Inside Sarah Walker
Chapter 2 Everything Starts Somewhere
Sarah sets the recording device down and returns to her chair. "Let's see where I should start, well like they say, it starts at the beginning, so here we go. My childhood was very different than yours. My mom was very sick for a long time, thank goodness she got better, she couldn't really take care of me, so we lived with your Great Grandma, I know you never met her, she passed before you were born. She tried really hard to bring me up right, but her hardest struggle was keeping me away from Grandpa Jack."
"You see at the time he was my hero; Grandpa could do no wrong, he offered me a life of adventure and fun. "We did have fun…', she shakes her head and wipes tears from her eyes, '…when he wasn't in jail that is. You see, Grandpa Jack was a con man, he would hustle people out of pretty much anything he could get his hands on, money, jewels, name it he would con people out of it, one time he sold a huge building he didn't own, Daddy and I helped with that one, long story, I will tell you later. With my mom being so sick, my grandma had her hands full, so when I ran off to live with my dad, she just didn't have the energy to stop me, she tried, but I wouldn't listen. Little did I know how what he did would affect me in my later life, what I thought was okay, really wasn't, and it was having a profound effect on me.
I started out by scamming housewives out of their grocery money selling girl scout cookies that they would never receive. My dad would always give me a cut, and I would put it in my piggy bank saving up so Grandpa Jack and I could have a big adventure. The cons and rip-offs kept getting bigger and more dangerous.
I thought it was fun to act like an armored car had hit me on my bike, feigning like I was injured. My job was to distract the guards while my dad picked the lock and took the money out of the back of the truck. After he stashed the money in our car, he would come rushing over saying he was a doctor, pick me up and act like he was going to take me to a hospital. He taught me all his tricks, including how to pick locks."
"We lived all over the country, staying one step ahead of the police, and the people we were cheating. When I look back now, I guess it wasn't the best way for a little girl to grow up, but we did have fun, at least I thought it was fun. I loved my dad, just like you love yours, but it was different. He was not someone I could rely on, he was more like a partner than a father, I knew that there was something missing, something wrong, I just had no way of knowing what it was. Well one day all that "fun" came to an end.
"We had settled down in San Diego for a little while, my dad was hoping I could finish school. We took on the names Jack and Jennifer Burton, it was almost like we were normal, but being normal was something I wasn't going to find for many years to come. I was driving home from school one day, and the house we were renting was surrounded by police cars. It freaked me out', Sarah shakes her head and snorts a short laugh, 'another gift from your dad, freaking out, one of his favorite phrases, don't freak out Sarah…, Sarah I'm freaking out", she laughs again, how did I ever fall in love with that man? Sorry, I got sidetracked again, he does that to me, anyway I was in tears and scared, what little security I had was vanishing in front of my eyes, I was on my own, not for the first time, but it was still scary."
"My father had prepared me for this eventuality, and I kept driving right past the house. I drove up the road into a wood not far from the house. We had marked a tree there, it had an emergency "kit", what I now call a "go bag", buried at its roots. I dug up the box just as my father told me I should; it was filled with money and papers for a new identity. When I looked up there was a man standing there watching me, I threw my knife at him, he easily dodged it. He told me his name was Graham and that my father had cheated some very dangerous people, he had him arrested to keep him out of danger, and that he could keep me out of danger too."
"I figured I would be spending the rest of my life in prison, not that I would be losing much, my dad was all I had. I offered him my hands figuring he was going to cuff me and take me to jail. Instead, he shook his head and said, not that way. Pulling my knife out of the tree where it stuck, he walked over and handed it back to me, this guy was not afraid of me at all. He said your father taught you a lot of skills, he offered to teach me a lot more, and I could help my country. He went on to tell me that he knew all of the names I had, even the one on my birth certificate, but he asked, how do you like the name Sarah Walker?"
"Freaked out yet, No Sarah is not the name I was born with, but it is my name, it is who I am. For a long time, it bugged Daddy that I couldn't tell him my "real" name. Then one day I offered him the chance to ask me. He shook his head, and basically said he didn't care who I was because he knows who I am. Did I mention that I love your father? Sarah wipes away another tear. Turns out Graham knew a lot more about me than I thought, and he was very willing to take advantage of that information."
"Oops I did it again, got ahead of myself. I did it, I went with Graham, I went into training, they kept me in San Diego so I could finish school. I went to school during the day and trained in the evenings. Once I graduated, they moved me to Langley where I was a full-time trainee. I became a CIA agent, a good one, and some say I was the best. Okay, kids buckle in because you are about to hear some stuff that you may find hard to hear."
"Remember we all have things that effect our thoughts, feelings and actions. Please don't judge me too harshly when I tell you this next part. I was, considered to be, an attractive woman, I know your dad thinks so, but I never saw myself that way. I always felt like that lost little girl that no one really wanted. As a teenager I wore braces and my face was covered with acne, not to mention I was gangly and very shy, great for pulling cons, people especially the female marks felt sorry for me."
"The CIA remade me and trained me; I know many forms of martial arts, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, some Kung Fu, my favorite is Muay Thai. I mastered all kinds of weapons, pistols, rifles shotguns you name it. Above all knives are my favorite, I used to love a good knife fight. I took to this stuff like a fish to water. I became Graham's Wildcard Enforcer, kids your mom was a cold hearted, deadly assassin, many called me the Ice Queen, but never to my face."
"They also taught me to manipulate men, to get their secrets out of them, the agency called me a honey trap, I never let that go too far, I had all the control, and I liked it. It made me feel like I had power, control in my life and over those men. I convinced myself that I felt safe, secure in the knowledge that I was in charge. I know now that I was deluding myself, just acting out on the pain I carried inside me."
"If you are shocked, I don't blame you, doesn't sound like the mom who tucked you in and kissed your boo boos. The woman I have been telling you about doesn't exist anymore; thank goodness she is gone. She is long gone thanks to the fates that led me to Burbank, California, and a run in with a certain nerd we all know and love."
"I want you to know that I have been honest with Daddy, he knows all this stuff, not the details, he doesn't want to hear that, but he knows who I was before we met. Now this part is very hard to talk about, mostly because it caused a lot of pain for Daddy. I had a partner, his name was Bryce Larkin, and your dad called him his nemesis. You see they had a history long before I met either of them, it's a small world and mine and Dad's kept crossing. Sometimes I wonder if it was all part of some cosmic plan,' Sarah shrugs, 'I guess I don't care, I just like the way it worked out".
"So, Bryce was my partner, but he was more, he was also my lover. Our cover was a newlywed couple the Andersons; it was like my fantasy of a normal relationship. You don't meet many men as a spy other than the marks you are playing, and I really didn't have much experience with men other than playing them as marks, and Bryce was there. I had fooled myself into believing that we were in love, I mean I cared about him, but it was all a spy game, just something to fill a hole in my heart that I didn't even know existed.
So, here's the strange part, if it hadn't been for Bryce Larkin, I would never meet Daddy, and he would never teach what me what true love is. Kids if it hadn't been for Bryce Larkin, you wouldn't be here today, watching your mother tell her story. So, if Bryce Larkin did all that why did your father call him his nemesis, I will tell you more about that later, plus a lot of that will be in Daddy's story."
"Now this next part will be of interest to Molly, I am hoping she is with you, I can't imagine she wouldn't be. I was called in by my original handler, I won't say his name, which would give him more honor than he deserves, he betrayed me and the agency. He said I was needed in Hungary, so I went, he trained me as a field agent, and I trusted him, I didn't even bother to check in with Graham."
"Turns out he was just another man using me to get what he wants. When I got there, he said my mission was to retrieve a package, He wouldn't tell me what it was, just go into a mansion and retrieve it. When I entered the house, I came up on a group of men, turns out there was eleven of them, and there on the floor next to them while they ate dinner, were two bodies. "Those bodies, a man and a woman, were your parents Molly."
A sharp gasp comes out of Molly's mouth; she looks around the room frantically as if trying to find a safe place to hide. Stephen stops the playback as he and Diane run over to hold her. Molly is flustered "what did she say, my parents? but I know my mom, she raised me, your grandmother, she was my mom, who is she talking about." Stephen runs into the kitchen to get Molly a drink of water as Diane calms her. When Stephen returns, Molly sips the water and begins to calm down. Diane says, "Maybe we should listen to the rest of the story before we jump to conclusions. They give Molly another minute, "I'm okay, let's hear the rest."
Stephen turns the playback on. Sarah reappears on the screen continuing her story. "I'm sorry Molly, I just didn't know how to say it, I figured ripping the Band-Aid off was best, I'm sorry if what I said hurt you, but it's not all bad. You see those men sitting around that table were gangsters, they killed your parents so they could kidnap you and someday claim your families' fortune. That's right Honey, you are an heiress, I set up a trust so that your inheritance would be protected, and when you turned twenty-one, and got that inheritance from your "long lost" aunt in Budapest, it was your family inheritance."
Molly is in shock as Sarah keeps talking, "Well to make a long story short, I killed those men, all of them, they didn't have a chance against me. When I was done, I checked in with my handler, over my comms, who told me the "package" was in the other room. I walked into the next room, and there you were Molly, smiling and cooing away, I guess all the gunfire hadn't scared you. I picked you up, now kids I had never held a baby in my arms before, I was FREAKING out. Those eleven men and all their guns didn't faze me at all, but this gorgeous pink little bundle, had me shaking all over. I tucked you into my bullet proof vest and shot our way out of there, I found a hotel room, and kept off the grid. Did I mention that I was freaking out, I had no idea what was going on, why would the CIA have me kidnap a baby, and what the hell was I supposed to do with a baby?"
"The biggest problem was that I had no idea how to take care of a baby, diapering was easy to figure out, I got some formula and fed you, but sweetheart, you were very unhappy. So, I called my mom…OUR mom, and begged her to help me, Mom, she won't stop crying, I don't know what to do. Sarah honey, she needs to feel safe, bring her close to your body, and rock her she told me, but it didn't work, Molly you wouldn't stop crying. It was breaking my heart, I didn't feel much like the Ice Queen at that moment, Mom she won't stop crying. I could hear the frustration in Mom's voice as she said Sarah, sing her a song. I was lost I told her Mom I don't know any songs; getting calm Mom asked if I remembered the lullaby, she used to sing to me. I put mom on speaker, and we started to sing it together and you calmed down, it was the first time she sang to you but not the last."
"There was something about the whole situation that didn't feel right, so I left you hidden and went to meet that jerk myself. When I got to the café where I was supposed to meet him, I got him to admit, that the whole mission was a fake, He wanted you so that he could steal your fortune. He had a gun on me, I had fooled him into thinking that I had you with me in a pram that I had brought along. I reached in and pulled a gun and shot him and ran, problem was I didn't kill him. I got away, but I had to find a place where no one could find you."
"I smuggled you back to the states, created a false identity for you as Mom's daughter, and left you with Mom. I knew you would be safe there, but I couldn't visit you, I couldn't risk it, I wanted you to stay safe. I made Mom promise that you would have the childhood I never had, a normal little girl, growing up doing normal things."
"The CIA didn't know that Mom existed, we had been separated so long that she wasn't part of my records. You don't have to worry about the jerk anymore, Chuck and your Uncle John helped me take care of him, I will tell you more about that later too. That is how we were reunited, I didn't want to explain to a little girl that her mom wasn't really her mom, and I was still in a dangerous business, so we left things alone. Make no mistake Molly, I love you no less than Stephen and Diane."
"To me Molly, you were my first child, Sarah smiles, you got me ready for those other two troublemakers. Molly I also believe that you opened my heart just a little, so that Chuck could get in. For so long, I had chosen to keep people out, to deny intimacy, the intimacy of love, of family, of trust, you sweet Molly were the first one to get in after a very long time, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude."
Stephen pauses the playback, Sarah's face full of love, frozen as if she were watching her kids, and the three meet in the middle of the room to hug and share their tears.
Diane is the first to speak, "Aunt Molly we know how much she loved you, and Dad too, they were always so proud of you."
Stephen takes Molly into a hug, "and just think Aunt Molly you gave Mom her heart back, we just gave her stretch marks."
The three of them laugh through their tears hugging each other tightly. Wiping tears from her eyes, "well I guess you can just call me Molly now."
Diane and Stephen shake their heads, and Diane offers, "that may take some time."
Stephen shrugs his shoulders, "doesn't matter what we call you, we love you more than ever."
After another round of hugging and many discarded tissues, Molly suggests they start the recording again, Stephen pushes the button and Sarah starts to talk.
"When I got back to DC, I filled Graham in on what happened, I told him that jerk had gone rogue, using me and the agency to enrich himself. Graham told me that an alert had been put out on him and he was sorry that happened to me. I told my boss I wouldn't work with handlers anymore; they can't be trusted; he said no problem. He slid a file across his desk at me, and said he thought I was ready to be a handler myself.
I picked up the file and opened it, there was a picture of a very goofy looking guy, his name was Charles Irving Bartowski, my real life was about to begin."
