As an adult remembering back on my childhood obsession with Vampire Knight (specifically Zero and Yuki), I realized how bland the romance is and unrealistic. I want to write a fic that's a lot more real and representative of adult relationships which Zero and Yuki should have grown into... They certainly weren't kids forever, and this fic explores legit realities of adult relationships which includes a lot of sex haha. Get ready for a Zeki-centric fanfic that reflects my take on adult relationships, which are probably super westernized but if you're here for it, join me on my first attempt at a fanfic. Please go easy on me lol. Rate and review!

This chapter explores the encounters between Zero and Yuki as she reinstates the night class, so it's takes place around volume 15. Being around each other often again is complicated. It's hard for the both of them since they were so focused on avoiding each other previously. But seeing each other again brings back old feelings – feelings that never went away.

I do not own Vampire Knight or it's characters! Matsuri Hino does!

Chapter 1 – Encounters

As Zero walks down the halls of Cross Academy, he is reminded of everything he's spent the last year trying to forget. These hallways and classrooms are the same ones he suffered in while agonizing his fate as a vampire and his unrequited love for a certain mahogany-eyed princess. Speaking of which, he was headed to her temporary office now. Yuki had called a meeting between the two of them to reiterate their roles at the newly reinstated school. Yuki was taking on the role of headmaster at the moment, as it was her idea to get Cross Academy up and running again, but she was also attending as a student. Zero, on the other hand, was on campus in a patrol position. As a vampire hunter next in line to President of the Hunters Association, he was essentially placed there to reprimand any night class students in the event of a rule break AKA. attacking any day class students for blood. Both their roles were very clear. Zero knew this meeting was more to ease the tension between him and Yuki since they would be seeing each other much more often now. He was not looking forward to this meeting – or so he told himself. A small part of him accepted the fact that he would be face to face with his childhood best friend again, and this made his expression soften.

Yuki sighs and fiddles with her pen as she waits for Zero in the office. Her heart rate quickens as she thinks of her old friend, now enemy unfortunately. She never thought of Zero as an enemy, however. He would always be the boy she wanted to protect despite him being a hunter, destined to kill her kind. She thought back to his threat on that fateful day – that he would eventually be the one to kill her. Although it did incite some fear in her, she mostly felt pain. Pain that someone she cared for so dearly could express that much hatred toward her. She hoped with all her might that he didn't mean it. She hoped that he still had some heart left for her, because she'd be lying to herself if she said she wasn't excited to be back. She had missed Cross Academy a lot and most of all, she was excited to see Zero. It gave her a sense of warmth and familiarity, which she hadn't felt in a while since Kaname disappeared. Her throat starts to feel scratchy, and she begins to hear Zero's footsteps. She quickly fixes her hair right before he opens the door.

As Zero opens the door to the office, he sees Yuki sitting at a desk while writing down tomorrow's class itinerary. She looks up at him. He notices that she has make up on. Earlier that day when he first arrived at the job, she was bare faced. His intuitive thinking picked up on it immediately, but he didn't want to assume too much based on it.

"Zero," Yuki begins, "please sit down."

He pulls out a chair and sits down with a thump. He's tired. Tired of his cruel fate that keeps bringing him back to the girl he longed for and ultimately had to watch leave in the arms of another. Yuki gets up and clears her throat, "Zero, I set up this meeting to ensure there is no tension between us. We are acting in the best interest of Cross Academy. If we are both do our jobs, there should be no animosity between us, despite what happened in the past." She blushes a bit at the end.

"Of course," he agrees plainly and then says, "Well then, is that it?"

"Well, yes." Yuki states.

"All right. Well good night then, Yuki." Zero says calmy and gets up to leave.

Once the door shuts, Yuki is left standing in the office with her hand clenched at her chest. On the other side, Zero is fiercely walking away, already feeling his blood lust acting up.

The next day, Yuki is power walking through the hallways. Her duties as headmaster and student are overwhelming, and she finds it difficult to be punctual for everything. As she rushes to her next class, she quickly turns the corner and collides with a massive wall, dropping all her books. She's disheveled and looks up to see said wall, Zero. He looks annoyed but starts picking up her books for her. "You'd think as a vampire, let alone a pureblood, you would be less of a klutz," he remarks.

"Some things never change," she says with a smile and scratches the back of her head. He let no emotion render his face, but his heart skipped a beat.

A couple days go by and nothing eventful takes place at the academy. Zero is making his usual rounds now that class is over, and the night class students are heading back to the Moon Dorms. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, and Zero is about to write off tonight as another solid shift. Suddenly, he sees two students, white uniforms, sneaking towards the Sun Dorms. He marches over but is beat by long locks of brown. Yuki appears to have jumped down from the floor above, landing right in front of Zero. She brings out Artemis from behind her with a swift motion. Zero backs up quickly to dodge the weapon, protecting his face with his hand, but the weapon slices his hand slightly. Yuki notices this and looks back at Zero, nodding to acknowledge him. She then turns to the two students, "You two are out past curfew. Return to your dorms immediately." Yuki is firm with her tone because she notices their fangs are protruding, indicating blood lust.

The students look at both Yuki and Zero and know better. They know that they would be no match against a pureblood and the strongest vampire hunter in history. They comply and go back to their dorms.

"Did you hire me just to do my job?" Zero asks Yuki, his tone moody just like the good old days.

"I thought you already went home for the day," she looks at his hand. It's stopped bleeding by now but it's definitely bruising up. She catches a whiff of his blood and feels her knees weaken.

"Sorry about that. Let me bandage it up for you," Yuki offers.

"It's fine, I'll be okay." Zero protests.

"I insist." Yuki reaches for his hand. She drags him to the nurses office. Zero doesn't say anything the whole time. He's not fighting her either – he just follows. When they get there, Yuki grabs the bandages and wraps his hand in silence as well. There's so much unsaid between these two, the room seems like it's going to burst. Yuki thinks back to the days she used to barge into Zero's room and chat about whatever was on her mind. Now, she had a million things to say but no words. In a way, she was glad they weren't talking. The scent of his blood so nearby dried up her throat, she would have been lost for words anyways.

Yuki finishes with the bandages and is saddened that their momentary interaction is about to end. She then looks up in realization and finally breaks the silence, "Here! Take some blood tablets to help you heal faster. I know it's kept hidden in here for night class students only."

She then steps on a stool to reach the higher cabinets. At the angles she's reaching at, Zero catches a glimpse under her skirt. He automatically looks away, a flush appearing on his cheeks.

A week later, Cross Academy has an open house in an attempt to get more student registrations. Yuki is heading towards all the festivities with her hands full of balloons, pamphlets, and activities for the entrance way. There will be a raffle for one lucky winner to get free textbooks for a semester. Yuki, the klutz that she is, drops the raffle balls and the wind blows them into the fountain pool. "Oh no!" she screams, totally flustered.

She quickly sets down everything on a nearby table. When she turns around to go pick up the balls, she sees that Zero is already in the pool collecting the colourful, numbered balls. His shoes are on the side of the fountain, but the rest of his clothing went in with him, thus he is soaking wet. "Thank you so much, Zero. I'm so sorry, you didn't have to do all this," Yuki frantically apologizes.

"Let me get you some dry clothes. I know the Chairman still has some stuff in his closet here. Follow me," she motions at him to come her way.

They arrive at the Chairman's old chambers and are overwhelmed with nostalgia from the home they spent their early years together. Zero almost didn't want to step in, feeling his heart clam up. He goes into the Chariman's room and takes some random clothing from the closet to change into. There's no mirror so he opts to go into his old bedroom. It's empty with just a bed, some drawers and a long mirror. He looks at his reflection, recalling the times he would stare into this same mirror loathing his own existence. His eyebrows scrunch. He then sees Yuki appear behind him. He turns around and says, "I fit into the old man's suit pretty well actually."

Yuki smiles and takes a step forward. "You look handsome," she says softly and fixes his tie, tightening it.

"You don't have to do that," Zero says annoyed.

"I wanted to," she replies and looks up at him.

They stare into each other's eyes as if yearning for something. Zero sees a twinkle in Yuki's eyes, and he wants to chase it, but knows he has no right to. The moment is broken as Zero looks away. He starts to walk out of the room, but Yuki stops him, "Zero I…I've missed you."

He's shocked. There's a long silence, and he's unable to turn around to face her. He couldn't look in her eyes now without falling in love all over again. Yuki tries to find the nerve to say more, but she's shaking. He then relieves the tension and says, "I spent a year trying to forget you, so that I could escape the pain of losing the best thing that ever happened to me. Please don't let my efforts be for nothing. Please Yuki."

"I think you've missed me too," she inserts boldly. "I can feel something Zero. I haven't let go and I don't think you have either."

He ignores her statement and responds, "You're betrothed to Kaname."

"I know. But my heart yearns for you. I can't close the door to it just yet. Not when I'm here, close to you again. I have to know, could there be something between us?" her eyes beg for a response.

Zero immediately replies, "No. I don't feel anything for you."

"Don't lie to me Zero," Yuki raises her voice.

He grips the door frame, gritting his teeth. Lastly, he turns around and says, "I'm not lying." Before she can say anymore, he leaves.

Tears pool in Yuki's eyes. She's not convinced.

The next couple of weeks are paired with conflict at Cross Academy. There appears to be a contraband blood tablet circling around. Those in possession are crazed in blood lust after consumption. However, they seem to be soothed by drinking Yuki's blood. The state of the school is in mayhem. It doesn't seem that Yuki can contain the situation much longer before it turns into a big fiasco. Zero confronts Yuki and says she's too weak to handle everything. She's obviously very thirsty, and having others drink from her as well is not helping. He drags her into the woods to drink his blood. She's hesitant at first, because she was clearly told to not drink from anyone else besides Kaname. She didn't want to betray him, but she knows she's dying of thirst, and he is nowhere to be found. Zero then bites his wrist and offers it to Yuki, but in a swift motion, she goes for his neck, knocking both of them to the ground.

Yuki knows that when drinking Zero's blood, she will be able to look around at his deepest feelings. She looks into his lavender eyes. "I just wanted to take a good look at the person whose blood I'm going to drink: Mr. Future Hunter Society President, who claims he doesn't love me." She made sure to extend her voice after 'claims' to indicate her disbelief in his earlier statement. Zero knows she'll be able to look around for the answer as well. His face remains unphased, and he lies, "I have no feelings for you anymore."

Yuki's lips near his neck. She's intoxicated by his scent. It's so familiar yet so foreign. She knew she shouldn't be here, but that made her want a taste that much more…She then extends her tongue to lick his neck. Now there was no turning back. She needed his blood. Upon biting his neck and that first drip of blood, her mind instantly soothes, and she's surprised at how delicious Zero's blood is. She bites in deeper now and violently starts drinking. It's as though her body was begging for this moment. As her mind regulates after all the excitement, she starts to pry around Zero's thoughts. She's flooded with memories of their time together, but in a different point of view. The memories are from Zero's perspective. And in all of them, Yuki is glowing. She's so bright, it's almost blinding. Is this how Zero views me? He was undoubtedly in love with her. Beyond the memories, she sees his future hopes of what they could be. Zero dreams of them being a couple, getting married and having kids. At the sight of this, she's shocked back into reality and pulls away quickly, gasping for air. Yuki wipes the blood from her lips and looks up at Zero. "I knew it," she breathes.

Zero, unable to deny his feelings anymore, gives in. His shoulders relax back, and he looks at Yuki with a helpless expression. Yuki is overwhelmed now, knowing all the love he has for her. Suddenly, something takes over, and she goes in for a kiss. Zero shudders, eyes shocked. However, he quickly accepts it and kisses her back, deepening the kiss. All the tension, especially sexual, built up between them is letting out at this point. The two can't stop kissing. Zero removes Yuki coat, and she responds by loosening his tie and unbuttoning his vest and dress shirt. They now add tongue to the kisses, and only pull away for short breaths of air. Zero grips her thigh, moving his hand up and under her skirt. Then he pulls away. With concern in his eyes, he says, "We shouldn't go any further or I won't be able to stop myself."

Yuki looks back into his eyes deeply. She's also scared. Scared about the consequences but more scared of her feelings. She wanted the man in front of her more than her own fiancé. She felt guilty about this, but let her feelings take the wheel. "I don't want you to stop," Yuki says as she unbuttons her blouse, letting it fall to the ground and revealing her bra. Zero is in disbelief of the sight in front of him. What am I getting myself into? He stares at her breasts, not too long as to make her uncomfortable. He looks into her eyes and his confusion is apparent. He looks as though he's contemplating life and death, which he very well is. And then he says, "fuck it" as he pulls her in and takes her to the ground.
