Rosie is the Honey Bear fairy. There's also fairies named Amy, Lucy, and Alyssa.
"Is there anything edible in this place?" Ray quipped, scanning the menu.
"Everything is edible," retorted Lucy. "I liked most of the options. They were delicious."
"For you, maybe," Ray said, making a face. "We should've brought our own food."
"If you don't like it, you can have some of the bugs and worms outside," Lucy suggested.
Ray's face screwed up in disgust. "Eww! No way."
"Maybe we should visit the shop in Werewolf Village again," Kiran suggested. "I liked the vegetarian options, even though I like meat. And that's saying something."
"You guys are monsters," Lucy pointed out. "You should be able to eat anything."
"Oh, yeah," muttered Ray unhappily.
"I could catch bugs for you," Lucy suggested.
"No thanks, Mom," said Ray. He didn't want to be a monster if that was what they had to eat.
Lucy smiled. "I used to feel the same way. I gagged when seeing other monsters eating insects, but after my fangs grew in, I gained a new appetite. Now I consider them an occasional treat."
"Well, they haven't grown in yet," said Ray, opening the fridge.
"True," Lucy conceded. "Until then, you'll have to make do."
"There's nothing good in the fridge, either... wait..." Ray stared at the tiny purple jar in the fridge. "There actually is something edible here." He took it out. "Look. It's a jar of jam."
"Really?" Kiran walked over, inspecting it. "Actually, it looks more like peanut butter."
Ray opened it and dipped a finger in. "Yeah, it does," he said. "It feels like peanut butter, too." He raised it to his mouth and licked his finger. Then his eyes widened. "Oh my god! It actually tastes delicious."
"Really?" Kiran asked excitedly. "Let me try some."
Ray handed the jar to him, and Kiran enjoyed it as well. "Mm. It's so good," he said. "You should try it as well, Mom."
"No thanks, dear," said Lucy. "I'm full."
"At least there's something edible here," said Ray, inspecting the bare glass jar. "I don't know what it is, though. It's like peanut butter, but it's purple. And there's no labels or descriptions on the jar."
"At least the housekeepers gave us a treat," said Kiran, eating some more and placing it back in the fridge. "It's even better than peanut butter."
"I'm allergic to peanut butter," said Lucy.
"I don't think it is, Mom," said Ray. It just feels like it."
"Well, still, I think it'd be safer for me not to eat it," said Lucy. "But I'm glad you enjoy it. Maybe you should try eating something else. Like bugs."
"Uh, no thanks," said Ray. He suddenly felt very light-headed. It must be from the thought of eating bugs. But something else was making him dizzy. He glanced at his brother, and noted that he seemed to be feeling the same way. His glasses fell to the floor, and he rubbed his eyes before picking them up.
"It has a weird aftertaste, though," said Kiran. "Maybe we shouldn't eat too much of it."
"Yeah," agreed Ray, the light-headed feeling disappearing.
Ray reached for a glass of water, suddenly feeling thirsty, but couldn't quite reach it. It seemed too high.
"I feel like I could fall asleep on the spot," Lucy moaned. "That massage almost put me to sleep in the salon, but I managed to resist."
"Then go to sleep, Mom," said Kiran, watching her eyes fluttering closed. She slumped forward on the sofa.
"I'm so thirsty," complained Ray, his throat suddenly feeling very dry, and also strange. It felt like his mouth was bouncing up and down. "Could you give me a glass of water?"
"Get it yourself," Kiran retorted, but he reached for a glass. Ray rolled his eyes at the contradicting action. But Kiran struggled reaching it as well. Ray stared at him. He had always been short, which Ray teased him about, but not that short. He was even lower than the counter now.
Ray realized he was the same height! He tried to reach up, but couldn't reach anything. He stared upwards. The ceiling looked very far away. Was this how Kiran felt, being so short? If so, Ray felt bad for him.
"What's happening?" Kiran moaned, sounding as confused as he was scared. So maybe he wasn't used to being this short either.
Ray's shirt suddenly felt very wide and loose, and his shoes were huge, which was good, because they had been too small before. But now they were too big. His jeans were loose now as well, instead of tight-fitting. He screamed and tried to grab onto his brother, only to grab his glasses instead, which he had to use both hands to hold. Ray screamed louder as he felt himself falling, thinking he was going to hit the hard ground, but instead fell in a heap amongst his clothes, less winded than he was terrified.
He heard Kiran yelling as well, yelling in Indian. Ray couldn't understand a word, and he could barely even hear his voice. It was much softer now, as well as muffled. Ray tried yelling to him, and found his voice much softer than usual as well. The panic only made him yell louder, but even then, he sounded like a mousy. A squeaky, tiny mouse. He felt like one, too.
He supposed he should've felt grateful that he was lying amongst his clothes. He covered his body with them, trembling from embarrassment instead of the cold. He hoped his brother had the sense to stay hidden there as well. He cringed a moment later as he heard Kiran shuffling, and realized he didn't.
"What's going on?" His accent was far more recognizable now, and his voice panicked and squeaky. "What happened to us? I feel so weird. Ray, what—"
"Don't look at me!" Ray yelled. "I'm naked!"
"Oh. I am as well," said Kiran, making Ray's face heat up. "I guess we must have shrunk." There was a silence, and Ray knew his brother must be gazing around at everything in awe. "Oh, wow. Everything looks so different now. But maybe that's just because I don't have my glasses."
"Cool?" Ray shrieked, hating how high-pitched his voice sounded. "We might as well be mice!"
"Ray, calm down," Kiran instructed, actually managing to sound calm. "Oh, my glasses are there. But they're too big for me to wear now."
"I think that's the least of our worries," Ray snapped as Kiran came closer to inspect his glasses.
"Calm down," Kiran repeated. "I'll just tell Mom. She can help us."
"Oh, right." Kiran relaxed slightly. He heard Ray run across the floorboards, his footsteps sounding like a mouse scrambling across the floor (Ray now felt bad for all of them that his mother had eaten). Then he winced as he heard him yelling.
"Mom! MOM! Wake up! Ray and I need your help! Wake uuuuuuuuu—"
"Shut up, idiot!" Ray snapped. "She can't hear us. Your voice is too soft. It sounds even more annoying than it does usually."
"Well, so does yours," Kiran retorted. "I'll just climb up the sofa."
"Don't!" Ray lifted a piece of fabric, but then remembered he was naked. He stayed under, and heard Kiran panting as he scrambled up. Then he heard a yell, and a thump.
"Are you alright?" Ray yelled, his heart racing.
"Ohhhh." Kiran moaned. "I was never good at climbing. Remember when we went rock climbing, and I was too scared to come down?"
"And I made fun of you until you came down," Ray said. "Did you break anything?"
"Both my arms, and both my legs," Kiran groaned.
Ray rolled his eyes. "Stop being dramatic."
"Okay, just one of my arms and legs," Kiran joked.
"Can you stand?" Ray called, wishing he wasn't naked.
There was a pause. "Yeah," Kiran called. "I didn't break anything. But I can't climb up again. Hey, yell with me, Ray! Maybe we can get his attention."
"No," Ray protested, but Kiran started screaming at the top of his lungs again.
"HELP US! HEEEEELP US! CAN YOU HEEEEEAR ME? WE NEEEED HELLLLLP!"
"SHUT UP!" Ray yelled back, even louder. His voice was really starting to get on his nerves. "I'll actually break your legs and arms if you don't stop yelling like that."
"Then what should we do?" Kiran snapped back.
"Can't you get her attention in another way?" Ray suggested. "Grab her clothes or something?"
"They're too high up." There was a pause. "Ow. It hurts to jump."
"Maybe you could write a message," Ray suggested.
"Great idea! But how?" Kiran didn't sound sarcastic.
"I don't know," Ray shrugged. "There has to be a pen lying around... somewhere."
Kiran groaned. "Well, I don't know how I can even hold it in my hand. We'd both need to. And you're not coming out."
"Do you think I want you to see me naked?" Ray snapped. "Or that I want to see you naked? No, thanks. I want to keep my sanity intact."
"Come on" Kiran urged. "I've seen you naked before. Remember when I went into your room while you were changing?"
"After I told you you couldn't come in," Ray said. "And I rightfully gave you a black eye."
"It hurt!" Kiran protested indignantly. "Maybe I can find some scissors to cut up your clothes to fit you."
"You're not cutting up my clothes!" Ray snapped.
"Oh, quit being a baby and come out," Kiran urged. "I won't look at you. I'll shield my eyes or something. We have more important things to worry about than modesty."
"No," Ray stubbornly protested.
"Fine. Be like that," snapped Kiran. "Leave me to do all the work."
A few seconds later, Ray heard Kiran utter a shrill, high-pitched scream, even louder than when he had been yelling at their mother. He was just about to yell at him, and maybe tease him for sounding so much like a girl, when he heard him scrabbling away.
"Where are you going, idiot?" Ray yelled. He thought he heard something else scrabbling around the floor as well. He froze. Had someone seen them?
He pushed past his clothes and searched for his brother. He had run out through the open door, a tiny white mouse following him. Ray resisted the urge to laugh. He had always found it hilarious that his brother was terrified of mice. But at the moment, it looked pretty intimidating to him too. It was almost bigger than him.
He watched the mouse scurry outside, and hesitated before running up to the door. Their mother had forgotten to close it. Outside, he saw the mouse scurry into a hole on the other wall, and Kiran run down the hallway. Ray was about to call for him when a girl walked down the corridor, holding a huge red-haired doll.
Kiran didn't notice her, but she did. She bent down, observing him. "Ooh! Doll," she giggled, picking him up. Ray resisted the urge to laugh. Kiran struggled in her hold and pounded the sides of her fist with his own fists. She dropped him in pain and surprise.
"Mean doll," she muttered, staring at him with a hurt look on her face.
Suddenly, Kiran seemed to notice what was going on. He started waving his arms and yelling to the girl, presumably trying to tell her he wasn't a doll, but she just screamed and backed away. She burst into tears and ran back down the hallway. Kiran went silent, disappointed.
"Nice going!" Ray called to him. Kiran jumped, glancing around. Ray kept his body in the room, but poked his head out, yelling to his brother.
Kiran finally saw him. He started walking back inside the room. Ray hissed at him when he came too close.
"Stop right there! I'm still naked," he reminded. Then he groaned. He had been so far away that he hadn't been able to see his brother clearly, but now he could. He closed his eyes in disgust.
Kiran paid no notice. "It's a shame that girl ran off. She was our only hope."
"You scared her off," Ray reminded, still keeping his eyes closed. "Maybe it isn't a good idea to yell and move when people see us. They'll just run away."
"Yeah," Kiran agreed. "I'll wait for them to pick me up, and talk to them later. And if they don't notice me, then I'll yell at them."
"Hey, I think she was one of the girls there when you took off the mask," Ray said. "The little Asian girl with headphones."
"Oh, yeah," said Kiran. "Her dad put the mask on before, apparently."
"I think this is worse," Ray quipped.
"Easy for you to say!" Kiran retorted. "You weren't the one wearing the mask." Then he sighed. "But yeah, it is worse."
Suddenly, they froze as they heard someone else walking down the hallway. Ray ducked back into the room, while Kiran lay flat on his back, hoping he had something to cover himself. He felt his face heating up as he heard the person stop and bend down.
"So this is the doll Ashley saw," she said in a curious voice. Kiran tried not to struggle as she picked him up, not wanting her to drop him. It had winded him when the other girl did that. This girl clutching him around the waist was almost making him suffocate. "Strange. He seems very still and quiet. Maybe it was just Ashley's imagination."
Then the girl paused. "Eww, he's naked! Well, that won't do. I have to put some clothes on him. He can be another doll for my collection."
Kiran felt horrified at the idea, and was tempted to protest, but she had straightened up and he didn't want to fall all the way down. He tried not to wriggle as she made her way down the hallway, humming to herself. He knew his brother had to be laughing his head off.
Ray was. He had heard the entire exchange, and had a hand stuffed into his mouth to stifle his guffaws. He wished he could see the look on Kiran's face. He giggled more as he imagined him sitting in a dollhouse, dressed up and drinking tea with a bunch of other dolls. Still, he had to admire his brother slightly. He probably wouldn't have been able to stay so silent. How long would it take for her to realize he wasn't a doll?
I love writing their brother relationship. I don't think you become naked in the Purple Peanut Butter book, but the main character does in Night of the Giant Everything, another book involving shrinking.
