Hanukkah

Tommy remembered this holiday from last year. Only it came earlier than expected.

After Thanksgiving.

But he didn't mind as half of what was going on he didn't understand as Stu held him and Didi held Trixie while Grandpa Borris said words he didn't understand.

"What that? What that?" Trixie asked one night.

Tommy guessed it to be night three of Hanukkah or maybe not. He didn't exactly know but watching the menorah light up and getting free candy and gifts was a lot of fun.

Trixie blinked at him, kicking her feet to keep herself occupied.

"This is Hanukkah. At least that's what Angelica says," Tommy explained. "I don't know what it's all about but we get free gifts and I get yummy chocolate coins to eat." He stroked her hair, a little jealous that her curls were growing in faster than his own hair as her bottom lip trembled. "Don't worry, you'll get to eat them too when you get teeth."

"When that Tommy?" Trixie wondered.

"I don't know but I think it's not for a long, long time."

Trixie accepted his answer, shaking the new rattle Grandma Mika had given her earlier that night after the menorah had been lit before looking up at the funny birthday candle thingy in confusion.

She would never understand what Hanukkah was even with her big brother's explanation.

The tv people never talked about it very often so it had to be something their mommy and grandparents did every year before night-night time.

That made much more sense to her as Tommy stayed by her side until they were carried to the kitchen to eat dinner.
