Daniel had come home with Amanda in good spirits after dinner; catching up with Ali and the beginning of reconciliation with Johnny had lifted some of the weight from his soul. He'd only taken two steps into his home when that weight came crashing down again.
"What the…?" he muttered, as shattered glass crunched beneath his shoes.
Amanda only shook her head in confusion, sliding past him with her hand on his shoulder. "Sam? Honey, where are you?" she called out.
"Mom? Dad? We're in here," Sam called back.
"We?" Daniel said softly, sharing a look with Amanda before proceeding into the living room. Rounding the corner into the room Daniel was surprised and further confused at the sight before him. Sam stood holding open a trash bag for Demetri to pour in the contents of the dustpan he was holding. Across the room, Hawk Hawk? was sweeping yet more broken glass into a pile.
"What the hell happened here?" Daniel demanded.
…
Now he was sitting in his car gripping the steering wheel as he tried to keep his anger in check. Rivalry was one thing, questionable ideology another, but inciting these kids to such violence in his own home was unconscionable. Kreese had to go.
When he pulled into the plaza, Daniel was surprised to find the '93 Caravan parked in front of the dojo. Last he'd seen of it, Johnny had driven away in it. Was he here now? And if so, was he here to stop Kreese or joining him again with some backward idea of being able to do more from within? Shaking his head, he realized it didn't really change anything; he was going to stop Kreese and if that meant taking on Johnny too, well so be it.
