A/N: Set shortly after Wake the Dead. Slowly getting back into the swing of things.
Shayera sat in the corner of the cafeteria; attempting to stay as quiet as possible and out of the way of the others. Since her return the welcome she had was a lot less than warm. Hell even cold wouldn't compare. Though she expected as such.
"Yeah that's her." She heard a voice sharply whisper as two members walked by. She didn't even care to look up to see who it was. At this point it didn't matter.
"So you're Shayera." A younger, female voice said.
Shayera sighed and frowned as she looked up. "What do you-" She immediately stopped her verbal flay she had pre-prepared in her mind for moments like this. Especially when she saw the icon 'S' symbol staring back at her.
The young girl immediately sat right next to her, invading Shayera's personal space and comfort. "You are Shayera right? Well the wings sorta make it obvious."
"Yes," Shayera slowly replied as she moved a bit from the Argoan.
"Kara Kent or otherwise known as Supergirl." Kara thrust her hand out to her. "But you can call me Kara."
Shayera looked at Kara's hand and then back to Kara before hesitantly shaking it. "You already know who I am."
"I can't believe you're finally back Hawkgirl. I really-" Kara abruptly stopped as Shayera held a hand up.
"Don't call me Hawkgirl."
Kara tilted her head. "Why? Oh is it Hawkwoman now? Outgrew the Hawkgirl gig?"
Shayera glared at Kara. "No."
Kara gulped as she nervously chuckled. "Why? It sounds cool."
"I think you can guess why."
"Right..." Kara sat there for a moment in an awkward silence. "So...um...Clark told me how cool you were."
"Were?" Shayera raised an eyebrow. "Clark doesn't think I'm 'cool' anymore?"
"I didn't mean it like that," Kara said rather flustered. "I meant that you still are cool but I was referring to how Clark told me about it in the past. Not that you aren't cool now. You're still super cool. You're my favorite. Well second favorite next to Clark of course."
Shayera smirked as the young woman got herself worked up. "I know what you meant Kara. You sure you want to talk to me? Most people don't. Plus I might be a bad influence on you."
"Of course I want to talk to you! I mean yeah I met Wonder Woman and stuff but Clark always said I remind him of you. He says I'm always too impulsive and act before I think. I think that's why he made Lantern my teacher. He so boring and acts more like a warden. Do you remember how boring he is? He's always scolding and patronizing me about how headstrong I am and never listen or make plans."
Shayera frowned. "I think I can remember. Don't you have things to do? Monitor duty? Crowd control? Destroying things by accident?"
"Nah," Kara waved her off. "I got the day off so far. You know what would be cool?"
Shayera remained silent but noticed how expectantly Kara looked at her. She sighed, "No, what would be cool?" Honestly she just wanted the young girl to go away already.
"You should come on a mission with me and Lantern. It would be so much better. I can have someone there that actually gets me. Plus you can tell Lantern to back off of me for once and let me do what I want. My way works too...sometimes. Plus we fight the same way. Hit first and ask questions later. It would be perfect."
Shayera rolled her eyes thinking of all the reasons why that proposal was the worst idea she had heard in recent weeks. Besides the thought of working with John, the mere idea of her and Kara being allowed on a mission together was laughable. There was a good chance the two of them would leave many people with unnecessary bruises even if the mission would most likely be a success. "Look, Kara, you're a really nice girl but I don't think you get it. You shouldn't hang around me."
"Why? Does this have to do with the Thanagarian Invasion? Cause if it does then you have no worries. I honestly held my own during that plus Clark told me how much you helped the League out in the end. He told me the whole story. It sorta reminds me of when Clark got brainwashed by Darkseid."
"So you don't have a problem being around me?
Kara shook her head, "Nope."
Shayera sat there silently for a moment. "Maybe, if GL is too busy to go on a mission with you, I can go in his place so that you don't get stuck with nothing to do. How's that?"
Kara practically squealed in her seat and she hugged her. "Thank you Shayera!"
Shayera let out a low groan as her personal space was violated once more by the young Argoan. "Yeah...you're welcome."
Unbeknownst to the two the resident Green Lantern had entered the cafeteria and watched them as their conversation took place. John smirked. He knew he liked training Kara because of her similarities with Shayera. He also knew Superman had done this on purpose. The similarities in their personalities was the exact reason Clark had done this. He knew how much John missed Shayera. John didn't know whether to be appreciative of Clark's attempt or to be annoyed by it.
Though John couldn't help but let out a small chuckle as Shayera got up to leave only for Kara to follow her like a lost puppy; her mouth moving a mile a minute. He saw the exasperated look on the Thanagarian's face as she was obviously trying to ditch Supergirl. Though he noticed once her back was to Kara, that she smiled. John himself smiled when he saw that. That was one of the rare real smiles he saw from her since she rejoined a few weeks ago. He also knew this was the first time someone, other than Wally, actually made a conscious effort to even try to talk to her. John made a mental note to remember Kara's actions when she begged to fly the Javelin next time they went on a mission.
Kara grunted as she kicked John's legs out from under him. She looked rather proud of herself as she put her hands on her hips and rather smugly smiled. "How was that?"
John rubbed the back of his head as he sat up. "Where did you learn that dirty move?" Though with the smug look on her face, John already knew who taught her that. In recent weeks, Kara was proving to be more smug and impulsive than normal. John had a suspicion it was due to her new training partner.
"Shayera." She quickly replied and John rolled his eyes. He knew it. "She agreed to spar with me sometimes. Well whenever she has time. She's so fun. I mean yeah I have fun training with you too Lantern...sometimes...but Shayera makes it so much more lively. We trash talk each other the entire time. She told me stuff I can say when I fight to rile the bad guys up."
At that, John frowned as he stood. Apparently Shayera hadn't changed as much as he thought. "You aren't repeating one thing she taught you to say. Do I make myself clear?" Knowing Shayera, nothing she taught the young heroine was probably suited even for adult ears. "You repeat one thing and I'll tell Clark."
Kara sighed and then pouted. "Spoiled sport, Shayera warned me you would say that."
John raised an eyebrow. "Really? What else has she said?"
"Nothing much, just some girl talk," Kara said to him but then slyly smirked. "Do you really fold your socks?"
John let out a frustrated groan. As happy as he was to have Shayera back...she was still a horrible influence.
