Part 1
Thirst
Chapter 1
A Bad Influence
Late November, 2001
John was somewhere in central Nebraska, looking down at a demon possessed man that was tied to a chair in front of him beneath a devil's trap on the ceiling above. In one hand, he held a jug of water with a cross and rosary beads floating in it while he waited for the demon to talk.
The demon glared up at John with black eyes and water droplets running down his face. "I don't know which of us killed your little slut! Even if I did, there's no reason why I'd tell you! You're just going to send me back anyway!"
John flung more holy water in the demon's face, causing him to scream in pain. "I can do this all night!"
Then he did it again, causing the same reaction as before, but this time the evil spirit began to laugh. "I might know something… He likes playing with fire, you say?"
John lowered the jug. "That's right. He was also in my son's nursery. What do you know about that?"
The demon grinned up at him. "There are a lot of demons that like to play with fire, John Winchester. There's a lot of it where I'm from!"
"Do you know why he was in the nursery or not?!" John cried as he threatened to fling more holy water at his prisoner.
Fear suddenly appeared on the face of the possessed man and the demon quickly answered. "Okay! Like I said, I might know something. I don't know his name, but I've heard that his eyes are yellow."
"Yellow eyes?" John asked. "Every demon I've met either has black or red eyes."
"Yes," the demon replied. "This one is different. I've heard that the most powerful and ancient demons have a different color in their eyes…"
"How can I find this demon?" John demanded angrily.
"I don't know. I swear to the big dick upstairs that I don't know anything more than that!"
John set the jug of water down and took a step back. "If you really don't know anything else, then you're no longer useful to me."
He then began to recite the exorcism chant that he had memorized from the Rituale Romanum, causing the demon's vessel to twitch and scream while the chair he was tied to slid all over the floor underneath the devil's trap. The walls and windows of the run down cabin they were in trembled and the floorboards began to crack, just as John finished the ritual, and then the possessed man threw back his head and black smoke flew out of his mouth. Now out of the host's body, the demon swirled around in the air before burning a circle into the floor and disappearing.
When the demon was gone, the man it had possessed appeared to wake up like he had been asleep and was dreaming. "Is it gone?"
John quickly began to untie him. "Yeah, I sent it back to Hell."
Overjoyed that his nightmare was finally over, the man sitting in the chair put his face in his hands and burst into tears. John had neither the time nor the patience to comfort him, so he quickly guided him out of the old shack before putting his stuff in the back of the truck and taking him somewhere safe.
After John took the man to safety, he headed south towards the Kansas border and was surprised when his flip phone began to ring inside the pocket of his jacket. He carefully pulled over to the side of the road so he could answer it and he was even more surprised when he discovered that Daniel Elkins was the one trying to call him. It had been a few years since they had their falling out and John assumed that their friendship was over.
"Hey, Dan," John answered. "It's been a while."
"Yeah, it has," Daniel agreed. "I know it's been a few years since we last hunted together, but I was hoping we could work a case together again."
John sighed. "Is that really such a good idea, Dan? After what happened last time, I wasn't sure you'd ever want to talk to me again."
"We both said things we regret," Daniel said to him. "I'm sorry too, but this is important and you're one of the best. I was hoping you could help me with a hunt in Kansas."
Suddenly becoming concerned about where he might be going, John asked, "Where in Kansas?"
"Smallville," was Daniel's reply.
John bit his lip, before letting out a frustrated sigh. "Those poor people have been through enough… Alright, what are we up against?"
He heard the sound of papers rustling before Daniel got back on the phone and started to read something. "On Route Five, animal control found a fresh deer by the side of the road, with all of it's blood drained out of it. A couple of Luthor Corp Employees and a high school student named Greg Arkin went missing before that, so I think there might be a vampire in the area, possibly a nest."
John chuckled. "Vampires we can handle, but I thought you were about to tell me it was something much worse."
"Same here," Daniel agreed. "Strange things have been happening there since the meteor shower, but it's getting worse, John. Some people think the meteor rocks are responsible, but I'm not entirely sure."
"I heard about Jeremy Creek waking up from his coma after that one electrical storm," John said. "I also heard he found his scarecrow buddies and zapped them into comas too. I guess they finally got their beating."
Over the phone, John heard more papers rustling before Daniel spoke again. "Yes, I was on that case. He was so close to ground zero when that first meteor came down, that it's possible the meteor rocks and the electricity combined gave him his power. I don't know how else to explain it."
"So what happened, Dan? How did you stop him?"
"I didn't," Daniel explained. "He electrocuted himself behind the high school and then he aged fourteen years. I have no idea how it happened, but it cost him his powers and his memory. Last time I knew, he was still alive but he can't remember a damn thing."
"What about the football coach that got burned alive in the locker room shower? Did you look into that one?"
"No, I didn't," Daniel answered. "But I did investigate the Lex Luthor bank heist. I thought a shapeshifter was in town but I never found one."
"Maybe a local hunter took care of it."
"You're probably right. I also looked into the case of Harry Volk. I'm not sure how he did it, but he dropped about fifty years of aging and got his youth back. Then he continued his killing spree from the nineteen forties until he died in a corn silo."
A smile crept across John's face and he chuckled. "Maybe he discovered the fountain of youth. If we find it too, do you think it'll work for us?"
Daniel chuckled as well. "Knowing our luck, it would stop working before we even got there."
"So, about these vampires," John said, changing the subject again. "They wouldn't have any connection with Luther, would they?"
Daniel let out a frustrated sigh. "Some of his kin might have survived after I went after him. The guys I went hunting with weren't as experienced as you and one of them got killed."
John closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers. "Damn it. At least tell me you took out Luther."
Daniel was silent for a moment, but then he said, "Of course. I made sure Luther was dead. I took care of him myself."
"Did you ever find the Colt?" John asked.
"No, I'm still working on it," Daniel told him. "So what do ya say, John? Are you in?"
At last, John finally agreed and they hung up their phones. For the first time in over a decade, he was returning to Smallville, but despite the fact that they were hunting monsters that they least expected to encounter there, it still appeared that their instincts were correct about the town. Strange things were going on and John was willing to put his past behind him and work with his old hunting partner again just to get to the bottom of it.
Jodi Melville awoke to the sound of knocking on her bedroom door. Irritated, she glanced at the alarm clock by her bed and realized she had only been asleep for an hour, after sneaking back into her father's house that morning.
Since she didn't answer, her father knocked on the door again. "Jodi, I made you some breakfast."
"Okay," Jodi groaned, before rolling onto her stomach and putting her pillow over her head.
"It's almost time for school, honey," her father reminded her before returning to the kitchen.
Jodi kept the pillow over her head until she noticed the smell of fried bacon coming in from outside of her room. There was once a time when the scent would have appealed to her, but now it just made her feel sick. Despite how she felt, she forced herself to get up and quickly got dressed.
"Might as well pretend to be normal," she said under her breath.
When she finally left her room and went downstairs to the dining room, she was wearing a black trench coat and sunglasses. Her father was already waiting for her at the table and he gave her a surprised look the moment he saw her strange outfit.
"Honey, why are you wearing sunglasses indoors?" he asked.
Ignoring the question, Jodi sat down across from him and looked down at the food without touching it. Her father became even more concerned as he watched her stare at it in silence.
"I'm worried about you, Jodi. You haven't been eating and now you're sneaking in at odd hours of the morning. Maybe we should… Talk to somebody."
Jodi looked up at him with a scowl. "I don't need to see a shrink, Dad."
Ignoring the angry look she was giving him, Mr. Melville continued to make his case. "At first it was the plant shakes that had me worried, but now… Now you're not even drinking those anymore. I know that losing your mother was hard on you. It's been hard on both of us, but I just wish you would talk to me."
Suddenly becoming enraged, Jodi stood up and pushed her chair back. "I don't need you to keep worrying about me! I'm doing just fine, okay, so stop being so damn nosy all the time!"
Her father's jaw dropped and then it was his turn to stand up. "Were you out all night with that boy Dustin? I don't understand why you're spending time with him when he bullies you at school! He's having a bad influence on you, Jodi!"
The room became quiet as they stared each other down. For a minute, neither of them said anything, until finally, Jodi's expression softened and she sat back down. "I'm sorry, Dad. I didn't mean to yell at you, it's just that… He's different now."
Her father calmed down as well when she started to take small bites of the food that was on her plate, but he remained concerned as he dropped back into his own seat. "I know that's what he wants you to believe, but I don't trust him."
Jodi continued to shove small pieces of food into her mouth, all the while feeling like she might throw up. She could also hear her father's rapid heart beat and the sound of blood pumping through his veins, causing her gums to burn as the fangs buried within threatened to show themselves.
"Jodi, are you on drugs?" her father asked. "What are you taking?"
Jodi put her fork down and looked up at her father, doing her best not to listen to his heartbeat. "No, it's not drugs."
She removed her sunglasses and the sun coming through the window hurt her eyes, causing her to block it with her hand. "It's just alcohol. Just… alcohol."
Her father gave her a suspicious look. "Just alcohol? Jodi… Is this because of your break up with Pete? I know that was hard on you too."
At first, Jodi hesitated to answer, but then she nodded. "Yeah, that's it."
"Honey, we need to get you some help. These things you're doing, they're not healthy. I already lost your mother and I can't lose you too."
Jodi agreed with him and then got up from her chair. Leaving her father alone at the table, she went back to her room and shut the door just as her fangs began to protrude out of her gums. She hurried over to her dresser where she kept a small lunch cooler hidden underneath several bundles of sweatshirts and hoodies. Yanking open the drawer, she retrieved the cooler and opened it. Inside, there was a glass vial of deer blood hidden under a cold ice pack, so she grabbed it and gulped it down causing the fangs to recede. It was becoming clear that the blood from the deer she hit with her car wasn't good enough anymore. She needed fresh blood. She needed human blood.
Pete Ross brought his lunch tray over to the table where his friends were already sitting. They were discussing upcoming school assignments as he joined them, but at that moment, the only thing he was worried about was Jodi.
"Hey, Pete," Clark said as his friend took a seat next to Chloe. "You doing okay?"
Pete faked a smile and started digging into his lunch. "Yeah, I'm great. Why wouldn't I be?"
"You seem like you have something on your mind," Clark replied.
Chloe glanced at Pete with a worried look on her face. "It's Jodi you're worrying about, isn't it?"
Suddenly becoming irritated, Pete's smile vanished and he snapped back at them. "We broke up, that's it! I'm over it and I would appreciate it if everyone just stopped talking about it!"
Clark raised his eyebrows and picked up his sandwich. "We're just worried about you, Pete."
"Yeah, we're your friends and we're here for you," Chloe added.
Pete sighed loudly. "I know. I'm sorry. It's just that Jodi's hanging out with the wrong crowd. I'm afraid that she…"
His voice trailed off as Jodi walked past them wearing a black trench coat and sunglasses without carrying a lunch. Chloe watched her go by with raised eyebrows and Clark looked over his shoulder to see where she was heading. Near the back corner of the cafeteria, there was a small, round table underneath a burned out light where Dustin Crenshaw and Sean Kelvin were hanging out with some girl that they didn't know. She had dirty blonde hair that went down to her shoulders and she was always dressed in ways that barely adhered to the school dress code, whenever they passed her in the halls. On this day, everyone in their group was wearing sunglasses and dark clothes like Jodi and their skin was so pale, they almost looked like ghosts.
Pete gave them a look of disapproval and shook his head. "I just can't believe Jodi's hanging out with those dicks. Especially Dustin. He always used to make her feel bad about herself, but now they're friends?"
Chloe gave the new girl they were with a suspicious look. "They all seemed to change after she showed up. As far as I know, she's a senior that transferred from out of state about a month ago. I think her name is Lisa. Maybe?"
"What do you think she did to make them change?" Clark asked, before taking a bite of his sandwich.
Pete kept his attention on Jodi, while his friends continued their conversation. Chloe, of course, had a theory. "Sean was the first to come under her spell after he fell into the frozen lake during that tailgate party. He nearly drowned, but his new girlfriend over there pulled him out. I'm convinced she did a lot more to him than just warm him up."
Clark raised his brows at her in surprise. "Do you think she gave him some kind of drug?"
"Either that or they're vampires," Chloe replied with a smirk. "The next day, he showed up wearing sunglasses in the daytime and looking like that."
"I noticed Sean putting sunscreen on his hands and his face earlier in class," Clark said, looking confused. "But it's been cold and cloudy for over a week. What would make him do that? They can't really be vampires, can they?"
Still not caring about their conversation, Pete sighed and shook his head again. "Jodi was so proud of herself for losing weight over the summer. It's the only thing she wanted to do, but look at her now. I can't believe she dumped me for Dustin and his drugs."
Clark and Chloe looked over at Jodi and her new friends again, just as they got up and snuck out through a side door, and then Pete shook his head and got up as well. His friends looked up at him and watched as he dumped his unfinished food in the trash and stormed out of the cafeteria.
"I wish there was something we could do to help," Clark said. "Pete cares a lot about Jodi and she's just throwing her life away."
Chloe shrugged it off and immediately went back to eating her own lunch. "It's sad that she's making these choices, but they're still hers to make. If she wants to throw her life away and hang out with a moron like Dustin, then Pete is better off without her."
Now concerned about her judgemental attitude towards Jodi, Clark suddenly became irritated. "Chloe!"
Chloe took a bite of whatever she was eating and gave him a confused look. "What?" She swallowed the bite and threw two more cents into the conversation. "If she cared about Pete as much as she said she did, then she wouldn't have asked him out after homecoming only to dump him for Dustin a couple months later. I'm worried about Pete too, trust me, but some people can't be saved."
Clark let it go and finished his sandwich in silence. Chloe didn't say much either, at first, but soon she returned to discussing whatever they were talking about before Pete and Jodi came along. When they were finished with their lunches, they left the cafeteria and went out into the hall where they saw two men wearing suits and ties walk past them. One was middle aged and the other looked like he was nearing retirement.
"What's up with the guys in the suits?" Chloe asked. "They look like feds."
Clark watched them curiously as they headed in the direction of Principal Kwan's office. "I don't know. I wonder if it has anything to do with Jodi."
"The plot thickens," Chloe said. "I'll see you around, Clark!"
Clark watched her walk away and then looked back at the guys in the suits. He saw them go around a corner and started to follow them. Keeping as close to the lockers as he could and being careful not to let the men see him, he hurried down the corridor and followed them until they arrived at the principal's office. He took a peek at them from around a corner when they met up with Principal Kwan and spoke to him quietly, before disappearing inside.
Once they were hidden from sight, Clark squinted at them and saw their skeletons through the door and the adjacent walls. The men in the suits were carrying guns under their jackets, making Chloe's theory seem a little more plausible. "Who are you guys?"
It was unclear what the three men were discussing, but Clark had a feeling they were talking about Jodi and her new friends. If they really were using drugs, then it seemed likely that they bought them from someone. The idea of a drug dealer coming to Smallville from one of the big cities seemed absurd, but at the same time, the possibility of them being vampires seemed far more insane.
For anyone that doesn't remember, the "falling out" that occurred between John and Daniel was mentioned on the Supernatural episode 1x20 - Dead Man's Blood. They didn't go into much detail about it then, but I figured it had to have happened before the start of this story. I had to re-watch that episode a few times to get some of the details right lol.
