CHAPTER 6
There's an unspoken connection between us,
we can both feel it pulsing through the air.
~Holly Riordan
Marcus smiles as he turns the small brass vase. It is topped with fake flowers but they added a lot of color in the middle of the square narra* table. The spread looks great but it needs something to finish it and good thing he found one of Ashley's rustic décor that did the trick. He checks the table next and moves the utensils an inch here, a plate a little to the right there.
He got up very early for his daily jog around the village. After three rounds he stops and as he was doing some stretching he wonders if he would take his run beyond the gate but he suddenly had a great idea. He jogged back home, got his wallet and took the SUV out. He remembers a convenience store just the other block right at the gas station and he had a paper bag full of items when he left that store.
-o0o—
"Hey! Good morning!"
Tessa cringed. Caught! Damn it! She was almost at the door! Her hands tightened around the strap of her bag. She took a deep breath and with a squeak of sneakers she turns around just as Marcus places a plate full of newly cooked food on the table.
"I'm glad you're awake!"
"Why?" Tessa slowly goes to the food-laden table in wonder as if pulled by gravity. The smell draws her in."What's this?"
Marcus's smile got even bigger, "Our breakfast!"
"You…we're gonna have breakfast?"
"Of course! This is for us!"
"Nice!" Tessa whispers. She smiles shyly as she daintily picks a tidbit of bacon. "You cooked all of this?"
"Yeah." Marcus shifts his eyes away as her lips puckers around the tips of her forefinger and thumb. Fuck!
She stares at one plate, "Are those…?"
"Yep. Cooking and baking relaxes me." Hands on hips Marcus looks proud of himself. "But this breakfast is missing your coffee."
"Uh," she blinks; she places a hand on her chest, "my… coffee?"
"Yeah! It's better than Starbucks!"
"Oh, really?" she took a half-step back as she practically glowed at his words; her lips curves with a pleased smile. "You liked it?"
"Wasn't my reaction yesterday enough? I loved it!" He takes in her appearance; the close-fitting black shirt, cream shorts and white laced sneakers and hair done in French braid. "Are you going somewhere?"
"Uh, yeah." Tessa nervously runs her hand at the strap of her brown bucket bag. "I'll just quickly get something at the convenience store."
"The one at the gas station?" Marcus drops a spatula in the sink and washes his hands briskly. "Why?"
"I… need to get some things." Tessa shifts on her feet.
"What do you need?" Marcus reached behind him and unties the denim apron after he dried his hands.
"Uhm, some 'personal' items…" her shoulders sag at his raised brow, she looks away, more foot shifting. "Things a girl need."
Ah…."You need it now?"
"Yeah, I won't be long. It's just two blocks from here."
"That's three, including our block. Let's drive there."
"No, I'll be fine! It's nearby."
"There!" Marcus went back to the kitchen and got some extra plates to cover the food. "When we come back we can have breakfast."
"I can walk…" What do I do to shake him off without hurting his feelings?
"No way!" Marcus opens the screen door invitingly, jiggling the SUV's keys. "I don't wanna be here all alone."
Tessa is totally won over with that pout. "Okay. You can come with me." She stops as she gets to the door. "Marcus, you have to…"
"Oh," Marcus peeled his eyes off of her at seeing her dilemma; his body almost blocks her exit. She returns his smile. "This looks familiar." He moves out of the way with a chuckle.
"I'll make us some coffee to make it up to you." Tessa shyly looks away as Marcus presented her the full view of the muscles on his back as he locks the front door, the slim waist and hips, the firm buttocks. Let's not forget the front is also worth looking at; the toned arms, deep chest. She almost blushed when he removed the apron at how the gray jogging pants enhance the prominence of his masculinity. He should wear that often around the house.
"Oh, I'd love that. What's the secret?" Is she blushing?
"With the coffee?" Tessa shrugs, turning her face to the wind; the cool breeze brings relief on her skin. "Nothing."
"Oh, there has to be something…" he whispers but she rolls her eyes. Marcus gave the knob a few turns to make sure the front door is secure.
"Yes, fine! I added some potion to it." She whispers to him as she follows him to the gate, her skin still tingling from that whisper.
"Yeah! That's why!" They chuckle as Marcus points the key fob at the SUV. He checks his watch. He hopes that nothing, not the Bureau and his new task force, would interrupt this time. He would be pissed if that happens. Please, not today… not today. He said it like a prayer as he rounds the SUV to the driver's side.
-o0o—
As they got out of the gate and on the highway Marcus's hands clenches tight on the wheel. There is a condo being built near the gate. It's about this time in the morning that the construction workers arrive and are now milling along the sidewalk. It was with immense relief he didn't let Tessa walk through the noisy crowd of men who would catcall and yell unmentionable words to her.
"My mom was worried for me to come here." Tessa said as they turn towards the road.
"Why?"
"This river always over flow every time there's a typhoon." When he got behind the wheel Marcus took a pair of shades from the glove compartment. Damn! Why did he get even way hotter than before?
"Really?" She nods at his surprise. "Are you cold?"
"I'm okay. " Tessa stops rubbing her arms. "Did you know my aunts and I used to come here every year?"
"Why?"
"School shoes."
"School shoes?"
"New shoes every year. Did you know they make great shoes here?"
"Is that true? I didn't know that." Marcus looks back to the road and allowed an old man to cross.
"No blisters."
"Blisters?" His eyes went to her legs and feet….
"I have sensitive…." Tessa tensed, stabs a stiff finger in front. "Car!" She quickly reaches for the grab bar up the door. There was a screech as Marcus hit the brakes stopping the SUV from crashing into a small car. Both of them were almost thrown forward. Good thing there were seat belts!
"Shit! What the fuck! You okay?" Concerned and afraid Marcus immediately turns to Tessa; a hand out. "Are you okay, Tessa?"
"Yeah! I'm okay." Tessa gasped and took Marcus's hand. "Eyes on the road, Schumacher*!"
"Are you sure?" Carefully, Marcus parks the car by the side.
"I'm fine, my heart just almost exploded!" She added under her breath. "That's why I wanted to walk."
"You'd dare walk out there? Really? Did you see those men out there?"
"Men? Where?"
"The construction workers…"
"So?" She looked confused as she shrugs.
"So? Do you want to be catcalled…"
"Catcalled?"
"Men shouting sexual…."
"I know what it is, Marcus." Tessa massages her shoulder. "Not my first time to get catcalled but they're not usually that crass."
"What the hell…" he said under his breath as he maneuvers the vehicle back on the road.
"What's that?"
"Nothing. I said I'll check on that shoulder when we get back home."
"I'm ok. Let's just go." Tessa sighed loudly and resettled herself in the seat and checked whether things fell off of her bag. "Now, before we crashed into oblivion, let's go back to what we were talking about. I simply couldn't believe you don't know anything about this city and you have a house here."
Marcus gave her a smile and a shake of his head. "Guilty. Do you wanna explore it with me?"
"I'd love to." She looked delighted and it equally delighted him. Tessa's heart tripped a little from that thigh clenching smile he threw at her. Shit.
"I like going out for drives. It's relaxing."
"Cooking, baking and driving to relax when he's not crashing into cars," Tessa snorts at his fake shocked face, "just how stressful is your job?"
Careful. Careful man. "You…' he wanted to clench the wheel tight, "have no idea."
"How long have you had this 'mysterious' job?"
An innocent question and she thinks she's joking. "Far too long it would seem."
"Marcus, why not change careers? Jobs?"
"I don't know what else to do. I'm very good at my job."
"Have you ever thought of teaching?"
"I'm sorry I laughed;" Marcus took a deep breath, still chuckling, "Teaching. I don't think I'd be a good teacher."
"You never know. Maybe a new opportunity will help broaden your horizon."
"I like my job." Marcus barks a laugh, "Insane, right?"
She gave a couple of nods of approval, "No. That's good…or else nothing's worth it."
Marcus gave her a look as they stop at the convenience store. "I guess you're right." He said softly as Tessa gets out.
-o0o-
A good sense of humor, dirty mind and a beautiful heart.
Deadly combination.
It turns out their 'trip' to the convenience store was short. Marcus was expecting Tessa would linger a little longer but as soon as she found what she was looking for she quickly went to the cashier and paid cash, politely declining his offer to pay for her stuff. As Marcus loves and admires independent women, he bows out, respecting her wish.
When she got her change she turns to him and said 'let's go home' after her purchases were bagged and for some reason it made him stutter something like 'O-okay, home it is."
The drive back home was quiet; Tessa seems relaxed. She has a serene smile, arms loosely wrapped around the paper bag on her lap. Marcus took a deep breath; he couldn't believe she didn't lose control or harangue him after that 'almost' car incident. Cool girl.
"Ready for coffee?" She asks when they got inside the house.
That gentle look in her eyes freezes him again and his mind becomes filled with titillating inclinations. Damn it. So much for saving her from the construction workers! All he could manage is to eye Tessa as she fills the kettle from the water dispenser. "Yes, I am but…" Marcus clicks his fingers. "Let me look at that shoulder first." He took the filled kettle from her hand and set it on the table.
Her heart suddenly starts tripping at him standing too close. "I thought you were joking. There's nothing to check. I'm okay. Do you know how often this happens on public transportation here? Every day. We're used to whiplash."
"Tessa please, let me do it. You won't have to do anything. I'll be quick." They lock eyes at each other totally sensitive about that current of bound attraction and desire they know that's there between the two of them. If one of them make a move…"What?" he chuckles, the dimples that Tessa loves deepening. "Stop that." his chuckles got louder at her barely controlled giggle. He reddens a little. "You know what I mean…" He grins, struggling not to lose control of his laughter, "you have a naughty mind."
"You started it." Tessa forced herself to stop giggling, hand over her mouth. She took a deep breath and tried to avoid Marcus's eyes or else she'll start all over again. "Okay. Fine." Hell, that fist-sized organ in her chest begins to pound like the heart of a small bird the way he took her right arm and placed it on his left shoulder.
"Does it hurt here?" Marcus slightly digs a thumb and forefinger on the thickest part of Tessa's upper arm. His hand went higher at her 'no'. "Here?" He slightly rotates her shoulder. Tessa shakes her head.
"This is the second time you've…"
"I was a paramedic." he said quietly.
Tessa drops her jaw in shock. "Cool! When?"
"Long time ago."
"You're still one?" Marcus shook his head. "What happened?"
"Someone offered me a better job."
"That's awesome." Tessa's words ends in a whisper as she looks at her hand on Marcus' shoulder. The man reaches up and held hers there and it's suddenly hard to breathe. "Marcus…." She could see the goosebumps rising from her right arm as he caresses her hand with his thumb. Something is happening with her and she doesn't know what it is. A hot 'current' shoots up and down her body every time her eyes lock with Marcus's. She feels this 'pull' from the middle of her being. The warmth of his hand on her cheeks yesterday…his thumb caressing her soapy hand and palm again and again…her mouth and throat had suddenly gone dry… she slightly sways over to him. "I think…coffee?" her voice shook a little.
"Yeah…" With a sigh Marcus lowers his eyes as he took her hand down from his shoulder and steps back. "Yeah, it's time for coffee."
Tessa felt a little disappointed at herself for breaking the moment. She is scared but she's kind of excited and curious too but sorry to say, she wouldn't know what would have happened; he had pulled away slowly. She doesn't know what to do or how to act on whatever this is between them. " I told you my shoulder's okay but thanks, Marcus."
"Anytime, Tessa." Marcus took the kettle from the table and handed it to her. She reached for it with both hands because if she didn't her hand would shake. That would be embarrassing, huh?
Now that Marcus has gotten some semblance of control of his emotion and male driven impulse he turns his attention to his well-prepared table and uncovers the plates. So far his 'offering' held up well in the wait. He popped the bacon back in the oven. He glances at Tessa's back after he closed the oven door…Meanwhile, while the water is on its way to a boil Tessa places the reusable strainer in the mouth of the jar then measures the amount of coffee for the two of them. His curiosity got the better of him and he went back to Tessa when she took out and used something to the boiling water.
"Would you please pour the hot water?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Oops! Not too fast." Her hand covers his.
Steady now, man. "Tessa, why use the thermometer?"
"The right and wrong temperature affects the taste of coffee." she raised a sassy brow to him as the dark liquid drips into the tempered glass. "What do you think of that?"
"Smells like heaven!" Marcus inhaled that wonderful aroma like he wanted it to enter his pores. 'You're amazing, Tessa!"
"Shut up." She laughs softly. "I just boiled the water."
"No, you are amazing…" Her skin feels wonderful…
"Marcus…." His name is a quiet gasp under his light caress.
"Believe it." Marcus stood back.
"Well, you have to thank a former student who gifted me this coffee set."
"When was she your student?"
"He's my student a year ago."
"Ah…." Marcus leans against the wall, arms crossed. "Students usually shower their teachers gifts?"
Tessa shrugs. "Yeah, some do."
"Why?"
"Gratitude. My student passed the UK English test."
"UK? I was just there. It's a lovely place. So," he crosses his arms, "how old is he?"
"Uh…what's this?" Tessa snorts, "Cross examination?"
"No!" Marcus gave a short laugh. "Just curious."
"Curious." Tessa isn't sold with his answer. "Fine, you're my boss. He was 18 that time." She raised both brows at him. "Jealous?"
"Why would I be…" He flustered. "Hey…all I know is that you are amazing!"
"Yeah, right." With a sassy smirk she hands him a mug of coffee, "Come on, Perry Mason*. Drink your coffee before it gets cold."
-o0o—
"More coffee?" Marcus holds the coffee jar up to Tessa.
"Yes, please."
"Did you like the scones?" Marcus tries one more time. He was a little worried as Tessa has been lapsing into silence on and off since they began their breakfast.
"Oh, yes!" She brightened. "They're delicious! It's the first time I had one. Thank you."
"Made them myself. I learned that in the UK." Tessa said 'awesome!' and the smile dimmed again. "Hey, everything okay?"
"Yes? I'm fine."
"You…you seemed unusually quiet." Marcus rests crossed arms on the table, "Hey, I apologize for the joke about your student."
"Yeah. I know you're jealous."
"I…I'm not!" Marcus stops stuttering at her smirk. "You….!" She made me fall for it.
"I was just thinking about my classes." she gave him a quick smile as she went back to her coffee.
"Are you sure?" Marcus took note where her eyes went again. Marcus hopes she would say something. This is the perfect opening to look into what's been a big question about Tessa and he has been trying his best to open up to her. "Something happened to your phone? The SIM?"
"Cross exam again, Mr. Mason?" Tessa took a deep breath.
Marcus just gave her a one shoulder shrug. "I'm just wondering why you bought one."
"It got corrupted."
"How?"
"It's getting spam mail."
Marcus frowns. "That doesn't make sense. What kind?"
"It's…it's nothing."
There. The things he had observed earlier; the tense lips and forehead, the balled fist. It's back. "Can I…see it?"
"No…" she whispers a few seconds after she shook her head.
"Tessa…"
"Please!" She holds up a hand. "I don't want to talk about it!"
She raises her eyes, and her jaw is set like stone. The eyes are hard. He experienced them the first time yesterday. She's shy on occasion but like a katana that sharp blade comes out of the sheath. "I just want to help, Tessa."
"It doesn't concern you."
"It does."
"Why? What do you care?" she frowns and looks away.
"You are under my care."
"I'll take care of this. I always have." She gestures to assure him. "I am your hired help, that's who I am."
"What are you saying? What does it matter? Tessa, I care that you are in distress. I want to help you." He took her slightly cold hand in his. "I will not judge you. Please?" he gave her small hand a gentle squeeze as he sees her struggle; the way she breathes deep, the pursed lips.
In response Tessa unlocks her phone and slides it to him.
Marcus was relieved.
Without a word he slides the jar of jam towards her.
"Thanks." She whispers with that smile he likes. Tessa took the jar, breaks the bread in half and puts some jam on a piece of scone. She turns her eyes away as he scrolls to her messages box while taking a bite. She would remember this taste, this memory long after she's gone from here. She spares a glance at Marcus as emotion change across the man's face.
"Who is this?"
She closes her eyes. "I don't know." She shakes her head at his raised brow.
"How often do you get these?" He stops at one message that Tessa responded to. Whoa! She's savage. That's good. Tessa knows how to fight back.
"It just comes." Tessa shrugs as she stirs the coffee she made for Marcus.
"Could this be your ex?"
"No. That's not his style."
"Has your ex called or texted you?"
Tessa breathes out slowly after she got over Marcus casually licking is fingers off of jam. "No. I've never talked or seen him after he…" Tessa busies herself corralling the crumbs on the table.
"After he…?"
She declined the plate of bacon he holds up. "After he…" she took a deep breath…."broke up with me."
"So how do they know your number?"
"I don't know. I've changed my SIM card …." she blinks, "no..."
"What?"
"My number is at my free-lance job. It's my essay writing class…"
"Where?"
"On my social media account…I made a separate page. It's the contact number for my students…I'll just get my tablet."
"Okay." As soon as Tessa's gone Marcus opened his own mobile. He types fast. He just about pushed 'send '…..
"Good news…" Tessa breezed back, eyes on her tablet. "A few of my students have left so I'm free until 6 this evening!"
"Good. We can have lunch too." Marcus let out a tired sigh, leaning back on the chair. "Let's just hope that…"
"That?"
"That my office doesn't call."
"Hmm, just like yesterday. So you're basically on call 24/7?"
"Something like that."
Tessa frowns a little; she thought he would be forthcoming. "So will they call today?"
"I hope not." Marcus gave a groan as he leans further back in the chair, stretching his arms up and behind it. "I like this day."
"I also hope they don't call too." Marcus suddenly looks down when she placed her hand over his.
"By the way, I have not told you this but since I came here you have been so good and understanding. I'm grateful that you let me stay. I just want to thank you, Marcus." That long look he gave her almost made her gasp. Whenever he has that look it would always flare goosebumps on her. What does that mean? What does he mean by that look?
"I'm just returning the favor. You…you have saved my best friend's life…"
"No…I…I'm just a caretaker, Marcus…"
"Listen, if you did not accept this responsibility my friends would be looking for someone to look after this house. Mike's health would have further deteriorated….
Tessa took Marcus's balled hand. "Marcus, they were willing to wait for you to come back…."
"Exactly! And….and I'll never forgive myself if my friend died because of me!" cutlery and flatware clinked and jumped when he banged his fist on the heavy table.
"Marcus…" Tessa whispers as she takes his hand. "I know how you feel…"
"Tessa…" Marcus shakes his head, throat choked with emotion. "I don't think you know how…"
"I lost my friend…" Tessa blinks as her eyes feels hot with the surge of tears, "last year."
"What? Oh shit. Tessa, I'm sorry."
"It still hurts. " Tessa covers her mouth with her hands.
"How?"
"Pneumonia. She was 65 years old."
"65 years old?!" Tessa nods at Marcus's surprise.
"Yes, her health went bad since her husband died four years ago; maybe from heartbreak." Tessa wipes her cheeks but Marcus's hand is there to help. "People were kinda scared of her because she was an American…" she giggles.
"What? She's American?" He and Tessa chuckle.
"Yeah. She's loud but she has a big heart. I lived at her house after my ex kicked me out of our apartment."
"Bloody hell?!"
Tessa sniffed and took her hanky from her bag. "My life."
"What kind of man does that?!"
"When Leslie still had her clunker of a car we went to where my ex was working."
"To visit him?" Marcus breathes deep. He's feeling quite violent at the moment; he wants to put his fist through Tessa's ex or whoever that bastard is.
"No. I want to find out where he works. Some dots do not connect in his story."
Marcus went cold after hearing her words, his smile froze a little. "He lied to you?"
"That's what we suspect so we went there…"
"What did you find out?"
"No one knew him there …no one." She ended with a frustrated sigh.
"What did you do after that?"
"I don't know…"
"You didn't know?" Marcus got goosebumps at the hollow expression in her eyes.
"I don't know. I often wonder how I got home in one piece. Leslie was shocked that I forgot all that. I lost a page of my memory…'
"My God…"
Tessa shook her head then turns to him with a smile. He was surprised when she gave him a kiss on the cheek, "That's for the breakfast. I'll clean up and then get some nap."
-o0o—
Thank God he's not as messy as my brother. Tessa gave the kitchen towel another rinse after wiping the stove top clean. She hung the clean towel on the curtain rod at the window. She was really surprised that Marcus cooked all that food with only the half the mess whereas whenever her brother cooks it looked like the whole kitchen was a war zone and it takes three people to put things back into order.
The pans, plates and utensils are drying in the rack. The floor has been swept clean. Marcus was the one who put away the food telling her how to reheat the scones at the toaster oven. '…If you need to have some snack in between classes.'
The man seemed sad when she told him that she usually takes her meals in her room so she could write her lesson evaluations. She was about to suggest something but changed her mind because that might be a bad idea.
Tessa checks her phone with a sigh of relief when there were no messages. Before she sat back in the chair she took the new SIM and changed the old one. She also made some changes to her essay tutorial site so this harassment would not happen again. There's only so much that she could do and she hopes this is the last of it.
-o0o—
Marcus should have taken a relaxing shower right after his jog but he wanted to make that breakfast for Tessa. He wanted to get to know her. He likes her. He likes her very much but they come from different cultures…his life is different from hers. But he's to drawn to her and he doesn't want to over analyze what he feels for her. Damn. Her voice, her eyes, her smile, all of it unsettles him in a very physical way. Marcus shakes his head slightly. The feeling she brings to him is so strong and…
He's curious and he's worried. He got this 'thump' in his chest after Tessa told him about her ex.; the lies her former boyfriend told her.
And he's carrying the biggest fucking lie and he was unprepared to answer even the basic of basic questions.
What's your job? Oh, I just head one the most clandestine anti-crime group in the world but…I can't tell you!
Who do you work for? The American government. Cool, right? But it's a secret!
That's not the worst of it all. This one gave Marcus the chills.
Back when he was still a field operative Marcus has never slipped up, not once; not in hairy situations, not even with the barrel of a gun pointed at his face, not even when he was about to be tortured. He never slipped up. To slip up is to die. It can get people killed and jeopardize the mission.
So that being said, how many times has he slipped up in two days? Almost three. That is not a good number.
Whether she was interested in him as well or that she's just curious like any normal person would he found he's been struggling…he's trying his hardest not to tell her his cover story. But she told him about her ex and that wouldn't do. If she even gets a glimpse of what his real life is like. If she discovers who he is…what he does…
What would he do? What would he say?
What would she think? What would her reaction be?
Goddammit! Marcus's hands ball into tight fists above his head on the bed. What's the right thing to do…
-o0o—
There! Angrily Tessa snapped close the back cover of her mobile phone. Transferring all of her mobile contacts again and all the kinds of information and files she has is such a hassle but Tessa felt as if a heavy weight has been removed from her shoulders as she clicks 'yes' to power down her tablet. This time she made sure that the changes she made about her personal information would be 'harass-proof' at her side job page.
Tessa checks her phone one last time and realizes Marcus needs to have a copy of her new number he being her 'boss' and all. Yeah, he denies that title but what else is he in her life but her superior? She wrote her new number on a piece of paper to slip it under his door. Tessa drops the mobile in her bag, gathers her tablet. Her eye lands on something in the corner of the dining area: Marcus's laundry basket.
Hmm, handsome but forgetful.
-o0o—
"Wake up!" It was a whisper, urgent.
"Hmm! I'm sleepy. Go away…hmm!" Tessa frowns, eyes closed.
"Get up!"
A strong hand shook her again. "Hmm! Why?"
"What are you doing here?"
"What?" she groans with a little bit of anger. She sleepily slaps the hand away. Her eyes opened a little. "Jun?" Tessa became suddenly halfway lucid. "What…what are you doing here?"
"Be quiet…" Then he puts a 'quiet' finger on his lips. Jun points, eyes siding from her to something somewhere beside her.
"What?" Tessa frowns getting a little annoyed until Jun reached over and turns her head….
