I'm back at it again. with all this social distancing stuff because of the coronavirus I should have a lot more time to write. Anyway hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: I don't own Pokemon.
Without hesitation May sent out her new partner Lotad. Brendan sent out Ralts in response.
"I don't think this is going to be much of a battle. I outnumber you by one and all three of them are powerhouses." Brendan gloated.
"I think you should worry about yourself." May said with a wink.
Lotad hit Ralts with astonish causing her to flinch.
"Alright Lotad! Water gun now!" She ordered.
Lotad shot a stream of water at Ralts who was now just a little angry.
"Give him hell Ralts." Brendan ordered.
Ralts used confusion to sent Lotad flying into a street lamp. Brendan was surprised to see that Lotad was pretty unfazed. With another astonish and water gun Ralts was down for the count.
"Haha! Not so much of a psychic terror now is she?!" Roxanne who had just rolled up on the scene laughed.
Brendan rolled his eyes.
"It's only because astonish is super effective and it made her flinch...twice." he explained sending out Poochyena.
"Don't let the mutt intimidate you. Show him girls can be strong Trainers too." Roxanne cheered.
May rolled her eyes too. She wasn't a fan of Roxanne's belittle all men feminism.
"Alright let's keep the battle going. Howl Poochyena!" Brendan yelled.
Howling into the sky got Lotad's attention who decided on his own to shoot water gun. Poochyena still looked pissed just wet now. He bit down on Lotad with the force of at least two other Poochyenas and flung him into the air. However even after all that abuse When Lotad landed he was still holding on. Both Brendan and May were very surprised.
"Where the hell did you get that thing?! It's made of fucking steel. No wait steel Pokemon are weaker." Brendan said in pure respect.
"Alright Lotad put everything you got left into this water gun!" May cheered.
Pouring every ounce of strength he had left Lotad fired a larger and more pressurized water gun. Hitting Poochyena with the force of a high pressure power hose the attack sent him skidding across the street. Poochyena got up and finally took the watery behemoth down.
"Hold on I'm stopping this fight right now! Brendan is in violation of battle regulations." Roxanne interrupted.
"Do you ever shut up about rules? What is it this time?" Brendan asked quite annoyed.
"May's Lotad drained her energy in order to pull that last attack off." Roxanne explained pointing at the tired looking May.
"Yeah I'm aware of that. Treecko has done it before. What's that got to do with me?" He questioned.
"That should have taken Poochyena down but instead he looks like he just got hit with a regular attack. That's because you protected him with your Aura which May can't do." She further explained.
Brendan still had a clueless look on his face causing Roxanne to sigh.
"Norman really never taught you about Aura?" She asked.
"My dad has a knack for forgetting very important things. More specifically telling me important things." Brendan answered.
"Very well. All people and Pokemon have a life energy known as Aura. Not too much is known about Aura itself but the Pokemon Professors are piecing it together. Pokemon are born Aura Users and it was just recently discovered by Professor Kukui in the Alola Region, that it's how Pokemon use their moves. He also discovered that Pokemon will harness their trainer's Aura which is why Trainer Pokemon are more powerful than wild." Roxanne began explaining.
"Yeah that makes sense. Then in desperate situations a Pokemon will take their trainer's Aura to get stronger but this puts a strain on both Pokemon and Trainer." Brendan added.
"Correct and that's what we just saw Lotad do. What's actually happening is the Pokemon is taking in all the Aura they can from their Trainer and in a sense burns it up for strength. An Aura User, which is a person with the ability to manipulate Aura doesn't have to worry about this. Aura Users amplify and control their Aura so you can actually gauge how much of your Aura you channel into your Pokemon and since you control it you can actually take your Aura back instead of it getting used up in the attack or defense." Roxanne finished explaining.
"Oh I see now. While we're getting the same effect May is straining herself while I can do it effortlessly." Brendan pieced together.
"Exactly. That's why it's illegal for an Aura User to use Aura against a regular Trainer. If May keeps fighting like this she could die." Roxanne said more serious than usual.
Brendan's eyes widened in shock and he immediately powered down.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know." He apologized.
"Don't worry about me." May said in between breaths.
"Are you crazy?! I just said you could die." Roxanne yelled.
"I'm Brendan's rival. If I can't use Aura that's on me for being too weak. How can I help push him if he has to go easy on me? Don't you dare pull your punches Brendan! Come at me with everything you got!" May yelled with a scary look of determination in her eyes.
There was a moment of silence as Brendan and May stared each other down. Then Brendan cracked a smile and powered up again.
"Of course. I wouldn't disrespect your determination by going easy on you." He said ready to continue.
Roxanne was dumbfounded that he just ignored more regulations but before she could say anything May caught her eye. May burst in her own Aura.
"Well I'll be...you have the affinity for it too. The determination you felt to not disappoint your rival must have awakened it." She said in awe.
May sent out Torchic and with an Aura powered ember engulfed Poochyena in flames. Once they burned out Poochyena was down for the count. Treecko had already let itself out and was fired up.
"Use your own judgment Treecko. I'll focus on the Aura." Brendan said catching Treecko by surprise.
Usually Brendan is pleading for Treecko to listen to him but this time he's putting his trust in Treecko's judgment. Treecko couldn't help but grow an ounce of respect for him...but only an ounce. He jumped into the air and got ready. Brendan channeled almost all his Aura into him and Treecko began firing bullet seed at the rate of a belt fed machine gun. May channeling her Aura let Torchic dodge and slash at the same speed coming out with only a few scratches. Torchic then started a volley of ember thinking that it will end it. However Treecko was extremely fast especially when buffed by Aura so he ended unscathed. Both continued to clash relentlessly.
"Whoa...they're fighting so ferociously. They truly feel their trainer's spirit." Roxanne observed.
They clashed again and this time a bright white light blinded all around. After a little bit everyone could see again and the two battling Pokemon were not the same. Grovyle and Combusken stood ready to fight.
"Wow. They both evolved. Kick his ass Combusken!" May cheered for her newly evolved friend.
Combusken began a flurry of kicks but Grovyle was able to easily dodge each one. The two continued to clash relentlessly until May fell to her knees. Combusken was no longer powered by Aura which allowed Grovyle to land a finishing hit.
"May?! Are you ok?" Brendan asked rushing over to her.
May was panting and looked ready to fall over.
"She may have awakened her Aura but Lotad still majorly drained her before she did. She's just exhausted." Roxanne explained.
"I'll be fine Brendan...I'll meet up with you guys in Petalburg once I rest a bit." May reassured him.
Brendan helped May to the Poke Center. She took a seat and immediately passed out. After healing his Pokemon Brendan and Roxanne began the trip to Petalburg. The walk was quite awkward for a bit. Roxanne refused to even try to make small talk.
"You know if you were being any colder I'd have to bundle up." Brendan joked trying to break the ice.
"Shut it. I'm doing this because I lost the bet. I still don't like you." She shot at him.
"Aww really? I thought we were becoming best friends." Brendan sung sarcastically.
Roxanne just glared at him.
"Ha! See? That was a much softer death glare then last time. You're warming up to me." Brendan teased.
"I hate you." She said unable to hide her embarrassment.
They made it to Petalburg and headed to the Gym.
"Hey how's it going Brendan? Wait...Roxanne?! Are you dating my son?" Norman rambled wondering why Roxanne was there.
"Oh my god no! Your son is the second most infuriating man I have ever met! I'm here because I lost a bet and now I have to sit on your son's Gym Leader class board." She explained in disgust.
"Ah I see. You nominated him. Well I hate to tell you but I can't sit on his board." Norman said.
"Why not? Don't think I'm worthy old man?" Brendan asked.
"No nothing of the sort. Gym Leaders can't sit on boards for family members." Norman explained.
"Really? I'm surprised ms. rulebook didn't know that." Brendan said looking at her suspiciously.
Roxanne began to sweat. Then Norman clued in.
"Oh she knew. She calls you the second worst man right? Well the next closest Gym Leader is the so called worst. Brawly Riptide of Dewford City." Norman explained.
"Please no...anything but that…" Roxanne said in a cold sweat.
"Hey you lost the bet fair and square. Dewford it is." Brendan said practically dragging Roxanne out of the building.
Back on Route 104 they ran into May.
"Hey you recover quickly." Brendan stated in surprise.
"Yup! I feel re-energized. So how'd the board go?" May asked more preppy than ever.
"Because he's my old man he can't do it so we're off to Dewford City." Brendan explained.
May saw Roxanne laying on the ground crying.
"Please no...he's the last person I want to see." She pleaded.
"I don't know how you're going to get there. Dewford is an island in the middle of the sea." May explained.
Brendan seemed down while Roxanne seemed relieved.
"Did you kids say Dewford?" A elderly voice asked.
They turned to see the old man and his Wingull from earlier.
"I just so happen to have a boat that can give you passage. It's the least I can do for you kids." The old man explained.
Brendan lit up while Roxanne looked devastated.
"I'll come too. I have business in Dewford." May said.
It took both Brendan and May using their Aura to drag Roxanne onto the boat.
"Set sail for Dewford City!" The old man called out as he chimed his fog horn.
Despite the boat's appearance it was quite fast.
"So what's the history between you and Brawly anyway?" Brendan asked.
Roxanne let out a sigh then stared out into the distance.
"He's...my ex…" she said with a pained look on her face.
"Is he why you hate men?" May asked.
"No. He's just the straw that broke the camel's back. He's a player, he's arrogant, he's self absorbed and he's the reason the best boyfriend I ever had dumped me." Roxanne explained.
"My break up with Brawly wasn't that bad. I dated him when I was 14. I just grew tired of his attitude and the fact that he was always hanging out with his groupies who are all girls by the way." She continued.
"Wow. So let me guess you told him to stop and he didn't?" May said.
"Oh no. I just broke up with him. I never told him his actions were annoying me." She said.
Both Brendan and May had a sweat drop go down their head.
"You should discuss your problems in a relationship." They both thought.
"Anyway after, all my boyfriends would break up within weeks or even days into the relationship. I finally found a true gentleman though. His name was Chaz. He was high born, chivalrous and dreamy. Brawly didn't like him at all. Then last year at a party Brawly tried to drug me. When Chaz confronted him he freaked out and sent Chaz to the hospital. Chaz broke up with me because Brawly was a jealous ex and he wasn't going to deal with it. I freaked out at Brawly and completely cut ties with him." Roxanne finished explaining.
Brendan and May looked at each other. Both of them felt something wasn't adding up in the story. They didn't bother to say anything yet. They finally arrived at Dewford City. City might have been an overstatement. It was just a small island town.
"Alright. Let's find Brawly so I can get my Gym Leader board." Brendan exclaimed.
They then heard a voice in the distance.
"WOOOHOOOO! Cowabunga dudes!" Yelled a man surfing a big wave heading to shore. He was wearing a mostly black wetsuit with orange stripes on it. He had a pair of goggles over his eyes and crazy blue hair.
"Oh my...he's really hot." May said feeling a little hot and bothered.
Brendan noticed that Roxanne was refusing to look at him.
"I think we found Brawly." He stated.
Brawly glanced at his on lookers and once he noticed Roxanne he lost concentration. His board went flying and the wave ate him up. He washed up on the shore face down in the sand. He stayed there for a minute then sprung up.
"Did you see that wipeout!? Totally awesome dude!" He yelled all pumped up.
He quickly brushed himself off and completely ignored Brendan and May.
"Hey Roxanne it's been awhile." He said nervously.
"Save it! I'm here strictly for business. I won't talk to you or hear from you anymore than I have to. Got it!?" She said sternly and refusing to look at him.
"I got it…" he said in a slightly depressed tone.
Now Brendan and May knew something wasn't right.
"So you're Brawly right? Dewford City Gym Leader?" Brendan asked.
"The one and only bro. So what's hanging?" Brawly answered acting cheerful again.
"Well I'm an Aura User and I want to be promoted to Gym Leader class. We came here because Norman is my old man and can't sit on my board." Brendan explained.
"Far out dude. I'll promote ya if you can prove yourself. Let me face ya in battle and if ya show a true fighting spirit you'll be surfing smooth." Brawly said.
"You're on! We'll battle first thing in the morning." Brendan suggested.
"Sure. Why don't you ladies go on ahead. I got a few things to discuss with my challenger bro." Brawly said.
Once the girls were gone Brendan was suddenly pushed up against a building and held by the neck of his shirt.
"Listen good grubbie because I'm only gonna say this once. You treat her like a queen got it?! If you ever hurt Roxanne I'll make you regret the day you were born understand?!" Brawly threatened.
"Whoa whoa just hold on here! You got the wrong idea. I'm not dating Roxanne. Honest." Brendan explained.
Brawly immediately let go of Brendan.
"Sorry dude...I'm just really protective of her." Brawly explained himself.
"Clearly. Look Roxanne told us her side of the story but it just doesn't add up. Especially after what you just did." Brendan said.
"Yeah well...there's a lot that she don't know." Brawly said looking both sad and angry.
"Let's hear your side of the story then." Brendan suggested.
"Get comfy. It's kinda a long story." Brawly said remembering where it all went wrong.
Honestly not my best chapter but I still hope you enjoyed. I do have another Poke Legends story in the making but it's not quite like the rest. It's going to be more of a side character romance where I'll post stories of people like the gym leaders that don't really fit into the main story of the parts. Until next time.
