks really, you know." Tolansky said to Scott who was clearly irritated
"Yeah." Scott said as he walked away only saying one word to Tolansky
Xavier motioned for Markus to get in the car with him and Storm since Jean was his ride to the game, so Markus obeyed and got in the front seat.
"Things are under control for now... but we better hurry. I got a train to catch." Xavier said as Storm drove off.
Later at the train station...
Ororo, Xavier and Markus were in the train station. Storm was looking around for the person they were picking up while Markus was waiting and Xavier sat there quietly with his hands together. A blonde teenage male walked out of the train with a few bags.
"Kurt?" Ororo said as she gestured to him
"Not Kurt... this is." Xavier said as he used his head to gesture to a shady looking figure wearing a big jacket with a hood that was casting a shadow over his face.
At a tiny market in the middle of nowhere...
A man in a brown leather jacket on a motorcycle pulled up to the market.
"Hmmmm trouble at home." The man in the leather jacket said as he looked at a news paper being displayed
"Yuuh ya want that paper?" The store clerk asked the mysterious man
"That's why I am holding it bub." The mysterious man said to the store clerk as he walked up to the checkout counter.
"A bottle of water too... cold." He said as he began to read the paper and dropped some money on the counter
"Warm weather for this time of year." The store clerk said, trying to make friendly conversation.
The mysterious man then grabbed the bottle of water and three knives came out of his hands and he cut the whole top of the water bottle off and chugged the whole thing in no time flat.
"Ahhhh recycle that would ya." The mysterious man said as he slammed the now empty bottle back on the counter and walked out of the store and back to his motorcycle. A little bit out from the market there was a big hairy man with long hair and very sharp canines in a tree watching him and growling.
Back at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters...
"Give it up Jean, it's hopeless." Scott said as he knocked on the bathroom door.
"I'll be done in a second." Jean said as she brushed through her long red hair
"Come on, we're gonna be late." Scott said clearly getting annoyed
"Almost done." Jean said as she used her telekinesis to bring a hand held mirror in front of her face.
"Look, you want me to blow this door… Eh, down." Scott was saying before Jean opened the door and he was thrown back by her beauty (even though she looks the same as every other day)
"So are we going or what?" Jean said as she used her hand to lift up his chin and he smiled
"We're going out, professor!" Scott said as he and Jean headed for the door
"Just a moment you two come here I'd like you to meet someone, this is Kurt Wagner he arrived late last night." Xavier said as he sat in his wheelchair with the mysterious boy in the cloak standing next to him and Markus in the corner who had met him last night on the way back to the mansion but still wanted to be there when he met Jean and Scott.
"Hey Kurt this is Jean I'm Scott how ya doing?" Scott said as he smiled and offered his hand for a handshake but Kurt backed away showing a bit of his face which appeared to be blue
"Kurt you're among friends here." Xavier said trying to encourage him to feel more at home
"Kurt these are the people I was telling you about on the way here last night." Markus said as he walked behind Xavier. Kurt then cautiously pulled his hand out of his pocket and extended it to Scott for the handshake. When he shook Scott's hand it revealed his blue hands that only had three fingers which confused Scott and then Kurt quickly pulled his hand away again.
"Hello" Kurt said briefly as Xaviar then cleared his throat
"I was just telling Kurt how I set up this institute for gifted youngsters, youngsters whose gifts are not always an asset, right Scott?" Xavier said as he then looked at Scott with a look of disappointment
"Uh so you heard about last night?" Scott said while he slightly shuffled in his place
"Not too difficult, it was on all the news channels." Xavier said as he stared down Scott
"It was a bad situation, and there was an accident, I'm sorry." Scott said as he scratched his head, feeling guilty
"I know, fortunately no one was badly hurt and the true cause was not discovered but you must be more careful Scott!" Xavier said raising his voice a bit
"C'mon professor, I'm packing a bazuka behind each eyeball. What do you want from me?!?" Scott said as his anger started rising
"Control Scott! That's why you're here to learn, that's why you're all here. Scotts eyes emit a destructive optic blast beam." Xavier exclaimed
"OH cool." Kurt said as he finally took his hood off to reveal his blue hair and blue skin on his face as well.
"What about you Kurt got a special gift that got you here?" Jean asked Kurt as she turned to him
"Yeah Kurt, you never told me yesterday on the way back." Markus said curiously, then Kurt out of nowhere disappeared
"Maybe..." Kurt said as he reappeared somewhere different in the room immediately after he disappeared
"WOAH." Scott, Jean, and Markus all said in unison with looks of awe on their faces
"I'll be helping Kurt get settled in so we can talk more tonight." Xavier said with a smirk on his face
Later at Bayville High...
Todd Tolanksy sat in a waiting area for the principal's office while moving his feet around constantly.
"Mr. Tolanksy." A middle aged woman with glasses and a look of pure disinterest called. He then stood up and walked into her office with a slouch. She then sniffed the air after we walked in and made a face of disgust and she waved her hand to try and get rid of the smell he brought with him.
"Excuse me a moment while I open a window." She said as she walked over to the window and he jumped like a frog onto the chair in front of her desk.
"There, now Toad shall we talk about your new friend Scott Summers." She said to him with a smirk on her face
"What about him, he's cool, heck if it wasn't for him then jocks would've stomped my skull flat." Toad said as she used his hand to knock his head a bit
"Yes well Summers as you noticed has special powers, there are others like him we need to know more... much more." The principal said as she put her hands on his shoulders
"Aw look I don't wanna--" Toad was saying as he was suddenly interrupted by a scream
"SILENCE! You do as you are told UNDERSTOOD?!" She then said as she turned into a huge purple dragon
Back at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters...
"Woah this bedroom is mine?" Kurt said as he walked around the room with a look of awe on his face.
"Hm of course Kurt that's why your parents sent you to us because they knew you would be happy here." Xavier said with his hands put together as they usually are
"Happy? How can I be happy when I look like this, I scare people." Kurt said as he looked in the mirror and touched his face sadly hating how he looked
"Hm I have a surprise for you Kurt, put this on." Xavier said he pulled a watch out of his jacket and handed it to Kurt. He then took the watch from Xavier and put it on his wrist and as soon as he did his appearance changed from a tail and blue skin to no tail and white skin. It even changed his clothes from the big coat he was wearing to something someone his age would wear to school.
"I can't believe it! I'm normal." Kurt said as he looked in the mirror again
"Of course your normal Kurt, but not because of that machine." Storm explained to Kurt
"Storm is right Kurt, normal is what you truly are never think otherwise this is just a disguise, a disguise so that you won't be persecuted by those who do not understand your gifts." Xavier said as he moved his wheelchair next to Kurt and then turned the watch back off so that Kurt was the same he was before.
"I understand the professor, but nonetheless you rule!" Kurt said as he turned the watch back on and fisted his hand as he said it with a huge smile on his face. Seemily pleased, Xaviar and Storm both left the room with smiles on their faces. Right after the pair left Kurt opened up the box that was on the bed which revealed a new team suit for him with a big X on it.
Bayville High as the bell rings for lunch...
"Hey see you in the cafeteria." Markus says to Scott as he grabs his lunch and walks away with a few other people
"Just grab my lunch, save me a seat." Scott says as he grabs his lunch out of his locker and shuts it only to find Todd Tolansky right behind him
"Yo Summers." Toad said as he quickly got around Scott
"Huh." Scott says baffled by what he is seeing
"What's up?" Toad says as he jumps onto Scotts locker, Scott then looks around to make sure that no one was near
"That's quite a jump." Scott says regaining his composure
"Like it, surprised you can see it through the smokies of yours here let me help." Toad said as all of the sudden his tongue sprung out of his mouth and he grabbed Scotts glasses with them which made Scott angry and he immediately shut his eyes as tight as he could
"What's the matter, Summers? You afraid to uh open your eyes." Toad said as he waved around his shades with now had slime all over them
"Obviously we both know what will happen if I do, now give me back my shades before I go nuclear." Scott said as he had some glowing coming from his eyes probably because of how angry he was getting with Toad.
"You got it." Toad said as he used his tongue again to give them back making the shades even more slimy
"AAAGH." Scott said as he caught the shades
"Well as you can see you and I have something in common." Toad said while making big arm movements
"Yeah now we're both slimy." Scott said as he wiped the slime off his shades
"Nope... I mean we're not like other people." Toad said as he finally jumped down from the lockers.
"And your point is?..." Scott said as he turned around to face Toad again
"I just wanna talk you know, get to know each other better." Toad said as he jumped again on the lockers almost hitting Scott if he had not moved in time
"You know, maybe do lunch." Toad said as he extended his tongue again but this time ate Scotts lunch whole including the brown paper bag
"I'll think about it." Scott said as he started to walk away
"Sure, you think about it, Summers I got other stuff to do." Toad said as he hopped off the lockers again
Back at the Mansion...
Xavier was sitting in a hallway in his wheelchair reading a book when all of the sudden an alert went off. Xavier looks up and starts wheeling his chair towards the wall when it starts moving up and reveals another room which he goes into. He pulls up to the computer and presses a button which reveals a red dot on a map.
"Hmm so out in the open." Xavier says as the phone starts to ring and he answers
"Hello Scott." Xavier said without Scott saying anything and there was no caller ID
"Man professor, you know it always weirds me out when you do that." Scott says when Xavier answers the phone
"Sorry, what are you calling about?" Xavier said kinda amused at Scott's reaction
"One of the students here, he's uh... kinda like us." Scott said not sure how to describe Toad
"Yes, Todd Tolanksy." Xaviar said as he grabbed a helmet nearby that was attached to the computer in front of him
"You know him?" Scott said kinda confused
"Cerebro just got a reading, he must be using his powers openly now." Xavier said as he looked at the screen
"Anyway he's not the kinda guy I'd want to share a room with, I mean to put it bluntly he's got the personal hygiene of a dead pig." Scott said to Xavier as he imagined having to share a room with him and shuddered
"We cannot turn our backs on anyone Scott you know that." Xavier said kinda disappointed in Scott for wanting to turn his back on a fellow mutant
"Yeah I know so should I bring him in?" Scott asked as he curled the phone cord with his finger
"No need Scott, speak with you later." Xavier said as he hung up the phone
"What's that thing Professor?" Kurt said as he walked in with his brand new team suit on
"This thing is Cerebro, it detects other mutants, that's how I found you." Xavier said as he gestured to Kurt
"So this guy is one of us?" Kurt said as he pointed to the video of Toad playing on the screen
"That remains to be seen." Xavier said plainly
"Storm." Xavier tried to say to Ororo even though she was several rooms away even floors in the mansion
"Yes Professor?" Storm responded while she watered her plants through tiny rain clouds
"I wonder if you could audition someone for me." Xavier said as Storm then briefly stopped watering and walked out of the room
Outside of Xavier's Institute...
"Heh cake." Toad said as he grabbed the bars of the gate and then jumped completely with ease over it and ran closer to the mansion. Storm then opens the doors on one of the upper levels of the mansion and flies high up in the air while she is in her team suit. As Toad started to get closer he noticed her flying above him and clouds started to gather, and lightning struck close and then the rain started to pour on him.
"Oh now that is just freaky." Toad said as lightning struck the ground right next to him making a jump as far away as he could. Storm kept aiming the lightning at him making him screech.
Back inside the Mansion...
Kurt walked into the front room and noticed that there was suddenly a huge storm outside which he thought to be suspicious. All of the sudden the doors flung open and Toad came screaming in and landed on Kurt causing them both to fall and start rolling around the room, but then both stood up and landed in fighting positions.
"Woah what are you heh some kind of ratty plush toy?" Toad said as he finally got a look at Kurt while they both started circling each other when Kurt got a whiff of Toad
"The names Nightcrawler and at least I don't really like unwashed lederhosen." Kurt said as he used his hand to plug his nose
"YOU BLUE FURRED FREAK!" Toad said as he jumped at Kurt but at that same moment Kurt teleported away and Toad landed in a pile of black smoke.
"Huh?" Toad then said confused
"As you say in America Neiner neiner neiner." Kurt said as Toad looked up and saw Kurt on one of the lights hanging from the ceiling
"That aint gonna help you boy!" Toad said as he jumped up to the light but at the same moment Kurt jumped down from it
"You're so slow!" Kurt said as he started to climb a wall and continued laughing
"GRRRRRRR." Toad said as he chased after Kurt
"You couldn't catch flies on the windshield!" Kurt said as he jumped from wall to wall
"Fight like a man!" Toad countered back with as Storm then flew back into the mansion through the still open doors
"Yes Tolansky is indeed gifted, he could be one of us." Xavier said coming out of nowhere
"Sometimes Charles, I feel your good heart blinds even you from the truth." Storm said as they both listened to Kurt and Toad bicker and then jumped down the hallway and broke several things which finally got Xavier to step in
"This test is over! Todd Tolanksy does have a special gift, he is welcome to join us if he so desires." Xavier said as he got closer to the two
"Only thing I DE-SI-RE is a blue boy's fuzzy head!" Toad said
As he jumped at Kurt and used his tongue to wrap around his wrist bringing them both down so Kurt teleported them somewhere else which worried both Xaviar and Storm. When Kurt and Tolansky reappeared they dropped into some weird metal room.
"AAAAHHHH!" They both screamed as they fell to the cold floor and a red light started to glow
"What's in here, where are we!" Kurt said quite confused
"You asking me for you brought us here." Toad said as he started to dust himself off
"Ugh I think I'm about to regret it!" Kurt yelled as one of the guns turned on and started aiming at them
"Scott, Jean, Markus, Nightcrawler and Toad teleported into the danger room!" Xavier said to the three of them as they were all getting into their costumes
"Oh man, the Danger Room has automated defenses!" Scott said worried as he looked at Jean and Markus
"It'll attack them with everything it's got!" Jean said as she began to run to the danger room
"I swear we never get a break do we?" Markus said sighing as he ran after Jean
"Get in there now!" Xavier yelled as Scott grabbed his other boot and put it on as he ran after Jean and Markus
Meanwhile in the Danger Room...
"AHHHHHH!" Toad screamed like a little girl as one of the guns shot at him when finally Scott, Jean, and Markus arrived and as soon as they got there started making plans on who's helping who
"I've got the cannons you and Markus keep them clear of the tentacles!" Scott said ready to jump into action
"On it!" Jean said as she flew into the air
"Copy that." Markus said as he then ran after Jean to help with his own psionic abilities. Scott started blasted the canons with his red beams and as Kurt was about to get caught by one of the tentacles but Jean used her powers to lift him into the air away from it
"You are an angel." Kurt said as he looked at Jean thankful for saving him
"Hehe on occasion how bout you are a demon." Jean said joking with Kurt
"OW I just bought that!" Toad screamed as he barely got clipped when all of the sudden two walls started to close in on him and he almost got squished when Markus showed up and used his telekinesis to hold the door open until Toad could escape.
"Tolansky over here!" Scott screamed as he blasted another cannon. Xavier and Storm both showed up in the little booth inside the danger room and as Xavier rushed up to the control panel Storm watched with worry
"Security code override priority X voiceprint Charles Xavier!" Xavier said in a hurry so that no more damage was done
CONFIRMED
"Ah now I get it, it's a training area! Vatch, I just unplugged this and AHHH!" Kurt screamed
As when he unplugged the machine it just got angrier and started throwing him around and shot Scott, Markus, and Toad throwing them all into the wall. Storm then shows up and destroys it with lightning and the room shuts down finally and Storm slowly floats down to the floor.
"Forget this man I've seen enough, I am out of here." Toad said as he jumped out of the room as fast as he could
"Tolansky! Uhh uh sorry Professor I couldn't stop him" Scott said standing up while he was in a bit of pain
"It's alright Cyclops he wasn't ready to be one of us." Xavier said as he looked down from the booth at him
"I blew it too, Professor. I'm sorry you've been wonderful but I guess I-I just don't belong here." Kurt said as he teleported away feeling awful for what he did
"Nightcrawler, wait!" Xavier said hoping to stop him
"No sweat Professor, I'll take care of it." Scott said as Xaviar nodded and Scott ran after Kurt
"I'm fine, thanks for asking." Markus said sarcastically said as he tried to get up but his chest was hurt
"Oh you big baby, come on." Jean said as she got his arm over her back to pick him up
"Thanks, sis." Markus said thankfully
Toad then crashed out of the window and landed on a table, which broke and when he stood up to run there was a big man with knives coming out of his hands standing there waiting for him.
"Going somewhere bub?" The big man asked as he raised one his hands threateningly and glared at him as he sniffed in
"No Logan! Let him go." Xavier said from the window as Logan looked back down at Toad and retracted the knives, and he moved out of the way and used his hand to let him know he was off the hook.
"I came back here cuz I smelled trouble brewin." Logan then inhales again. "Course maybe it was just a stinky boy there." He continued
"I wish it was, welcome home old friend we've missed you." Xavier said with a smile as Logan then nodded at him and smiled back
Kurt reappeared in the room where they keep the jets for missions
"What is thus?" Kurt said as he looked up at the Jet and then quickly turned around to the sound of the door opening
"The SR 77 blackbird... Twice as fast as the SR 71 and with three times the range and firepower, it's nice eh." Scott said as he walked up behind Kurt
"Sehr gut! Is it yours? Please tell me, you get to fly it." Kurt said as he checked out the blackbird
"It's ours and if you stick around for a while I'll show you how to pilot this bad boy, so what do you say, you wanna be part of our team?" Scott said as he looked at Kurt with a smile and put his hand on Kurts shoulder
"Me? But I almost got you killed a few minutes ago." Kurt said as he looked at the floor in shame
"Yeah... Don't do that again, but look we all mess up sometimes I know I do, that's why we're all here to learn not to make mistakes like that, that's why we'd like you to stay." Scott said looking at Kurt with the most sincere of looks
"And you don't mind... the way I look?" Kurt said looking up at Kurt
"Dude, just don't hassle me about my shades and we'll call it even." Scott said with a laugh
"We have a deal then." Kurt said smiling to Scott
"Welcome to the team, come on I'll show you where they hide the sodas." Scott said as he and Kurt walked out of the room
Bayville High, the next day...
"UGH I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS YOU WERE ACTUALLY INSIDE AND YOU RAN AWAY!" The principal screamed at Toad
"Hey I freaked so sue me I did what I could." Toad said as he turned around in the chair to look at her as she paced around the room
"And no doubt the good Professor wiped your mind so you can't remember anything!" She screamed as she turned around again to look him in the eyes as he shook his head no
"GET OUT!" She screamed as she opened the door and pointed at it, she then screamed and turned into a blue lady with red hair and a white dress and gloves. As she went to pick up the fallen chair the room started to shake.
"Don't be so hard on the boy Mystique, we don't want to thin our ranks now do we." Said a mysterious voice which seemed to scare Mystique
"Uh no sir I'll be more careful." Mystique said she leaned back on her desk
"Mind yourself, remember this is only the beginning." said the mysterious voice as a silhouette of a man in a red cape and helmet appeared
