Chapter 3
Edward POV
Edward woke up the next day to the thought that the night before had been a crazy dream. The only thing that told him that he had actually gone on a date with Bella Swan was the suit that was hanging on his closet door. He smiled as he remembered how beautiful Bella was when he picked her up from her apartment and then at the restaurant.
He was so glad that he had finally got everything out in the open - he just had to pray that she would give him a chance to show her that he had changed.
He got ready for the day with a slight spring in his step just thinking about the possibility of seeing her again - he just had to figure out how. The two of them only shared one class together but that was on Monday and that was just too long to go without seeing her. Looking at the clock he hoped that he would be able to get to her before her Thursday classes.
He ran out of his apartment that he shared with Jasper and hurried to his car knowing that he would have to hurry to be able to get to her apartment and then back to the school with enough time to be able to get to class on time.
The line at the coffee shop was long but, for once, the line went quick and he was soon at the counter getting himself and Bella a couple cups. Luckily, her apartment was a couple blocks away and soon he was at her door.
On the way to her he was nothing but confident about his abilities to get her to give him a chance but, as he stood outside her door, he felt the nerves in his stomach and knew that there was a chance that he was making a big mistake and that she would never feel anything more than friendship for him.
As he stood there deciding what he was going to do he heard movement behind the door and before he could do anything it was swung open and Alice was standing on the other side watching him with a smile on her face.
"I was wondering how long you were going to stand there but I decided to give you a break." She smiled wide at him.
"How did you know I was out here?" He asked her, amazed.
"I had a feeling." Was all she said. He opened his mouth as if he was going to say something but changed his mind at the last moment, sometimes it was easier to ignore Alice's quirkiness then to question her. "Come on in, Bella is in her room getting dressed before her morning classes." She motioned Edward forward and with just a slight hint of hesitation he followed her to their little kitchenette and placed their coffee cups on the little island in the center of the kitchen.
"Did she say anything about last night?" Edward couldn't help himself from asking. If she truly did not enjoy herself she would have told Alice and Edward would be able to leave without putting himself all the way out there.
"She didn't tell me much." At the look on his face she continued, "That's not a bad thing, it's actually pretty good - it means that she enjoyed herself so much she didn't want to tell me and have me telling her 'I told you so'," Alice told him.
"Why would you tell her that?"
"She was really nervous about the date and pretty much convinced herself that you were going to be a complete jerk and she wasn't going to have any fun. I kept telling her that I trusted you to not hurt her but I don't think she really believed me. If she hadn't had fun then she wouldn't have wasted any time in telling me," she explained.
"I hope you are right, Alice," Edward murmured just before a door down the short hallway opened and Bella came into the living room and kitchen area. She stopped abruptly when she noticed Edward standing behind Alice. Alice just laughed before saying goodbye to Bella and heading towards the door.
"Wait, why are you leaving?" Bella asked Alice.
"I don't think that you'll be needing me for a ride," Alice said. She looked Edward in the eye; he smiled at her, silently thanking the little pixie. He gave her just what he wanted - more time alone with Bella.
"I was hoping that I could take you to school, Bella," Edward mumbled. He was worried that she would turn him down but when he saw the quick spark in her eyes before she pushed it away, he knew that he had done the right thing.
"Okay," she told him, quietly.
As Alice left the two of them alone Edward could tell that Bella was nervous and, oddly enough, it made him feel better.
"I didn't want to wait any longer to see you. I brought you coffee," he said while motioning to the cups in front of him. She grabbed the one that he held out to her and, with a slight smile on her face, took a quick sip.
"First the flowers and now the coffee, how did you know that this was my normal order?" She asked him quizzically.
"Maybe I'm just exceptionally observant," he said. She just rolled her eyes at him before grabbing her backpack that was sitting by the door. "Do you not believe me?" He asked her as they left her apartment.
"It's just hard to believe, I never thought that you were anything more than a player but know I'm seeing this whole new side of you and it's just going to take some getting used to," she explained to him.
"I can understand that," he muttered. He wasn't happy that it was so hard for her to trust him but he could grasp her reasonings. "So what is your schedule like today?" He asked her to change the subject to a better topic.
"I have my Child Psychology course and my Teaching Methods classes in the morning and then after lunch I have my shift at the library until 6." He raised his eyebrows when she was finished - she was a lot busier than he would have expected. He smiled at that thought, nothing about this woman should surprise him.
"That's a full plate, what are you majoring in?"
"Elementary Education, I want to be a second grade teacher." He could hear the passion in her voice from that one sentence.
"I know that you are going to make an excellent teacher," he told her.
"Thank you," she said when they arrived at his car. He once again opened her car door for her and felt a slight warmth inside of him when he saw the blush fill her cheeks at the gesture. He was glad that he was able to catch her off guard - it gave him a weird sort of pleasure that he wasn't who she thought he was.
"So, what's your major?" She asked him. It was strange that the two of them spent so much time together that he knew many of her favorite things but didn't know too much about her day to day life.
"American Literature," he said. She raised her eyebrows at that and didn't speak for several moments. "What?" He asked, self consciously.
"Nothing, that was just the last thing that I expected," she mumbled.
"What did you expect?" He asked as he pulled out of the parking lot and turned towards the school, it was a short drive but he wished it was longer so he could spend just a few more moments alone with Bella.
"I don't really know, but definitely not that." She winked as she said that.
"It's okay, a lot of people are surprised when they hear my major. I keep that part of myself underwraps, it's not something that I show a lot of people." She gave him a small smile at that, it was true that he didn't open up to too many people in his life. Jasper didn't even find out until the two of them were friends for a year - it wasn't that he was ashamed of his major but he didn't want people to think that he was someone that he wasn't.
"So, what do you want to do after college?" Bella asked Edward when they were stopped at a red light.
"To write the next great American novel," he told her.
"Really?"
"Most definitely," he said. The two of them had talked about books on a couple occasions so he knew that she was a big bookworm - if anyone would understand his affinity towards the written word it was going to be Bella.
"Have you written anything yet?"
"I've gotten a few ideas down but I haven't had much to be inspired by for the last couple of years," he told her. What he didn't tell her was that last night when he got back from their date he was able to jot down the beginning of what he knew in his soul was going to be his first novel. His inspiration was sitting in the car next to him.
"That's amazing, I love to read but I have never been able to write a story. Can I read your book when you are done with it?" She asked him teasingly.
"Maybe," he joked with her. "So, can I ask you something?" He asked her after a few moments of silence, he could see the college coming up in front of him - he didn't want this car ride to ever end.
"Anything," Bella replied.
"I have a friend that is interested in a girl - they went out on an amazing date and now he can't get her out of his head. He wants to ask her out but he's worried that she doesn't feel the same way. What should he do?" Edward asked her.
"Hmm, and who is this friend, may I ask?" Bella asked. Edward laughed to himself knowing that she didn't buy his little story for a second.
"No one you know." Bella just shook her head at his reply, he would be worried by her silence if he couldn't see in her eyes and know that she was having fun.
"Well, I would tell this guy to just ask the girl. You never know, she could feel the same way about him as he does about her." Edward looked in her eyes for a second before looking back at the road.
It was silent for a few more moments as Edward pulled into the student parking lot and stopped the car once he found a good enough spot. He took a deep breath before turning to face Bella who was looking at him expectantly.
"Edward Cullen, if I didn't know you any better I would say that you were nervous." She shot him a brilliant smile that stole his breath away, he felt the butterflies lessen in his stomach but his heart continued to race on - he knew that last one had nothing to do with nerves but more to do with the brown eyed beauty sitting next to him.
"Will you go out with me again?"
It was a scary thing when one person held so much power over you, she had the ability to make him extraordinarily happy or crush him with one word. Normally, Edward didn't like to be in this kind of position where he was seen as vulnerable to anyone that wasn't in his family but, with Bella, he knew that she would never intentionally hurt him. With her, what you saw was exactly who she was.
"I would love to go out with you," Bella said, quietly.
Edward smiled widely at her words and reached over to grab her hand that was sitting on her lap and giving it a slight squeeze.
"Thank you."
