Survival Situations

Summary: A short series focusing on JP's paleobotanist Ellie Sattler. Follow her adventures to and back from the park's maintenance shed, with an altered take on her encounter with the park's deadliest velociraptor, often known as "The Big One". Rather an in and out operation, Ellie endures a perilous ordeal while escaping from a vicious raptor. Can she outwit an intelligent predator or succumb as prey to the hungry pursuer?

Chapter 1: Unexpected Delays

Emergency Bunker, Southwest of Jurassic Park's Visitor's Center, Morning.

Three minutes turned into fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes turned into an hour. Something went wrong. That much was obvious. The park's chief engineer Ray Arnold should have been back by now... but he wasn't. And yet, deep within her heart, Ellie knew that the island's systems wouldn't be turning on anytime soon.

Pacing around the stuffy bunker didn't do Ellie any favors. Each time she glanced over to the exit, hoping in vain to see Ray return in triumph continue to dwindle with each passing minute. Something went wrong.

Impatience taking the best of her, Ellie decides to take matters in her hands on turning the park's power on, her declaration not going unnoticed from John Hammond and a rather snide comment uttered from the millionaire's mouth. "It ought to be me you know."

Mild frustration was all she felt towards John Hammond. The millionaire's comment, whether intentional or not, was insensitive in every way towards Ellie.

The implication is clear as day on what John meant. Ellie scoffs in irritation as simply yelling at the elderly man wouldn't prove a point. Whatever the case, she's not for one to sit idly around for help. One of the many things Ellie picked up from her mentor's teachings is that someone in her field is always a person of action. And action she'll take for the park's restoration of power.

First thing first is gear. With power out, the maintenance shed is its mostly likely going to be without any lights, making it impossible to see inside the building. The paleobotanist starts a search around the bunker for anything of use to aid in her task. Towards the side of the bunker something catches Ellie's eye. A utility belt with a corded flashlight stuffed in one of the belt's pouches hanging on a nearby shelf, that'll come in handy. Ellie fastens the belt around her waist before testing out the flashlight. The torch's powerful luminous beam checks out to Ellie's approval. Everything is in working order.

The remaining survivors consisting of Ellie, the park ranger Robert Muldoon, and John Hammond gather around an injured Ian Malcolm as John lays out the blueprints of the maintenance shed he stumbled across in a nearby cabinet. The game plan being John will instruct Ellie on how to restore power while she'll be out in the field following said instructions. While it sounds good on paper, communication between the parties will be impossible as there're no working phones or intercoms. A hint from John's eyes gave Ellie her answer.

Following the direction to where John's facing, Ellie spots several Motorola Saber Radios, Walkie Talkies, sitting comfortably in a charging station. Ellie grabs two and a headset for her own walkie talkie. After setting one walkie talkie into her belt and handing John his own, begrudgingly from the prior remark, she was set.

Though Ellie's intent on restoring power, the thought of venturing outside with dangerous dinosaurs between her and the maintenance shed wasn't comforting given that she has no means of defending herself and is equipped with nothing but a flashlight and walkie talkie, the two aforementioned pieces of equipment not being an ideal defensive measure against a dinosaur.

She's thankful that the park's warden and ranger Robert Muldoon decides to tag along with a Franchi SPAS- 12 shotgun in hand, especially considering she foolishly forgotten that she has no idea on navigating around the island. Muldoon now armed, Ellie and her escort head up the stairs to the emergency bunker's exit.

John's comment crept back in Ellie's thoughts and already she's smirking to the prospects of sharing "discussions of sexism in survival situations" towards John. When this is all over, John's in for quite a conversation.

A/N: That concludes Chapter 1. Thank you again for taking the time in reading this tale. Admittingly this is my take on doing a Jurassic Park story so whatever feedback you have please share as I do wish to continue improving. That said take care and enjoy your day! - Poshil
