Been sitting on this chapter for waaaay too long. One more and this leg of the series is done. Got another one-shot following then another short story, two chapters at least. IF I can get through those two, I'm planning something of an origin story for the sisters and although it's a bit late, a valentine's fic that I thought up like a year go.
Keys are as follows; /"Caller"/ "Foreign speak"

Ray was found out on the porch with his head hung low, leaning on his arms that rested across the wooden railing. Pointed ears twitched to the familiar thud of footsteps, their owner not daring to turn around and see who was approaching. Tala stood to Ray's left, keeping his bandaged arm out of sight. If he had to guess, the raven haired male was probably beating himself up about the situation with Jenna.
"How you holding up?"
The question sounded somewhat forced but not because Tala didn't want to ask. He was nervous of the response Ray might give in retaliation. They were still strangers to each other despite their old profession. A sigh was the first thing to pass Ray's lips, eyes hidden by his long black bangs. When Tala looked closer, he saw tanned hands trembling uncontrollably. Whether the shaking was due to nerves or fear, he couldn't say.
"Considering a beloved pet is gonna be put down after going for me, I'm doing swimmingly Tala."
Worn down blue eyes shone questioningly in the afternoon sun. Ray figured by the look he was getting that Tala wasn't aware that most times an animal was put down if they attacked a person, domesticated or not. One benefit of where the redhead grew up he supposed. Her master might not have been Jenna's intended target but she'd drawn blood regardless. Not to mention her fangs could've caught Xakyr instead.
"It's our fault, not yours." Tala retorted, shuffling his weight from one foot to the other. "We should've taken precautions after how Jenna reacted to you. There has to be a reason she lashed out. Cheveyo wasn't greeted with such hostility."
"If she's not gonna be put to sleep, what are you going to do about her biting you? Tala, if you hadn't reacted fast enough it could've been your child she sunk her teeth into. It's only a matter of time before that happens. I'm sure Jenna's a sweet pup and this is her first offense, and I don't want her to be put down but you gotta look at the bigger picture."
"Euthanasia is a last resort." Came Tala's clipped reply, blue orbs now lashed with ferocity. "I understand where you're coming from Ray, I really do. But I want to explore other options first before we make that call. If there really is no other choice, only then will it be on the table. I feel bad enough having to strike her just to get free."
The mask Tala had fought so hard to keep up finally shattered, his legs folding out from under him. Countless whimpered apologies were barely audible, accompanied by rivers of tears cascading down pale cheeks. Ray cautiously knelt beside his former rival and pulled him close, thinking it better to offer comfort rather than scorn right now. The last thing Tala needed was to feel worse than he already did about everything. Tired muscles tensed in Ray's hold instinctively, still somewhat on edge from earlier. A soothing circle being rubbed into his back eased Tala further into Ray's arms, returning the embrace as best he could.
They stayed like that for a while just listening to the sounds of nature, only coming back to reality when a concerned giant came hunting for them, a baggy blue jumper in hand. Tala didn't need telling it was for him which meant that Magpie probably didn't know yet what had gone on while she was upstairs out of sight. He couldn't keep her in the dark forever, but the less she had to fret about the better. The past 6 months had been stressful enough for both of them. Tending the needs of their litter was a more productive use of Magpie's energy.
Magpie could see something was bothering her future husband when he came into the kitchen for dinner an hour later. His skin looked paler than usual, eyes heavier with tiredness. Spencer dragging him off afterward without explanation only caused Magpie's concern to grow. Upon returning home, Tala settled for telling a little lie, that while playing with Jenna she got a bit rough. It wasn't unusual for them to wrestle in the yard so Magpie didn't think to question anything.
"So then." Tyson chimed, breaking the silence that hung around the living room like a heavy, ominous curtain. "How'd you guys meet?"
As expected, both Kai and Tala tensed. How was that any of Tyson's business? To hopefully ease the stoic papas out of their fortresses, Ray decided to go first, Rin napping away on his knee. If Spencer was being honest, he did wonder how Kai's old comrade ended up with Sakura and Magpie's half sister.
"Arranged marriage. I don't mean to sound rude, Tyson, but the reason is quite frankly none of anyone's business."
"Hey, we're cool dude. As long as you're happy man."
All eyes turned now to Kai and Tala who were both still very unwilling to say anything. Sakura felt it wouldn't hurt to give Tyson a little bit to chew on, facing the former champion calmly. He didn't need to be told everything so there was no need for Kai to be so defensive.
"I met Kai through Tala. We were in the same class but I can't for the life of me recall what we were studying. Then he met Magpie through me. Wasn't it on your birthday, Spencer?"
Questioned giant took a moment to think. Ian came to the rescue, Rüshi trying and failing for the sniper's attention. Mathilda pulled her daughter away before she bent Ian's fingers too far in one direction and hugged the girl tight.
"Sure was, Sakura. And what a day that turned out to be too. I think Tala must've popped one vodka too many, challenging Magpie to a battle on the condition that if he won, she'd go out with him. None of us could actually believe it when Tala lost."
Wolborg's master hid his face in shame at the reminder, Magpie rubbing his back soothingly. It was probably the proudest day of her life before the quintuplets were born. Max would've asked what happened next for Tala and Magpie to end up together anyway but he was silenced by a raised hand.
"I stayed in Moscow for a few days afterward. In all honesty, if Tala had just asked instead of setting himself up for a tail whooping, I would've said yes anyway. Thamur had some say in the matter, telling me I'd be a fool to pass up a strong man like him. The rest as they say is history. And for the record, Mariah didn't even get a taste of my full power. If I'd gone all out, she'd be in the hospital."
Everyone paled, even the normally fearless Blitzkrieg Boys. Just how strong was Magpie? Did Mr. Dickenson know her? If so, he most likely would've tried recruiting her. No doubt Tyson was itching to get Tala's future wife in the dish but she hadn't yet recovered from swinging Mariah around by the tail. Magpie saw the challenge in Tyson's blue eyes, warning him without words she would not pull her punches.
Distant barking prevented anybody from saying something to break the staring contest. Tala alighted from the couch to go see what was wrong; his hand inches from the back door when the babies could be heard crying and a yelp echoed from above, one he knew all too well. Fear gripped at Tala's heart as he sprinted upstairs, stopping still in the doorway to his and Magpie's room. Jenna was on the floor by the crib with blood on her neck, Balto tearing at something a few feet away.
"Oh god. Jenna!"
Tala crashed to the floor beside the beloved pup, feeling utterly helpless as she whined in pain. Kai appeared at the door, Ray close behind. First they saw Tala on his knees cradling Jenna, then the quintuplets sobbing, presumably in fear. Kai checked the crib, finding no signs that his nieces and nephews had come to harm. Ray's attention shifted to the red marks on Jenna's fur, the area around them looking swollen. Then he saw what Balto had been mauling and it all made sense. Tala was so out of it he didn't see or feel Jenna being taken from him.
Ray did everything he could to keep the injured dog calm as he climbed into the front passenger seat of Kai's car, a thin blanket wrapped around her trembling body. He couldn't begin to imagine how much pain she must be in. Kai sent a quick message to someone before setting a course for the nearest veterinary office. A call came through minutes later and since Kai had to focus on driving, it fell on Ray's shoulders to answer. Why would Ian be calling?
"Ian?"
/"Ray? I guess Kai's already driving. Listen, the snake that bit Jenna is an Adder. Where was she tagged?"/
"Neck it looks like. Will she be okay?"
/"Adders here in the UK aren't deadly but Jenna still needs treatment. My guess is it was looking for somewhere to hibernate or on the hunt for a mate and wandered into the house. I'm just glad none of the kids were bitten."/
"Yeah me too. We'll keep you posted Ian."
Ray put the phone down with a sigh, giving Jenna's ears a comforting stroke to let her know she was safe. Kai glanced away from the road at a red light, concern visible in his eyes.
"Well what bit her?"
"An Adder apparently. Ian said that while Jenna should pull through she still needs treatment. The kids are all fine thanks to Jenna and the other dog. You'll be okay, girl. We'll get you fixed up and home soon."
Jenna responded with a tiny bark, her curly tail thumping tiredly against Ray's leg. Maybe this human wasn't so bad after all?
"Speaking of fixing; I had words with Tala about what happened. For now, our hope is that spaying Jenna will ease her attitude towards you. And what you're doing now, comforting her when she needs it most, is certainly going to earn her respect."
Ray could only hope so. In a sense, getting bitten by a snake was punishment enough. Everything passed by like a blur once they reached the vets. Kai handled the money side of things and Ray gave Jenna the support she needed, staying by her whenever possible. Until she was cleansed of the Adder's venom, it was deemed unsafe to put her under anaesthetic to be de-sexed.
Back at Rainbow Hill Acres, it was a mission and a half getting the kids to calm down. The last thing Magpie expected to hear was that a snake had gotten in and bitten Jenna when she and Balto put themselves between it and the babies. Ian checked the whole house just in case, thankfully finding no more of the scaly critters. When asked how he knew so much about snakes in particular, Ian confessed to working with the misunderstood creatures at the Moscow zoo.
Tyson decided it was best to take his side back to the hotel in town. Tala saw them off at the door, feeling he owed his ex-rivals that much at least. Even if the wolf didn't show it, seeing familiar faces had been a refreshing change of pace. He just wished it was under better circumstances, aware that he must look like a wreck with his hair all a mess and eyes constantly framed by dark circles. A hand being set on his shoulder drew Tala away from his musings, seeing that old fire in Tyson's eyes.
"Don't be a stranger okay? We're all friends here, Tala. Sure we might live on opposite sides of the world to each other, but we're only a phone call away if you need help. You've a good woman in there who'll go to the ends of the world for you and five gorgeous little pups. Parenthood can be a scary thing, especially with your first. Here's my number. If you need ANYTHINNG, even if it's just to talk, I got your back."
Tala reluctantly took the slip of paper from Tyson's fingers, unsure what he'd done to deserve such support from someone he once tried tearing to shreds. Max and Kenny expressed that they too were there for the worn down father, passing their numbers to him as well. The rivals turned allies were soon gone, leaving Tala to stand on the porch a moment longer to let everything sink in.
Settling the little ones off to sleep that night was hell on Earth even with all hands on deck. Ray and Kai had come back from the vets without Jenna. She would be kept in overnight for observation and with any luck she'd be back to her old self by morning. Once the toddlers and quintuplets were all finally in dream land, it gave Ray time to think while Hope slumbered beside him, Driger resting in his palm. Now that he thought about it; both times Jenna went for him, the loyal tiger was in his pocket. But he'd fallen out when his master rocketed off in response to Tala's cry. All Ray could do was test this theory tomorrow when the husky came home.
Ray awoke the following morning before anyone's alarm could go off. It was about 7am and a quick glance to his left revealed that Hope wasn't beside him. His sleep addled brain slowly caught up with a familiar sensation down below, forcing a moan of ecstasy back down his throat before it could escape. And judging by loud grumbling up the hall, Ray wasn't the only one receiving a dirty wake-up call. Hope came out from under the sheets once the bullet chamber was empty, immediately pulled into trembling arms.
"Happy birthday, darling." She purred, nuzzling her forehead against Ray's chin.
Much as the birthday boy wanted to smother his affectionate wife in kisses, he'd wait until she washed her mouth out first. Leaving his and Hope's room half an hour later, Ray was immediately pounced on by Rin and Gou, struggling to hold the weight of two hyper toddlers first thing in the morning. He got to the kitchen alive only to be ambushed by a bear hug soon as he stepped through the door. Tala sat at the table with the evilest look on his face as he watched Magpie greeting Ray so warmly. Ray just looked down at her in surprise; not expecting his sister-in-law to be cuddly with him after two days of being under the same roof.
Looking around, Ray saw no sign of Cheveyo in the kitchen which felt odd. What surprised him more was Spencer manning the oven, Mathilda and Rüshi waiting patiently at the table for breakfast. Though if he thought about it, every team had a family dynamic to it, two members taking up a parental role. Ray himself was the mother figure of Tyson's team, Kai being the overly strict father. For the Blitzkrieg Boys it appeared Spencer was the mom and Tala somewhat fittingly playing dad. They had an extra role filled perfectly by Brian; a deranged uncle. This left poor Ian as the child. Speaking of Ian, where was he?
Ray couldn't say he liked the indigo haired man being absent from view. If Ian was anything like Daichi, pranks were not going to be far behind. Brian came trotting in whistling an unidentifiable tune, only pausing to kiss Magpie's cheek. The falcon master thought he was being sneaky when he gave her a clap on the backside and boy was he wrong. With astonishing speed, Tala seized Brian by the throat and slammed him onto the counter where Spencer was currently chopping something and he damn near cut Brian's ear off; roaring angrily while reaching for a frighteningly large paddle of wood. Ray instinctively ducked down to make himself less visible, wincing to the sight of two grown men receiving a royal throttling.
Mathilda it seemed was also not used to the family's antics, holding Rüshi close with fearful eyes. Spencer grumbled under his breath though few could understand the words uttered but if Ray had to guess, they had something to do with grown men behaving like naughty children. Judging by the look on an arriving Kai's face ten minutes later, the yelling had woken him up while he tried for a cheeky lie in. No chance of those in this house, not for anybody. Except one long nosed sniper apparently.
Cheveyo finally came into view once breakfast was served yet he appeared to have come from outside the house, hair all a mess. Magpie stared at him somewhat sleepily, a mug of fresh coffee forgotten in her hands. Ray tried to gauge what his sister-in-law was thinking, catching wind of a faintly floral scent. Was that perfume? Cheveyo noticeably paled when Magpie also latched onto it, her face darkening dangerously moments before a pale brown skinned woman appeared, long wavy black hair a frizzy mess. Tala was given no chance to move, his mate hunting after Cheveyo with a sharp knife.
"Cheveyo Ahote you get back here!"
"Maggie, you're overreacting! We can talk this out!"
"Talk what out?! You've been sleeping with my sister behind my back dickhead!"
Having a nice peaceful morning was too much to ask for in this house, Spencer sliding from his seat to go and rescue Cheveyo from a deranged employer without a word to the unnamed woman who had been revealed as family. But how was she related to Magpie exactly? They had no features in common at all even without the clear difference in skin colour, maroon eyes gazing nervously around the room. Ray seriously worried for his nieces and nephews having such a violently protective aunty/mother, not fancying his chances of survival should he ever end up on her bad side.
Spencer returning with a clean knife and Magpie over his shoulder spoke of Cheveyo hopefully escaping without harm. His secret lover deemed it unsafe for now to be in the house owner's presence, slinking off to the living room. She was likely in just as much trouble if not more than him. A full belly did not look to have quelled Magpie's temper as she washed up after breakfast, scrubbing at the dishes with never before seen savagery. Only Sakura was brave enough to hang back and help her sister clean up.
Cheveyo was found spread across a sofa, head in the mystery woman's lap as she tenderly stroked his hair all while telling him her sister would calm down eventually. Tala had to wonder how this future in-law had escaped his notice for the several year duration of his and Magpie's relationship. But then he realised she wasn't super talkative about her family to begin with. The only logical way for Magpie and this nameless woman to be related was via adoption but if that was the case, what happened to her biological parents?
Tension hung heavy in the air soon as Magpie stepped into the room, leering menacingly at her stable hand/babysitter. She was taken back out almost immediately by her dark skinned sibling, muffled talking heard soon after. Everyone was distracted from trying to focus on the words by a phone going off, Kai momentarily leaving his seat, mobile in hand. Judging by the tone, the vet office was calling with an update on Jenna, returning with a hopeful glint in his eyes.
"That was the vets. Jenna is stable enough to come home but I've been advised an eye should be kept on her for a day or so. Ray, off your tail. Now."
"I see having a kid didn't soften you any."
"Move it Kon, we don't have all day."
"Alright already. Chill out man. Rin, can you do daddy a favour?"
Addressed child gazed at her father somewhat fearfully, watching as he placed Driger into her tiny hands. The weight of his castle caught her somewhat off guard, almost dropping the proud tiger had she not inherited her papa's reflexes.
"I need you to look after Driger for a little while, okay? Can you do that for me Princess?"
"But why daddy?"
"I have a theory, sweetheart, and I'd like to test it out with your help. Now I'm going to go with Uncle Kai and collect Jenna from the animal hospital so be a good girl for your mom, aunties and Uncle Tala."
Rin wasn't given much more say in the matter, Ray striding out the front door with purposeful steps after Kai who was already waiting by his car. They hadn't even been gone half an hour when Tala vacated the room and came back dressed as if he was going out, addressing Spencer in their native tongue on his way outside and signalling for Hope to follow him.
The sisters returned to a room eerily empty of half the family, Sakura informing them that Kai had taken Ray to fetch Jenna but didn't know where Tala and Spencer ran off to with Hope and Rin. One could only assume it was for last minute gift shopping. Cheveyo didn't move an inch from where he laid until somebody knocked on the door. He'd anticipated coming face to face with Ceri and Anita but instead found Tyson and co all bundled up weighed down by bags.
Figuring it couldn't hurt to let them in, Cheveyo wearily stepped aside and softly shut the door once everyone was inside. Magpie certainly wasn't expecting to see what remained of the BBA Revolutions again so soon but their arrival made sense. It was Ray's birthday today after all and they probably hadn't celebrated it with him for almost ten years. There were too many bags though…they couldn't all be for her Chinese brother-in-law. Magpie had zero time to question them, reeled upstairs by the wails of her children. Sakura gave chase, Brian not too far behind since Cheveyo was still worn down from being nearly killed.
Ray's old team was curious about the new face, silenced from making any inquiries by the missing trio's return. So that they didn't crawl around and run amok the quintuplets were set into their bouncy chairs. Magpie's presumed adoptive sister was bouncing on the spot soon as she saw the pups, eager to get her hands on one of them for a cuddle.
"Oh my goodness they're so cute! How in the world did you carry them for 7 months?"
"With struggle, Talulah." Magpie grumbled. "Lots of it."
"Well they were certainly worth it. I'm guessing that strapping fellow looking like death is the father?"
Magpie only graced Talulah with a nod this time, more interested in getting a few extra winks of sleep. Mathilda wasn't sure what to say when Rüshi plodded over to give her aunty some gratefully received snuggles, musing that the little girl was turning into a cuddle bug just like her papa. Tyson's son wanted in on the action, trotting over as fast as his little legs would carry him once his parents gave the all clear. Gou completed the toddler pile around Magpie's lap, Rüshi between him and the unnamed heir of Tyson.
"They grow up so fast."
Remarked Hilary, heart swollen with love for the little boy she'd brought into the world. Sakura agreed, still unable to believe how quick Gou had gone from being a baby to a walking talking toddler. Time stopped for nobody and if they weren't careful, these innocent children would be adults in the blink of an eye. God help Magpie and Tala when the quintuplets turned 2 years old, especially with Saoirse already being a little terror.
"I already miss the days this little monkey was all cute and chubby." Max added, ruffling Charlotte's neat hair making the girl frown and he just laughed. "You love me really kiddo."
For the next ten or so minutes everyone talked quietly amongst themselves so not to disturb the napping quartet. Magpie needed all the sleep she could get before dinner time. Sakura grew increasingly concerned about Ian's absence the longer he was gone. Sure the youngest Blitzkrieg Boy loved to lie in but he was always up before noon. Brian wouldn't say what was keeping his brother, a watchful eye on Talulah as she kept the quintuplets occupied.
Magpie woke up on her own eventually, bladder screaming to be emptied. It killed her to move the children with them being all snug against her dress but she really needed to go, watched by masses of eyes as she settled Rüshi properly between the boys. Spencer's daughter was taken immediately into the tiny arms of her cousins, none of them stirring. Coming back from the bathroom she started feeling a bit peckish. Surely one cookie before dinner wouldn't hurt? Unfortunately her trip into the kitchen derailed before she got through the door.
"Hey Oba-chan, what's for dinner?"
Hilary would've smacked Daichi so hard he'd hit the moon but Brian shook his head. Best let the redheaded spitfire learn the hard way about riling the Omega. Magpie stood frozen half way in the door, shoulders hunched and head low. Daichi had certainly pushed one of the worst buttons. There weren't many things she hated being called besides Maggie-May, but Oba-chan was definitely up there.
"What'd you just call me, shrimp? I dare you to say it again."
And dare Daichi did, regardless of the murderous tone spoken towards him. He barely got the Japanese phrase for grandmother out a second time before Magpie surged forward. And Brian just let her at him, arms folded behind his head. Daichi was going to learn one way or another that she was not a woman to be trifled with.
"Yep, you two will get on just fine, Hilary."
Tyson laughed, legitimately enjoying Daichi's screams of terror. His comment earned him a playful slap on the arm but Hilary couldn't argue. She and Magpie apparently had more in common than she originally thought. Max and Kenny had the same reaction to Daichi's antics and Tyson's comment, both of them shaking their heads. Charlotte however looked to be concerned for her Uncle Daichi's safety. They were in a strange land after all.
Only when the red haired prankster shrieked about an axe did Brian get up. Now came the hard part…finding the poor bastard before Magpie removed something. She might not be fast enough to catch Daichi on foot, but he knew from experience that Tala's mate was wily as they came. Just ask the permanent lump on his head after the last time he made an inappropriate comment about her bodily proportions. As if reading the falcon master's mind, Daichi went sprinting by, Magpie trailing behind about 15ft, an axe for cutting wood swinging dangerously at her side.
At long last, Ian came into view. Daichi's screams likely drew him out of bed given he was still in his pyjama bottoms, dressing gown and no shirt, some kind of belt around his waist holding a spray bottle. By all accounts he looked deathly tired and really not in the mood to deal with an aggressive alpha female, yawning and scratching his head while trundling through the living room. Outside he found Brian trying to prevent Magpie from getting around him while her intended victim caught his breath slightly out of view.
When Ian gave him the signal, Brian snatched the axe from Magpie's hand and covered his face. The spray bottle's contents became known after two spritzes sent her into a sudden slumber, collapsing onto Ian's shoulder as he dashed forwards to catch her. Leaving him to take their sister inside, Brian dealt with Daichi. Rather than disturb the sleeping toddlers, Ian lugged Magpie up to her room and tucked her into bed. By the time he came back, Brian was half asleep on a sofa, dropping exhaustedly beside him. Falborg's master would've been fine with this had Ian's head not landed quite neatly in his lap close to the family jewels, a stain of red rising across his cheeks.
The falcon wielder looked most uncomfortable when shifting Ian's noggin away from his unmentionables, Sakura finding the interaction adorable. What melted her heart more was Ian snuggling deeper into Brian's trousers, a look of pure content over his face. Why he'd taken so long to get out of bed made perfect sense now…to Sakura anyway. Everyone else just thought it a cute display of brotherly love. Nobody had a lick of sympathy for Daichi as he plopped back into his seat beside Kenny.
"So shrimp, what have we learned about riling up Tala's wife-to-be?"
Brian enquired, a hint of sarcasm to his tone. An answer wasn't given simply because the opening of a door gave no time for it. First to return from their outing was Tala's group. Magpie's absence was noticed immediately, Brian assuring his redheaded brother that his future wife was resting in bed…after she'd almost decapitated Daichi. While Tala was concerned for her, his first point of call was the kitchen. Spencer was hot on his heels…once the giant was no longer laden with bags. He wasn't cold; more the proud father just wanted somewhere quiet to succumb to the pain in his arm.
The quartet hadn't been back long when Kai came stalking into the building rubbing his hands together in a desperate attempt to warm them up, a large bag hanging for the crook of his elbow. Ray brought up the rear, Jenna seemingly napping in his arms. Balto roused from his place behind the quintuplets when he smelled her nearby, ears pricked up and tail wagging. The blue heeler cross was known for being a quiet dog, surprising everyone with a welcoming howl for his wounded sister.
Tala came zooming out of the kitchen faster than Tyson could devour a hotdog, his pride long forgotten soon as Jenna's paws touched the floor. She approached him warily; afraid he might still be angry with her and the husky's body language showed it. Once Tala's arms curled around her she knew all had been forgiven, smothering him in lots of slobbery kisses to return the affection. You'd be forgiven for thinking the pup hadn't been bitten by a snake with how she crawled all over her pack leader, tail swinging a mile a minute.
It took a few minutes more for Magpie to become visible, her arrival well timed. Jenna stepped away from Tala and jumped eagerly into Ray's arms, intent on giving him kisses too. Nobody could believe how accepting she was all of a sudden. Before he could be questioned however, the overexcited pooch needed calming. All it took was hearing a bag rustle and she was sat down, her attention drawn to the sound's source. Ray didn't know how to feel about Tala asking him to close his eyes and hold out his right hand but did as his brother-in-law requested.
When Ray opened his eyes he half expected to be missing a limb, confused by the bright ring of red, green and white beads now circling his wrist. Upon closer inspection, Kai and Tala were sporting identical bands, the former looking none too pleased about his new piece of jewellery. Most people would see the bracelet as nothing other than a simple gift but Ray knew it held a deeper meaning. It symbolised respect and trust but also the bond of brotherhood be it by blood, friendship or in Ray's case, marrying into the family. Tala accepting somebody in such a way did not happen overnight and this small token of his unspoken feelings was proof that Ray had done the impossible and won him over in just a few short days.
"So…why is the dog not trying to tear your face off this time?"
"Well Kenny, it's really simple. This is going to sound absolutely bonkers but bear with me. Kai, if you'd be so kind as to do the honours."
If looks could kill, Ray would certainly be on the floor dead with how his former captain glared at him. But Kai did as he was asked…and put a muzzle on Jenna. He then kept a firm hold on her and the reason why quickly became clear. Ray gestured for Rin to go to him, his hand held out for her to take. She hadn't gotten half way across the room when Jenna started the thrash around.
"It's okay, sweetie." Ray soothed. "Just keep walking. She won't hurt you."
Jenna's wriggling grew more frantic the closer Rin got. Spencer had to take over restraining her because she was beginning to break free of Kai's hold. Ray's daughter pushed through her fear just long enough to reach him and the safety of his arms. Just what was he getting at by putting the little girl in harm's way? As Ray suspected, Rin still had Driger, the loyal tiger pulled out from a cute little bag that he didn't recognise.
"Here daddy. I lookded after Dwiger like you ask me to. Uncle Tal got me a bag to carry him in where he'd be safe."
"That's my girl. Now then, as I'm sure you all saw, it wasn't me Jenna had a bad reaction to. My theory is that she's in some way connected to Wolborg and that said bitbeast is not accustomed to felines of any kind. Without Driger in my pocket she's been all kisses and cuddles."
Ray was right about one thing; his theory sounded crazy but not entirely without merit. Could the same be true for Balto? Was he linked to Thamur and if so, why was he not making attempts at Ray's throat? And what remedy did he have in mind for Jenna's aggression?
An idea came to Magpie, one she acted on without much thought. Her departure was short lived, Wolborg and Thamur in hand when she returned. Ray parked his backside on the nearest sofa without being told, seemingly reading Magpie's mind. First he was given Thamur to hold, feeling the twin tailed wolf's energy flowing into his palm. Driger reacted slowly to this new bitbeast, at peace with his master being near it. Balto pressed his nose to Thamur's chip, proving Ray's suspicion about him being bonded with his fellow canine.
Problems arose however when Thamur was exchanged for Wolborg. Tala couldn't quite explain it, but there was this feeling of discomfort building in his chest as he watched his bey pulse rapidly. Ray seemed to be experiencing something similar, his hold on the white wolf weakening and Jenna wasn't much better. All Tala could think to do was place his hand over Wolborg and convey calming thoughts to her; telling her that she was okay and Driger meant none of them any harm. Petting Jenna seemed to help too.
Slowly but surely Ray and Tala were able to breathe normally again, their spirit companions now at ease with one another. This still left the question of why Wolborg and Jenna both took so poorly to Driger being close in the first place. And how had the white wolf imprinted herself onto the young husky? Tala couldn't recall a time he'd exposed his first pet to her icy counterpart. There was still much he didn't know about bitbeasts and the power they controlled.
Now that everyone was accounted for, Ray could finally receive the gifts everyone had bought for him. From his old team he got varying cook books and a group photograph of them all after their final tour. Thinking about it, that was the last time Ray had seen any of them in person. Of all the pictures taken of the team, this was his favourite for the simple fact Kai had been badgered into holding Charlotte for a few minutes and he did not look very amused, keeping Max's then baby sister as far away from his hair as possible. She had a habit of pulling it at every opportunity and he hated her for it. Being reminded of that day made Kai groan in presumed pain, his pride dented.
Getting presents from the other Blitzkrieg Boys wasn't something he expected…well it was just one from the three of them, Mathilda and Rüshi but it was the thought that counted. Spencer likely didn't trust his brothers to hunt for gifts and Ray wasn't sure he'd trust them either. Nonetheless he appreciated the sushi making kit. It saved him replacing his old one that had certainly seen better days. From Rin and Hope he received an ornamental teacup decorated with scenery and writing from home. If Ray knew his wife, she'd written the poetry herself.
Ray's favourite gift of the day came from Magpie and Tala that the latter had clearly bought last minute. He wasn't a huge fan of western made clothing because of how strange it felt against his skin but the outfit and fleece coat were incredibly comfy. Matched with plain brown cotton pants was a sky blue t-shirt emblazoned with the YinYang symbol circled by a tiger and swan. The jacket was a work of art; portraying tigers stalking through a snowy woodland. For the BBA Revolutions there was no stranger sight than Ray donning something other than his traditional garb but damn did he wear it well.
Stealing a glance of the nearby wall mounted clock, Magpie saw it was just after midday. Telling everyone to get their coats on as she meandered to the kitchen caused much confusion. Were they going somewhere? Brian chose to disobey the order, sneaking after Magpie to see what she was doing. He found her reaching into a cookie jar, taking the opportunity to open a cupboard. Little that Brian knew, Magpie was perfectly aware of his presence in the room evidenced by the rolling pin tossed at him. He barely had time to dodge the wooden shaft, arms curled around his head to protect it.
"Brian get out of my cupboards!"
"But I'm hungry!"
"I don't care! Get your claws off the jam jars and get out of my kitchen before I remove something!"
"Meanie!"
An invisible thread lured Spencer into the room, a look of irritance spread across his face. He dragged Brian out of the kitchen by the collar of his shirt and kicked him back into the living room, sending the falcon master on a head first collision course with a coffee table. The sound of bone meeting wood pulled Ian out of his slumber, unsurprised to see Brian on the floor with his backside in the air. Huffing in frustration, he grabbed Brian's ankles and pulled him down in such a way he landed hip first.
"Seriously Brian? First thing in the morning and you're already getting your ass kicked?"
Spencer would've told Ian that he'd been asleep half the day but Tyson beat him to it. He might not have understood a word his fellow bluenette said but the former world champion could make an uneducated guess.
"It's just gone midday dude. You've been out of it all morning."
Still half asleep, Ian's reply came in his native tongue as he rubbed the back of his aching neck after feeling it give a sharp and audible crack.
"Afternoon already? That would explain why I'm so hungry and achy."
So tired was he that Ian didn't see Magpie walking out of the kitchen with a cookie in hand. She wasn't paying attention either, bumping into the long nosed sniper with a surprised squeak. Giving her red eyed brother a pat on the back she sent him off to get dressed. Now came the hard part…getting the pups into their outdoor onesies. Once they had Tala and Magpie's blessing, Hilary and Mathilda lent a hand beside Hope and Sakura. Fortune smiled upon them, all five infants dressed for the cold in a matter of minutes right on time for their Uncle Ian to come back fully clothed and neatly groomed, swiping Saoirse away from Hilary on his way to the door.
Part of Magpie's plan became clear as everyone gathered on the porch; a row of several horse pulled carriages lined up nearby. Where they were going was still a mystery to everyone but the mastermind. Once everybody was split into groups and loaded into a carriage, their journey began. Ray sat with Rin in his lap watching the world outside go by, curious as to what his sister-in-law had planned.
Some time later, the convoy pulled up outside the entrance to Tintagel Castle. Getting inside took little time, the entrance fee apparently paid in advance. A seasoned tour guide led the group around Tintagel's historical castle, reciting to them the structure's history. It took much nagging from Tyson, but a group photograph was taken at the end. En route to their next destination, Magpie hid her nerves in regards to how this upcoming birthday surprise would go.
One by one the carriages drew to a halt outside a grand looking building. Disembarking and marching into a large performance hall took only a matter of minutes, the stage shrouded by a large red curtain. Lights shutting off plunged the audience into darkness indicating that a show was about to begin. Slowly the heavy drape drew open, revealing that which it hid. Ray's keen eyes quickly identified Ceri and Anita at the head of a dance troupe; caught up in a trance watching them all dance to a song he knew well.
Graceful movements had everybody glued to their seats, awed by the spectacle put on by Anita and her crew. Upon its end, she, Ceri and a few others moved behind familiar instruments, or at least they were to Ray and Hope. The tune that followed had a feel of cheerful merriment to it that took Ray back to his childhood, a time when tea leaves were harvested hence the song's name; Harvest of Tea. A ten minute break followed, giving everyone chance to stretch their legs or use the restrooms if required.
Several songs later, nobody seemed to hear double doors opening. Mr. Dickenson strode into the room and waddled down the aisle mostly unnoticed, discovered by Spencer who felt a presence behind him. Why in the world had the BBA chairman showed up? Sure the man adored the team he'd put together all those years ago but his arrival felt more like a business call than a personal visit to wish Ray a happy birthday. What other reason could he have to be trussed up in his usual suit?
After another hour, the show ended. Magpie managed to get only a few inches away from her seat before she was pulled into the mother of all bear hugs. Every fear she'd had melted away inside the cage that was Ray's arms, returning the embrace somewhat sheepishly. A sudden call from Tyson ruined the moment.
"Mr.D what're you doing here?!"
Magpie got the feeling she knew why given how said chairman looked at her. For now Stanley remained pleasant so not to tarnish the atmosphere further, patting Tyson's son affectionately on the head as the boy had run over to him excitedly. Gou and Rin were far less eager, glued to the heels of their respective mother.
"Business mostly, Tyson. Figured I'd pay you all a visit while I was in the area. I see little Makoto is still bursting with energy. Ray m'boy it's good to see you. How long has it been?"
"Too long Mr. Dickenson." Ray laughed, Hope under his arm. "Not sure if the media picked up on it, but I'm a married man now. These beautiful girls are my wife Hope and our daughter, Rin."
Mr. Dickenson stepped forward to get a better look at mother and child, a warm smile stretched across his face. "Your village is very good at repelling vultures, a little too good sometimes. It's a pleasure to meet you both; I'm Stanley Dickenson, chairman of the BBA and founder of the BladeBreakers."
"The pleasure is all mine, Mr. Dickenson."
Hope retorted, taking the hand held out to her in a firm grip. Rin bolted off when Mr. Dickenson's eyes trained themselves on her, hiding behind Tala's legs to everyone's surprise. Ray couldn't help but be concerned; his daughter had never been this nervous of people and that included strangers. Looking around at everybody again, Stanley noticed the quintuplets spread around with their aunties and uncles.
"I must admit I'm surprised by all these little ones. But it's good to see they're happy and healthy."
It was only a matter of time before Mr. Dickenson got to the reason he was in Tintagel. While there was a BBA branch in town it seldom had the honour to welcome the company's respected chairman. Last time Magpie met with him was about seven years ago during her final tourney. And his sudden arrival couldn't be good news. A shiver raced down her spine when she became Mr. Dickenson's next target.
"You're looking well, Magpie."
"Cut the pleasantries old man, what are you doing here? "
Mr. Dickenson sighed. He'd really hoped to do this politely. "I received a rather angry call the other day from the White Tigers. They reported coming across a violent beyblader matching your description, that this individual attacked Mariah without provocation and nearly put her in hospital."
"Oh please." Magpie scoffed. "Unprovoked? Perhaps if Mariah didn't want a thrashing she shouldn't have harassed my little sister. Did she tell you how her team tried to gang up on me? Or that they were effectively trespassing on MY property? And for the record, I held back. If I really wanted Mariah in the hospital, she'd be there right now and you know it. Almost everyone in this room saw what happened and they can attest that when Ray ordered for the battle to stop, it stopped."
"Trespassing you say?"
"Yes. In case you've forgotten, I run a safe haven for the homeless and neglected animals. Unless you're family or a close friend, permission is required to be on the premises. I received a call from the BladeBreakers the evening prior letting me know they were coming so gave them the all clear. The White Tigers however did not arrange a visit so I dealt with them as I saw fit."
Now HOPEFULLY all those pesky little errors I found briskly reading through the chapter are gone. Can't make any promises, but I will try my best to have chapter 3 done soon. Without spoiling anything, there's some drama coming up so look forward to it.
