A/N: Set about three months after Chapter 87 Instructor.
"So, you ready to get your ass kicked Wally?" Shayera sarcastically asked the speedster as they entered the simulation room.
"Yeah, yeah Shay, it's all just big talk from a big bird," Wally waved her off. "You two won't last five minutes against us. Right Virg?"
"Bro, you got that right," Static replied with a chuckle. "I give them two minutes."
"I'm actually more worried about embarrassing you guys in front of everyone," Jessica mentioned as she nodded her head towards the monitor room, which had multiple League members waiting to watch the fight.
"Well we might as well give them a show. Try not to hurt yourself too much Wally," Shayera quipped with a smirk.
"We should be fair though Shayera and let them start," Jessica flashed the Thanagarian a small smile. "After all the saying does go ladies first."
"You definitely taught her that one!" Wally frowned and lightly glared at Shayera.
Shayera just simply snickered, "Not my fault she learned fast."
John's voice then came through the speakers from the monitor room, "You guys want to stop running your mouths down there and actually get to it already?"
Static mock saluted the one-way window, "Right away Captain Ring Slayer but only because you asked so nicely."
"Keep your power ring on Lantern," Shayera rolled her eyes. "We'll get to it when we're good and ready."
"Yeah a little trash talk never hurt anyone," Wally pointed out. "It gets the blood pumping."
They could just feel John rolling his eyes as he replied with an exasperated sigh, "Some of us have lives to get back to. We all don't have hours of free time to spare like you guys apparently do."
Shayera shook her head and looked up at the window, "John, seriously, shut up and turn off the mic."
"Yeah what she said," Wally agreed.
Before anyone could get a response from the veteran Lantern, Wally felt an incoming projectile. He leaned back just in time to see a giant, green fist sail by just where his head had been.
"You sneaky little shit," Wally glared at Jessica.
She in turn merely shrugged, "Shayera always says to use the element of surprise to my advantage. You weren't paying attention. It was fair game."
"How about this for fair game?" Static took out his hover disc and flew towards Shayera. His fists became surrounded in electricity. "One hit from these bad boys and you'll be down for the count you oversized chicken nugget."
Shayera shook her head with a sigh and waited until the last moment before sliding forward, landing a punch to Virgil's stomach while ducking under his attack at the same time.
Virgil knelt on his hover disc as he wrapped his arms around his stomach, "Damn that hurt! You could have at least pulled your punch a bit more!"
Shayera in the meantime had used her forward momentum to push herself up into the air. She flew in a high arc, intending to hit Static in midair with her mace. As she came down Virgil flew out of the way of Shayera's mace, which caused the floor to crack where it had impacted. He turned around just in time to see Shayera's right fist flying at him before feeling it make contact with his left cheek.
Virgil landed sprawled out on the ground for a moment before slowly sitting up and rubbing the side of his face, "Jeez Shayera that could have taken my head off."
Shayera smirked as she landed on the ground and placed her hands on her hips, "Think of it as revenge for all of the times you cracked those bird jokes, especially during my pregnancies."
"Cranky old turkey," Virgil muttered to himself as he flopped down on his back.
Jessica, on the other hand, was finding that trying to keep up with the Flash was next to impossible for her. Any construct she threw at him he easily ended up dodging. That and she knew the Flash was well accustomed to dealing with a Green Lantern.
Flash mockingly yawned and stretched, "Come on at least make me work up a sweat. I'm falling asleep over here."
Jessica narrowed her eyes slightly and switched tactics to a more close-ranged approach, using her ring to create a barrier around the two. With only ten feet to move either way, Wally found himself cornered and soon had a rope construct wrapped around him.
"You really think this is gonna hold me?" Wally smirked before he began to vibrate his body. The intense speed was too much for the construct to handle and it collapsed only a few seconds later, dropping the speedster to the ground.
Wally then went on the offensive, running straight towards the young Green Lantern. As he swung his fist at her head, he found that his progress had been halted by a green sphere protecting Jessica's body. Wally dashed around the sphere at superspeed, pounding away at the shield as he did so. Small cracks began to appear around the construct but Jessica made sure to repair them instantly each time they formed.
Sensing a stalemate, Wally raced to the other end of the room. Jessica tilted her head and raised an eyebrow in confusion as to what the Flash had planned. Taking off at full speed, Wally's fist connected with the green sphere that Jessica was still maintaining. This time, when the sphere cracked, it didn't repair itself right away. Wally once again raced towards the sphere at full speed and another blow opened the crack even further. When he came back around for a third punch, that would shatter the sphere, Jessica self-exploded the construct. The resulting shockwave threw both of the heroes back.
Jessica stood and shook her head as she tried to regain her bearings. In the meantime Wally had already recovered and ran at the Lantern. He ended up driving his left shoulder right into her, putting Jessica flat on the ground.
With a cocky grin, Wally looked down at her, "Done?"
Jessica slowly nodded, trying to align the three Flashes that were standing over her, "Yeah, I'm definitely done."
"You're not too bad at fighting for someone that doesn't like to do it," Wally offered a hand to lift Jessica from the ground.
"Thanks," Jessica quietly replied as she took hold of his hand and slowly stood. She then rubbed the back of her head, "I should have known I didn't stand a chance against a founding member."
"Don't be too hard on yourself," Shayera said to her. "Considering that you never fought a person with superspeed before you did very well."
Jessica seemed to perk up slightly at that, "Really?"
"Yes really," Shayera then turned to Wally and smirked. "Now that they're both done, why don't we show them a real fight?"
Wally shook his head and began to back away from the Thanagarian as he held his hands up, "No way not happening in a million years. You kicked my ass last time."
"Actually," Jessica began. "I wouldn't mind seeing Shayera in a real fight for once. She always has to hold back with me and still wipes the floor with me. With everything Superman told me and from what I've experienced myself, I can only imagine how well she could hold her own against even an experienced Green Lantern."
Shayera slyly smirked as she looked up at the one-way window, "You hear that Lantern? You're being invited to get your ass handed to you."
Up in the observation deck John let out a sigh as he rolled his eyes. He then shook his head, "Why am I getting roped into this?"
"Don't do it," Green Arrow warned him. "You know how this is going to end."
John let out another sigh as he ignored Oliver and made his way down to the simulation room.
"That man is on a suicide mission," Booster Gold said with his arms crossed over his chest. "No way will he beat Shayera in a fight."
Huntress smirked as she nudged Oliver's arm, "Twenty bucks on Shayera losing."
Oliver scoffed at the notion, "In your dreams, Shayera is going to wipe the floor with him."
Black Canary shrugged, "I don't know Ollie. GL's got that ring after all. I don't think Shayera can go up against that for too long. I'm with Helena on this one. I got twenty-five on GL myself."
"I'll put thirty bucks on Shayera pulverizing him," Plastic Man stated. "An extra ten if she does it in five minutes or less."
John entered the simulation room with a frown planted on his face. "This has to be the stupidest thing she's talked me into in the past week," he grumbled under his breath.
Wally patted John on the shoulder as he and Virgil walked past him, "Good luck man, you're totally gonna need it."
John then noticed that Shayera had her back to him as she was talking to Jessica in a hushed tone. He raised an eyebrow, "Are we going to do this or what Shay?"
Shayera glanced back at him and rolled her eyes before turning her attention back to Jessica. A few moments later she nodded her head towards the monitor room and Jessica seemed to nod in agreement and left the room herself.
"So," Shayera placed her hands on her hips. "When was the last time we even did this?"
John found himself smirking, "Quite some time ago, at least way before your pregnancy with Emma."
"You probably forgot what it feels like to get your ass kicked by a little Thanagarian," she stated with a small smirk. "Don't worry, I'll be somewhat gentle."
John continued to smirk as he cracked his knuckles, "Bring it on Shayera."
"Hey Lantern you wanna have some fun with this?"
"What kind of fun?"
"Loser has to sit through the next musical, Disney movie with Emma and Rex," Shayera wagered. "And I mean sit through the entire movie even if they fall asleep halfway through. Winner gets to pick the movie."
"Now that's brutal." John contemplated for moment before nodding, "Alright fine, loser has to watch it with them."
Shayera smirked as she energized her mace, "I hope you like watching The Lion King."
"In your dreams Shayera. I'll make you sit through The Little Mermaid."
"I can't believe it," Jessica quietly said as she watched the fight. "Shayera is easily out-flying John despite him being able to fly faster than her."
"It's not about speed," Wally said to her. "And trust me I know about speed. Shayera doesn't need that if she can outmaneuver him with a few aerial tricks."
"Still wanna keep that bet?" Oliver asked Helena. "You can back out now if you want."
"Oh I'm definitely sure." Helena crossed her arms over her chest and gave Arrow a cocky grin, "I'm so confident that I'll raise my bet to a hundred bucks."
"My money's on GL too," Virgil said. "He's got that power ring. All Shayera's got is that mace. So you got forty from me."
Wally then winced as he watched John manage to land a hit on Shayera's back, "Oh that one definitely hurt."
"Why is she getting up so slow? I thought Thanagarians were more durable than humans," Jessica looked at the speedster quizzically as she tilted her head.
"Not if you hit them in the back. Especially where John hit her," he replied. "If you hit Shayera right in between her wings you'll send her for a loop. Even someone like Shayera has a weakness."
Jessica watched as Shayera shook her head and scowled at John before charging at him. This time she was the one who winced as Shayera managed to easily break through John's construct and went on the offensive with her mace, "I know how that feels. Even with a protective barrier around your body, that mace hurts."
"That mace hurts?" Virgil rhetorically asked as he raised an eyebrow. "Try getting punched by her. Now that hurts."
Atom Smasher nodded, "Gotta agree with Sparky there. She's got a nasty right hook. I learned that the hard way."
Shayera grunted as John managed to grab the lower half of her body with a hand construct, "Goddammit I should have seen that coming."
"You give up now?" John asked her with an amused smirk. "If you do I'll let you pick what we have for dinner tonight at least as a consolation."
Shayera likewise smirked, "Not a chance Lantern, I'm not letting you bribe me. I still have the element of surprise in my favor."
At that John raised an eyebrow, "I don't see how Shay. You're caught with no way out. Just admit that you lost."
"Shayera," Jessica's voice came over the speakers. "Remember it's all about concentration and visualization."
"Easier said than done," the Thanagarian replied back. "Especially in the middle of combat and not some practice session."
"You never let me use that as an excuse. You said to always be prepared and ready to fight."
Shayera rolled her eyes, "Of course you would use my own philosophy against me."
"Am I missing something?" John asked.
"The easiest way to make someone gain self-confidence is to let them become the teacher instead," Shayera explained. "Jessica needed to see that she can be a Green Lantern and that she knows what she's doing. Easiest way of proving that was for her to teach someone to use a power ring."
"Yeah but there's no one who..." John's voice trailed off as his eyes widened. Before he could react or say anything a green fist construct hit him and sent him flying back a few feet. John looked back up to be greeted by the sight of Shayera wielding Jessica's power ring.
"What's wrong John?" Shayera asked him with a smirk. "I thought you said I was caught with no way out. What happened to that?"
"Now you're just playing dirty."
"No that's called using my resources," she retorted before firing an energy beam at him.
"Holy mother of shit!" Huntress exclaimed.
"I did not expect that one," Dinah stated with an amused look. "Shayera might pull this off."
"You are one sneaky, little Green Lantern," Wally said to Jessica with a smirk.
Jessica shrugged as she lightly smiled back, "It turns out that willpower and stubbornness are pretty much the same thing. Shayera's constructs are very crude and she can't fly using the ring but she's got the blasting part down."
"You can say that again," Green Arrow commented. "She's trashing that room."
"I'm putting fifty on Shayera creaming John," Wildcat smirked. "She's got the package deal now. Flight, strength, and that fancy ring."
"Again, she's not an expert at using it," Jessica pointed out. "John's a veteran Green Lantern; Shayera isn't."
"Put an extra thirty from me," Atom Smasher nodded his head towards the window. "Hawkgirl's definitely got this."
"An extra twenty from me too," Plastic Man stated. "No way is GL gonna win."
"Dammit," Huntress lightly scowled. "Q's gonna kill me if I lose a hundred bucks on this. Come on GL kick her ass already."
"I don't know they seem pretty evenly matched," Jessica said as she watched Shayera charge at John with her mace.
Wally shrugged, "Well they both know how the other fights so it's not like it would be an easy fight for either of them. Plus they're both holding back. Neither of them wants to accidentally hurt the other."
"This is them holding back?" Jessica asked as her eyes widened slightly. "I thought they were going all out with the way they're fighting."
"Nah this is them just having some fun," Wally waved her off. "Shayera would have clobbered John with her mace by now if she really wanted to hurt him or John would have hit Shayera really hard on her back earlier if he wanted to take her down."
John twisted himself in midair as he narrowly avoided being decked by Shayera's mace. He then frowned at her in response, "I thought this was supposed to be some sparring not you trying to knock my head clean off."
Shayera lightly chuckled, "This is just some sparring. You simply forgot how rough I fight. Remember it's been well over four years."
John flew out of the way as his wife once again charged at him with her mace. He had only flew about twenty feet into the air when he felt something wrap tightly around his body. He looked down to see that Shayera managed create chains with Jessica's power ring and had ensnared him. Though he could also tell that maintaining the construct was proving to be a challenge for the Thanagarian. She was gritting her teeth as she tried to hold her concentration solely on the construct and John could see that the construct itself was developing small cracks throughout it despite her best efforts to preserve it.
John pridefully smirked. While he was a bit surprised at first that Shayera had managed to get this far in learning how to use a power ring, he suspected that she would be able to do it. For a long time, John had a suspicion that she had the willpower necessary to be a potential Green Lantern candidate. At the same time John knew that the Oans would never allow her to join the Corps nor would Shayera willingly bow to the Guardians. It made John also wonder what could have happened had the Thanagarians not fallen out of favor with Oa.
"You need to visualize your willpower taking shape in your mind Shayera," John said to her. "The construct is just a manifestation of your own imagination."
"Shut up I know that," she muttered through clenched teeth.
"If you know that why are you struggling so much?" He asked her with an amused look. "Though I don't really see you as the type of person with a very vivid imagination."
"Very funny," Shayera gave him an unamused look in response. "You know damn well that I'm not a Green Lantern so it should be impressive enough that I managed to do this." Having broken her concentration for that brief moment the chain construct around John dissipated. Shayera in turn scowled at him, "Dammit John!"
"What?" He asked with an innocent look. "I didn't do anything. You didn't concentrate."
"Screw this ring! I'm fighting the old way!"
The two flew at each other once again. Just as Shayera had swung her mace, John had raised his power ring to go on the offensive himself. The mace collided with the beam of energy just as it started to exit the ring. The resulting collision between the two forces easily knocked both of the superheroes out of the air.
John let out a low grunt as he then grimaced. He then heard a soft groan underneath him and realized that he was laying on top of another body. He opened his eyes to see Shayera was underneath him and was grimacing herself.
"You okay Shay?"
She slowly nodded, "Yeah but next time remind me not to break your fall. Mind getting off me now?"
"Right," John slowly stood as he rubbed the back of his neck. "You're not exactly comfortable to land on Shayera."
Shayera herself slowly stood as she stretched her back out, "Yeah well you're not exactly a fluffy pillow landing on me either."
John looked over to Shayera and raised an eyebrow, "Does this count as a draw?"
Shayera shrugged, "I suppose so."
"What do we do in the case of a draw?"
Shayera placed her hands on her hips and was silent for a moment, "I guess we both have to sit through a Disney movie now to be fair and we're not watching Old Yeller either. I don't care if it's a Disney movie."
John playfully rolled his eyes, "Sure take the fun out of it. Fine we'll have to agree on something."
"Or we let Emma be the neutral third party and have her choose," Shayera lightly chuckled. "I'll watch anything as long as it isn't Old Yeller again."
"She might make us watch Mary Poppins again. You hated Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
"I forgot about that movie," Shayera groaned and rolled her eyes. "Please don't let her pick that movie. Hide it first thing when we get home. Anyway you still in one piece John?"
John shrugged with a small grin, "A little bruised but nothing too bad."
Shayera slyly smirked as she leaned her body against John's, "Good I didn't want to bang you up too much before tonight."
"You're really banking on them falling asleep during the movie aren't you?"
"Well Rex has yet to stay awake during a movie and if we make sure Emma doesn't take a nap then she'll be passed out within forty minutes," she pointed out as she crossed her arms over her chest. "Which means we get the entire night to ourselves for once. It's a win-win situation."
"Yeah but Emma is going to be cranky for the rest of the afternoon and all evening if we don't make her take a nap. You know how she gets. Is it really that worth it?"
Shayera waved him off, "Let her throw a temper tantrum or two. It's nothing we haven't dealt with before."
"You get to deal with that since it's your idea. I'd rather deal with supervillains than one of her tantrums."
"Lightweight."
