"Is this poison?" the words left Ayako's clammy lips before she even opened her eyes, feeling the stinging sensation that were developing in her lungs.
"Damn it, of course it is." Waver's annoyed voice said in response, with the first thing she sees being the Pseudo-Servant securing the area they arrived in.
"Don't worry, Circe's got this." Said Enchantress announced, a spell already whirling around her staff, before it converged on the Masters.
"I didn't even notice it." Ritsuka commented with furrowed brows, seeing the other Masters struggling for breath.
"I think that's because of my Poison Resistance, Senpai." Mash said as she saddled up beside him, her massive shield at the ready. Having said that, she still covered her mouth with her hand. Fou didn't seem phased by it, standing on her shoulder.
"You would have had a more adverse reaction to this, if it weren't for Mash, Ritsuka." Kagiso said as he himself breathed through his nose. "Our own training throughout our years have allowed us to build up our own Magic Resistance. And that's before taking into account those of us who have Crests."
"Assuming this is magical in nature." Koleen said, looking around as they all took in their surroundings, noticing the heavy dense fog that blanketed London. "Are we sure this isn't just, the pollution that was rampant in the Industrial Revolution?"
"This is beyond the toxicity levels produced by that of the smog of the Industrial Age. The theorized pollution levels of recorded history is nothing compared to this fog." The voice of the Doctor reached their ears, before a hologram of him appeared in the middle of their group. "At this level, I would say that constant exposure for one full hour would have been fatal for Ritsuka."
"That's… frightening." Said Master commented with a discomforted frown.
"It's very difficult, but I'm able to make out the ring in the sky." Mash said, her gaze locked upward. "That's confirmation of the Singularity."
"I'm also detecting life signatures within these buildings." El-Melloi announced as he adjusted his glasses. "The locals must be keeping themselves barricaded."
"Even with the amount of pollution they must deal with on a daily basis, they would have noticed the oddity of this smog." Ayako said with a grimace. "Who knows how many had to die before they took action." She sniffed her nose, her golden eyes trailing towards the sky, of what little she could see of it, obscured by the toxic fog, and the dark clouds. "Does anyone smell ozone?" she asked the group, just as the rumbling of thunder came from above.
"Huh, just like the Atlantic." Koleen commented passingly. "I wonder if it's merely a coincidence."
"Possibly, but prepare for the likelihood that it isn't." Lord El-Melloi said to them.
The Blonde King turned to the Masters with her sword in her hands, gripped tight ready to protect them. "So where shall we head first, Masters?"
The sound of an explosion echoed in the streets, reaching their ears. They all turned towards where it came from, with Ayako feeling the shiver running up her spine.
"That way is a good start." She said in jest, though her expression showed otherwise.
"Keep us posted, Ground Team. We will be watching." The Doctor said to them, before direct communication was severed.
With a nod from Ayako, the Ground Team moved as one, with Kagiso leading the charge since his current contract was with the Saber Class Servant, followed closely by Ritsuka and Mash. Ayako, Koleen, and the Casters held the rear, ready to rain fire and provide support from the back. The sound of explosions grew louder as they got closer to wherever this conflict was occurring. Ayako pulled out her rifle from its holster, while Koleen took a few of her potions from her pouch, the both of them and their accompanying Servants suddenly stopping. The Blonde Witch threw her flask at the ambush that had awaited them: featureless dolls, numbering to a dozen, had leapt out of the roofs of the buildings, their limbs spinning like a drill towards them.
Within a fraction of a second, Ayako aimed her rifle at the flask – Ljósta – and fired.
Half their number were blasted apart by the explosion caused by the concoction, with the remaining automata dealt with swiftly by both El-Melloi and Circe.
"I don't know what I was expecting here in London." Ayako commented with a slight smirk.
"It would be a lie if I said that zombies were not on that list." The Lord added, chuckling lightly.
"There must be a swarm of these things, if it's causing this much of a ruckus." Circe said with an unamused expression, almost as if she was bored.
"Then let's make sure things don't escalate." Koleen said as she turned back to where the rest of them had moved on. "We don't know who it is that's fighting against these things."
With the other half of the Ground Team, the Masters struggled to keep up with the Servants they were running with, rushing towards the escalating conflict. Kagiso held his ceremonial dagger in his hand, gripping it tight while Ritsuka also had his crossbow readied. Mash made sure both Masters were under her protection, giving the signal to Arturia to rush forward in a burst of speed. The light that Caliburn emitted fought against the obscuring fog, lighting their immediate surroundings.
A light clearing of fog, filled with debris of what was once a market, was the center of the battleground, with the automata coming from all sides of the smoke. In the middle, being surrounded, but not overwhelmed, was a figure decked out in heavy metallic armor with red highlights running around it. Red lightning streak around the sword they were wielding, erupting with each strike. Behind them, looking far worse than the armored figure, was a small blue-haired person, bloodied and missing an arm. A quill floated around his one hand, flinging spells left and right around him.
Arturia slammed Caliburn onto the ground, letting the sparks of light erupt around her, causing a wave of energy to spread apart. Unbeknownst to the rest of the Ground Team, she had a bright smile on her face upon seeing the armored figure. She leapt forward, meeting the two to assist them, with the others falling behind.
The armored figure paused in their defense, their gaze locked onto Arturia for a second before they refocused their attention back onto the onslaught of dolls. Without any verbal exchange, the both of them fell into a rhythm, working together with a synchronicity that would have taken their breaths away if it weren't for the situation they were in.
Mash made sure that nothing would touch the two Masters following behind her, who they themselves were providing support in the ways they know: Ritsuka shooting oncoming automata with his crossbow, felling them easily thanks to the quality of its make; Kagiso reinforcing Mash, a blanket of ash covering his skin and his eyes milky white. A barrage of magical artillery landed around the ruined marketplace, provided by both Casters as the last two Masters joined their compatriots.
It wasn't long until the attack slowed, and the remaining dolls turned tail and ran away, the majority of them down by stray attacks of the Casters. The tension remained for a while, the Masters waiting until they were given the all clear for this high octane start to the Singularity. When the dust finally settled, the Masters let out a collective sigh of relief, with Ritsuka himself plopping down on a large piece of the road that had been upturned.
"Caster, if you don't mind, please heal him." Koleen gave the order to the Enchantress, her pink eyes turning to the one armed person, presumably a Servant, judging by the nonchalance.
"Finally." The small Servant said, his voice far deeper than what his stature would indicate. "I'm no longer alone with this buffoon."
The armored figure, who had been making their way towards Arturia, turned to face the small Servant. "You wanna run by that me again?!" their voice was decidedly feminine, though there was a gruffness to it.
The small Servant eyed the armored figure with an unamused expression, as Circe arrived by his side, a healing spell already reconstructing his arm. "I am glad. That I am no longer. Alone with you." He reiterated with a flat voice. "Was that perhaps still too fast? Do you want me to go slower?"
"Why you-" the armored figure raised their fist up, as if ready to strike the Servant.
"Sir Mordred!" and stopped upon hearing their name, called out by Arturia, still with a bright smile on her face.
"Oh boy." Ayako commented beneath her breath upon hearing the name, with El-Melloi rubbing his eyes beside her. This might get complicated.
The armored figure turned to Arturia, already ignoring the small Servant in favor of the blonde Saber. The sound clanging of metal and hissing came from the armor, shifting before their very eyes. Like something they'd expect from armor from a sci-fi movie, the helmet began separating into smaller pieces, each of them entering the armor. With the helmet effectively unequipped, they were privy to a familiar, yet subtly different face.
The newly revealed Mordred furrowed her brows, a hand clenching tight around her sword. "Father… you're, not what I expected…"
"So it would seem." Arturia replied, still with a beaming smile. "It is great to see another one of my knights here, so close to home."
"That is so…" her eyes sharpened to a glare, yet Mordred seemed to be at a loss for words. As if she didn't know how to respond.
Understanding dawned on the Chaldean Saber's face, her smile thinning just slightly. "If you have any grievances to air towards me, I will be more than happy to listen." She said, letting Caliburn disappear into motes of light. "But, it would do us more good, if we can find a place to set up as a base, especially for my Masters."
"Masters, huh?" the armored Saber shifted her eyes briefly towards them, before returning back to Arturia. She scoffed, though there was no malice even if irritation was still audible. "You're far more expressive than I remembered you being."
The light returned to the Saber's smile, her hands clasped together before her. "I am an anomalous existence, a hypothetical possibility of me journeying to further understand myself before I took on the mantle of the King of Knights. A younger version, you could say."
She scoffed again, chuckling amusedly. "I bet the others would lose their shit if they saw you like this."
"Language, Sir Mordred." Arturia admonished, her frown coming off as a frown. "And I think Sir Lancelot is able to relax a bit with me like this."
The Knight clicked her tongue in annoyance. "Of course that prick's first." A scoff caught her attention again, snapping back to the small Servant. "Ya got something to say?"
"Rich words, coming from a hypocrite." He said derisively.
"Mage, I swear, I will skewer you." she took a few steps closer to him, though he merely looked up at her, unperturbed as Circe finished healing his arm.
"Alright, we're getting nowhere right now." Ayako said, quickly cutting herself in before the situation could escalate further. She placed herself between them, hands raised. "Hi, I'm Ayako, leader of the Ground Team."
"You already know who I am." Mordred said, giving her a slight glance, before she fixed her gaze on the smaller Servant again.
"Andersen." The small Servant replied, as he got himself to his feet. "Hans Christian Andersen." He stretched his arms and fingers, getting the feel of them again. "Let's get on with this, we can have a proper introduction back at base."
"You already have a place set up?" Koleen asked, closing the gap to join them.
"I don't." he gestured with a thumb towards Mordred. "This one here crashed at a poor shmuck's place."
"Not literally." She glared at the offending Servant, frustration clear as day, especially coming from his lack of a response to her potential outburst.
"Really? Could've fooled me."
"Sir Mordred!" Arturia quickly intercepted before the Knight could react as she pulled her fist back.
The other blonde turned to Arturia, once again conflicting emotions running on her face, before her body relaxed. "You're very lucky, mage."
Ayako sighed, somewhat with relief, though she was sure that there'll be more to come. She briefly looked around the ruined marketplace, wondering if they were to do anything for it. She shrugged her shoulders, before following Mordred, as the Knight lead them towards their assumed haven.
"Are you sure he'll be alright with this?" Ritsuka asked, as he took a step inside the apartment they were all lead to, with Mash closing the door behind him.
"More than fine. He let me stay here without protest." Mordred said with a hearty chuckle, plopping herself down on the sofa, placing one foot on the coffee table. Arturia, with no hesitation, sat herself beside Mordred, causing the Red Knight to flinch uncomfortably, judging by the expression on her face.
"Where is this person anyway?" Kagiso asked, his eyes looking around the room they were all in. It gave off a warm welcoming feel to it, in contrast with the outside fog.
The Knight glanced her way to Kagiso. "Said something about lookin' for supplies. I'unno, some mage crap."
"He's an alchemist." Andersend said as he poured himself a drink. Coffee, judging by its texture and consistency.
"Eh, doesn't matter. Jekyll's alright." Mordred said with a smile of confidence.
"Jekyll?" the name caused Ayako to rub her temple, the immediate implication causing the shiver to run up her spine.
"Yeah, mousy looking guy. Glasses. Wouldn't hurt a fly." Mordred elaborated, though it did little of it for them. Ayako shared a glance with both Koleen and Waver, seeing confused and worried expressions on their faces.
"Did you say Jekyll? As in Henry Jekyll?" Koleen asked for further clarification. Her eyes were almost bug-eyed.
"Huh? Yeah, it's what I said." Mordred furrowed her brows at the questioning. "What, you know him or something? Is he that famous?"
"Something like that." Andersen replied, taking a sip of the coffee in his hands. "And yes, it is exactly who you're thinking."
"How is that possible?" Koleen asked, this time aiming her question to the two modern Casters.
"There's plenty of reasons how such a thing could be possible." Andersen responded, finding himself a seat closer to the window, even though most of it was boarded up. "Mayhaps they were always real, existing in human history?"
"Or maybe this Singularity brings forth those that were fiction into reality." Lord El-Melloi offered, looking to the smaller Servant.
"Perhaps it's a little bit of both?" Ayako herself said, notably glancing to Arturia. "We've seen evidence of different versions of King Arthur, and the one contracted with Chaldea is even more unique, being a hypothetical existence on an already shaky myth."
"But that's also because she's a Servant, Ayako." The Blonde Witch countered with a troubled expression. "It sounds like Jekyll here is a real person."
"Last I checked, he was." Mordred interjected with a passing comment.
"Oh god, I need to sit down." The American Witch said, almost collapsing on the leather sofa, rubbing her eyes with her free hand as her pouch dangled loosely. "Everything I know about history is being tested…"
"Anyone else that's here?" Kagiso asked, standing himself beside Andersen near the boarded up window, crossing his arms over his chest. "If this Jekyll here is a real person, I find it highly unlikely that he would be leave alone, even if he is an alchemist."
"Shakespeare should be with him." Andersen replied, taking another sip of his coffee. "And yes, he is a Servant."
"Then I guess he should be enough for these automata, right?" Ritsuka asked, as he sat himself on the wooden chair near the bookshelf. Mash said opposite him, with Fou moving onto the table.
"A few days ago, then yes, it would have been." The small Caster replied. "But, they've become a lot more dangerous as of recent."
"Like damn cockroaches, the lot of 'em." Mordred complained with a drawn out groan. "They're gonna swarm the streets of London at this rate."
"So someone, or something, has made them stronger." Circe said, her voice decidedly neutral. "It should be a Caster then, unless someone else has a history of making puppets."
"What, like Da Vinci?" Ayako commented with a scoff.
"Or maybe your mother, Ayako?" Mash said, shrugging lightly with a ghost of a smile at the tip of her lips.
Said Puppeteer groaned at the thought. "Please, don't even joke about that." She sighed, putting the thought away from her mind, before she caught the eyes of the Demi Servant. "Can you connect with Chaldea?"
"We're coincidentally over a leyline, so it shouldn't be difficult." Mash said back to her.
"Then get to it." She said with a single nod of her head. "It's better that we can touch base with them."
"Perhaps we should wait for this Jekyll to get back." Kagiso quickly said. "It is his house, after all."
"Hmm." She contemplated for a second, before nodding along. "Sure, we'll wait for him. Waves." She called to her friend, glancing towards him. "Familiars in the immediate surroundings."
"On it." He said with a succinct nod.
"Circe, try to get eyes on the city. It'll be difficult, but maybe we can get something on the people involved." Koleen said to the short woman.
"With me, not even Assassins can hide." She said proudly, nodding to her fellow Caster before the both of them got to work and left the room.
"Does this Jekyll have a way of contacting you, if he runs into trouble?" Ritsuka asked the Red Knight with concern written on his face. "I know he's not alone, but if you said that these things are getting stronger…"
"Hmmm, I don't know." Mordred's brows furrowed at the thought. "He should, he's one of you folk after all. If he doesn't, that damned playwright should."
"And we now have our Casters looking out as well." Koleen said to the room with a long sigh.
"So what should we do now?" Ritsuka asked, mostly to Ayako, befitting of the leader.
"Gather ourselves as much as we could." She replied, turning to Andersen. "Were you doing anything before this? I'm assuming you weren't summoned together with Mordred."
"No, but the playwright and I were together." He answered her after he took another sip of his coffee. "We had planned on making our way to the Clock Tower, before we bumped into this buffoon." He gestured with his mug to the Red Knight, who flipped him off without even turning to face him. "We still planned on heading there."
"The Clock Tower… where are they?" Kagiso asked, his eyes sharpening into a glare, though it was aimed at no one.
"Yeah, wouldn't they be doing something about this?" Ritsuka added with his own question, looking around the room. "Captain Drake fought with us in the Atlantic. Emperor Nero still had to be there with her own troops. The French army even did as much as they could, against dragons and undead. The only place where we had no one doing anything was Singularity F, and that was because-"
"They were all dead." Ayako finished. All eyes turned to her, a few of them having already reached the conclusion as well. "You're right, they would have done something in the face of what looked like the masquerade being breached. And yet we're seeing no one. Not a single soul, aside from an Alchemist who's hiding in his own house. One who we haven't met yet. One who might or might not be fictional."
"You're saying they're all killed?" Koleen asked, having already calmed herself down from the minor freak out she had.
Ayako shrugged her shoulders. "It's what I would've done. And we've had firsthand experience, whoever the big bad mastermind is probably had an inside agent within the Clock Tower."
Mordred's fist clenched tight, her scowl heavy on her face. "Fuckin' mages." They all heard her say beneath her breath
Silence hung in the air as they all digested the scenario. Andersen's loud sip was the only sound within the room. "As the hour ticks by, that becomes an even likelier scenario." He too shrugged his shoulders, scoffing at himself. "Means we won't be met with much resistance when we head over there ourselves."
"That's true as well. We might be able to find out more on whatever it is that's going on." Ayako said, nodding at the Caster's intentions.
"Yes, as macabre as this is, this is the perfect opportunity we've been waiting for." Kagiso sighed with a semblance of relief. "Perhaps we could plan out an expedition."
The Puppeteer chuckled at the choice of words. "You're saying this as if we're about to plunder some ancient tomb."
"It kind of is." The Shaman replied with a ghost of a smile. "Shall we get started?"
She nodded back, crouching down beside the coffee table as everyone else drew closer. "Let's lay out what we know, and what else we need know of…"
2018
The breakroom was empty. Unsurprising, considering the other Servants were off with their own businesses. Elizabeth was tasked with watching over one of the Masters' familiars, and would have no doubt roped in Kiyohime along. Sanson was in the infirmary, all but acknowledged as the substitute in place of the Doctor. The Red Archer took to the kitchen like a moth to a flame, no matter how much he tried to deny it. The Saint looked over the crew that wished for spiritual guidance, and the Black Knight was searching for peace as well. Even the Druid seemed to be getting even more serious, with whatever goes on inside his temporary workshop. And the last time she saw Medea, she was with Da Vinci within the Control Room, no doubt to keep watch of Circe.
Here she was, Artemis' greatest Huntress, sitting alone within the breakroom, and yet she could feel that something was wrong. That something was missing. What was it? She had always prized her solitude, even on the Argo she preferred being on her own. And somehow, something didn't sit right with her, at this moment.
Her ear flickered when she heard the door open, but she didn't turned to face whoever it was that walked in. The subtle sounds of meowing further clued her in on who it actually was that had entered the room. The steps grew louder, no doubt approaching her sitting on the four-seat sofa. What really got her attention, was the loud thud of heavy glass hitting the coffee table. Her green eyes, obscured by the white mask still on her face, trailed towards what appears to the flat and thick glass bottle.
"It's malt whiskey." The draconic Lancer said, sitting herself down beside her, gently placing the now small cat on her lap.
Behind her mask, Atalante raised an eyebrow at the statement. "And?"
"And you need to cheer up." Elizabeth said with a shake of her head, her pink hair getting tangled with her horns. "I didn't plan on this, and if I were, I would have brought wine instead."
"And instead you brought whiskey." Atalante commented with a neutral tone.
"The Old Man suggested it." The young looking Servant said with a sigh. It took Atalante a moment to realize that she was referring to Cú Chulainn. "So, we're gonna drink!"
"Weren't you supposed to be with Kiyohime?" she asked the Lancer, wondering to herself why she's getting this attention now.
"Birdie told her to socialize with other people. So I brought her to Big Red." She held back a chuckle upon hearing Elizabeth's nickname for the Red Archer. "The Old Man was there, and said gave me this. I don't know where he got it. It's probably Irish." She said with a shrug of her shoulders.
"Hm." She reached over and picked up the bottle, feeling its weight in her hands. "I'm assuming you're not going to have us drink straight from the bottle then?"
"Of course not, don't be absurd." Elizabeth replied with a scoff, just as the door slid open, closing again almost immediately. There were no sounds of footsteps, but she could feel the presence growing closer. That narrowed down the list of suspects for her.
"These glasses should do." Medea said, placing each glass in front of them before she sat herself beside Atalante.
"She roped you into this?" the Huntress asked the Caster with confusion.
"No, I just had some free time." The elfin magus said with a hint of a smile. Her hood was down, showing her face to them.
Atalante turned back to Elizabeth, seeing the young Servant look to her expectantly. She remembered she was holding the bottle. She opened the glass bottle with little effort, and poured in the appropriate amount for the three of them. Both Elizabeth and Medea gestured with their glasses at each other, with Atalante sitting in the middle of them, adjusting her mask slightly, before all three took their first drink.
"God, it tastes horrible." Elizabeth said, even though she took another sip. "How could the Old Man stomach this?"
"I bet this is light for him." Medea said with an amused chuckle.
"I guess its fine." Atalante herself said, swirling the alcohol in the glass.
"Why are you still wearing that damned mask, anyway?" Elizabeth asked suddenly, Atalante snapping to face her. "It's been two whole months already."
Atalante placed her glass back on the coffee table, before she turned her attention back to Medea, seeing the Caster silently judging the drink in her hand. "I'm not sure I could yet."
"Hm? Sure you can." Atalante's ears perked up upon hearing Medea's reply. "The last Singularity was… good for my soul, you can say."
"So I can take this off?" the Huntress asked, getting a nod from the magus. She sighed with relief, her hand reaching for the mask on her face. She held her hand there for a few seconds, before pulling it off. She sighed again, feeling the sterile air on her skin. "What changed?"
"I told you, the last Singularity." Medea answered, taking another sip of the drink. "Seeing Jason, and worst of all, seeing myself like that. Seeing her so deranged, so weak. So lost." She sighed as well, downing the last of her drink. "Killing her… I'm still not sure how to feel about it. But, it made me feel a little lighter, at least."
"Sounds like hell." Elizabeth responded, finishing her own glass before placing it back on the table. Her eyes went down to the cat, seeing it tucked in on itself, asleep.
"Did you feel the same, when you killed Carmilla?" Medea asked her.
"The thing I felt immediately right after I plunged my lance into her, was exhaustion." The Lancer replied. "For that single moment, I felt so tired. You said your shoulders felt lighter? I felt they were heavier."
"Really?" Medea asked, and Atalante could only sit there and listen. She had heard that she was summoned there by their enemy, but unlike Martha, she had no recollection of it.
"Yes, for a moment." Elizabeth smiled at them as she regaled her experience. "Then I felt a fire in me, fix that Singularity, and to prove that I was more than her."
"More than a fictional inspiration, huh…" Atalante nodded, knowing the bare minimum of the Servant they had fought.
"I don't know how it will go from here, but hopefully it'll be great for us." Elizabeth closed off with a toothy grin. "Who knows, maybe you'll have to kill yourself as well in the future, Atalante."
"Knowing what everyone else has been through, it's only a matter of time." Atalante said with a chuckle, before she affixed her mask to the side of her head.
The screen on the wall lit up suddenly, showing the face of Chaldea's Genius. "Well, well, well! It seems there are people here!" the picture perfect smile resonated through the monitor.
"Are there any new developments, Da Vinci?" Medea asked as she poured herself and Elizabeth another drink.
"Nothing new, but we have reestablished connection with the Ground Team." Da Vinci explained to them. "It's audio only, they haven't set a control point yet, but everything is as it should be. Wanna listen in, ladies?"
"Of course we do!" Elizabeth answered for the three of them. "Put 'em on, put 'em on!"
Da Vinci chuckled amusedly, before she nodded to them. "Well hold on to your buts, we're putting them through!"
The screen shifted from Da Vinci's face, to audio waves of an ongoing conversation, led by Ayako. The three of them listened in on the meeting, waiting for the next development to occur within the Singularity, whatever it may be.
With her green eyes on the screen, and her ears prickling with each word. Her hand idly reached for the mask, feeling the features with her fingers. She sighed again, keeping it close to her breath though she was sure the others heard her. She felt a hand wrap itself around her wrist. Medea, without even glancing towards her, pulled it back down.
Atalante closed her eyes and nodded to herself. She didn't know what else they will face in the future. She hopes that at least, the next time Lady Artemis sees her, her patron could see that her greatest Huntress could hold her head up high.
