Mother's Day
"Angie, what's Mother's Day?"
Angelica looked down from the card she'd just finished making for Charlotte at Trixie who was gnawing on Tommy's old teddy bear.
How could she explain it to someone who was learning how to sit up on her own?
"Don't be mean. You worked forever and ever to be nice, don't mess it up now."
The words she told herself earlier that morning before being dropped off at her aunt and uncle's house played in her mind as she climbed down from the chair she was sitting in and sat down next to her younger cousin.
"Normally I'd let Tommy do this stuff but since he's napping, I'll tell you anyway. Mother's Day is the day where we give presents to our moms as a way to say thank you," Angelica explained.
"For what?" Trixie wondered.
The nearly four year old shrugged. "I don't know why but it makes our mommies happy."
"That would explain the pink paint Daddy put my hands in the other day before he put them on a plate and wrote my name on it!" The eight month old giggled.
Though she had seen what her uncle had done and thought it was silly, Angelica found herself smiling.
Once her mommy got off work, they planned to spend the rest of the day together at home.
She could hardly wait!
"Angelica, can I talk to you for a moment?" Charlotte asked as her daughter looked up from her homemade sundae that evening.
"What is it Mommy? Did you not like your card?" Angelica frowned.
"I loved it. It was very charming. But I wanted to ask you something. Daddy and I were talking and since it didn't work out the last time, we were thinking of trying again or considering adoption. Do you think you want to be a big sister again?"
"I don't know."
"I see you look a little conflicted about this so when you're ready to be a big sister again, let us know," Charlotte smiled.
Angelica giggled, hugging her tightly as she gave her a chocolate mustache grin.
She wasn't ready to accept the responsibility of being an older sister just yet but when she felt like it, she'd know.
