Wally sighed as he sat at a table in the cafeteria of the Watchtower. Normally he couldn't wait for his snack breaks. This time, however, he found he couldn't enjoy his meal at all. Mostly due to the arguing by the two other people at his table.
"It's just like how Dalmatians can't change their spots. I think Batman is insane to trust Captain Boomerang," John stated. Captain Boomerang was a supervillain and John was convinced that once a supervillain, always a supervillain. "Look at King Shark; he was in the Suicide Squad too and that hasn't changed him," the Green Lantern pointed out. "Where's the evidence he ever really stopped working for the Legion of Doom?"
Shayera raised an eyebrow at him with an unamused look, "I think Batman's probably got plenty of evidence, even if he doesn't personally share it with you, John."
Batman always knew what he was doing. If Batman trusted Captain Boomerang than Captain Boomerang was trustworthy enough to work with. They did both wished that Batman would just tell them everything but he must have had his reasons not to and he had yet to be wrong before.
John rolled his eyes, "I'm sorry but Batman is being idiotic this time. Boomerang hates the Flash with a passion. He just wouldn't let that go and willingly help out Batman, the Flash, and the Justice League just like that."
"He would if he thinks it'll get him out of prison," she argued back. "You're the one being idiotic!"
"I'm not being idiotic Shayera! You're the pigheaded one that doesn't want to admit that I'm right and that I have a very valid point!"
Wally frowned as he sighed in exasperation after listening to them argue for a solid half hour, "Oh would you two just shut up?" The couple's heads snapped around to look at the speedster in surprise after his outburst. "Can't you just give it a rest already?" He continued sharply as the couple frowned. "You two have only been back together for a month and you're already at each other's throats."
He suddenly dropped his cutlery to his plate, grumbled under his breath, and zipped out of the cafeteria.
They watched him go and sat in silence for a few moments. Then John turned to Shayera, "What was all that about? Why's he all pissy that we're bickering with each other? He should be used to it by now."
Shayera shrugged, "I don't know. He's the one that always said we were like an old married couple."
"Then I was right before," John continued. "That's our thing isn't it? Us arguing?"
"Yes, it appears it is," she agreed. "Our version of flirting is nonstop bickering."
"We don't mean anything by it," John stated. "We disagree about pretty much everything but we still love each other. Wally knows that, right?"
Shayera lightly nodded, "I'm sure he does. Though maybe he's worried we'll actually breakup from having so many petty arguments."
"So do you think, maybe, you and I should try to call a truce? At least a temporary one?"
"What for?" She tilted her head in curiosity at his proposal.
"We both know that our arguing sets Wally off. We know that we don't mean anything by it but shouldn't we try and avoid arguing in front of Wally? At least for a little bit so he knows we aren't going to breakup over something simple."
"If we didn't argue, John, we'd never talk," she jokingly stated with a smirk.
"We talk all the time. Like earlier when you asked me to cover your monitor duty shift for tomorrow because you hate them and-"
"And you told me I should have asked earlier in the week rather than asking the day beforehand and then we argued."
John rolled his eyes, "Because you can't apparently budget your time properly throughout the week."
"I can to! Besides you're the one who always starts the arguments," she crossed her arms over her chest. "You just can't ever admit when I'm right."
"You're not always right and you start plenty of arguments yourself," John then paused. "Shayera did we just argue about arguing?"
"I think we might have," she chuckled. "We're horrible."
"We really are hopeless, aren't we?" John as well chuckled. "I'm not saying I like all of the arguing we do but it's...us, isn't it?"
"It is," Shayera nodded. "We could try not to argue, for Wally at the very least."
"Then we'll try it. We could make it into a game between each other."
"How-Long-Can-John-And-Shayera-Go-Without-Bickering? Coming soon to a Justice League near you," Shayera sarcastically stated. "People can place bets."
"Green Arrow and Plastic Man are good at that. They could work out odds for us," he pointed out.
"Three-to-one on twenty minutes of no fighting, five-to-one on half an hour," she offered.
"You really think we can go twenty minutes?" John asked in a serious tone. "I think we should lower it to five minutes."
Shayera rolled her eyes, "Okay, seriously, we'll try and go the rest of the day without having one bickering instance between each other. Even if this is only a joking go at it."
John nodded, "I'm fine with that."
"We've got monitor duty together later on so we might need, you know, a little cooperation from each other."
"You mean you'll need me to listen to you and you to listen to me."
"In the interests of not arguing, John, I'm going to confirm that yes, I will need you to listen to me and I will be very grateful when you do," Shayera said in an exaggeratedly polite tone.
John smirked, "And I will be very appreciative of your gratitude and be very grateful when you listen to me in return." He stood and mockingly bowed to her. "Alright, I gotta meet up with Kyle. He's still adjusting to being in the League and back on Earth."
Shayera snickered, "Good luck with Rayner."
"I'll need it," he sighed. "He'll probably piss off Batman again."
"I agree with that completely. Well, you don't want to be late and remember we need to go easy on Wally."
"I know. I'll see you later for an ordinary, peaceful conversation where we both agree on everything."
"Before you go, how about we up the ante between us? Our own little bet."
John raised an eyebrow, "What's there to bet on?"
"Whoever starts the next argument loses and the loser has to buy dinner for the whole week," Shayera smirked.
John raised an eyebrow, "Considering you get all of your meals for free up here."
"Are you about to start an argument with me Lantern?" Shayera asked in an amused tone. "You seem quite eager to lose already."
"Not at all," he smirked. "Just was stating a fact is all."
"Fine, loser takes the other's monitor duty shifts for the entire week."
John let out a small laugh, "I can live with that wager."
"So can I," she agreed.
When Black Canary asked her the following week why she was on monitor duty, Shayera's muttered response was that she was never making a bet with John again.
